a memorable game against TCU in the 

National Championship game in which 

he had a pass break-up, tackle for loss 

and four quarterback hurries. He is a

With an awesome complete game in the books, can Kirby and company 

do it again versus the ’Dores at 11 a.m. in Dawg City, USA – Nashville? 

My oh my that sure was a whole lot of fun this past 

weekend in the Classic City as Kirby’s Dawgs put 

all of college football on notice ... Georgia 51 

Kentucky 13. 

Going into Saturday’s game, I told folks that it was time for 

the “work in progress” 2023 team to either come out fast and 

furious or perhaps, if they didn’t, then maybe struggling early 

was unfortunately part of their DNA (this season). We know how 

things unfolded as former Bulldog great, Thomas Davis called the 

Dawgs and those men in Red and Black completely delivered in 

all phases. 

Of course, the Bulldog Nation did their part too as Sanford 

Stadium was 

completely bonkers 

the entire night. 

The lopsided win 

was somewhat 

surreal much 

like the National 

Championship 

game in LA this past 

January. Outside 

of an ill-advised 

interception thrown 

by Carson Beck, the 

Dawgs could do 

no wrong against 

an overmatched 

Kentucky team that 

dropped their 14th 

consecutive contest 

to Georgia. 

And just to clarify 

any misconception 

(about being critical) from above, Carson Beck continues to 

amaze with his exceptional play. In fact, he earned Kevin Butler’s 

Offensive Player of the Game on page 37. As KB points out, “as 

the games get bigger, Carson Beck gets better.” Keep up the solid 

play No. 15. 

Our sports guys, Clay Watkins (page 20) and Greg Poole (page 

36) are also full of much deserved praise for the team in both 

their columns. Enjoy all their positive musings, but don’t worry 

our man Jeff Dantzler brings everyone in the Bulldog Nation 

back to the ground with his column on page 10. Much like Coach 

Dooley and Larry Munson were famous for, you can always count 

on JD to remind all of us of the scar tissue of the past, even from 

the Vanderbilt Commodores. And like 94% of time, JD is correct 

as you can certainly bet that the ’Dores will give the Dawgs their 

very best shot at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday. 

However, our team will certainly have the support of their 

incredible fan base, which is why I dubbed this cover Dawg City 

USA – Nashville. From Broadway to Music Row to the West End, I 

can’t wait to see all the red and black that takes over Music City. 

Without question, the Vandy roadie is always a rip-roaring, good 

time, so my advice is to get some exercise this week and save 

your money because Nashville is sure to challenge both your 

stamina and wallet. 

To our Bulldog team, congrats on putting together such a 

complete game 

versus Kentucky. 

Now, the challenge 

is can you give

consecutive weeks?

Much like in 2017, Kirby’s High-Flying Canines must stay 

focused for the early kick (11 a.m. CT) in Music City, USA 

It was the morning of October 7, 

2017 and nerves were running 

high at my old bachelor pad on 

Bloomfield Drive. 

In the second season of the Kirby 

Smart era, the Bulldogs were in launch 

mode. Georgia was coming off a 41-0 

shallacking of Tennessee in Knoxville 

a week after blowing away previously 

unbeaten Mississippi State in Athens. 

The second week of the season marked 

a groundbreaking win for Kirby’s 

Canines as Georgia went to South Bend 

and edged Notre Dame in a 20-19 

thriller. Throw in a couple of wins over 

Appalachian State and Samford, the 

Dogs were 5-0, 2-0 in the Southeastern 

Conference and trending up, ranked fifth 

nationally and ahead of schedule in the 

eyes of many. 

So here we were, playing the early 

game in Nashville. And I mean early. 

Music City, USA is in the Central Time 

Zone, so the noon kickoff meant 11 a.m. 

in Nashville time. 

This was a movie I’d seen too often 

before - the Dogs riding high, and all of 

a sudden, it’s Cardiac City in Music City. 

All-American Terry Hoage, with Georgia 

undefeated, saved the Dogs with some 

help in the booth from the incomparable 

Larry Munson, as Georgia edged the 

Commodores in 1983. I’ll never forget 

being in absolute shock two years later 

when Georgia, which had gotten hot 

after a season-opening heart-breaking 

loss to Alabama, winning four straight, 

got tied by Vanderbilt 13-13. The 

Commodores missed a 36-yard field goal 

at the buzzer to win it. 

My freshman year at Georgia in 1994, 

with my travel companion friends Jay 

Deal and Ty Wheeler in tow, the oncebeaten 

Bulldogs jumped out in front 

of Vanderbilt 14-0. But lost 27-25, with 

a couple of funny bounces and two 

chances at a game-winning field goal 

going awry with the clock winding 

down. 

We’re just talking about games in 

Nashville, so I’ll pass over 1994 when 

a pair of Georgia natives in the Vandy 

backfield torched the Dogs to the tune 

of over 400 yards rushing in a 43-30 

Commodore win on Homecoming in 

Athens. The next year, Georgia beat 

Vandy 17-6 in Nashville to improve to 

4-3 and the Bulldogs head coach was 

doused with a victory Gatorade shower. 

Georgia had lost once in 1999 but 

fell behind the Commodores 17-3. A 

perplexing fake punt call helped the 

Bulldogs to victory. 

In 2003, with Georgia coming off a 37- 

23 win over Alabama and 41-14 topping 

of Tennessee in Knoxville, I made the 

trip to Nashville with my friend Glenn 

Rosdeutscher. Vanderbilt led 2-0 at the 

half. Tensions were high. Georgia rallied 

and won, but nervy to say the least. 

Georgia’s season was slip-sliding 

away, but two fumbles bounced for the 

Bulldogs in 2007 and Brandon Coutu hit 

the game-winning field goal. Georgia 

wins, doesn’t lose again, and finishes No. 

2 nationally. 

The Bulldogs of 2013, crushed by 

injuries, had wins over South Carolina, 

LSU and Tennessee, but had lost to 

Clemson and Missouri. Well, Georgia 

lost to Vanderbilt in Nashville, blowing a 

27-14 second half lead. Kevin Butler and 

I made that trip. It was a hard car ride 

home for KB. 

Again, just talking about games in 

Nashville, so Vandy’s comeback upset 

of Georgia in Athens in Kirby’s first year, 

we’ll skip that from the list. 

So flash forward, or back to 2017. Here 

was Georgia, looking undoubtedly like 

a College Football Playoff contender, 

led by the dynamic senior backfield duo 

of Nick Chubb and Sony Michel, and 

starting true freshman Jake Fromm at 

quarterback. 

For whatever reason, the score 23-18 

was stuck in my head. I just kept reliving 

those brutal losses, that tie and all the 

close shaves in Nashville. No matter who 

the coach was. And I just kept thinking, 

maybe we can pull it out something like 

23-18 and stay undefeated. And not lose 

for a second straight time to Vanderbilt, 

feeling as though my lifetime quota of 

losses to the ‘Dores has been quite filled. 

It was 21-0 midway in the second 

quarter and 21-7 at the half. Georgia 

built a 45-7 lead in the second half and 

won 45-14. Chubb, Michel, D’Andre 

Swift, Terry Godwin and Elijah Holyfield 

all scored touchdowns. The Dogs ran for 

423 yards, averaging 7.8 per pop, with 

Michel going for 151 and Chubb 140. 

A new era had indeed dawned. The 

Dogs were ready. And lethal. 

As enormous as the victories over Notre 

Dame, Mississippi State and Tennessee 

were, the preparedness and execution 

by Georgia in Nashville reinforced the 

confidence in the powerhouse Kirby 

Smart was building even moreso. 

You know the rest of the story. That 

Georgia team won the SEC title, beat 

Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl and came 

agonizingly close to capturing the 

big prize. It was the first of a six year 

run (and counting) with the Bulldogs 

in the final top ten and a major bowl 

game, highlighted by the 2021 and 

2022 national championships. Dating 

back to 2017, the Bulldogs have beaten 

Vanderbilt 45-14, 41-13, 30-6, 62-0 and 

55-0. There was no game in 2020, as 

Vanderbilt twice didn’t come to Athens 

during the Covid year. 

Now Georgia has another early 

wakeup call. Of Smart’s numerous 

accomplishments, one that is hard to 

quantify but easy to see, is having his 

team ready week after week. Even for 

the early road games. Business trip. 

So it’s another Nashville test. Last 

year, the Commodores beat Kentucky 

and Florida. Now they try to slay the 

kingpins. As the Top Dawg says, humility 

is just a week away.

Top-ranked Georgia and Vanderbilt square off Saturday 

in a Southeastern Conference battle in Nashville with the 

Bulldogs a perfect 6-0 on the season, 3-0 in the SEC and the 

Commodores at 2-5 and 0-3 in league play. 

Kirby Smart’s two-time reigning national champions played 

their best game of the season this past week in Athens, 

topping Kentucky 51-13 in a battle of unbeatens on Dooley 

Field in Sanford Stadium. Vanderbilt is coming off a 38-14 

loss to Florida in Gainesville, marking the Commodores fifth 

straight loss this season. 

With limited seating due to stadium construction at 

Vanderbilt, and the allure of the Nashville nightlife for an 

extraordinarily happy Georgia fanbase, this is a hot ticket.. 

Georgia has won five straight games in the series since the 

Commodores pulled off a 17-16 upset over the Bulldogs 

in Athens in Smart’s first season at the Bulldogs helm in 

2016. Georgia won 45-14 in Nashville in 2017, clubbed the 

Commodores 41-13 the following year and beat Vandy 30-6 

in 2019. Vanderbilt twice backed out of games in Athens in 

the Covid season of 2020. The past two years, en route to 

successive national championships, the Dogs have won big. 

Georgia won in Nashville 62-0 in 2021 and 55-0 a year ago in 

Athens. 

Clark Lea is in his third year as Vanderbilt’s head coach. 

He came from Notre Dame where he was the defensive 

coordinator for Brian Kelly. Last season’s Commodores team 

took a big step forward for the program with second half of 

the season upset wins of Kentucky and Florida, both of which 

have wins over Vandy this year. 

In the Bulldogs win over Kentucky last Saturday, redshirt 

junior quarterback Carson Beck completed his first 12 pass 

attempts, and wound up connecting on 28 of 35 aerials for 

389 yards and four touchdowns with an interception. All- 

American tight end Brock Bowers had seven receptions for 

132 yards with a touchdown, a third straight game with 100- 

plus yards receiving. The victory over Kentucky was the 14th 

straight for the Bulldogs in the series with the Wildcats. 

That 14th straight win over Kentucky extended some 

incredibly impressive, historically significant streaks for the 

Bulldogs. 

Georgia has been victorious 39 times in the last 40 games, 

and the Bulldogs are riding a school record 23 game winning 

streak. Smart’s Dogs have 33 straight regular season wins, 

and 22 consecutive regular season SEC wins. Georgia has 

been victorious in 23 straight contests at on Dooley Field 

in Sanford Stadium, which was electric in the win over the 

Wildcats. 

The feel will be different with the early kickoff in Nashville. 

Perhaps there will again be more red in the stands at Vandy 

than gold. On the last two visits in particular for the Bulldogs, 

there has been a heavy partisan Georgia crowd at Vanderbilt 

Stadium. 


BULLDOGS TO WATCH

MIKE BOBO (OC) - If you liked what you saw against Kentucky, you’re going 

to love what you’ll see against Vandy. Yes, every game is different, but last week 

looked like a turning point for this Georgia offense. A switch has been flipped, 

and now it feels like Mike Bobo and Carson Beck are really getting a handle on 

things in both of their first years. Statistically, the Vanderbilt defense isn’t the 

best, and neither is their offense. So, there shouldn’t be much keeping Bobo 

from putting up another impressive game in the stat column. 

OSCAR DELP (TE #4) - Being a second string to Brock Bowers makes seeing 

the field difficult, but scoring a touchdown in meaningful time (2nd quarter) 

against a ranked SEC opponent definitely can’t hurt your chances. Sophomore 

Oscar Delp has been a name to keep up with since before even committing to 

Georgia and should remain a player to keep an eye out for as Georgia heads 

to Nashville to take on the academically elite Vanderbilt Commodores. Dawgs

should have their way which means Delp should have a day. 

CASH JONES (RB #32) - Now that there’s some depth returning to the 

running back room—i.e., Kendall Milton being back—Cash Jones should have 

the opportunity to see more gimmicky pass-catching opportunities that Dillon 

Bell was getting prior to Milton’s return. And although Coach Smart preaches 

that you can’t underestimate going on the road against an SEC opponent, 

looking historically, Jones should be able to see the field sooner rather than 

later; Georgia has won by an average of 40 points over the last five meetups 

between these two teams. 

DOMINIC LOVETT (WR #6) - Vanderbilt has allowed the third most 

passing yards in the SEC through seven games this season. This should be a 

prime opportunity for Carson Beck and, in turn, Dominic Lovett to have a good 

day through the air. In just his first year with the team, Lovett is already the 

Dawgs’ fourth most productive receiver, with 22 receptions for 210 yards, but he 

has yet to find the end zone. Maybe he’ll finally cash in against the Commodores. 

CJ ALLEN (LB #33) - A true freshman getting meaningful playing time

at inside linebacker for the University of Georgia under Glenn Schumann is 

definitely something worth mentioning. Add to that the fact that he’s one 

of the Dawgs’ top-10 tacklers, and you’ve got yourself a player in CJ Allen.

Georgia’s 2008 Southeastern Conference 

championship baseball team clinched the league 

title (in Week 9 of 10) by taking two of three 

against Vanderbilt at Hawkins Field in Nashville. 

In the highest scoring game ever between Georgia 

& Vandy, the Dogs of 1984 prevailed 62-35 

with quarterback David Dukes & fullback Andre 

“Pulpwood” Smith shining in the victory. 

All-American guard Kelly Miller delivered one of her 

most memorable moments, hitting a three at the 

buzzer to win the 2001 SEC Tournament final over 

Vandy at the Pyramid in Memphis. 


Being in the bottom five of SEC offenses (in terms of yards), 

Vanderbilt should be one of Georgia’s more predictable 

games this season. If that’s the case, Allen should get plenty of 

opportunities to show what he’s got. 

JULIAN HUMPHREY (DB #12) - Although the ‘Dores 

rank around the middle of the SEC in terms of passing yards 

per game, they’re actually second to last in the conference 

when it comes to completion percentage, only managing 

to complete 55.8% of their throws. With Julian Humphrey 

constantly competing against Daylen Everette for that CB2 

spot, Vanderbilt’s lack of ability in passing may give Humphrey 

a nice, low-pressure situation to succeed. 

DAN JACKSON (S #17) - In terms of points allowed, 

the Vanderbilt Commodores have the best defense in the 

conference, averaging about 34 points allowed per game. This 

means there’s a Vandy offense on the other side of the ball that 

will be fighting to keep up and make up for it. Vandy’s going

to have to throw the ball a lot to stay in this game. That should 

mean the Georgia defense will respond with plenty of dime

COMMODORES TO WATCH

CLARK LEA (HC) - Lea is midway through his third season back at 

his alma mater, having been hired to coach the Commodores in 2020. 

Turning Vanderbilt’s program is almost an impossible task, but Lea was 

adamant he was the right man for the job. Lea and the Dores started 2-0, 

but are now on a streak of five straight losses. If Lea wants to extend his 

stay in Nashville, he needs a program-defying victory against the No. 1 

ranked Bulldogs. 

AJ SWANN (QB #5) - Swann is a Georgia native and despite 

Vanderbilt’s massive struggles, he has played good football having 

thrown for nearly 1,300 yards and 11 touchdowns. The turnover bug has 

proven to be a problem, however, having thrown seven interceptions 

in seven total games through 2023. Swann is a big quarterback with a 

strong arm. If given time in the pocket, he is capable of causing problems

for the Bulldog defense through the air. 

PATRICK SMITH (RB #4) - The junior from Egg Harbor Township, 

New Jersey is the Commodores leading rusher with 246 yards and 

two touchdowns on 59 carries. Smith is a smaller back standing at just 

5’9” and weighing 189 pounds, but he is explosive and has big play 

capabilities. Smith needs to spark the Vandy rushing attack early to allow 

Vanderbilt to open up their offense against a dominant Georgia defense. 

WILL SHEPPARD (WR #14) - Sheppard is one of the better receivers 

in all of the SEC, but with little notoriety due to the team he plays for. The 

Louisiana product is midway through his senior season, and is a leader 

on this Vanderbilt football team, having forgone the NFL draft after an 

impressive junior campaign to return to Nashville for one final season. 

Sheppard is Vandy’s leading receiver with 35 catches for 550 yards and 

a remarkable eight touchdowns. The senior is by far AJ Swann’s favorite 

target and Georgia will need to be aware of the dangerous receiver this 

Saturday.

CJ TAYLOR (LB #1) - Taylor has been all over the field for the 

Commodores defense in 2023 having recorded far and away the most

In Georgia’s 20-13 victory over Vanderbilt in

Hall of Famer Dan McGugin was Vanderbilt’s 

football coach from 1904 - 1934, leading the 

Commodores to great success, highlighted by 15 

seasons with a zero or a one in loss column.

three and has an interception to his name while also forcing two 

fumbles. Winning the turnover battle is one way Vanderbilt stays in 

this football game, and Taylor’s ability to cause takeaways should be 

something the Bulldogs need to be aware of. 

DE’RICKEY WHITE (S #2) - White is a physically imposing 

safety that stands out 6’4” and weighs nearly 220 pounds. The senior 

from Gadsden, Alabama is tied for third on the team in total tackles 

with 29 and is first on the team in interceptions with two. White’s 

ball hawking skills and ability to stop the run make him an impact 

player against the Bulldogs this Saturday, and the safety will need to 

have a career day to limit the Bulldogs offense. 

NATE CLIFTON (DE #15) - Clifton is the Commodores biggest 

threat off the edge. So far through 2023, the senior is second on the 

team in sacks with 2.5. After Carson Beck showcased his ability to 

dissect defenses when given time in the pocket, it is imperative that 

Clifton finds a way to get the Bulldog quarterback on the ground.

TERRY HOAGE CAME UP BIG 

VERSUS THE ‘DORES IN 1982, 83

1. Vandy QBs - Georgia will have to prepare for two talented Vanderbilt 

quarterbacks. Both Ken Seals and AJ Swann have delivered in some big spots in 

their Commodore careers. Making that signal caller uncomfortable is a must for 

the Bulldogs - what a hot take that is! Can Georgia’s defensive front dominate 

the line of scrimmage? The last two years, the Bulldogs routed the Commodores, 

rolling to a 62-0 victory in Nashville in 2021 and a 55-0 blowout of Vandy in 2022. 

A big key, complete domination by Georgia’s defensive line. A lot of those guys - 

four first round defensive linemen - are playing in the NFL. It starts in the trenches 

and the Bulldogs ‘big uglies’ will be challenged to control Vanderbilt’s O-Line. 

2. Big SEC 2022 Wins - Vanderbilt picked up a couple of signature wins last 

season in Clark Lea’s second year at the helm in Nashville. Vanderbilt had lost five 

in a row, including the aforementioned 55-0 loss to Georgia and a 55-3 blasting 

by Alabama. But the Commodores kept fighting and on November 12th pulled 

off a 24-21 upset victory at Kentucky. The next week in Nashville, with an 11 a.m. 

Central kickoff (sound familiar), the Commodores jumped on a sleepy Florida 

team and beat the Gators 31-24. Beating two SEC East foes was a big step forward 

and a point of pride for the Commodores, who will have the two-time reigning 

national champions in their crosshairs Saturday. 

3. Terry Hoage - In 1982 and 1983, Georgia’s magnificent All-American 

rover Terry Hoage had two of his greatest games against Vanderbilt. The 1982 

Commodores, who posted an 8-3 regular season, were led by All-SEC Quarterback 

Whit Taylor. Hoage hauled in three interceptions, keying a second half rally in a 

27-13 Bulldog victory that improved Georgia to 6-0 on the campaign en route to 

a perfect 11-0 regular season and third straight SEC championship. Larry Munson 

said “All day long, Hoage, Hoage, Hoage.” The following year in Nashville, Vandy 

had another outstanding quarterback, Kurt Page. Listening to the master in our 

living room in Statesboro, the Bulldog Network somehow got knocked off the air, 

right as Bulldog tailback Keith Montgomery was off to the races. I immediately 

began scanning the dial and somehow landed on the Vanderbilt broadcast, 

guessing it was WLAC 1510 out of Nashville, to find out Montgomery had scored. 

I think it was a 30-yard scoring scamper. No more than a minute of two later, the 

Bulldog Network and one of my favorite heroes, The Mighty Munson was back. 

Georgia was 5-0-1, ranked in the top ten and trying to hang on. Vandy had a 

receiver break open in the back of the end zone, but it was Hoage to the rescue, 

narrowly tipping away what looked like a “cinch touchdown.’ It was an epic call 

that had us all nervous and hopeful. “Somebody got up in the air with a great leap 

…. Terry Hoooooaaage, Hoage got up in the air …” On the next play, Gary Moss 

came up with an interception and the Dogs escaped. 

4. Tough Road Ticket - Georgia has always traveled well to Nashville to 

watch the Bulldogs play Vanderbilt. On the last two trips, it’s been next level, with 

an estimated 75-80 percent of the crowd (minimum) in red for Georgia 2019 and 

2021 victories at Vandy. With construction projects going on around the stadium 

and fewer seats available, this ticket has been a hot one on the secondary market. 

The way the schedule has set up here of late in odd numbered years - of course all 

that will be changing soon - Georgia has had an advantage playing at Vandy and 

what is now Hyundai Field in Atlanta, having more fans in a road game than the 

home team. By a lot. 

5. Music City - Nashville is a great city, Music City USA, the home of country 

music and great night life. Any night of the year, you can make your way down 

Broadway, duck into Legends, The Stage, The Stand, Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge and 

so many more Honkey Tonks and hear tremendous music from that next aspiring 

star. The same can be said for some of the lounges at Nashville’s better hotels. 

Hopefully the Red and Black will be out in full force and celebrating - likely with a 

few bachelorette parties - another Georgia victory at Vandy.

While the learning curve for these 2023 

Dawgs will continue, they certainly 

showed out whipping the Wildcats 

Georgia’s 2023 season 

has been filled with 

dissatisfaction which has 

been highlighted heavily 

by many media outlets and fans 

understanding that this team has 

not shown its full potential. Against 

Kentucky, the Georgia team we all 

know and love put on full display 

why they are the No. 1 team in the 

country and odds-on national title 

favorites. The play calling was terrific, 

Carson Beck was dialed in and looked 

extremely comfortable in his decision 

making, and the offensive line gave 

the Georgia gunslinger plenty of time 

in the pocket. 

The Georgia players and coaching 

staff have fielded questions all 

season regarding the Bulldogs slow 

starts. Georgia had been abysmal in 

the first quarter prior to the victory 

against the Wildcats having a point 

differential of zero through five 

games. 

This Saturday, Mike Bobo came out 

dialing up the passing game against 

a Wildcat defense that ranked 67th 

in passing defense. Carson Beck, 

who had received a lot of delusional 

criticism, showcased to the college 

football landscape what he is capable 

of doing when given the keys to 

the Georgia offense. Beck finished 

28-for-35 (80%) for 389 yards and four 

touchdowns. Outside of one forced 

third down interception, Beck was 

once again flawless. 

The best player in college football 

had over 120 receiving yards for the 

third straight game. It’s becoming 

difficult to describe how ridiculous 

it is watching Brock Bowers play 

football. His combination of strength, 

speed, and pass catching makes 

him unstoppable and a luxury for 

this Georgia offense. What was most 

impressive, however, was Georgia’s 

ability to not force the ball to Bowers. 

Georgia allowed the likes of Rara 

Thomas and Marcus Rosemy- 

Jacksaint to cause problems on the 

perimeter before specifically calling 

plays to Bowers. 

During a press conference this 

past week, Georgia captain and 

unquestioned leader, Sedrick Van 

Pran, explained that the Bulldogs 

feel as if they’ve been just a few 

plays away. When watching previous 

games that’s certainly evident. 

Georgia has dominated certain 

quarters, and have schemed excellent 

drives, but as a team, the Bulldogs 

had yet to put together a four-quarter 

performance indicative of their ability. 

That changed Saturday, and it should 

spark the Bulldogs moving forward. 

While the offensive production will 

be the storyline of this past Saturday, 

it is worth noting Georgia’s defensive 

dominance against an extremely 

talented Kentucky team. Georgia 

held Devin Leary to completing just 

10-for-26 passes (38%). Even more 

impressive than Leary’s completion 

percentage is the Bulldogs holding 

superstar Ray Davis to 59 yards on 

15 carries. Davis came into Athens 

having just embarrassed Florida’s 

defense running for 280 yards and 

three touchdowns. 

Pass rushing has been an issue for 

the Bulldogs, and while sacks are 

not the best metric to judge this 

defensive front by, they were able to 

take Leary to the ground on three 

occasions. Georgia’s defensive line 

also caused a multitude of Kentucky 

offensive holding the penalties, 

keeping the Wildcats behind the line 

of scrimmage for a large part of the 

first half. 

As we look ahead to an SEC road 

trip to Nashville, one that will have 

more Georgia fans than Vandy fans, 

the Bulldogs will look to utilize the 

Kentucky victory as a season definer 

that will propel the Bulldogs to 

2023 dominance. Simply put, this 

Georgia team is far too talented to 

continue to put together lackluster 

performances. It is also important to 

understand that when you have a 

first year starting quarterback, a new 

offensive coordinator, injured running 

backs, two new transfer receivers, 

Ladd McConkey out injured, and 

your most productive two players 

on the defensive line drafted in the 

first round, sometimes it takes a few 

games to find your identity. 

This team is not the same team as 

they were in 2022 and 2021. There are 

learning curves and weaknesses this 

team has to battle through just as any 

other championship caliber team. 

Regardless, the Bulldogs’ 2023 roster 

is something special, and there is 

plenty of reason to believe that they 

can achieve the goals they set out for 

at the beginning of the season. 

On Saturday in Nashville, Carson 

Beck will have another opportunity 

to air out the football against a 

struggling Vanderbilt Commodore 

defense. The Bulldogs will certainly 

look to start fast, as they did this past 

weekend, and if the coaching staff 

allows Carson Beck to establish a 

rhythm, watch out. 

The 2023 Georgia Bulldogs are 

arriving, and it’s time we bear witness.

beast that is No. 19. Get him 

involved early and often. Mike 

Bobo has done a tremendous job 

of getting creative with where 

he places Bowers all over the 

field to keep the defense on their 

toes. Another 300 yard plus game 

through the air from Carson Beck 

wouldn’t hurt either.

Since I was born in ‘89, I didn’t 

have the tremendous pleasure 

of watching No. 34 run wild at 

Sanford Stadium. I loved watching 

Gurley, Michel, Chubb and Swift 

go crazy on Saturday afternoons 

in Athens, but Brock Bowers is 

just on another level. He’s the 

only player since Herschel that 

we can all say, he might be just as 

good as Herschel. There’s nothing 

Brock can’t do, and maybe more 

importantly, won’t do for this 

Georgia team. He blocks like he 

loves it, he outruns DBs with an 

angle on him, and oh yeah, he can 

catch it amongst the best of them. 

He’s simply incredible.

A look back at what decided the game between Georgia and Kentucky. 

It took half the season, but the Dawgs are officially on fire after 

a big win against what should have been a physical Kentucky 

Wildcats team. However, every week is different. Smart said in 

the SEC, ‘humility is only a week away,’ and that’s just what the 

Cats experienced after beating the Florida Gators 33-14 just 

over a week ago.

No, this isn’t about how much juice your phone battery has; 

this was Carson Beck’s completion rate against the Kentucky 

Wildcats. Beck threw 35 times, completing 28 of those passes, 

and only one of them wound up being an interception— 

admittedly, it did turn into a Kentucky touchdown. But it 

was only because Beck was doing so well that he said he was 

just ‘feelin’ himself’ and threw it anyway. Now, that’s not the 

answer you want, but when you’re throwing that efficiently, 

maybe Dawg Nation can let that interception slide. Beck 

proved he can stand in a pocket and throw at an ELITE level, 

and that’s precisely what the Dawgs are going to need if they 

hope to get a third ring come January.

Georgia, with Beck at the helm, put up 389 passing yards 

against the Wildcats, which marked a season high for the 

Dawgs and a career high for Beck. Now, this achievement is 

less about a Carson Beck

statistic and more about Mike Bobo 

and the offense as a whole. That’s precisely what makes it 

so exciting. There have been many questions surrounding 

Bobo and this offense, including accusations of Beck being 

a bust, resulting in plenty of chatter. While this feat may not 

completely silence those who criticize the Georgia offense, 

it’s undoubtedly a testament to their ability to excel in the 

passing game.

On the ground, Georgia was able to run for an average of 

5.6 yards per carry against the Wildcats, which is notable 

because it’s a significant upgrade from the week prior when 

Georgia played Auburn and only averaged 3.6 yards on the 

ground. Smart said his team’s ability to run the ball was the 

‘difference’ in the game and opened up plenty more offensive 

opportunities. You can see it in the fact that the margin of 

victory was 38 points.

You can’t have a victory like this without the defense holding 

up on their end of the bargain, and that’s exactly what they 

did holding Kentucky’s star running back Ray Davis to only 

59 yards on the night. Davis was the face of the Cat’s offense 

coming into the game off of a crazy showing against Florida 

where he ran for 280 and three touchdowns, but that kind of 

stuff isn’t going to happen against Georgia, and the defense 

proved it. Davis averaged 3.9 yards on the night which is 

admirable, but not to his standard as he has a season average 

of 7.2. Bottling Davis up was a key factor in the Dawgs’ 

victory and proved yet again that Georgia is still the top 

dawg in the SEC East.

Selfishly, I’m not too fond of night games. Yes, the atmosphere 

is tremendous, and night photos can be exciting, but beginning 

photo processing after midnight means little, if any, sleep and 

a foggy Sunday. However, when the Dawgs trounce a quality 

opponent, roll up over 50 points and stifle the doubters and 

critics, it is an unforgettable experience. 

After struggling to put together a competent first-half offense 

for most of the first half of the season, Georgia finally left 

the locker room with unity of purpose and a nasty attitude. 

Undefeated Kentucky, fresh off a statement win against Florida, 

witnessed Mike Bobo’s four-quarter offense firing on all cylinders 

for the first time in 2023. I doubt they enjoyed the show. 

The Wildcats did not have a couple of mental lapses that cost 

them the game. Georgia didn’t get lucky. The Saturday Night 

Slaughter in Sanford was the dominant win Georgia’s fan base 

has patiently waited for all season. The Bulldogs answered all 

those nagging questions asked by national media with the type 

of performance that Dawg fans have grown used to during the 

back-to-back national championship runs. Face it, Kentucky; you 

came to Athens undefeated to face a pack of Bulldogs that had 

not lived up to its billing for five weeks but skulked back to the 

Bluegrass State humbled and thoroughly beaten. 

Carson Beck’s had a night. How about 28-for-35 for an 80 percent 

completion percentage and 389 yards, accounting for more than 

half of the Dawgs’ 608 total yards? Also, don’t forget that over half 

of Georgia’s total points came in the first half, burying the notion 

that the Dawgs don’t focus until the second half. 

For further evidence of dominance, note that the UK 

quarterback and touted running back struggled against the 

Bulldogs’ defense. QB Leary ended with 26 attempts for 128 

yards, and the previously unstoppable running back, Ray Davis, 

amassed 59 yards on 15 attempts. His longest gain was 11 

yards, compared to his 280 yards in last week’s win over Florida. 

Kentucky finished with 183 yards of total offense, while UGA 

had 173 rushing alone. That is what dominance looks like. 

Will the doubters and naysayers have an epiphany and declare 

themselves wrong about the 2023 Bulldogs? We all know that 

will not happen, but this win will force the talking heads to 

reevaluate. Some will say that Kentucky was overrated, and 

more evidence is needed before believing in Kirby’s 2023 

Dawgs. But it doesn’t matter what the critics think. This team has 

found itself and has set out to silence the noise.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER 

Carson Beck - As each game gets bigger, Carson Beck gets 

better. The 6-4, 220-pound junior out of Jacksonville, Florida 

has had the starting position with the University of Georgia 

for six weeks and he continues to get better each week and 

each challenge that comes across his face mask. Saturday’s 

performance against a Kentucky defense was his best yet. 

Carson controlled the offense and got the Bulldogs off to a fast 

start against a very formidable defense. His accurate passes and 

his cool demeanor on the field enabled Georgia to attack with 

many different weapons. The stats - 28-for-35 for 389 yards and 

four touchdowns. Those kind of numbers enable Georgia to get 

many players involved, which they did and it was just too much 

for Kentucky to handle. 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER 

Jamon Dumas-Johnson - After a tough week versus Auburn 

stopping the run, the junior linebacker from Hyattsville, 

Maryland called for the defense to step up and that is exactly 

what happened. JDJ challenged the defense to get back to 

Junkyard Dawg defense and that’s what they did onSaturday 

versus Kentucky, limiting their total offense to 183 yards. JDJ 

was the leader in the trenches as they shut down Davis, who 

had 280 yards the week before. An intense Bulldog defense limited Davis 

to 56 yards on 15 carries. If Georgia is going to repeat, the defense needs 

to maintain this type of aggressive attacking defense and JDJ will lead 

that charge. 

SPECIAL TEAM PLAYER 

This week my special team player will be the entire field goal team. The 

reason I am not going to put Peyton out there by himself is because it 

has been a collective effort of all 11 guys on the field goal team to create 

a consistent scoring opportunity. It’s easy to say Peyton got off to a shaky 

start, but with a new snapper, new holder and new protection upfront, 

it’s a challenge to gain consistency and that is what has happened at 

UGA. That consistency took advantage of three opportunities against 

Kentucky to help Georgia score on their first six drives against Kentucky. 

When the field goal team goes in there and successfully converts three 

points it becomes very demoralizing to the opponent and that’s exactly 

what we saw happen to Kentucky Saturday. It’s a great team effort to 

make field goals and I know it doesn’t happen with just a kicker and 

Peyton would be the first guy to tell you that. 

UNSUNG DAWG OF THE WEEK 

My unsung hero goes to the trenches. The big boys upfront on both the 

offense and defense were certainly the unsung hero Saturday against a 

very physical Kentucky team. These young men played a physical game, 

and when they do get physical, they usually go unnoticed. Saturday 

the offensive line stood up and imposed their powerful run game on a 

very stingy Kentucky defense. And likewise on defense, the Dogs in the 

trenches limited a Kentucky offense who had been running rampant 

throughout the SEC. When the trenches are Georgia’s, the winning streak 

continues. Great job boys … excuse me, men.

The first Saturday in October is in the books. Southern Cal prevailed 

late night in triple overtime. Miami, what in the world? Sheer stupidity. 

A week after losing to Bowling Green, the Yellow Jackets stun the 

Hurricanes, who ripped defeat from the jaws of victory. The stage is set 

for one of the biggest games of the season and what may turn out to 

be THE game in the PAC-12’s final season with Oregon at Washington. 

1. GEORGIA - The Bulldogs looked like the best 

team in the country last week with a 51-13 victory over 

Kentucky in a battle of undefeated teams. Georgia 

is 6-0, winners of 39 of the last 40 and off to Nashville to play 

Vanderbilt. It’s an early kickoff in Music City. 

2. OHIO STATE - It was a slow start for the 

Buckeyes in The Horseshoe against Maryland, as they 

trailed the Terps 10-0. But an interception return for 

a touchdown swung the game and Ohio State rolled to a 37-17 

victory. Ohio State visits Purdue on Saturday. 

3. FLORIDA STATE - Fresh off an open date, the 

Seminoles took down Virginia Tech 39-17 in Tallahassee, 

improving to 5-0. Florida State returns to Doak Campbell 

Saturday to take on Syracuse in another ACC battle. 

4. MICHIGAN - The Wolverines offense is rolling. 

In a tough looking matchup, Michigan was dominant 

in an old Big Ten showdown with Big Blue beating 

the Gophers 52-10. Indiana heads to the Big House Saturday, as 

Michigan aims to make it 7-0 

5. WASHINGTON - The Huskies were off this past 

week, getting fully charged for the invasion of the 

Oregon Ducks. Led by quarterback Michael Penix, the 

Huskies have one of the nation’s most dynamic offenses. Husky 

Stadium will be rocking Saturday for this dandy. 

6. OREGON - See above with Washington. Just 

like their rivals, the Ducks were off this past week, 

so it’s been all focus on the Huskies. Bo Nix is doing 

an excellent job at quarterback for Oregon. This sets up a 

tremendous showdown in Seattle. 

7. OKLAHOMA - The Sooners are back. Oklahoma 

won the Red River Rivalry in thrilling fashion, topping 

Texas 34-30 in Dallas. They’ve been able to savor it for 

a minute, as the Sooners have an open date. Next up is Central 

Florida in Norman. 

8. TEXAS - It was a heartbreaking loss for the 

Longhorns, as they fell to their nemesis Oklahoma 

in Dallas. Like Oklahoma, Texas is off this week. Then 

comes a trip to Houston. There are some looming pitfalls, but the 

Horns are still very much alive. 

9. SOUTHERN CAL - The Trojans escaped with 

a pulse pounding 43-41 triple overtime victory over 

Arizona in the coliseum, and are 6-0. The defense has 

some issues. The great national rivalry continues this week with a 

trip to South Bend to play the Irish. 

10. ALABAMA - The Crimson Tide picked up a huge 

win over Texas A&M in College Station. Bama is 3-0 in 

league play and looking good. The defense is playing 

very well during this SEC win streak. Arkansas heads to Tuscaloosa 

Saturday. 

11. PENN STATE - This is the third player in the Big 

Ten East. The schedule looked a bit funny. An open date 

after the win at Northwestern, and now a visit from 

UMass. All eyes will then be on Ohio State in Columbus 

as Penn State gears up for the Buckeyes. 

12. OLE MISS - The Rebels held off Arkansas 27-20 to 

pick up a big win behind the thriller over LSU. Ole Miss 

is off this week, then comes a road trip to Auburn. The 

Rebels offense is one of the best in the SEC.
