There is an old proverb that says, “Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man how to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” Tommy Moss of Brandon has been fishing ever since he can remember. “I have a photograph of me when I was nine years old and my little brother was five years old, holding a stringer of fish in Destin, Florida.” Tommy grew up in south Jackson and graduated from Wingfield High School. He recalls the years he worked at a Tote-Sum store in Jackson. “The man who owned it took me out fishing when I was a teenager. We went to the Ross Barnett Reservoir not long after it was built.” In the 1970s, Tommy says he fished in a few bass tournaments before the late Jim McKay from Brandon got him into crappie fishing. “That was 25 years ago. I have fished in a lot of crappie tournaments since then.” Tommy started fishing with Brad Calhoun, who serves as a Rankin County supervisor. “We started tournament fishing together. Brad and I fished the American Crappie Trail, which covers five or six states in the southeast. We have done different tours over the years, and had a couple of sponsors; Lucas Oil, who did our boat wrap, and B’n’M Poles. They are in West Point, Mississippi, and they are the leader in the crappie pole industry.” The sport of fishing is ever-changing, and Tommy has seen many of those changes during his lifetime. “It’s especially true with bass and crappie fishing. Electronics play heavily into that. To so many of the young fishermen out there, it’s like playing a video game.” Tommy says he is a little concerned that because the electronics available now are so good that it may contribute to a dwindling fish population around the state. “Mississippi has four of the top five crappie lakes in the United States: Grenada Lake, Enid, Sardis, and the Ross Barnett Reservoir. Arkabutla is also excellent for crappie fishing.” The thrill of the weigh-in is still what excites Tommy, who says that winners are decided by 1/100th of an ounce. “That is, in itself, super exciting!” Tournament fishing can get expensive. “It has evolved to folks fishing out of $25,000 to $35,000 boats, plus the electronics, gas, and travel costs to MISSISSIPPI Woods&Water 41
