LORAN SMITH:
ON OSCAR DELP
Associate Director, UGA Athletic Association
Public Relations & Development
“Oscar Delp, a sophomore
tight end from Cumming,
Georgia, will be one of
the new faces among
the tight ends this fall.
He is a promising receiver
who will measure up to Georgia’s
distinguished reputation for great tight
end play. He saw action as a reserve in
13 of 15 game last fall in which he logged
5 catches for 61 yards on the season. He
saw significant action in the Chick-Fil-A
Peach Bowl against Ohio State. He
enrolled early at Georgia in January and
led all receivers in the G-Day game with
seven catches for 91 yards.
A tight end naturally wants to catch
the ball and in the Georgia system there
is plenty of opportunity for that. A key
to a tight end’s success, however, is his
ability to make critical blocks which
keeps the offense moving down the field.
Oscar is always getting the attention of
pro scouts who come to Georgia practices
who appreciate his excellent blocking
efficiency.”
FROM THE
EDITOR
VANCE LEAVY
EDITOR IN CHIEF
The 2023 Georgia Bulldogs are a work in progress, which is why part two
of the September homestand is a great opportunity to gel and get better!
The Bulldog Nation lost one of its best ambassadors and
greatest Dawgs last week with the passing of Frank W.
“Sonny” Seiler. He will be laid to rest on Wednesday joining
his wife Cecilia high above in heaven. Cheri and I loved Sonny
(and Mrs. Seiler) beyond words, so we are greatly looking forward
to our Sonny Seiler tribute that will come out in our UAB issue in
a few weeks. Until then, we send an abundance of prayers to all
of Sonny’s family, friends and associates.
While last week started with sad news, it ended with joy as
everyone in Bulldog Nation reconvened to finally see the 2023
Dawgs.
For some, the slow start against UT Martin was alarming, which
I find both comical and annoying. As Greg Poole points out in
his From the Field column (page 42), this 2023 team is a work in
progress.
Didn’t we kind of expect this?
After all, the 2022 undefeated, National Champions consisted
of a Heisman Trophy finalist (who also was just shy of being a
three year QB starter) leading the offense. And Bulldog fans
should never under value what safety Christopher Smith (another
three year starter) meant to the Georgia D’s contribution to backto-back
titles.
To further enhance my point here, I could rattle off a few more
positions where new personnel is taking over for departed great
Bulldogs, but I don’t think it is necessary. I sincerely hope any fans
who are disgruntled with a 41 point victory perhaps got too early
of a start in the hydration department this past weekend.
Seriously, this week’s game versus Ball State is a great
opportunity for this 2023 Georgia team to take another step
towards playing championship football. And as our cover
displays, it’s also part two of the four-game September
homestand.
Yes I know Georgia football isn’t a baseball organization and
that it would be preferable if the schedule this month had a bit
more pizazz. But one could also counter that the month ahead
is perfect for a team trying to gel with a host of new players and
leaders. That is why it is imperative that the best fan base in the
country continues to be loud and proud each week their Dawgs
take the field, no matter the opponent.
This issue of BI should get you ready for Saturday’s noon kickoff.
In Sports, you will find our usual offerings, plus the new bells
and whistles we added in last week’s issue. With one game in the
books, that means Bulldog legendary place-kicker Kevin Butler is
back with his Players of the Game (page 45). And this season each
week, KB will also name an Unsung Dawg of the Week. I won’t
ruin the surprise, but I suspect you know whom his inaugural nod
went to.
In our Social section, be sure to first turn to pages 24-27 to see
photos from the Appointments at Five Farewell Party for Kitty
Culpepper and Jenny Sligh. After almost four decades (36 years)
of owning and running their Five Points shop, there is no telling
what Kitty and Jenny have up their sleeves next. In my opinion,
the recent boom of the Five Points area has a ton to do with
these two ladies. Their spunk is unmatched. Cheers to them and
best of luck to Jarrett Kemp as she carries on the legacy built at
Appointments at Five.
You will also find over 60 fan photos from the UT Martin game
(pages 30-38). The excitement for the first game of the new
season certainly shines through with the images the BI camera
captured.
Finally, in the Social section, our Georgia Girls (Mimi Whelan,
pages 28, 29), Proust Q&A (Troy Lanier, page 40) and MixTape
(Gary Warenfelt, page 39) series continue. As a UGA history major,
I loved reading that Troy, Gary and I are kindred spirits. Can I get
a “Go Dawgs” for the Franklin School of Arts and Sciences? And
if you are into design and fashion, you will love getting to know
Mimi Whelan in Georgia Girls. Is it bad that I’m familiar with many
of the brands she mentions because of Cheri’s closet? Or is it from
credit card statements?
That’s going to do if for me. Please enjoy our Ball State issue,
which is also part two of Georgia’s four-game September
homestand. Play ball and Go Dawgs!!
JEFF DANTZLER
@jeffdantzlerTV
In the history of Georgia football, contests involving the state of Indiana
are rare, but the ones on record are quite memorable for Bulldog Nation!
Saturday at high noon, the twotime
reigning national champion
Georgia Bulldogs battle the
Ball State Cardinals Between
the Hedges on Dooley Field at Sanford
Stadium. Ball State University is located
in Muncie, Indiana, famed as the alma
mater of longtime late night talk show
host David Letterman. This will be the first
ever meeting between Georgia and Ball
State, and though there have been just a
few games in Red and Black history against
teams from “The Hoosier State,” the state of
Indiana figures prominently into some of
the most glorious victories in Bulldog lore.
A victory for the ages in Indianapolis,
Indiana and a triumph to never be forgotten
over Notre Dame - which resides in South
Bend, Indiana - delivered cherished national
championships. Two additional victories
over the Fighting Irish were signature wins
on the ascent to greatness in the Kirby Smart
era. Georgia has also posted a couple of nice
bowl wins over Purdue.
Let’s start with 1980, as Vince Dooley and
Erk Russell led the Bulldogs to a perfect
12-0 national championship season,
capped with a 17-10 victory over Notre
Dame in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on
New Year’s Day 1981. Freshman sensation
Herschel Walker ran for 150 yards and two
touchdowns behind a hard-nosed veteran
line featuring Hugh Nall, Nat Hudson, Tim
Morrison, Jeff Harper, Jim Blakewood,
Wayne Radloff and Joe Happe. Meanwhile
a tenacious group of seniors on defense,
spearheaded by Scott Woerner, Frank Ros,
Chris Welton, Jeff Hipp, Robert Miles, Pat
McShea and Mike Fisher kept coming up
with stops and turnovers. Despite being
outgained and completing just one pass
- the biggest of the game, as Amp Arnold
hauled in a Buck Belue aerial for what
proved to be the clinching first down -
the Bulldogs prevailed and sat atop the
college football mountaintop.
It was Georgia’s first ever undisputed
national title. The Bulldogs were
consensus national champions in 1942,
as Frank Sinkwich and Charley Trippi led
coach Wally Butts juggernaut to an 11-1
record, the school’s first ever Southeastern
Conference crown and a Rose Bowl win
over UCLA. Eight polls had Georgia No.
1. Ohio State was voted No. 1 in the (still)
oldest poll, the Associated Press. So that
Bulldog team is considered the consensus
national champion, but not undisputed
and unanimous, as Georgia was in 1980,
2021 and 2022.
Georgia also was voted No. 1 in at least
one poll in 1927, 1946 and 1968.
But that victory in New Orleans over the
Irish, that was the one where there was no
doubt and no debate, Georgia was No. 1.
It would be 41 years until the
THE INDY PICK-SIX (KELEE
RINGO) HEARD AROUND THE
WORLD!
Bulldogs would again win the national
championship. There were close calls.
There was heartache and heartbreak in
New Orleans following the 1981 and 1982
seasons. Georgia lost just once in 2002,
but there were two undefeated teams. The
Bulldogs were No. 2 in 2007, and lost the
first of three heartbreakers to foil Alabama
in the 2012 SEC Championship Game that
cost Georgia a shot at Notre Dame and the
national title.
The second of those three heartbreakers
to the Crimson Tide cut the deepest
wound, as Georgia fell in overtime 26-23
in Atlanta in the National Championship
Game. The Bulldogs never trailed, until
after the final play.
That 2017 season was the launching
point of the Kirby Smart dynasty at
Georgia. And the takeoff game was a
20-19 triumph in South Bend over Notre
Dame, with a majority of the crowd clad in
red and black under the Gold Dome. That
would mark the first of six consecutive
years (and counting) of Georgia finishing
in the top ten. In five of those campaigns,
the Bulldogs have posted 11-1 or 12-0
regular season records en route to the SEC
Championship Game.
In 2019, the Bulldogs again edged the
Irish, this time hanging on 23-17 in the
highly anticipated showdown Between
the Hedges. That gives Georgia a perfect
3-0 record all-time against Notre Dame.
Even though it’s just three games - and
they were all knee-knockers - not too
many schools can say they have a perfect
record against the Irish.
The crescendo came on January 10,
2022, as the Bulldogs, trailing 18-13, got
a two-point stop then scored the final 20
points of the game to defeat Alabama at
Lucas Oil Field in Indy to capture the 2021
national championship, avenging a loss to
Bama in the SEC Championship Game.
Kelee Ringo’s clinching pick-six with
Georgia leading 26-18 with Heisman
winner Bryce Young trying to drive the
Crimson Tide to a tying TD and 2-pointer,
was the knockout blow, delivering
indescribable joy to the Bulldog Nation.
Georgia-33, Alabama-18.
I’ve always been grateful that the
game wasn’t played in New Orleans or
Atlanta. Too much scar tissue, too many
heartbreaks.
Yes, that frigid night in Indianapolis
will always be paradise to the sons and
daughters of Georgia. In fact, on the
weather app on my phone, the places
I have saved, where I live, love and
frequently visit are: Athens, St. Simons
Island, Amelia Island, Lake Sinclair in
Milledgeville, Lake Toxaway, Savannah
and my hometown of Statesboro. And
Indianapolis.
GEORGIA VS BALL STATE
BY: JEFF DANTZLER
Riding a new school record 18-game winning streak, the
two-time defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs host
the Ball State Cardinals from the Mid American Conference on
Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium.
Georgia comes in with a record of 1-0, beating the UT Martin
Skyhawks 48-7 this past Saturday evening in Athens. Ball State
is facing a second straight Southeastern Conference foe. The
Cardinals fell to Kentucky 44-14 in Lexington last weekend.
This will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.
Georgia hosted Kent State out of the MAC last season and beat
the Golden Flashes 39-22 to make it 4-0 on the perfect 15-0
campaign.
Ball State got off to a good start in the Commonwealth, taking
a 7-3 lead late in the first quarter on a Layne Hatcher touchdown
run. But Kentucky took control in the second period and built a
23-7 halftime edge.
The Bulldogs were a bit disjointed offensively in the first half
against UT Martin. Georgia led 17-0 at the half, and then steadily
built the advantage over the tough Skyhawks, who are the two
time defending Ohio Valley Conference champs.
This will be the second start at quarterback for fourth-year
junior Carson Beck, who was 21 of 31 through the air for 294
yards and a touchdown through the air, while running for a TD
that gave the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead in the second quarter. Brock
Vandagriff and Gunner Stockton also played well at quarterback,
with both leading the Bulldogs on scoring drives, including a
field goal from Peyton Woodring. The freshman was two-for-two
and perfect on extra points in his Georgia debut.
Brock Bowers was sensational yet again, the two-time All-
American sparked Georgia with five catches for 77 yards and a
three yard rushing touchdown that got the Bulldogs on the board.
Georgia is hopeful of getting back several offensive standouts
who missed the opener, including All-SEC wide receiver Ladd
McConkey, running back Daijun Edwards and receiver Marcus
Rosemy-Jacksaint.
Ball State was 5-7 a year ago, with four of those losses coming
by seven or fewer points. The Cardinals are confident they can
contend for a spot in the MAC Championship Game. A second
straight game against an SEC opponent will have Ball State battle
tested when it opens MAC-action in week five at Western Michigan
following home dates with Indiana State and Georgia Southern.
Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs open SEC play next week against South
Carolina in Athens. The record 18-game winning streak Georgia
is seeking to extend is yet another tremendous accomplishment
for the Bulldogs under his watch, highlighted by six straight top
ten finishes and the back to back national titles. Georgia has
won 34 of its last 35 games dating back to the 34-11 Orange Ball
victory over Michigan in the 2021 College Football Playoff.
BULLDOGS TO WATCH
BY: CLAY WATKINS
OSCAR DELP (TE #4) - The highly touted high school prospect has settled
into a much larger role this season after the departure of Darnell Washington.
Delp highlighted his Week One performance with an acrobatic touchdown in
the second half against UT Martin. Delp’s offseason weight training regimen has
helped the talented tight end add 15 pounds, and despite pass catching being
the tight end’s forte, Delp is looking to improve his physical ability at the line of
scrimmage. Delp should feature heavily for Georgia’s offense Week Two.
LINEBACKER
EARNEST GREENE III (LT #71) - Greene III has earned the right to protect
Carson Beck’s blindside for the Bulldogs in 2023. With a new quarterback at the
helm, Georgia is searching for its next long-term safety net to establish reliable pass
protection for gunslinger Carson Beck. Greene III played exceptionally well against
UT Martin, allowing Beck to keep his jersey clean. Look for the freshman to boost
his confidence in another non-conference battle this Saturday against Ball State.
DOMINIC LOVETT (WR #6) - Lovett finished his Georgia debut by racking
up three catches for 25 yards. The Missouri transfer wideout is expected to be a
critical piece of this offense moving forward and is yet another weapon for Mike
Bobo to take advantage of. Lovett’s elite route running and exceptional catch
radius should provide all the makings for a dominant performance against the
Cardinals.
JAVON BULLARD (S #22) - Georgia shifted the talented defensive back to
safety this offseason where Bullard and Malaki Starks combine forces to create
one of the most dominant pairings in all of college football. In his first game
back at safety, Bullard managed to record four tackles against UT Martin. Bullard
looks to put together another dominant performance early in the season to set
the tone for a Georgia secondary with immense talent.
KAMARI LASSITER (CB #3) - Lassiter was dealing with a foot injury during
fall camp but was able to take the field against UT Martin, where he managed
to completely lock down his side of the field. With the departure of Keele Ringo
to the Philadelphia Eagles, Lassiter is now Georgia’s new No. 1 cornerback. The
junior showcased his coverage skills, and when given the opportunity, he will
certainly look to come downfield and make a tackle. As the leader in the Bulldogs’
secondary, he aims to eliminate Ball State’s aerial threat this Saturday in Athens.
XAVIAN SOREY JR. (LB #18) - Sorey Jr. is coming off an excellent
spring, and with multiple years of experience in Georgia’s system, the talented
linebacker is in a prime position to have a breakout season. The junior played
significant minutes against UT Martin, asserting himself into the rotation of
one of the most talented inside linebacker groups in the SEC. With a second
consecutive team coming to Athens from outside a Power Five conference,
Sorey Jr. will be looking to capitalize on his meaningful minutes.
Legendary Georgia great John Isner has retired
from a tremendous professional tennis career with
16 career singles and eight doubles titles, reaching
a ranking as high as No. 8 in the world.
The second longest winning streak in Georgia
history came from 1945-1947, as the Bulldogs
captured 17 consecutive triumphs, highlighted by
the perfect SEC title 11-0 campaign of 1946.
In 1983, Georgia became the first school to have
both its men’s and women’s basketball teams, led
by Hugh Durham and Andy Landers, reach the Final
CARDINALS TO WATCH
BY: COBY SERINA
KIAEL KELLY (QB #1) - This is Ball State’s gadget guy. He may not start the
game for the Cardinals or be their go-to signal caller, but when Ball State wants
a play, they’re running with Kelly. Similar to UT Martin and given the inherent
disparity in talent, Ball State will more than likely have a hard time running against
Georgia’s defensive front straight up. So designed QB runs may be the way the
Cardinals get it done on the ground. UT Martin’s Kinkead Dent (QB) ran 6 times
for 47 yards last week. The numbers are there. It’s just up to Ball State to seize the
opportunity.
KIAEL KELLY
QUARTERBACK
BRADY HUNT (TE #80) - Working his way back from an ankle injury, he
should be up and at ‘em come game time in Athens. He could have but was
unlikely to play against Kentucky, but Ball State will definitely want him against
the defending back-to-back national champions. The next man up, Tanner Koziol
caught 8 receptions in Hunt’s absence. That stat alone goes to show just how
important the tight end position is to this Cardinal’s offense. Hunt could add
another element to Ball State’s game if he’s healthy.
MARQUEZ COOPER (RB #15) - If this guy sounds familiar, it’s because he
was in Athens a year ago just dressed in different colors. Last season Cooper suited
up in Kent State’s blue and gold and ran for 90 yards and a touchdown against the
Junkyard Dawgs, and now after transferring to Ball State he should be primed and
ready for another chance to prove he can dance with the big dawgs. The Cardinal’s
running back room took a hit with Vaughn Pemberton enduring an injury in
Lexington, so Cooper should be stepping in as the next man up.
BRADY HUNT
TIGHT END
COLE PEARCE
LINEBACKER
TY ROBINSON (WR #2) - A transfer from Colorado, Ty Robinson has waited
two years for an opportunity to see the field, and it seems like he’s finally got
it. In his two years in Buffalo, he caught only nine catches for 95 yards and a
touchdown. After one game with Ball State, he’s already put up five catches for 90
yards and a touchdown. Standing at 6’3 and almost 200 pounds, Ball State may try
and use him to pick on Georgia’s smaller sized corners.
COLE PEARCE (LB #40) - Usually lined up alongside his partner Clayton
Coll, this senior linebacker is going to take on an even bigger role leading the
Cardinal’s defense against the Dawgs after Coll sustained an injury against
Kentucky last week. Pearce had the fourth most tackles on the team last year and
played well in the outing against the Wildcats last week with four tackles and even
fitting a pass deflection in there. This guy’s going to be on the field regardless of
whatever the defense does so expect the Cardinals to lean on No. 40.
JORDAN RILEY (CB #3) - Against Kentucky, Riley was all over the field
leading Ball State in tackles with five and not allowing any passing touchdowns
in the process either. A performance like that isn’t too surprising once you figure
out that he was leading the team in tackles and passes defended last year. He’s
a physical player who clearly isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty and can hold his
own when the ball is in the air. Manning the outside corner position, he’ll give the
Dawgs a hard time Between the Hedges.
FIVE
Georgia vs. ball state
DGD KEVIN BUTLER WITH LETTERMAN ON
THE SET OF THE DAVID LETTERMAN SHOW
PHOTO PROVIDED
1. Larry Bud Melman’s boss went to Ball State - It’s
a pretty well known fact that legendary late night talk show host
David Letterman is the most famous alumni of Ball State University in
Muncie, Indiana. The one-time weatherman went on to great fame, first
following the great Johnny Carson on NBC and then moving into the
11:30 p.m. slot on CBS. The school of Mass Communication at Ball State
is named for the proud Cardinal alum.
2. Kevin Butler was on Late Night With David Letterman
- College Football Hall of Fame Bulldogs legend, and Bears great Kevin
Butler appeared on Letterman in 1989 when the show was filmed on
location in Chicago. The other guests were Chicago Mayor Richard Daley,
John Mellencamp and the Playmate of the Year. Supertoe Butler kicked
an extra point to the top level in the Chicago Theater with Letterman
the holder. “Letterman wore a Georgia sweatshirt when he met me
and Cathy the night before,” Butler said. “ We went down to the theater
the night before to make sure it was possible. It was.” Butler can now
be heard co-hosting the Bulldog Brunch from the Hilltop Grille on the
Georgia Bulldogs Radio Network.
3. REM NYC SNL tale - Amongst Athens most famous residents are
the four members of the iconic rock and roll/new wave band REM. Uber
talented drummer Bill Berry told a story that when REM was the musical
act on Saturday Night Live, he was in a bathroom at 30 Rock nearby the
stage and brilliant funnymen and SNL cast members Dennis Miller and
Chris Farley were in the same restroom, unaware of Berry’s presence.
Miller said something along the lines of, “I just don’t get it with this
band,” while Farley retorted, “Oh they’re so great, I love them.” Berry said
he never alerted them to his presence for fear of embarrassing anyone.
But it made for a humorous tale.
4. Farewell Big John - Big stages in New York, one of the most
beloved Georgia athletic greats ever, “Big” John Isner called it a career
at the U.S. Open. What a career it was, from his national championships
at Georgia, runs through Grand Slam Tournaments and professional
titles, the 6-10 dynamo always did it in first class fashion while proudly
representing his beloved alma mater. Following John’s career brought
tremendous joy to so many. There is no lineage or legacy like Georgia
Tennis, and John Isner will always be a cornerstone of its remarkable
history.
5. 10 % - Following Georgia standouts on the PGA Tour has been a
great source of joy. Three of the 30 players in the field of the season
ending Tour Championship were Bulldogs - Sepp Straka, Russell
Henley and British Open champion Brian Harman. And a final loud “Go
Dawgs” goes to Straka and Harman for representing their squads in the
upcoming Ryder Cup.
FROM THE
INTERN
Offensive skilled positions by committee
and quarterback Carson Beck’s solid start ...
Something about Georgia
looked different last
Saturday. The most obvious
being the fact that the
Mailman Era of Georgia football
has officially come to an end with
Carson Beck taking the helm at
quarterback. For the past two
years, Stetson Bennett truly felt
like the face of this team, and
now without him, it’s almost like
we’re looking for a new identity– a
new it guy. There are players like
Brock Bowers and Malaki Starks,
but they just don’t have the story
that Stetson did. Bennett’s rise
from walk-on to back-to-back
natty champ really added a layer
of umph to this team that can’t be
replaced– just appreciated.
When it comes to Georgia’s
identity, in times past it’s been
easy to look into the backfield
to see who’s holding it down.
Of course, Georgia is known for
its rich history at the running
back position with names like
Herschel Walker, Todd Gurley
and Nick Chubb being just a few
examples of the type of guys that
have suited up in the Red and
Black in the past. Sophomore
Branson Robinson out of Madison,
Mississippi was looking like that
guy rolling into 2023 with plenty
of momentum from his freshman
campaign but that was dashed
with a fall camp injury that ended
his 2023 season before it started.
In his time on the field
Robsinson ran for 330 yards
and three touchdowns,
including a score in the national
championship against TCU. The
young man was even drawing
comparisons to DGD Nick Chubb.
Robinson’s injury in addition
to the questionable status of
veteran backs Kendall Milton and
Daijun Edwards hasn’t helped with
this minor case of identity crisis
either. Of these veteran backs just
mentioned, only Milton played
against UT Martin, but split reps
almost equally with freshmen:
Roderick Robinson and Andrew
Paul. At the moment, the Georgia
backfield is a hodgepodge of
names and ages that don’t really
have one guy that stands out
beyond the crowd.
The wide receiver situation is
pretty split too with an assortment
of injuries and suspensions
keeping some older guys out last
game. The arrival of new names
COBY
SERINA
like Dominc Lovett, RaRa Thomas
and even the ascension of walk-on
Mekhi Mews has been exciting
to follow, but those guys are still
figuring it out too.
This leads us back to the
quarterback position and the story
that lies in Carson Beck. A fourth
year player and Florida native from
the recruiting class of 2020, Beck
is one of the few quarterbacks–
maybe even players– to wait this
long and have yet to start for
their original team. In this everchanging
college football world,
conference realignment, NIL
and the portal are all constantly
influencing players across the
country to pack up, leave, and
give it a shot somewhere else, but
Beck has stayed true to the G. That
alone is impressive. The fact that
he beat out former-five star Brock
Vandagriff who also chose to stay
and compete for the job is also
quite the feat.
You just don’t see that type
of character almost anywhere
anymore, and it’s this trait that’s
really aiding in Beck’s leadership
role this year. The guys in the
locker room have really taken
notice as well. Senior defensive
lineman Warren Brinson said,
“He’s been grinding. He’s the first
quarterback in the building …
He’s there getting notes, and he’s
leaving last.”
Beck’s performance was a little
shaky at the beginning, but was
admittedly still impressive for a
first time starter. Almost 300 yards
through the air with a passing and
rushing touchdown in under three
quarters worth of play is going to
be overlooked by most, but that’s
definitely something to smile
about. Beck was expected to be
a toolsy gunslinger with sneaky
run ability, and that’s just what the
Bulldog Nation got.
Yes, it was just UT Martin, and
yes, the Dawgs shouldl probably
see good numbers from Beck
against Ball State before they start
SEC play against South Carolina.
But, keep in mind, this was literally
his first start since high school.
There’s still some rust he has to
shake off and the only way he
can do that is through live fire.
This is just the beginning of the
Carson Beck era at the University
of Georgia, and it’s off to a hot start
with plenty of room to fire up as
the season continues.
A VIEW FROM ...
ball state
WHAT ARE BALL STATE’S
GOALS THIS SEASON?
Ball State’s goals are to make
it to Detroit for the MAC
Championship game and win a
bowl game.
YOUR SCHEDULE IS
VERY TOUGH, DO YOUR
FANS, PLAYERS AND
COACHES EMBRACE THIS
CHALLENGE?
With a double dip into the SEC
to start the season, everyone
surrounding Ball State Football
has embraced the challenge
and is ready to showcase their
talents. With many players having
experience from the Penn State
and Tennessee games the last
couple of years, they are ready for
the SEC challenge.
THE MAC LOOKS VERY
COMPETITIVE AGAIN THIS
SEASON, YOU PLAYED
A LOT OF CLOSE GAMES
LAST SEASON, WHERE
DOES BALL STATE FIT IN?
Ball State is ready to compete and
be a top team in the MAC. The
Cardinals have a plethora of players
who have gone through the MAC
schedule several times and know
what is at stake each week.
IS THERE EXCITEMENT TO
HEAD TO ATHENS AND
PLAY GEORGIA?
There is a bunch of excitement
for Ball State to play at Georgia.
The opportunity to play against
SEC competition, and the backto-back
national champions, is
a chance nobody is taking for
granted.
WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON
THE BULLDOGS?
Georgia is a powerhouse
in college football and well
respected by people from coast to
coast. They reload talent and have
proven over the past several years
they are a fantastic program top
to bottom.
WHO ARE SOME
CARDINALS TO KEEP AN
EYE ON?
A few Cardinals players to keep
an eye on are graduate student
Clayton Coll at linebacker and
offensive lineman Ethan Crowe.
Those two exemplify what it
means to be Ball State Cardinals.
WHAT DOES BALL STATE
HAVE TO DO TO HAVE A
SHOT AT THE UPSET?
Winning on third down and the
turnover margin are two areas I
think will be key versus Georgia.
The Bulldogs are always sharp
in those two areas, so being
successful there goes a long way
toward success.
MIMI WHELAN
Cheri Leavy’s rapport with her favorite tastemakers and
UGA Alumnae brings you plenty of doggone good inspiration!
Foundation:
2.
NAME: Mimi Whelan
FAMILY: Daughter of Dr. Edward and
Grace (UGA Grad) Whelan; youngest of five
siblings, three of which graduated from
Lamar Dodd at UGA; Eddie Whelan (art X)
and Daisy Whelan (textiles)
HOMETOWN: Savannah, Georgia
CURRENT TOWN: Charleston, South Carolina
WHAT YEARS AT UGA: 2013-2017
SCHOOL/DEGREE: Lamar Dodd / BFA interior
Design
PROFESSION:
Since college I have been working in Luxury Residential
Interior Design. I spent five years in NYC with Michelle
Gerosn Interiors where I worked on projects spanning from
the Hamptons to Palm beach and everywhere in between.
Michelle was a true mentor and allowed me true creative
freedom. I was even able to have a hand in designing tile
and lighting for collaborations. About a year ago, I moved to
Charleston, South Carolina and began working for Amanda
Lindroth. With Lindroth Design, I’ve expanded into designing
boutique hotel and retail spaces. I am currently managing
new boutique hotels in Kiawah River, The Dunlin an Auberge
Resort Property and the new Hill House Home Boutique. I
have always needed my own creative outlets from my work ...
so I always have a few side gigs going on in the background.
Accolades:
I started drawing fashion
illustration in college “meemz”
and have continued to draw
as an outlet and business.
I also have a business with
my two sisters where we
combine our individual artistic
training (interior, textile and
graphic design) to design our
own product and spaces and
consult for small creative companies.
Beach House Studio- creative ideas and
problem solvers at your service!
FROM THE
field
BY GREG POOLE
A win is a win is a win. However, based on the crowd-expressed
grumblings that trickled from the stands onto Dooley Field
Saturday evening, the Bulldogs’ performance fell short of many
fans’ expectations. In his postgame press conference, Coach Smart
reminded us that his team underwent substantial personnel
turnover after the championship in January, and is beginning to
find its way to playing “winning football.”
Winning back-to-back national championships resulted in
substantial interest from the NFL in the Dawgs roster, and those
champions’ production now must be replaced. Georgia is still one
of the most talented programs in the country, but talent must
undertake its trial by fire. Nine months ago, Georgia destroyed TCU
and added another natty to the trophy case. UT Martin reminded
us (especially in the first half) that the Bulldogs’ core roster has
undergone another transformation, as is the case annually in
college football. Experience has left the roster, replaced by rookies
and a few transfers.
The all-world recruits that Smart and his staff have gathered
from around the country must process from talented to
experienced. That began Saturday night.
The Bulldogs are finding the pack leaders, and the defense
is ahead of the offense. Offensive leadership exists, but the
machine was not consistently humming last Saturday. No matter
how realistic or how difficult the practices, the real thing exposes
the weakest links.
As a photographer, I start almost all offensive plays watching
the center/quarterback with a powerful lens. Those two
players touch the ball on most plays, so if I’m going to find and
photograph the player with the ball, it starts right there. At
the snap, that view becomes a jumble of bodies. When a UGA
offensive line clicks and exerts control on an inside run, a hole
opens, and I get a great shot of a running back at full throttle.
Too many times against UT Martin, there was no hole.
STATS THAT
MATTER
GEORGIA – 48, UT MARTIN - 7
BY: CLAY WATKINS
A look back at what decided the game between Georgia and UT Martin.
559
Georgia’s offense racked up a total of 559
yards against UT Martin this past Saturday.
While on paper this number is terrific, it
did take the Bulldogs’ offense a little time
to start clicking. Of course, expectations
have to be managed in the first game of the
season, particularly
559
with a new quarterback
and offensive coordinator. On top of that,
Georgia is still dealing with a plethora of
injuries at the running back position. It
is likely that Georgia used only a limited
portion of their offensive playbook, but
through committee effort, especially in the
second half, the Dawgs were able to move
the football and offer a glimpse of what’s
to come.
0
The Bulldogs did not turn the football over
at all against UT Martin. Carson Beck made
smart decisions with the football in his
first game as a starter, and the committee
of running backs held onto the football
throughout the game. Despite Brock
Bowers putting the ball on the ground
once, Arian Smith was able to recover
it with no real threat from a Skyhawk
defender in sight. The turnover battle will
be a critical aspect of Georgia’s season
because they possess all the talent needed
to win football games, but self-inflicted
wounds could derail their chance at a
historic threepeat.
3
Three different position players scored
rushing touchdowns this past Saturday.
Carson Beck scampered into the end zone
after executing a Stetson Bennett-like
juke for a four-yard touchdown. Brock
Bowers also found the end zone with an
end-around play, a play that Bowers scored
multiple touchdowns on last season. Rod
Robinson II made his debut memorable by
finding the endzone, highlighting 3a strong
opening performance. The Bulldogs ran
the ball at a high level inside of the redzone
which is something Georgia struggled to
do early in the 2022 season, but that was
not an issue against the Skyhawks.
11
Eleven players caught passes from the
collection of Bulldog quarterbacks on
Saturday. Georgia has immense talent at
the receiver position with a culmination of
transfers, developed talent, and youthful
freshman. Brock Bowers, the best tight end
in the country, is a mismatch no matter
how defenses elect to line up against him
while Oscar Delp
11
put his skillset on full
display against UT Martin. Ladd McConkey
and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint did not play
for the Bulldogs, two of Georgia’s most
experienced and established wideouts.
With Carson Beck acclimating into Mike
Bobo’s offense, Georgia will continue to
rely on the collection of talented pass
catchers to make their quarterback’s life
less stressful.
1
Georgia was able to sack the quarterback
just once against the Skyhawks. The
Bulldogs’ pass rush has been questioned
throughout the offseason, and while they
weren’t able to get to the quarterback
frequently, there shouldn’t necessarily
be any need to hit the panic button. UT
Martin’s passing offense consisted of quick,
limited-read plays where the Bulldogs’
outside linebackers and defensive line
simply didn’t have enough time to reach
the quarterback. Given the opportunity in
upcoming games, Georgia’s defensive front
should silence the doubters.
KEVIN BUTLER’S
PLAYERS OF THE GAME
Each week, College Football Hall of Fame Bulldog legend
Kevin Butler picks his Players of the Week. And this season,
he will also name an Unsung Dawg of the Week. Kevin is one
of the most decorated players in Georgia and Chicago Bears
history, and each week co-hosts The Bulldog Brunch from The
Hilltop Grille in Athens.
— COMPILED BY JEFF DANTZLER
OFFENSIVE PLAYER
Brock Bowers TE - Well let’s just pick up where we left off
some eight months ago in LA …. Brock is the best player
in college football!!! It really is that simple folks. You don’t
have to be an expert to realize his talent on the field. Bowers’
play Saturday further proves the value of the TE in the UGA
offensive. Brock had seven receptions for 77 yards which
averages 15.4 yds per catch. Not only was his performance
typical of Brock but his play excites the team and they
respond. Brock is certainly one of the leaders of this team and
his play motivates the team as he did Saturday. I am not sure
if a TE can win the Heisman, but if it goes to the best football
player in college football - Brock is in that conversation.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER
Malaki Starks - the sophomore from Jefferson, Georgia
continues to be a dominant force on the field. After a
freshman season that put the country on notice, Malaki
is going to be a star in 2023. Starks started the year with a
very physical performance against the Sky Hawks with eight
tackles (three solo), five assists and a pass deflection. That kind
of play will allow the defense to be as aggressive as needed
depending on their opponent and that is a dream come
true for the defensive coordinator. On a defense that returns
eight starters, Malaki is a special talent and the Dawg Nation will enjoy
watching this star shine!
SPECIAL TEAM PLAYER
Peyton Woodring - Well I think you know the direction I am going in
on this topic … PLACEKICKER. In his first game as a Bulldog, Peyton
Woodring, the freshman kicker from Lafayette, Louisiana made his debut
against the Skyhawks and did it with consistency and poise. Getting your
first start in football always gets your mind wandering and your heart
beating, which can be a problem if those feelings take over. That was not
the case for Peyton Saturday going 2 for 2 on FGs and 6 for 6 on extra
PTs. Job well done and my advice, ”On to the next kick.” … Peyton will be
a key in many games to come for the Bulldogs.
UNSUNG DAWG OF THE WEEK
Sonny Seiler - the passing of Sonny was a blow to the Bulldog Nation
and on the weekend UGA XI - BOOM took over duties at UGA. Sonny
dedicated his life to the University in so many ways, but none compared
to his family’s commitment to providing our mascot over the last 60+
years. The most loved mascot in all of college football, Uga, lives here at
the University of Georgia. Sonny will always be watching his University
from above and every Saturday Sonny will be watching his Mighty
Bulldogs play and he will have all his beloved Bulldog mascots next to
him! What a sight to see!!!
FOOTBALL
TOP 12
JD’S
BY: JEFF DANTZLER
Labor Day Weekend is always a great kickoff to the season, and it was
filled with some high profile games. Colorado and Deion Sanders made
quite a splash with a 45-42 win over TCU, which lost in the national
championship game a year ago. North Carolina and Florida State
chalked up big wins. It was not a good weekend for the SEC. The PAC-12
looks very strong. What a twist, as the once proud league disintegrates.
Enjoy every Saturday.
1. GEORGIA - The Bulldogs broke in a new
quarterback and placekicker in the season-opening
48-7 win over UT Martin. Georgia is riding an 18-game
winning streak into Saturday afternoon’s meeting with Ball State.
The Gamecocks loom.
2. FLORIDA STATE - No doubt, the win of the week
goes to the Seminoles. They dominated the second
half in a 45-24 victory over LSU this past Sunday
night in Orlando. Florida State, on a short week, hosts Southern
Mississippi Saturday night.
3. ALABAMA - The Crimson Tide was cooking
against Middle Tennessee, rolling to a 56-7 victory in
Tuscaloosa. Now it’s time for the big showdown with
Texas Saturday on the Captone. Last year’s game was a classic that
Alabama pulled out.
4. MICHIGAN - The Wolverines, with a lot of
distractions, handled East Carolina 30-3 in the season
opener. Michigan has high hopes this season, searching
for another playoff berth, and then some. UNLV heads to the Big
House this Saturday.
5. NOTRE DAME - The Fighting Irish made quick
work of Tennessee State Saturday on the heels of an
impressive victory over Navy in Dublin, Ireland. Sam
Hartman has made a big difference. Saturday at N.C. State could
be a tough test for Notre Dame.
6. OHIO STATE - The Buckeyes opened the season
with a 23-3 Big Ten victory over the Indiana Hoosiers
in Bloomington. Youngstown State comes to the
Horseshoe this weekend in the Jim Tressel Bowl.
7. UTAH - The Utes, without injured quarterback Cam
Rising, took care of Florida 24-11 last Thursday night.
Confidence is high in Salt Lake City. Kyle Whittingham
is a top ten coach in the country. Utah has another tough one
Saturday, playing Baylor in Waco.
8. TENNESSEE - The Volunteers smoked Virginia
49-13 in the season opener in Nashville at the Titans
stadium. The Vols rushing attack was impressive with
287 yards and five touchdowns. Tennessee gets a tuneup with
Austin Peay before heading to the Swamp.
9. CLEMSON - The Tigers played at Duke Monday
night and kickoff came after this issue went to
press. Clemson will host Charleston Southern
Saturday.
10. TEXAS - The Longhorns handled Rice,
quarterbacked by JT Daniels, 37-10 in the opener. The
stage is set for the big showdown in Tuscaloosa. Texas
nearly pulled off the upset last year. Both teams are hungry for
that signature win.
11. OREGON STATE - The Beavers looked impressive
this past Sunday in a 42-17 win at San Jose State. They
play a physical style, which suits them well in a very
talented PAC-12. Oregon State hosts UC-Davis Saturday night.
12. LSU - The Bayou Bengals fell to Florida State 45-24
in Orlando. LSU lost the game in the first half, though
it led at intermission. Two empty red zone trips proved
fatal. Grambling makes the short trip to Tiger Stadium Saturday.
