A native of Rome, Georgia, Tate Ratledge is best-known for his mullet hairdo and mustache.
His sheer size, 6’6” and 320 pounds, alone, make him a big man on campus. His size does
not belie his excellent agility in that he was a punter for his Darlington teams in high school.
He once recovered a fumble and ran a long distance for a touchdown, confirming that
he can get where he needs to be in a hurry. In the offseason, he spent time in Dallas
FROM THE
EDITOR
VANCE LEAVY
EDITOR IN CHIEF
The Gator thrashing in Jax was a thing of beauty, but it’s now time to
get ready for a legit Missouri team who wants to pop No. 1 in the face!
ORS
FILL
Wowsers, that sure was fun … Georgia 43 Florida 20.
Where shall I begin with how our men in Red
and Black absolutely throttled the reptiles? It’s
sort of funny now, when thinking about how all
the pundits were predicting a close game. Remember, this was
a Georgia team that was considered good, but just weren’t as
lethal as the previous back-to-back champion Dawgs. I wonder
what Billy Napier and his battered Gator squad would have to
say about that when the game
was in the Bulldogs hands
before halftime?
I’m never one to boast too
much because I’m totally with
Coach Smart and his belief
that “humility is always a week
away.” However, I absolutely
loathe Florida, so to have a
Georgia-Florida game that
turned into a coronation
(much like the Natty in Los
Angeles) was oh, so sweet.
NO CUTLINE NEEDED :)
I will admit that I thought the 2023 Gators could hang with
our Bulldogs for a bit, but I was lockstep in my belief that Kirby’s
Dawgs would wear down Florida and eventually take control of
the game. However, after watching the DawgWalk Logo on Colorways Saturday in
Jacksonville, I shifted my thinking that a butt whipping may soon
commence. Led by Coach Smart and followed by every member
of the Georgia team, the faces on
THESE
the Georgia
CAN BE USED
football program
WITH 1 OR 2 COLORS
walking into the stadium were locked in beyond belief. It was an
absolute thing of beauty. Our coaching staff and their team were
there to make a statement. And, boy didn’t they … How ’Bout
Them Dawgs!!!
Next up … the Missouri Tigers, who (like the Gators) play our
Bulldogs with the opportunity to gain control of the SEC East
with a victory. However, unlike those wounded Reptiles, this
Missouri team has depth and leadership that everyone in the
Bulldog Nation must take seriously. Last year’s close call in
Columbia should be all the evidence needed to realize Mizzou is
legit. Thankfully, I know Kirby and Co. will be ready for Saturday’s
battle on Dooley Field in Sanford Stadium.
This issue of BI will definitely get you ready for the game.
The BI camera was out of control (this past week) snapping
photos everywhere with all the happenings of Georgia-Florida.
Processing 125 photos
between Saturday night and
Sunday lunchtime about did
me in, which is why you will
have to excuse me when
you realize this Editor’s Note
is soon to end. I’m sort of
kidding, but not really. Do
enjoy all the photos beginning
on page 28. The Georgia-
Florida experience is so epic
and our fans are what make
it so special. And mauling the
Gators is always a welcomed grand finale … Woof, Woof, Woof!
Be sure to check out our fun features in our Social section …
Georgia Girls – Angie Burch, (pages 26, 27), Proust Q&A – Morgan
Williams (page 48) and MIXTAPE – Keith Hill (page 47). Thanks to
everyone for participating.
This week is homecoming in Athens, so I encourage everyone
to get to town as early you can. The parade downtown on Friday
night is a lot of fun and it is always a blast to see the former
cheerleaders on the field doing their thing on game day. And as
I’ve already mentioned, the game on Saturday is absolutely huge.
Come on Dawgs. Keep the momentum rolling from your stellar
play in Jacksonville. You can certainly count on your fan base to
be early, proud and loud. Enjoy this issue of BI. See you in raucous
Sanford Stadium on Saturday. Go Dawgs!!
FROM THE
booth
JEFF DANTZLER
@jeffdantzlerTV
The Georgia team needs their Decibel Dawgs to be early, proud
and loud because this Missouri team is no doubt the real deal
In the final home game of the 2015
season, Georgia beat Georgia
Southern 23-17 in overtime. It was
Mark Richt’s final campaign as
the Bulldogs coach, and this Statesboro
native was so grateful that Georgia
didn’t lose to the Eagles. It would
have been mighty tough going home
to Statesboro with Georgia losing to
Georgia Southern in football.
In the first home game of the 2016
season, Georgia - a 50-point favorite -
edged Nicholls State 26-24. It was Kirby
Smart’s initial campaign as the Bulldogs
head coach. And that was a scary
Saturday. Later that season, there were
three heartbreaking losses Between
the Hedges. Cruelly inconceivable gut
punches that made for some long walks
up Baxter and Lumpkin hills.
There was the Hail Mary by Tennessee,
a game the Dogs led 17-0 in the first
half. Georgia, marred by a terrible special
teams performance, blew a fourth
quarter lead and lost to Vandy, as the
Commodores Zac Cunningham made
the big fourth down stop. Then there
was the 28-27 kick in the teeth to the
Yellow Jackets. The Bulldogs led that
game 27-14 in the fourth quarter and
had the ball at midfield.
After that loss to the enemy, Georgia’s
fate started to turn. Nick Chubb and
Sony Michel said on that bitter day that
they were not going out like that. They
announced that they were returning for
their senior seasons.
Georgia has lost just once at home
since.
You have to control your home
stadium, and starting with the 2017
launch of the Kirby Smart dynasty in his
second season at the helm, the Bulldogs
have been dominant on Dooley Field in
Sanford Stadium.
The only loss in Athens dating back to
2017 came to South Carolina in 2019
when the Bulldogs turned the ball
over four times and missed two field
goals, falling in overtime 20-17 to the
Gamecocks. Starting a week later in a
21-0 victory over Kentucky on a rainy
day and night in Athens, Smart’s Dogs
have won 23 consecutive games on their
home turf.
A huge part of that success has been a
rowdy and boisterous Sanford throng.
Make no mistake, Georgia’s 12th man
has played a huge hand in the Bulldogs
success Between the Hedges. The
players and team love each other and
thrive off one another.
That 12th man will have to be elite
once again for Georgia to beat the best
opponent the Bulldogs have played all
season, the Missouri Tigers.
You know the story on Mizzou. The
Tigers nearly pulled the upset against
reigning and eventual national
champion Georgia on a Saturday night
in Columbia a year ago. The Bulldogs
rallied for a 26-22 victory en route to a
second consecutive national title. For
the 15-0 Dogs of 2022, it was one of
two wins that came by single digits,
the other of course, the famed 42-41
Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl thriller over Ohio
State in the College Football Playoff
semifinal. This year’s edition of Mizzou
is shaping up as its best squad since the
2013 Tigers, who had an 11-1 regular
season (including a 41-26 win over
Georgia in Athens), and played in the
SEC Championship Game. Missouri made
a second consecutive trip to Atlanta
the following year. Since then, the
Tigers have been consistently good and
competitive. This team looks great.
Every defensive starter returned from
last year’s team and the Tigers have a
talented, explosive, multi-dimensional
offense. They can run it and throw it.
They sustain drives for scores, they score
on big plays. And they have a weapon
at kicker. Yep, Harrison Mevis is back.
His highlight this year is the 61-yard
game-winner to beat Kansas State and
top Kevin Butler’s SEC record set on
September 22, 1984 against Clemson.
These Tigers are good enough to make
it to the SEC Championship Game and
contend for a playoff berth. Everything
is in front of Mizzou on the schedule,
including home dates against Florida
and Tennessee following the trip to
Athens.
And oh yeah, Missouri was off this
past week, while the Bulldogs and
Gators were in the grips of their annual
Jacksonville showdown.
When thinking about the Bulldogs
incredible record Between the Hedges
under Smart’s watch, there are a handful
of games that come to mind where
the red and black throng made an
extraordinary impact. Think about all
the false starts for Notre Dame in 2019.
How about the Early, Loud, Intense,
Tough, Electric showing for the 37-0
nooner victory over Arkansas in a 2021
undefeated showdown? Amazing. Then
last year, No. 1 vs. No. 1, Georgia and
Tennessee, the jacked up Georgia crowd
helped get the Vols off balance en route
to a 27-13 victory that set the Dogs up
for a trip to Atlanta and the playoff.
From 1980-1983, the Bulldogs won 24
straight Between the Hedges, the streak
coming to an end in a No. 3 vs. No. 4
battle between Georgia and another set
of Tigers (Auburn). These Bulldogs of
2023 are one win away from equalling
that mark.
It will take a capital performance from
both Georgia’s outstanding football
team and “Decibel Dawgs” - the greatest
fans in the world - for the chapel bell to
ring once again. Georgia needs it badly
to stay in contention for everything.
So does Mizzou. That 12th man can
be the difference. Early, proud and
loud, Georgia badly needs the Sanford
Stadium crowd.
GEORGIA VS MIZZOU
BY: JEFF DANTZLER
It’s a critical Southeastern Conference showdown Saturday
afternoon Between the Hedges, as the winner of this
one takes a massive step towards Atlanta and the SEC
Championship Game.
Georgia comes in at 8-0, 5-0 in SEC play. Mizzou is 7-1, 3-1 in
the conference.
The Bulldogs are coming off a 43-20 victory over Florida in
Jacksonville. Quarterback Carson Beck, running back Daijun
Edwards and wide receiver Ladd McConkey spearheaded
a balanced and explosive Georgia attack. Kirby Smart’s
Dogs have won 41 of the last 42 - an all-time SEC best over
such a stretch - and ride a 25-game winning streak into the
showdown with the Tigers. Georgia has won 35 consecutive
regular season contests and 24 straight SEC regular season
games. The Bulldogs ride a 23 game home winning streak
into Saturday’s colossal clash, one off the school record set
from 1980-1983. During this incredible run, this will be one of
Georgia’s sternest tests.
Missouri had a well timed open date this past week, and the
Tigers are primed to pull off their first victory over Georgia
since beating the Bulldogs 41-26 in 2013. The Tigers lone loss
came in Columbia to LSU last month. In the two following
games, Missouri rallied from a 14-0 first half deficit and beat
Kentucky 38-21 in Lexington, and then rolled past South
Carolina 34-12 at home in CoMo.
The Tigers boast an explosive multi-dimensional offense.
The Tigers have a typically tough and physical offensive
line. Running back Cody Scharder is averaging 100-plus
yards per game on the ground and has rushed for nine
touchdowns. Brady Cook is having an All-SEC caliber season
at quarterback, with 15 touchdowns against three picks. He
set the conference record earlier this season for consecutive
passes without an interception, a total that reached 366
dating back to last year. His favorite target is All-American
candidate Luther Burden III, averaging over 100 yards
receiving per game.
Two weeks ago, Missouri had its best defensive game against
a league foe, beating South Carolina 34-12. The Tigers special
teams is strong, led by All-SEC kicker Harrison Mevis, who
was five-for-five on field goals against Georgia last year in the
Bulldogs 26-22 victory.
A tough schedule remains for both teams. Georgia hosts
Ole Miss then closes SEC play at Tennessee prior to the
annual in-state battle with the Yellow Jackets. The Tigers
host Tennessee and Florida these next two weeks and then
close at Arkansas. The loser of this game is by no means
eliminated from SEC East contention, but the winner takes a
big step towards Atlanta.
Georgia leads the all-time series 11-1, and has won 10 of the 11
meetings since Missouri joined the league in 2012. The Bulldogs
won the only previous meeting prior to Mizzou’s SEC entry,
topping the Tigers 14-0 in the Orange Bowl on January 1, 1960.
BULLDOGS TO WATCH
BY: CLAY WATKINS
CARSON BECK (QB #15) - Beck has firmly established himself as one of
the top quarterbacks in the SEC. The gunslinger is coming off a homecoming to
remember in his return to Jacksonville where the Bulldog quarterback threw for
315 yards and two touchdowns. Beck, as he has done throughout the season,
showed poise and confidence on third down, and emphatically answered the
question, “What will this offense do without Brock Bowers?” Bulldog fans should
remember the scare in Columbia, Missouri last year, and with an even stronger
Tiger team heading into Athens this week, Beck will need to have another strong
performance to continue the Bulldogs’ pursuit of perfection.
CARSON BECK
QUARTERBACK
DAIJUN EDWARDS (RB #30) - Edwards is coming off yet another
monster performance against the Florida Gators. The Colquitt County native has
been exceptional since returning from injury, carrying the ball 95 times for 556
yards and eight touchdowns. Edwards’ silky style of running and exceptional
lateral movement has kept the Bulldog offense in front of the sticks, and his
ability to gain positive yards on first down is critical for the Bulldog offense’s
rushing success. This Saturday, Edwards will need to continue to run the ball
effectively in the redzone to ensure the Bulldogs don’t leave points on the field
and maximize offensive possessions against a stout Missouri defense.
DOMINIC LOVETT (WR #6) - Lovett was an excellent edition from the
transfer portal after the receiver decided his time in Columbia, Missouri was
finished following the 2022 season. With this game being a personal one,
playing against his former team, Lovett will surely be expecting to have another
monster performance, proving his worth to the Bulldog faithful. Lovett is
coming off a strong performance against the Gators where he had four grabs
for 83 yards, bringing his tally to 365 yards total on the season which is second
on the team behind Brock Bowers. Lovett will be a monster part of Georgia’s
gameplan Saturday in Athens.
TYKEE SMITH (DB #23) - Smith has been flat out phenomenal for the
Bulldogs so far in 2023 and has taken over Georgia’s nickel-corner position, or
STAR, as they refer to it, beautifully. Smith is currently second on the team in
total tackles with 33, just four behind leading tackler, Smael Mondon Jr. While
Smith was known for his physical style of play early in his career at West Virginia,
his pass coverage has been most impressive for the Bulldog defense in 2023. No.
23 leads the Georgia defense in interceptions with four on the season. Missouri
has one of the top receiving units in the Country, and Smith will be a critical
component to stopping the Tiger’s aerial attack.
KAMARI LASSITER (DB #3) - Lassiter has fully asserted himself as a top
defensive back, not just in the SEC, but in college football. The corner has been
a blanket this season for the Bulldog defense and as a result is not often tested.
This week, Lassiter will face a Missouri offense whose greatest strength is their
dominant receiving unit. Because of this, there is no question Lassiter will have
to be at the top of his game and showcase his top-tier coverage ability.
JAMON DUMAS-JOHNSON (LB #10) - Mr. Reliable for the Georgia
defense showed out again, living in the Florida backfield this past Saturday.
Dumas-Johnson has been Georgia’s most effective player getting to the
quarterback this season, totaling three and a half sacks so far in 2023. Georgia
will need to pressure Brady Cook in order to slow down Missouri’s offense, and
Dumas-Johnson will be relied on heavily to disrupt the passer. Expect another
dominant outing from Georgia’s defensive quarterback this Saturday.
Before Missouri entered the Southeastern
Conference in 2012, the Bulldogs and Tigers had
met just once on the gridiron, with Georgia winning
the 1960 Orange Bowl 14-0 over Mizzou.
In the Bulldogs 49-14 victory over the Tigers in
Columbia in 2020, Georgia scored the final 35
points of the game. Zamir White ran for 126 yards
and Georgia Pickens had 126 receiving.
Georgia’s women’s soccer team, led by second
year head coach Keidane McAlpine, captured the
school’s first ever Southeastern Conference East
Division title this season.
TIGERS TO WATCH
BY: COBY SERINA
LUTHER BURDEN (WR #3) - After beating Florida, Kirby Smart said in his
postgame presser that Mizzou was “terrorizing defenses across our conference,”
and that “terrorizing” is in heavy credit to this young man right here. Luther
Burden III is second in the nation in receiving yards with 905 through eight
games this season, and whenever he has the ball in his hands, you best believe
he’s MOVIN’. He’s averaging 14.8 yards per catch, which is basically a first down
and a half per reception. There is no doubt that Burden will be a threat when the
Tigers come to Sanford.
LINEBACKER
BRADY COOK (QB #12) - He’s certainly underrated because Missouri
Football is a smaller brand than the University of Georgia, but Cook is the real
deal. His play is actually quite comparable to the Dawgs’ leading signal caller,
Carson Beck. Cook has 2,259 yards, 15 touchdowns, and three interceptions
on the year. For comparison, Beck has 2,462 yards, 14 touchdowns, and four
interceptions. These guys aren’t too far apart, which should tell you that Cook
could present the Georgia defense with his own set of problems. Keep an eye
out for when Cook throws it to Burden. Those two have an elite connection.
CODY SCHRADER (RB #7) - You can’t have a good football team without
physicality, and that’s exactly what this senior running back, Cody Schrader,
embodies for this Mizzou team. Standing at a short and stout five-foot-nine
and weighing in at 214 pounds, it’s Schrader’s low center of gravity that has been
helping him shake off defenders and push through, gaining 807 yards this year
and averaging 5.8 yards per carry. He’s a consistent option for this Tigers’ offense,
and because of that, he’ll have a decent shot at testing the Dawgs’ defensive front.
KRIS ABRAMS-DRAINE (DB #7) - Abrams-Draine is a certified ball hawk.
There’s something in him that just draws him to the ball when it’s in the air, and
once he’s there, he knows how to make a play. He’s averaging about one or two
pass deflections a game, and that’s a story Georgia knows all too well. In last
year’s almost-upset versus Mizzou, Abrams-Draine put on a strong performance,
swatting the ball away two different times to break up passes. Now a senior
leading his ranked team into Sanford, he’ll definitely be itching to finish the job
this year.
TY’RON HOPPER (LB #8) - Talk about unfinished business—senior
linebacker Ty’Ron Hopper should definitely be excited for another chance to
take down the top dog. Last year, he did just about everything he could, getting
seven tackles and forcing a forced fumble to try and bring it home for his Tigers.
And with the way Hopper and his team have been playing to this point, there
shouldn’t be much to stop them from the dog fight that’s to come next Saturday.
As the team’s leading tackler with 43 and averaging about five per game, you
should see this guy flying up and down the field when Mizzou is on defense.
DARIUS ROBINSON (DL #6) - Smart said these guys are “big” and
“physical,” and that about sums up fifth-year defensive lineman Darius Robinson,
standing at a mighty 6-5 and weighing in at a hefty 300 pounds. The scary thing
is he doesn’t let any of that size go to waste. Robinson has four and a half sacks
this season, has forced a fumble, and boasts a whopping 28 tackles from the
defensive line position. Robinson definitely knows how to get to the ball, and
with a banged-up Georgia offensive line, he may just have a decent chance of
doing that when the Tigers suit up to play the Dawgs this coming weekend.
THE
FIVE
Georgia vs. mizzou
BY: JEFF DANTZLER
1. Luther Burden III - Missouri is very tough, strong and physical up
front. They always are, and that’s a big reason they have matched up well with
Georgia. Tough on the line of scrimmage. Well, this team is also getting excellent
quarterback play from Brady Cook, the Tigers have an outstanding running game
led by Cody Schrader, who’s averaging over 100 yards per contest, and one of
the best groups of pass catchers in the Southeastern Conference. The headliner
is Luther Burden III. A five-star recruit, Mizzou beat out some serious college
football heavyweights to get the St. Louis native to play for his home state Tigers.
That includes Georgia. The Bulldogs, like Alabama and Ohio State badly wanted
Burden. The five star recruit is a five star player who must be accounted for at all
times. Through eight games, he has 61 catches for 905 yards and six touchdowns.
The Tigers will come up with creative ways to get him the football. Georgia must
be aware of where Burden is at all times. A likely top ten pick in the Spring of 2025,
Burden is a difference maker.
2. Mevis - Harrison Mevis is a weapon. Georgia fans saw that first hand last
season in CoMo when “The Thicker Kicker” was a perfect 5-for-5 on field goals in
Georgia’s 26-22 come-from-behind victory. He shared SEC Special Teams Player of
the Week honors with the Bulldogs Jack Podlesny, who was 4-for-4. Mevis went
next level in September with a 61-yard field goal at the buzzer to beat Kansas
State. That boot broke Kevin Butler’s SEC record set against Clemson on the
60-yarder that proved to be the difference against those Tigers in 1984. KB says
they should have an ad campaign called Mevis and Butthead. I’m all for it.
3. Tight battles - Since Mizzou came into the league in 2012, Georgia has lost
just once to the Tigers. That was ten years ago in Athens, when Mizzou defeated
the Dogs 41-26 en route to an 11-1 regular season and the SEC Championship
Game. There have been a lot of close games between these two - see 28-27 in
2016 and 26-22 last year - and even when the Bulldogs have pulled away, Missouri
has put up a helluva fight. Well this team has the talent and firepower to go
toe-to-toe with any team in the country. Georgia had better be at its best and not
badly lose the turnover battle. The Dogs are coming off the emotional showdown
with the Gators in Jacksonville. Mizzou was off. The Tigers are hungry, and sniffing
another win in Athens.
4. 1960 Orange Bowl - Prior to the Tigers joining the SEC, Georgia and
Missouri had met just once before, in the 1960 Orange Bowl. The Bulldogs won
14-0 in Miami to cap the 1959 SEC Championship campaign with a 10-1 record
and No. 5 national ranking. The game was televised and marked the first time
Georgia had ever been on TV. January 1, 1960, quite a historic day in the annals of
Georgia Bulldogs football.
5. Shakepeare’s Pizza - Yes the game is in Athens, but we have to give a nod
to the most famous eatery in Columbia. Bulldog fans discovered it on that first
road trip to Columbia back in 2012. When I’m there with my esteemed cohorts
like Tray Littlefield, Chris Lakos and David Johnston, it’s a must stop. The famous
Road Dawg Adam Gillespie is also a fan. On the Bulldogs first trip out there, it was
quickly noticed that Georgia fans were using the names of some famous Bulldogs
from the 1980s to place their order. For instance, “we got a sausage and cheese for
Tron Jackson, a double pepperoni for Knox Culpepper, we got a meat lovers for
Rambo Brantley.” Good stuff.
Limited Time Only
Georgia has an entire
Rolodex of words, phrases,
and other vernacular that
they use to inspire and
direct their players. It’s a collection of
things; not all of them make sense
initially. You’ll hear things that sound
obscure to most, but they make
sense to the Dawgs. Sayings like ‘eat
off the floor,’ ‘one moment at a time,’
and the latest one—specifically
tailored for this year’s Georgia-Florida
game—’Mission. Team. Me.’
In addition to the sayings or phrases,
there are also key words they like to
constantly reiterate and emphasize:
composure, resiliency, physicality,
etc. And those ones make more
sense, but it was that last one that
made all the difference in this past
weekend’s bout against the Florida
Gators. It was all about physicality.
Coach Smart alluded to this
physicality in his postgame presser
after beating Florida, talking about
the trenches—the most physical
place in football, ‘We were able to
control the line of scrimmage, which
ultimately makes the difference in
this conference.” He wholeheartedly
believes that if you can control the
line of scrimmage, you have the
upper hand, and that’s what we saw
happen on the field on both the
offensive and defensive sides of the
ball.
When the offense had the ball in
their hands, it reminded me of the
Kentucky game. The O-line and
Carson Beck definitely benefited
from having a healthy Xavier Truss
back in rotation, allowing no sacks
and enabling Beck to throw for over
300 yards, similar to what he did
versus Kentucky, a game in which
the Bulldog offensive line did not
allow a sack. The rushing totals were
almost identical to Kentucky: against
the Wildcats, Georgia ran for 173, and
Florida 171.
What really took the cake was the
performance from the Georgia
defensive front. If it weren’t for
a garbage-time fourth quarter
run against what may have been
Georgia’s second-string defense,
the Gators would have been held to
just 61 rushing yards on the day. But
it wasn’t just the run defense that
showed up. Above all, the pass rush
was the key difference.
The Dawgs’ ability to affect the
quarterback was a true exhibition
of physicality. The four sacks and
two forced fumbles were just
one piece of the pie. The Georgia
defense asserted its dominance last
weekend for the first time in what
feels like forever. It almost brought
back memories of the 2021 Georgia
defense, and if it weren’t for some
poor fourth-quarter play from the
second string, Florida could have
been held to just seven points.
Georgia’s defense, the D-line
especially, looked different, and
that’s because, according to
Coach Smart, it was. Smart said
the defensive coaching staff
implemented a ‘new wrinkle’ this
week that helped to pressure the
quarterback. One-fourth of all
the quarterback sacks this season
happened against Florida; the count
is now up to 16.
In the past, Coach Smart has said
that the defense prioritizes creating
and planning pressure for opposing
quarterbacks rather than just
allowing his guys to pin their ears
back and win one-on-one. Now I’m
no coach, so I can’t tell you exactly
what they did versus Florida, but I
can definitely tell you that whatever
it was, it worked.
One thing I’ve come to learn about
this team is that they play their best
when the lights are the brightest. In
marquee matchups versus Kentucky
and Florida and even in the fourth
quarter of the Auburn game, the
Dawgs showed up. Hopefully, we
continue to see this type of overall
performance from the team moving
forward, especially as the ranked
Missouri Tigers come to town to take
their shot at the No. 1 team in the
country this weekend.
BY JEFF DANTZLER
A VIEW FROM ...
Columbia
MIZZOU IS HAVING A
GREAT SEASON, CAN
YOU TALK ABOUT THE
EXCITEMENT LEVEL
AROUND THE PROGRAM?
It’s the highest it’s been since 2014
when the Tigers won their second
straight SEC East title. Missouri has
only had three seasons in which it
has been better than 7-1 through
eight games in school history. Pair
that with a recruiting class that is
likely to have two five-stars for the
first time in school history and it
feels like everything is on the right
track for Mizzou for the first time
in a while.
A TYPICALLY TOUGH
TIGER TEAM HAS A LOT
OF GREAT PIECES, WHAT
ARE SOME THINGS THAT
STAND OUT TO YOU?
Brady Cook has gone from a guy
most wanted replaced to a likely
second-team all-SEC quarterback.
Cody Schrader is leading the SEC
in rushing and Luther Burden
is second in receiving. There’s a
perception that the defense is
down, but it’s actually allowing
fewer points per game and yards
per play than it did last year when
everyone was ecstatic about the
job Blake Baker did. Mizzou is
sixth in the country in sacks and
has turned it up a notch in the last
two games against South Carolina
and Kentucky. The offensive line is
vastly improved from a year ago. I
don’t know if Missouri is one of the
best teams in the country in any
one specific area, but there really
aren’t many, if any, glaring holes.
HOW POPULAR IS ELI
DRINKWITZ WITH THE
MIZZOU FANBASE?
Right now? He could run for
mayor and he’d win in a landslide
unless his opponent was Desiree
Reed-Francois or Dennis Gates.
CAN YOU TALK ABOUT
THE IMPACT OF LUTHER
BURDEN?
Huge. When Dominic Lovett
transferred to Georgia, Missouri
fans weren’t sure they could replace
him. Burden had all world potential,
but he had 375 yards receiving as
a freshman. He’s already got more
catches, yards and touchdowns
than Lovett had last year and he has
five games left to play.
WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON
GEORGIA?
If you have their interest, they’re
the best team in the country. I’m
not sure they’re as good as the
last two versions have been, but
they’re capable of being very, very
good. As a Kansas City Chiefs fan, I
think some of the same things are
happening with the two teams.
Most regular season games just
don’t get their juices flowing.
They know they can play a B or a
C game and win most weeks and
put themselves in position for the
playoffs. Then when the playoffs
start, you need the A effort. It’s
a dangerous game in college
football where one loss can have
much more of an impact on your
ability to get to the playoffs, but
honestly, it hasn’t come particularly
close to burning Georgia yet. I
think their A game beats anyone in
college football. It’s just a matter of
when they want to play it.
WHAT DOES MISSOURI
NEED TO DO TO WIN IN
ATHENS?
Play their best game of the
season and have Georgia be off.
Maybe not significantly. I don’t
think Missouri should be afraid
of anybody. If you’re 7-1 and in
the top 15 in the country, you’re
a good team. But if Georgia plays
an A game, like I said above,
Georgia’s going to win. If Missouri
plays a C game, Georgia’s going
to win. The Tigers need to wreak
havoc on defense and find a way
to win the turnover battle, maybe
by at least a couple. They need to
avoid self-inflicted wounds like
penalties. The goal should simply
be to get to the fourth quarter
with a chance and then hope you
make one more play than Georgia
does.
HOW WOULD YOU
LIKE TO SEE THE SEC
SCHEDULE SET UP FOR
2025 AND BEYOND.
I want nine games first of all.
Fewer weeks where nobody
cares on the schedule is good
for everyone except the coaches
and their bonuses. If we’re going
with three permanent rivals, I’d
like to see Mizzou get Oklahoma,
Kentucky and Arkansas (and I
actually don’t feel all that strongly
about Arkansas and wouldn’t
have a problem if South Carolina
or someone else replaced them).
Personally I’d kind of like to see
four pods and the champion of
each pod plays in conference
semifinals and then finals, but that
seems pretty unlikely.
PROUST
COMPILED BY: CAROLINE CHAMPION
FAMILY: Kristin Warnell Williams (B.S.F.C.S. 1997), Kahrs (14)
and Charles (10)
CURRENT TOWN: Charleston, South Carolina
WHAT YEARS AT UGA: 1994-1999
SCHOOL/DEGREE: Franklin College of Arts & Sciences, A.B.
Economics
MORGAN WILLIAMS
PROFESSION: CPA
ACCOLADES: Pretty good wing-shooter, average fly
fisherman, poor golfer.
WHAT LIFE LESSONS DID YOU LEARN WHILE AT
UGA?
Tipping well pays dividends. I took my wife (then girlfriend)
to dinner at Bissett’s for her 21st birthday and inadvertently
left an obscene tip. I was a sophomore at the time and let’s
just say I never again waited in line or had trouble getting a
dinner reservation on home game weekends or any weekend
for that matter. I sure do miss that place and all our friends that
congregated there.
‌WHAT PROFESSOR DID YOU MOST ADMIRE?
I can’t remember specifically, but it was one of my economics
professors. One summer (why leave Athens for the summer?),
there was a fire in Brooks Hall and the top floor went up in
flames. On the day of the final, we walked in, and our professor
informed us that his computer and files had burned up so he
had written a new exam which rendered the old test files at
my fraternity house useless. To everyone’s surprise, there was
only one question: What grade do you think you deserve in
this class?
‌WHICH HISTORICAL FIGURE DO YOU MOST
IDENTIFY WITH?
George Washington, the modern Cincinnatus. By resigning
his commission back to the Continental Congress in order to
return to life as a farmer, Washington demonstrated the true
character of a citizen soldier.
WHO ARE YOUR HEROES IN REAL LIFE?
My late father, Pomeroy Williams, and my father-in-law, Fred
Warnell. Their incredible work ethic coupled with their love for
family and faith in God keep me working in the right direction.
‌QUOTE TO LIVE BY:
All I can say is that I have taken more out of alcohol than
alcohol has taken out of me – Sir Winston Churchill
‌WHAT IS YOUR IDEA OF PERFECT HAPPINESS?
Boat days with my family. Whether we are crabbing, tubing, or
sitting on the beach with a cold beverage, the salt water in the
Low Country seems to make all your worries fade away.
‌WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR GREATEST
ACHIEVEMENT?
My daughter Kahrs and my son Charles. They are my
“invaluable loan,” the joys of my life.
WHAT IS YOUR MOST MARKED CHARACTERISTIC?
I am fiercely loyal. I am always willing to help in any capacity,
whether it be lending a hand or an ear. I’m a very good listener
although my wife may beg to differ.
‌WHAT DO YOU MOST VALUE IN YOUR FRIENDS?
Honesty.
‌IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT
YOURSELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Time management. I am a professional procrastinator.
‌WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE WRITERS?
Oliver Yorke of Fraser’s Magazine fame. There are a lot of pearls
of wisdom in those volumes.
FROM THE
field
BY GREG POOLE
GEORGIA - 43, FLORIDA - 20
Georgia fans have worried about their team all season, and
the Cocktail Party was no exception. Of course, the team
is responsible for most of the fan discomfort with several
lackluster performances in 2023. Thankfully, Georgia’s team
leadership exerted control and delivered a fired-up pack of
Dawgs to Jacksonville.
Maybe the Gators’ opening drive was the motivator that
grabbed Georgia’s attention, or the fire was there all along.
In either case, the Dawgs were unfazed by Florida’s opening
salvo and proceeded to deliver a beat down that will be
relived for years by the Bulldog faithful (Larry Munson would
have fun with this one). The game was not as close as the
score may appear to casual fans across the country, but in the
context of the series, it was a classic Georgia win.
There are many players one may cite when analyzing the
win, but to understand the victory, just look at the line play
on both sides of the ball on the replay. Daijun Edwards and
the other backs and receivers will, rightly, get the coverage on
Sports Center, but fans in the know will get that offenses only
work when the five guys up front (and their reserves) carve
out lanes for those backs. At times, there were creases for the
back to wiggle through, but often, those lanes allowed backs to
break into the secondary. The Gators got swamped.
The critical question now is, was Georgia’s performance
about getting ready for a hated rival or getting mentally
prepared for the stretch run? We can answer that question
when Missouri invades Athens next Saturday, but the
performance in Jacksonville should answer any questions
about the ability of this football team. Many fans and pundits
have concluded that the 2023 edition is less talented than
the two previous teams, but such speculation is meaningless.
Speculative talent or team evaluations do not matter; wins,
losses and championships make the record books, not
presumptions.
On Saturday, Georgia will be back in the friendly confines of
Sanford Stadium to face the undefeated Missouri Tigers for the
SEC East lead. Then Ole Miss before Tennessee and Tech will
challenge Georgia. A few weeks ago, this stretch seemed like a
murder’s row. Now that we have a glimpse of how this edition of
the Bulldogs reacts to a severe challenge from a traditional rival,
I like the Dawgs to defend their SEC East title and move on to
the SEC Championship - and beyond.
STATS THAT
MATTER
GEORGIA - 43, FLORIDA - 20
BY: COBY SERINA
A look back at what decided the game between Georgia and Florida.
135
The question all week was who would step up in Brock Bowers absence.
Even though Bowers made the trip to Jacksonville as one of the 74 players
who traveled with the team, he would not be able to be the safety net
for Carson Beck if things got hairy against Georgia’s most-hated rival.
Well, Ladd McConkey’s 135 receiving yards was a welcomed substitute
for Bower’s usual production. McConkey has been dynamic in his limited
appearances this year as he battles back from a chronic back issue that
has seriously limited
36
his playing time. What is most remarkable is that
McConkey, who has been limited in practice for months, looked to be the
best receiver on the field for either team. Practice, reps, and conditioning
aside, the guy is just that good. Gary Danielson even commented during
the telecast that McConkey is essentially uncoverable one on one. A
healthy McConkey, means a dynamic offense. Let’s hope the receiver’s back
holds up for the rest of this difficult stretch of games to end the season.
6.4
Daijun Edwards averaged a cool 6.4 yards a carry on just 15 rushes while
totaling 96 yards on the ground. Edwards is without a doubt the most
underrated back in the SEC. Edwards is shifty, powerful and never misses
a hole. He has a dog mentality that welcomes contact, pushes the pile
and wants the ball. The South Georgia native is one of the true MVPs
of the team and goes about his business with a quiet, work-first, teamfirst
attitude. Edwards is the embodiment of what Kirby Smart wants
in a football player. Someone who speaks with his pads, not his mouth.
Edwards has become Georgia’s feature back and rightfully so. Expect
Edwards to be leaned on heavily in the coming weeks.
36
Georgia scored 36 unanswered points after Florida opened the scoring
with an impressive touchdown drive. Georgia has not started fast in its
games this season, often falling behind to inferior teams. That happened
again on Saturday as Florida came out throwing with some success to
some very talented wideouts. The difference between this game and
games against South Carolina and Auburn was that Georgia decided to
step on the gas early and knock the Gators out before the start of the
fourth quarter. The loss, and the manner of the losing, did not escape
Florida coach Billy Napier. “Ultimately, you have to go through tough
times, you have to make mistakes along the way. And we did that today,”
Napier reflected after the loss. Georgia fans hope those tough times
continue for the Gators, whose schedule doesn’t get much easier with
LSU and FSU on the slate.
7
Georgia racked up seven tackles for loss in the first half alone against the
Gators. None was bigger than Smael Mondon’s stop of Trevor Etienne’s
ill-fated fourth down trick play-attempt. With the Gators trailing 10-7
and facing a fourth-and-one on its own 34-yard line, Florida decided
to get cute with a direct snap to Etienne. After a bad snap, the talented
running back attempted to pass the ball, but
135
his receivers were covered
as Mondon blew the play up for a three-yard loss. Billy Napier is known
as a deep thinker, and that play was certainly a victim of overthinking
what should have been a simple decision to punt the ball.
315
Carson Beck eclipsed the 300-yard mark yet again. The signal caller is
playing some of the best football in the country at the quarterback
position and continues to amass 300-yard passing games with ease.
There is no doubt that Beck has a talented group of receivers, but
rolling into Jacksonville without Brock Bowers (his leading receiver) was
thought by many to be an issue. It wasn’t, and Beck is even starting to
sneak into some Heisman talk.
KEVIN BUTLER’S
PLAYERS OF THE GAME
COMPILED BY JEFF DANTZLER
OFFENSIVE PLAYER
Tate Ratledge - The redshirt sophomore from Rome,
Georgia standing 6-6, 320-pound led an offensive line
during a “fat moving” exercise Saturday against the Florida
Gators. Tate has the right attitude to prepare for what he had
to face Saturday in Jacksonville. Florida boasts two of the
fattest defensive lineman in all of college football, and even
though they couldn’t wear a Georgia jersey they are tough
when they fall down. Tate let an offensive line that protected
Carson Beck as well as clearing the lanes for 171 yards
rushing. At the end of the game, it was great to see Tate and
his mullet in the crowd with the Georgia faithful. Keep that
attitude Tate, our opponents are only getting bigger.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER
Tykee Smith- The Bulldogs have a very special defensive
back from Philadelphia in Tykee Smith. The senior defensive
back had a terrific game against the Gators. Six tackles with
four solos and one tackles for loss of two yards, as well as
one break up clearly makes Tykee an easy pick for player
of the game on defense. The senior DB is a leader in a very
talented secondary. Tykee’s play will be a key factor along
with his other DBs in the success of Georgia the rest of the season.
Missouri, Ole Miss and Tennessee pose a huge threat to the Bulldogs
through the air. Tykee and the rest of the secondary must play at a
high-level in order to win and three-peat. We need his leadership and
his incredible play as he can save the day.
SPECIAL TEAM PLAYER
Brett Thorson - The Thunder from Down Under, the awesome
Australian what other great names do we have for Bret Thorson besides
Thunderstick. Brett was a special teams player of the week this week
with three punts inside the 20-yard line that flipped the field back on
the Gators. In a season where Thorson has not been used as much,
he came through like an experienced veteran Saturday. As we start
our final three SEC games with Missouri, Ole Miss and Tennessee.
Thorson will be an important part of where our defense can start and
how aggressive they can become. Brett is a valuable part of this team,
even though he doesn’t get as much use. But Kirby likes them on the
sidelines, that means the O is doing good.
UNSUNG DAWG OF THE WEEK
Our unsung hero for this week is a bevy of young players that popped
in the game and made their mark and their first Gator game appearance.
Joenel Aguero had a blocked punt, which is the biggest factor of the
freshman. Sophomore Jalon Walker on Defense created a turnover
opportunity with a powerful rush off the offensive right side. Freshman
linebacker CJ Allen also had a big game. If we throw in Peyton Woodring
and his consistent kicking, we’ve got quite a freshman class. I like that
they go unnoticed because we need unsung heroes from here on out.
TOP 12
JD’S
BY: JEFF DANTZLER
We head into the final month of the regular season - it flies by
every year - and the first official playoff rankings have been
released. The stunner this past week was Oklahoma’s upset loss
to Kansas. The SEC, Big Ten, ACC and PAC-12 all have at least
one overall unbeaten, amongst the Power Five conferences. The
SEC has an enormous day coming up, highlighted by Missouri at
Georgia, LSU at Alabama and Texas A&M visiting Ole MIss.
1. GEORGIA - The two-time reigning national
champions were sharp against the Gators, posting a 43-
20 triumph in Jacksonville. The Bulldogs have won 41 of
42, and face their stiffest test of the season Saturday at home with
Mizzou, which was off last week.
2. FLORIDA STATE - The Seminoles are the class of
the ACC and they have an impressive list of wins. Florida
State went to Winston-Salem and downed Wake Forest
41-16 this past week. FSU heads to struggling Pitt, which got
destroyed last Saturday at Notre Dame.
3. OHIO STATE - The Buckeyes took care of business
at Wisconsin 24-10 this past week, moving to 8-0.
Ohio State’s defense is strong. The Buckeyes now go to
Rutgers for an early kickoff. An unscathed path to the Saturday
after Thanksgiving looks very doable.
4. MICHIGAN - The off the field headlines swirl, while
the Wolverines sit at a perfect 8-0. Michigan was off this
past week. Purdue heads to the Big House Saturday. The
Wolverines are aiming for a third straight Big Ten title and Playoff berth.
5. WASHINGTON - Since the victory over
Oregon, the Huskies have survived a couple of scares
against two of the teams at the bottom of the PAC-12.
Washington beat Stanford 42-33 last week. It’s off to USC Saturday
and the start of a brutal November slate.
6. MISSOURI - The Tigers are eyeing a big win in
Athens over the two-time defending national champion
Bulldogs. Missouri was off this past week gearing up for
Georgia. With a win, the Tigers would be in the SEC East driver’s seat.
7. OREGON - The Ducks had one of the best weeks
of any team, taking down always tough Utah 35-6 to
improve to 7-1. Oregon hosts Cal, which lost a 50-49
shootout to USC, Saturday. Dan Lanning’s Ducks are very much in
play to get to the PAC-12 title game.
8. OKLAHOMA - The Sooners have to be ranked
ahead of Texas, because they have the same record and
OU beat the Horns. A 38-33 loss at Kansas was a tough
pill to swallow. Oklahoma has another tough test coming up
Saturday, going to Oklahoma State.
9. TEXAS - The Longhorns, with quarterback Quinn
Ewers out due to injury, put up big numbers in a 35-6 win
over BYU. This week, it’s Kansas State in Austin. The Wildcats
are talented and capable of putting up big points. Texas is in the hunt.
10. ALABAMA - The Crimson Tide were off this past
Saturday to get ready for the big showdown in T-Town with
LSU. Of course, the Fightin’ Tigers were also off. If Bama wins,
the Tide is in great shape for a return to the SEC Championship Game.
11. OLE MISS - The Rebels took care of Vanderbilt
33-7 this past Saturday to make it 7-1. The lone loss
is to Alabama. Ole Miss has a big test with Texas A&M
Saturday. A win, and some help from LSU, and the
Rebels are still in the mix for everything.
12. AIR FORCE - The flying Falcons won - what we
think - is the first major college snow game of the year,
beating Colorado State 30-13. Air Force is 8-0. The
Falcons have beaten Navy. They play Army in Denver
Saturday for the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy.
