EDITOR IN CHIEF
The Bulldog Nation and its team united for a legendary weekend that will be
remembered for some time, however now it’s time for the roadie to Rocky Top!
ORS
FILL
How about that beat down Bullog Nation? My goodness,
what an incredible victory for our team and the
greatest fan base in all the land! While I have plenty of
appreciation for Ole Miss fans, it sure was nice exacting
the lopsided loss our Dawgs suffered (in Oxford) the last time the
two teams played.
And with it, Kirby Smart has now beaten every team in the
Southeastern Conference and has to be pleased to shake off what
is his worst defeat (back in 2016) to the Rebels during his first
season as Georgia’s head coach.
Well done, Coach Smart. Congrats to you, your staff and your
team.
While it would be nice to bask in the glory of thumping Ole
Miss and also start thinking about the post season, everyone
at Bulldawg Illustrated is certainly not taking our eyes off what’s
next. Just like playing at Auburn, winning in the not so friendly
confines of Neyland Stadium is never easy. And after the
Volunteers got roughed up at Mizzou last week, you can bet Josh
Heupel will
have his guys PHOTOS BY: ROB SAYE/BI
ready to shock
the world and
our Dawgs at
3:30 p.m. on
Saturday.
It is my sincere
hope that the
Georgia fan
base travels well
to Knoxville. Our
Logo Colorways
team is certainly
going to need
the support because when Neyland gets rolling, there are very
few places in college football that are THESE more CAN deafening. BE USED Old Tin
WITH 1 OR 2 COLORS
Lizzy, as I like to call the Volunteers massive stadium, is so electric
when things are going the way of the team in orange.
So what’s the best way for our team to prevent that from
happening? Simple answer, do exactly what you did against Ole
Miss. Take their very best punches in the beginning of the game
and then pounce and pounce and pounce again … Woof, Woof,
Woof!
As Greg Poole points out in his From the Field column (page 42),
our Dawgs are actually the most healthy they have been during
this season. The proof is in the pudding with the spectacular
game Kendall Milton had against Ole Miss. And boy didn’t he
deserve a big game the way he has struggled with multiple
injuries throughout his career. Keep getting stronger No. 2. There is
nothing like seeing you punish opposing team’s secondary.
Then there is Brock Bowers, who continues to amaze with his
exploits on the football field. All of last week, the rumors were
rampant that No. 19 would return to the gridiron just one month
after suffering an ankle injury. Guess what? They were true and
Bowers made the most of what was probably his final game
on Dooley Field in Sanford Stadium. While it is sad that the NFL
is most likely where Brock will be playing ball next year, the
Bulldog Nation still gets a few more games for the Red and Black.
Soak it up, Dawg fans. And since a roadie to Knoxville is always
a lunch pail game, it’s nice to know that Brock will be bringing
his physicality on each and every play. Something that all of his
teammates also do, I might add.
This issue will definitely get you ready for Saturday’s game. It’s
always more challenging to put BI out after a night game. But
when the game result is 52-17, the long hours are well worth it.
Once again, the BI camera has netted triple digit photos. Starting
on page 26, enjoy seeing some of your Bulldog brethren. The
Ole Miss weekend will forever be legendary. From the soggy,
yet massively attended ESPN GameDay to the Saturday night
drubbing, our team and its fans were fully united for the Georgia
G. Next up, ole’ Smokey and the Volunteers. Let’s keep things
rolling … see you in Neyland on Saturday. Go Dawgs!!
FROM THE
booth
JEFF DANTZLER
@jeffdantzlerTV
The Georgia-Tennessee rivalry is actually relatively new and thank
goodness the series record now tilts in favor of the Red and Black
The Georgia-Tennessee series is
what I call a “new” rivalry. If you
are under 40, just hang on before
getting too upset with me.
Before the Southeastern Conference
split into divisions - with a then unheard
of 12 teams and the first over league
championship game - in 1992, the
Bulldogs and Volunteers simply hadn’t
played very much. Since ‘92, these two
SEC blue-bloods have squared off every
year.
Herschel Walker’s debut in 1980,
so masterfully articulated by the
incomparable Larry Munson is the first
Georgia-Tennessee game I remember. I
was eight. It was the first game between
the two since 1973, when Andy Johnson’s
amazing athleticism - again, perfectly
described by the Mighty Munson - led
Georgia to a 35-31 comeback win at
Neyland Stadium. The Bulldogs trailed 15-
0, then got a safety off a fumbled punt on
a play where Georgia should have scored
a touchdown. Then it was Herschel’s two
scoring runs, Rex Robinson’s point after
touchdowns and a huge fumble recovery
that saved Georgia on a hot night in
Knoxville, and started Destiny’s Dawgs of
1980 on a magical run to a perfect 12-0
national championship campaign.
A year later, Georgia’s reigning national
champions rolled past the Volunteers
44-0 in Athens to open the 1981 season.
It was triumph on par with Georgia’s
defending national championship team
of 2022 kicking off the campaign with
a 49-3 win over the Oregon Ducks en
route to a second straight big ring.
Unfortunately, Georgia’s great 1981 team
came up just short of another national
championship, but that outstanding
Bulldog squad became the first in
program history to capture back-to-back
SEC titles.
When Georgia and Tennessee played to
a heartbreaking 17-17 tie to kick off the
1968 season in Knoxville on national tv,
it marked the first meeting between the
two since 1937. 1937! Those were the
early days of General Robert Neyland’s
dynasty at Tennessee. From 1899-1937,
the Bulldogs and Volunteers played 13
times, with both sides winning six games
and the 1906 contest ending in a 0-0 tie.
That 1968 tie was bitter for Georgia. The
Bulldogs led 17-9. It was the first year the
clock stopped on first downs. A friendly
Neyland Stadium clock operator helped
the Vols to several extra snaps via what
were surely honest snafus under the new
set of rules and guidelines. Tennessee
“caught” a touchdown with no time left.
Of course there was no replay, but it was
a drop. Then the Vols got the game-tying
two-point conversion.
Following the memorable triumphs
of 1980 and 1981, the Bulldogs and
Volunteers wouldn’t play again until
1988. I was 16, and in the stands with
my friend Bob Deal. Rodney Hampton
ran for 196 yards and two touchdowns,
Tim Worley ran for 144 and two scores
and the Dogs won 28-17. The Heavens
opened late in the fourth quarter - there
was some serious Munson magic on that
one … he loved the Dawgs and he loved
weather - and it was an unforgettable
night. I’d just turned 16.
At that point, Georgia led the all-time
series 10-8-2.
Georgia wouldn’t beat Tennessee again
until the next century. Yeah, that might
sound a little dramatic, but the Volunteers
won nine in a row against the Dogs,
Georgia’s longest losing streak against
one team in program history. Heading
into the 2000s, Tennessee led the all-time
series 17-10-2.
The Vols won the return game in
Knoxville in 1989. Then came 1992 and
the league’s splitting into divisions and
what would become an annual game.
It’s the new rivalry, and for Georgia fans
40 and under, right up there amongst
three of four biggest. The enemy, Florida
and Auburn were always the big three.
Georgia would close annually with
the Gators, Tigers and Yellow Jackets.
Honestly though, since divisional play,
mathematically, the Tennessee game has
meant more than Auburn in terms of the
standings. That proved true in 2017 when
the Bulldogs avenged a regular season
loss to the Tigers with a 28-7 victory over
Auburn in the SEC Championship Game.
In that 1992 game, my first sophomore
year at Georgia, the Dogs fell 34-31,
turning the ball over six times. It was
brutal. Not many were close after that.
Until Georgia finally won in 2000.
If you’re keeping count, I was 28, as Jim
Donnan’s Dogs topped Tennessee 21-10
and the goalposts came down in Sanford
Stadium.
The tables turned.
Georgia won four straight from 2000-
2003.
Tennessee then won four of six.
But since 2010, Georgia is a robust 11-2
against the Volunteers. The two losses
came in 2015 when the Vols rallied from
a 24-3 deficit to win in Knoxville and
the Josh Dobbs Hail Mary the following
year, Kirby Smart’s first as Georgia’s head
coach. Though as a redshirt freshman in
1995, he picked off Peyton Manning to
set up an almost win on a last second
loss, Smart was never on the winning side
when the Bulldogs and Tennessee played.
Under his watch, Smart’s Bulldogs have
won six straight against Tennessee while
ascending to the mountaintop of college
football. Georgia now leads the alltime
series 27-23-2. Leading the series
seemed highly unlikely at the turn of
the century. Especially to a now 51-year
old, under the tutelage of the greatest
poor-mouthers ever Vince Dooley and
Larry Munson, naturally born and bred
pessimist thoroughly enjoying the
grandest of times in Georgia football
history.
GEORGIA VS TENNESSEE
BY: JEFF DANTZLER
It’s another mega Southeastern Conference showdown this
Saturday, as the Georgia Bulldogs tangle with the Tennessee
Volunteers at Neyland Stadium. Georgia heads in with a record
of 10-0, 7-0 in the SEC. The Bulldogs are coming off an uber
impressive 52-17 victory over Ole Miss between the hedges.
Tennessee has a record of 7-3, and 3-3 in SEC play. The
Volunteers fell to Missouri 36-7 this past weekend in
Columbia, which knocked the Orange and White out of
contention in the SEC East, and clinched the division crown
for Georgia before the Bulldogs and Rebels kicked off.
There are much larger goals for Georgia, and every week
presents a monumental quest for the Bulldogs to uphold the
incredible standard of success under Kirby Smart’s watch at his
alma mater. Georgia will play in the SEC Championship Game
for the sixth time in seven years, becoming the first program in
conference history to accomplish that feat. No other team has
played in more than five over a seven year period.
But all focus is on Tennessee.
This will be just the third true road game for the Bulldogs
this season, and the second in a hostile environment. Georgia
edged Auburn 27-20 on the Plains, and beat Vanderbilt 37-20
in Nashville, with a majority of that crowd wearing red.
Josh Heupel has done an excellent job in Knoxville. The Vols
were laden with turmoil and scandal and coming off the worst
decade in program history. Last season, in just his second year
as Tennessee’s head coach, he led the Volunteers to an 11-2
record - highlighted by a memorable win over Alabama - and
Orange Bowl championship victory over Clemson.
Expectations were ramped up. The Vols other two losses this
year came at both Florida and Alabama. They are undefeated
at home, and Neyland Stadium is one of the loudest and most
difficult places to play in college football. Heupel’s Vols are
searching for that signature win, and a strong close to this
season, while spoiling two-time reigning national champion
Georgia’s aspirations for a shot at the College Football Playoff.
The Bulldogs have won 43 of their last 44, 27 straight, 26
consecutive SEC regular season contests, 37 successive overall
regular season games and capped a perfect home slate by
extending the Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium winning streak
to 25.
Georgia has beaten Tennessee six consecutive times.
That’s a tremendous amount of success and list of streaks.
But humility is just a week away.
CARSON BECK (QB #15) - Beck continues his stellar 2023 season as he
and the Bulldogs’ passing offense cruised past a motivated but outmanned
Ole Miss defense. Beck threw for over 250 yards for the tenth straight game
and finished the contest with 306 yards and two touchdowns. Neyland
Stadium is one of the toughest environments for opposing teams, and
with the Vols’ crowd expected to be as raucous as always, look for Georgia’s
gunslinger to utilize his unique ability to block out the noise and continue
his Heisman campaign against a suspect Tennessee secondary.
continue his impressive form. The wideout has 22 receptions for 365 yards
and one touchdown on the year. Against Ole Miss, Thomas jump started
Georgia’s first drive with a 44-yard reception, showcasing his impressive
run after the catch ability. Tennessee has a vulnerable passing defense, and
it would not be a surprise to see Thomas targeted in one-on-one situations
down the field.
OSCAR DELP (TE #4) - Delp has been exceptional filling into the
starting lineup due to Brock Bowers injury, and even though Bowers
has returned, Delp will still be an essential piece of the Bulldog offense.
Mike Bobo loves utilizing two tight end sets whether in the run game
or passing game, meaning Delp’s minutes should not decline much.
Georgia will still draw up plays to the big tight end in the red zone, and a
vulnerable Tennessee secondary fits the mold for a favorable matchup the
Bulldogs can exploit.
NAZIR STACKHOUSE (DT #78) - Stackhouse followed his
exceptional Missouri performance with another strong outing as the
Bulldogs’ defensive lineman racked up three total tackles on the night
and tacked on a sack. Stackhouse, known as a dominant run stopper, has
been exceptional recently at disrupting the passer from the interior line,
something the Bulldogs’ defense has lacked this season. Against a hightempo
Tennessee offense, Stackhouse will be relied upon to both stop the
run against Tennessee’s potent rushing attack and disrupt Joe Milton on
passing downs to prevent the deep ball.
TYKEE SMITH (DB #23) - Smith finished the Ole Miss game second in
tackles only behind CJ Allen. The West Virginia transfer has been Georgia’s
most impressive player in an uber-talented secondary this season, leading
the group in total tackles (46) and interceptions (4). Last year against the Vols,
Javon Bullard was the x-factor for the Georgia defense, blitzing out of the
STAR position that Smith currently plays. Smith will have to hold up strong
in both pass coverage and be effective in the run game if Georgia plans to
leave Knoxville undefeated.
CJ ALLEN (LB #33) - Allen, in his first career start, may have been
the best Bulldog on the field against Ole Miss. Many questions arose after
Georgia captain and leader Jamon Dumas Johnson went down with a
broken forearm. It was expected that Coach Kirby Smart was going to give
the nod to the talented freshman to start the game, but whether Allen
could dominate and communicate in an effective manner remained to be
seen. Allen excelled, finishing the game with a team-high 9 total tackles and
adding on a sack and a tackle for loss. The freshman will have another tall
task against Tennessee’s offense this week, but expect Allen to put together
another impressive performance in Knoxville.
BY JEFF DANTZLER
In Georgia’s 28-17 season-opening victory over
Tennessee Between the Hedges in 1988, Rodney
Hampton ran for 196 yards and two TD’s and Tim
Worley had 144 and a pair of scores.
Kevin Butler, one of Georgia’s greatest players,
and Willie Gault, one of Tennessee’s legendary
receivers, were teammates for the 1985 Chicago
Bears Super Bowl championship team.
The big play in the Bulldogs 41-14 victory over the
Volunteers in 2003 was Sean Jones 92-yard fumble
return for a touchdown on the final play of the first
half to give Georgia a 20-7 lead.
VOLUNTEERS TO WATCH
BY COBY SERINA
JOE MILTON (QB #7) - If you wanted to build a quarterback in a
lab, Joe Milton is pretty much what you would get. He checks all the
boxes when it comes to size, being 6-5 and a hefty 235 pounds. Plus,
he has an absolute cannon attached to his shoulder that most folks are
calling an arm. Adding to the fact that he can run—he’s done so almost
70 times this season, averaging 4.4 yards per carry—you’ve got yourself
a legitimate threat at the quarterback position.
SQUIRREL WHITE (WR #10) - For starters, all you have to say
about this young man is that he was running 4.3 forty-yard dashes in
high school. And once you get to college, you usually get better, so
needless to say, the Volunteers have a wideout with elite speed coming
out of their corner. The Vols have taken advantage of this, having made
White their leading receiver with over 600 yards on the season off of
just forty-nine receptions. One thing to note is that his longest play this
year went for 83 yards, so the Dawgs need to be wary of that speed
moving forward.
JAYLEN WRIGHT (RB #0)- Efficiency is the name of the game
when it comes to Jaylen Wright and the way he runs the football. He’s
making the most out of every single one of his carries, and he has the
numbers to speak to it too. Averaging a whopping 7.2 yards per carry,
he’s the leading running back in the Southeastern Conference in yards
per carry and has the second-highest average in the whole conference,
right behind LSU’s quarterback Jayen Daniels. Kirby Smart said last
year not to be deceived, and that Tennessee really is a running team, so
controlling Jaylen Wright is going to be a big step in defeating the Vols
in Knoxville come game day.
ELIJAH HERRING (LB #44) - Talk about a guy who just gets
around all over the field; Elijah Herring has amassed 64 tackles so far
this season, and you can attribute that to his brutish size at the position.
He’s a six-foot-three, 238-pound off-ball linebacker with the ability to
move. This guy gets to where he needs to be, and the numbers back
him up. He’s only a sophomore getting starting-level playing time with
the Vols. The talent’s there; we’ll just have to see how it lines up against
the likes of Georgia.
TAMARION MCDONALD (DB #12) - This senior defensive back
has definitely learned how to use his size to get to the ball. His 6-2,
208-pound frame got him six pass deflections last season and has led
him to four on the season to this point—and an interception. He’s been
in this system for a while, and you can just tell because of the way he’s
getting it done in the tackling game too. He’s a top-five tackler on the
team with 40 tackles on the season.
JAMES PEARCE JR. (DL #27) - Here comes the Big Kahuna—
literally. 6-5, 242-pound makes for quite the man, and that’s exactly
how James Pearce Jr. has been playing in 2023, having reached the
quarterback eight different times this season. That statistic has him
second in the SEC (in quarterback sacks). He plays primarily on the
edge, so he’ll have his try against the likes of Amarius Mims and Earnest
Greene. The Pearce versus Mims matchup may be one to keep an
eye on, given the size that the two bring to the table. Mims has some
height on him, but Pearce should prove to be a good test for this
Georgia offensive line.
BY JEFF DANTZLER
When it comes to great basketball players for the
Volunteers, at the top of the list is Hall of Famer
Bernard King, a three-time All-American & three-time
SEC Player of the Year.
The most decorated baseball player in Volunteers
history is Todd Helton, a two-way great and Tennessee
quarterback, who had a.316 career average in 17 years
with the Colorado Rockies.
In the first seven seasons of the legendary General
Robert Neyland’s coaching tenure at Tennessee, he
guided the Volunteers to an incredible 61-2-5 record
from 1926-1932.
THE
FIVE
Georgia vs. tennessee
BY: JEFF DANTZLER
JOSH HEUPEL
1. Vols Running Game - Tennessee boasts one
of the most potent offenses in the Southeastern
Conference. Josh Heupel has Tennessee’s attack
cooking. Last year, as the Volunteers posted their
best season in two decades, it was a high flying aerial
attack - piloted by quarterback Hendon Hooker
- that grabbed the headlines. Joe Milton came in
after Hooker was injured, and directed Tennessee to
a victory over Vanderbilt and then a triumph over
Clemson in the orangest Orange Bowl ever. Milton
has been very good this year, and the Vols have a
potent rushing attack. There are three outstanding
running backs on the Tennessee depth chart, plus
Milton is a dangerous threat to run. Jaylen Wright
is the headliner for the Vols. He’s putting up All-SEC
numbers. The Georgia run defense is faced with yet
another stiff test of rushing attacks and ball carriers.
That’s been the case since the open date and it will be
again next week.
2. The crowd in Knoxville - The noise and energy
will be a factor. Especially if Tennessee jumps in
front and this thing is tight the whole way through.
There were two games, when looking at Georgia’s schedule before the
year, that were clearly going to come against raucous crowds with the
Bulldog faithful substantially outnumbered - Auburn and Tennessee.
The Volunteers are smelling a victory and you can bet all the Orange
clad Tennessee faithful will do their collective part to try and make the
Bulldogs stump their toe.
3. Larry Munson - The greatest college football announcer ever had
three of his most famous moments at Neyland Stadium. Perhaps there
is some fate with that since the Mighty Munson was hired to Georgia
from Vanderbilt and Nashville. There was Andy Johnson and the thrilling
comeback in 1973. My God a Freshman, Herschel Walker’s legendary
debut in 1980 was memorably articulated by the master - “five, 10, 12, he’s
running over people, Oh You Herschel Walker!” David Greene found Verron
Haynes - following a pair of great grabs by Randy McMichael - and Georgia
stunned the Volunteers in the 2001 Hobnail Boot game. Between the
victories of 1980 and 2001, the Bulldogs had lost five straight in Knoxville
to the Volunteers. Neyland Stadium is a mighty tough place to win, and
these three Bulldog triumphs brought out some true Munson magic.
4. My Record at Tennessee - Back in the 1990s, the Bulldogs lost
nine straight to Tennessee in football. The records in men’s and women’s
basketball in Knoxville weren’t great. Our baseball team in the 1990s,
believe it or not, once lost 17 consecutive games to the Volunteers. I
witnessed and was a part of broadcasts for a lot of Georgia losses to the
Vols, especially on the banks of the Tennessee. We got swept in baseball,
I think it was 1999, and I was lamenting to a couple of my Tennessee
friends how terrible my record was in Knoxville in football, baseball and
basketball. Some Tennessee fan who had made his way into the press box
overheard, and said “well you will make sure you’re at Neyland Stadium
this fall won’t you … huh huh huh he chuckled. Well, I wasn’t there, but we
did lose, and I hosted the 5th Quarter Show in Athens afterwards.
5. Vol Fan Rob - A friend of mine recently passed. Silas Marion “Rob”
Robertson, aka on Athens airwaves as “Vol Fan Rob” is no longer with us.
He lived in Athens for over 40 years and was a die hard Tennessee fan. He
cheered for Georgia, his father’s alma mater, except when the Dogs played
the Vols. I’d text him every Saturday during football season, unless it was
the Georgia-Tennessee game, “good luck to the Vols.” We had a lot of fun
through the years. He was a generous, giving guy who loved magic and
loved to laugh and play jokes on his friends. Rob had wonderful tailgates.
They were themed. For instance, if Georgia were hosting South Carolina,
then fried chicken was the main menu. For some of the SEC Network
telecasts that I’m fortunate to broadcast, we are provided with black golf
shirts with the “SEC Network” logo. A couple were dropped off for me prior
to calling a soccer game. One didn’t fit, so I took it to Rob, and he loved
it. I said, now don’t get busted, or they could trace this to me and I could
get in trouble. These things are valuable. They are for broadcasters only.
Valuable stuff here. Well, sure enough, a couple of weeks later, he was
in Charlotte for the Tennessee-West Virginia game and sent me pictures
wearing the SEC Network shirt. Walked right in with the Tennessee team
and even had a couple of ESPN staffers ask him when the production
meeting was? He was a character. He’ll be cheering on Tennessee
Saturday, and then both the Vols and Bulldogs the rest of the way until
they meet again. It’s going to feel strange not texting him, win or lose,
after Saturday’s game. Another friend gone too soon that I sure do miss.
The Ole Miss beatdown represents
what this team is capable of when
dominating up front on both sides …
The Georgia Bulldogs
showcased a dominant
performance against
the Ole Miss Rebels
last weekend, exceeding many
expectations. The game echoed
memories of the 2022 National
Championship against TCU,
where Georgia, though favored,
delivered a resounding 65-7
victory. While the 51-17 triumph
over Ole Miss wasn’t as extreme,
each game has its unique
dynamics.
Georgia’s offense, almost
defensively strategic,
demonstrated remarkable
efficiency with eight scores in
ten possessions, seven of which
were touchdowns. The strategy
was reminiscent of making Ole
Miss play catch-up, successfully
executing “explosive plays” and
leveraging their skilled players to
maintain the lead.
On the defensive front,
Georgia prevented big plays by
employing their usual two high
safeties, Javon Bullard and Malaki
Starks, effectively thwarting
attempts to go over the top.
Despite some challenges, the
duo redeemed themselves with
crucial interceptions, exemplified
by Bullard’s
interception closing
out the first half.
Georgia’s ability to
neutralize the Rebel’s
rushing attack, holding
Quinshon Judkins to
a mere 3.4 yards per
carry, proved pivotal.
Although it took the
Bulldogs some time to
adjust, their defensive
prowess limited the
Rebels to just three
points in the remaining
three quarters.
The challenge ahead
involves sustaining
this defensive
strategy, especially
with linebacker
Jamon “Pop” Dumas-
Johnson sidelined.
The emergence of
freshmen C.J. Allen
and Raylen Wilson to
fill this role indicates
a need for continued
growth in this aspect.
COBY
SERINA
Looking forward to facing
Tennessee, a team with a
statistically more impressive run
game, Georgia must prioritize
stifling their ground attack. With
the Volunteers averaging 5.6
yards per carry and boasting a
dynamic rusher in Jaylen Wright
averaging 7.2, replicating the
successful run-stopping strategy
from the previous year becomes
imperative.
Recalling the importance
of neutralizing the run in last
year’s victory against Tennessee,
Georgia can capitalize on their
opponent’s predictable passing
situations, relying on their
formidable defensive line to
pressure the quarterback. This
defensive performance will
be crucial in a hostile Neyland
Stadium environment, aiming to
silence the crowd and secure a
victory on the road.
The Bulldogs’ recent success
should serve as a blueprint for
their upcoming challenges,
emphasizing a potent offensive
strategy and a steadfast
commitment to stifling the
opponent’s run game on
defense.
The longtime Voice of the Tennessee Volunteers,
the exceptional Bob Kessling, once again offers his
SPORTS A VIEW FROM ...
Bob succeeded the legendary John Ward, one of the
greatest announcers ever, and has carved his own
legacy as one of the very best in the business. A legend
follows a legend. Bob also happens to be one of the
BY JEFF DANTZLER
Knoxville
CAN YOU TALK ABOUT
JOSH HUEPEL’S IMPACT
ON THE PROGRAM’S
RESURGENCE?
Rather remarkable. He inherited
a mess. Coming off a 3-7 season
with 63 players and an NCAA
investigation, he never made any
excuses. He said he would coach
the guys on the roster and recruit.
Within a year and a half Tennessee
was ranked No. 1 in the first College
Football Playoff rankings last year.
Really an unbelievable turn.
LAST YEAR, BEATING
ALABAMA, WINNING THE
ORANGE BOWL, WHAT
DID THAT MEAN TO THE
TENNESSEE FAITHFUL?
Plenty. People are still talking
about the win over Alabama. Both
teams were terrific on offense.
Tennessee just made plays at
the end to win the game. The
win over Clemson in the Orange
Bowl helped the program take
another big step and gathered
momentum for this season.
WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON
GEORGIA?
Talented, deep, tough and a
quarterback who is getting better.
WHAT DOES TENNESSEE
NEED TO DO TO BEAT
GEORGIA?
Run the football. Tennessee’s
three running backs have been
exceptional. Jaylen Wright, Jabari
Small and Dylan Sampson have
all contributed. Tennessee is the
only team in the SEC to have three
backs each averaging over 50
yards per game. With a banged up
and, at times, makeshift offensive
line, Tennessee leads the league in
rushing. The Vols will need to run
the ball against Georgia to keep
them honest and then try to have
Joe Milton connect on some big
plays in the passing game.
WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR
FAVORITE PLAYERS
THAT YOU’VE GOTTEN TO
COVER IN YOUR GREAT
CAREER?
Eric Berry just returned to Neyland
Stadium to receive his award for
going into the College Football
Hall of Fame this year. He is a
class act on and off the field.
Jason Witten is one of my all-time
favorites. Great tight end, but a
better person. Casey Clausen had
that California Cool appearance,
but what a competitor. No
Tennessee quarterback won more
tough games on the road. It was
fun watching Jalin Hyatt grow.
Quiet and reserved when he first
arrived. Had a hard time getting
on the field. Suddenly under
Josh Heupel, things clicked. He
went from a guy who couldn’t
get on the field to a Biletnikoff
Award winner who scored five
touchdowns against Alabama.
Hollywood should make a movie
about his journey.
WHAT ARE YOUR
FONDEST MEMORIES OF
CLASSIC CALLS, I’VE GOT
TO THINK THE HAIL MARY
IN ATHENS, AND KICK TO
BEAT ALABAMA ARE AT
THE TOP OF THE LIST.
Those certainly are at the top of
the list. Casey Clausen’s game
winner to Jason Witten in the sixth
overtime thriller against Arkansas
also stands out. Hopefully I’ll get
a chance to call a few on the way
to a championship before I ride off
into the Big Orange sunset.
STARTING WITH THE NEW
SCHEDULE IN 2025, HOW
WOULD YOU LIKE TO
SEE THE SEC SET UP THE
FOOTBALL SCHEDULE?
This gives me headaches thinking
about it. An easy solution would
be to go to 9 or perhaps even
10 conference games. Coaches
would fight that while stating
publicly they are all for what is
best for the league. I remember
a while back when the SEC went
from 6 games to 7 and then 8 and
the coaches weren’t happy about
it. Thinking that the Tennessee-
Georgia, Tennessee-Florida and
Tennessee-Alabama games
would go away on an annual
basis is tough to think about, but
it appears to be headed that way.
Greg Sankey is one of the best
commissioners in the history of
college athletics. I have faith he
will come up with a plan that
will work and please most of the
people involved …I hope.
FROM THE
field
BY GREG POOLE
GEORGIA - 52, OLE MISS - 17
Domination is what we saw on a damp Saturday night in
Athens. The “D” word is heard often in sports commentary. Many
of those comments are overstatements, but Saturday night in
Athens, the Dawgs treated us to a performance that begs even
more robust descriptors.
Yes, Ole Miss moved the ball, especially early in the contest.
Then Georgia’s offensive and defensive lines took control of the
game, producing a maelstrom of explosive plays that swept away
the Rebels’ upset dreams.
Many football fans tend to follow the ball and cheer those who
touch it, but it is very often line play that determines a contest,
and Saturday was no exception. Carson Beck had time on most
snaps to stand tall in the pocket and find open receivers, and he
did. Not only did he have time to throw, but his accurate, linedrive
passes found receivers all night.
Bulldog running backs surged through the holes carved in
the Rebels’ defense, squashing their hopes and upset dreams.
Time after time, Georgia’s offensive line torched the visitors,
creating seams (often chasms) for their backs to exploit in the
ground game. The line also gave Beck time to find targets, and
find them, he did. Let’s also praise the defensive line. The Rebs
came into the game averaging over 38 points per game, and the
Dawgs held them to less than half their season average, with
the line challenging every play.
Early in the season, many observers picked Tennessee to
challenge the Dawgs for the final SEC East title before League
expansion eliminates divisions. Of course, that was before a bad
loss to Florida, followed by losses to Alabama and Missouri in
their latest outing. Although the game has lost its impact on the
division race, the Vols will spend the week preparing to pin an
“L” on the Dawgs’ season. Georgia may be healthier than they
have been since the opener and is ready to put together solid
back-to-back performances, readying the team for Tech, Bama
in the SEC Championship and their back-to-back-to-back quest
in the playoff.
KEVIN BUTLER’S
PLAYERS OF THE GAME
COMPILED BY JEFF DANTZLER
OFFENSIVE PLAYER
Kendall Milton -Against Ole Miss, Kendall Milton helped
the Georgia offense take over the football game by having a
tremendously successful, brutal running game. The offensive
line imposed their will and determination on the Rebels
throughout the game. Milton has always been a dangerous
weapon and Saturday might have been his best explosion
yet. Milton took over the rushing game and finished with nine
carries for 127 yards with a long TD run of 51 yards. The Rebels
like to score, but could not match the run game of Georgia
because their defense could not stop Georgia. If Milton can
have a 14.1 yard average, go ahead and buy your tickets to
the national championship game. Great game Kendall.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER
CJ Allen - With the absence of JDJ the Bulldogs turned to
the next man up, CJ Allen, the freshman out of Barnesville,
Georgia. He stepped in and performed like a seasoned veteran.
CJ actually brought a little bit more speed to the middle of
the field, and it was very evident by the pursuit laterally that
the Bulldogs defense showed to stop a very productive Ole
Miss offense. CJ performed much like every linebacker that
has come out of Georgia recently with nine tackles, four solos
and a sack in his debut as a starter for the Bulldogs. This is
what separates the Bulldogs right now from most of their opponents, the
development of players, and more importantly, having them ready to hit
the field. CJ Allen was proof that the system is working.
SPECIAL TEAM PLAYER
William Mote - The senior snapper from Hoover, Alabama goes
unnoticed and that means he’s doing an excellent job. At 6-0, 230-pound,
William is certainly not a small figure. But his talent as a snapper goes
beyond compliments because he has been flawless this year. Saturday
was a perfect example. The conditions were a little bit challenging, but
Mote did what he does best and that’s consistently snap the ball to the
holder and Brett Thorson, our punter. As Payton Woodring goes on a
streak 14 for 14, it starts with William and being able to work with a new
holder and new kicker. William starts the foundation with a pure snap.
We always take these guys for granted, but believe me never take your
snapper for granted. Keep it up William … make your final march to
another championship.
UNSUNG DAWG OF THE WEEK
The unsung hero this week is really the overriding unsung hero for the
whole year. Kirby Smart, his coaching staff and developmental staff
once again highlighted the foundation of this great Georgia program.
As easy as the fans think it is to replace a linebacker, a running back, a
receiver, it just does not happen easily. It has to be developed. Georgia’s
staff has done an unbelievable job of preparing this team to focus on
the next thing, the next game, the next moment. It is unbelievable
how influential these coaches and the developmental staff is at the
University of Georgia are week in and week out. They are the foundation
to championships, and we are reaping the benefits of one of the best
coaching, staffs and developmental staffs in all of college football.
STATS THAT
MATTER
GEORGIA - 52, OLE MISS - 17
BY: COBY SERINA
A look back at what decided the game between Georgia and Ole Miss.
27
Georgia’s win over Ole Miss ran the Bulldogs’ SEC winning streak to a
remarkable 27 games, one shy of the SEC record held by legendary Hall of
Fame coaches Paul “Bear” Bryant and Gene Stallings. “Rare air,” is how Smart
described the streak when asked about it after the Bulldogs crushed the
Rebels. Winning 28 in a row will not be a cake walk as the Bulldogs must
travel to Rocky Top for a top-25 matchup against the Vols. Tennessee got
pounded by a formidable Missouri team this past weekend, but Tennessee
is a different team
53
at home in front of what will be a raucous Neyland
Stadium crowd. If the same Georgia team that whipped Ole Miss shows up
in Knoxville, the streak will keep rolling.
127
Kendall Milton rushed for a career-best 127 yards on only nine carries.
Milton also found the endzone twice behind a dominant performance by
Georgia’s offensive line, which was continually praised by Kirk Herbstreit
and Chris Fowler during the telecast. Overall, Georgia amassed about
300 yards on the ground and five touchdowns. Milton’s performance
was noteworthy in that he ran like the back that many envisioned when
he came to UGA. “Kendall ran really hard tonight. I thought that was
like the toughest and hardest I’ve seen him run, “Smart noted. “He ran
through tackles, he ran through people’s face. He ran like he was mad. He
approached the whole week that way. He’s really stepped up and become a
more vocal leader.”
611
I have not heard many Mike Bobo critics of late. Georgia’s NFL-style offense
compiled an easy 611 yards against the Rebels in what was a perfectly
balanced blend of run and pass. Georgia put up 311 yards through the
air, with Carson Beck connecting on 18 of his 25 pass attempts for 306
yards. Beck continues to look like an NFL-ready quarterback playing
in a sophisticated offense. Beck has the freedom and ability to make
adjustments at the line of scrimmage to put Georgia in the right play
and formation for the defensive scheme. With Bowers and McConkey
finally healthy at the same time, it felt like Beck almost had too many
weapons at his disposal. A powerful and unrelenting running game only
makes this offense more dangerous.
9
Georgia lost its All-American linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson to injury
in the Missouri game and was forced to start true freshman CJ Allen at
middle linebacker against a tricky and potent Ole Miss offense that is built
on deception and speed. No worries. Allen rolled into Dumas-Johnson’s
spot and finished the game with a team-high nine total tackles. Allen
played fast and got better as the game progressed. Georgia should be just
fine in the middle with Smael Mondon, Jr. and Allen running down plays
and creating havoc as the signal callers of the defense.
254
occasions, but for the most part the talented back was kept in check,
3.4
Quinshon Judkins was averaging about 4.7 yards a carry coming into
the Georgia game. Georgia held the All-SEC back to a mere 3.4 yards
per carry, limiting him to 75 yards on 22 attempts. This was key to the
Bulldog’s dominant defensive performance, as Judkins is more than
capable of taking over a game. Judkins did find the endzone on two
allowing the Bulldogs to bring more pressure that stymied quarterback
Jaxson Dart’s effectiveness. Missouri’s Cody Schrader, a likely first team
All-SEC performer, eclipsed the 100-yard mark against the Bulldogs a
week earlier when he tallied a well earned 112 yards on the ground. A
motivated Georgia defense was set on not giving up consecutive 100-
yard rushing performances.
FOOTBALL
TOP 12
JD’S
BY: JEFF DANTZLER
There are just two weeks remaining in the regular season, and the
fight for those precious four playoff spots is hot. The five major
conference undefeated teams all won, and they are all 10-0. The
pressure mounts every single week. The margin for error is razor
thin. The most anticipated games this coming week will be in
Corvallis and Knoxville.
1. GEORGIA - The Bulldogs were extremely impressive
in a 52-17 victory over Ole Miss, improving the twotime
reigning national champions to 10-0. Georgia has
a tough road test Saturday, venturing to Knoxville for a date with
the upset-minded Volunteers.
2. OHIO STATE - The Buckeyes took care of struggling
Michigan State 38-3 to up the record to 10-0 on the
season. Ohio State takes on Minnesota in a battle of Big
Ten originals on Saturday. The big one with Michigan looms. The
Buckeyes defense is playing great.
3. WASHINGTON - The Huskies are having one of
those charmed seasons. Washington has a fantastic
team and there is some mojo working in Seattle. The
Huskies beat Utah 35-28 to improve to 10-0. Their
tough sledding continues at Oregon State Saturday.
4. MICHIGAN - The Wolverines put down Penn State
24-15 in Happy Valley to make it 10-0 on the season.
There is controversy surrounding Jim Harbaugh and
the program, but they keep on winning. A tricky trip to Maryland
awaits and then the big one.
5. FLORIDA STATE - The Seminoles beat Miami 27-
20, holding off their arch-nemesis’s upset attempt. The
Hurricanes have dealt Florida State a lot of heartbreak
through the years. FSU is 10-0. North Alabama heads to
Tallahassee Saturday then it’s off to the Swamp.
6. TEXAS - The Longhorns jumped out to an early
lead and then had to hold on to beat TCU 29-26. Just
like with Kansas State, another bullet dodged. Be
careful this week. Texas heads up to Iowa State, which
has pulled off many an upset through the years.
7. ALABAMA - The Crimson Tide is playing as well
as any team in the country right now. Jalen Milroe
accounted for six TDs in a 49-21 win over Kentucky to
clinch the SEC West. They have a tuneup with Chattanooga and
then Auburn on the plains.
8. OREGON - The Ducks beat USC 36-27 to make it 9-1
on the year. Oregon is in the thick of the PAC-12 race
and the Ducks still have playoff and conference title
hopes. They’ll try not to stub their webbed feet at Arizona State
this week.
9. MISSOURI - The Tigers posted a resounding 36-7
victory over SEC East foe Tennessee to improve to
8-2 on the year. It was a great bounce back from a
tough loss at Georgia. Now Florida comes to town and
Mizzou has a shot at another signature win.
10. OREGON STATE - The Beavers blew away
Stanford 62-17 to make it 8-2 on the season. Oregon
State is tough and explosive. The Beavers host
Washington on Saturday in a game that will have
major ramifications. Then it’s Oregon. What a finish!
11. OLE MISS - The Rebels fell to Georgia 52-17 in
Athens this past Saturday. Ole Miss is 8-2, still in the
running for a major bowl berth. Louisiana Monroe
comes in for a tuneup visit before the Egg Bowl finale
in Starkville.
12. TULANE - The Green Wave edged Tulsa 24-22
and sit at 9-1. Tulane’s lone loss was to Ole Miss in
September. They are in a good spot to once again be
that Group of Five team in the New Year’s Six Bowls.
Next up is Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton.
