What is dance? This book describes the history<br />

of dance as a journey through time and<br />

space from early advanced civilizations to the<br />

21st century.<br />

choreographic competitions and teaches<br />

dance and dance history.<br />

She published at <strong>Henschel</strong> "Egon Madsen, A<br />

Life of Dance" (Egon Madsen - Ein Tanzleben,<br />

2012) and "Ivan Liška - The Lightness of the<br />

Moment" (Ivan Liška - Die Leichtigkeit des<br />

Augenblicks, 2015).<br />

Eleven richly illustrated chapters create a<br />

global panorama and tell short and long stories<br />

about dance. We learn about the first<br />

fertility dances, Greek war dancers, medieval<br />

'dancing mania', the Sun King's obsession<br />

with ballet, the Indian Kathak, 'Swan Lake',<br />

modern dance, hip hop, and contemporary<br />

hybrid forms.<br />

Dagmar Ellen Fischer sheds light on dance,<br />

offering an overview of the genre's key developments<br />

and introducing prominent artists.<br />

THE AUTHOR<br />

Dagmar Ellen Fischer, born in Toronto, Canada,<br />

trained as a dancer (working together<br />

with Karl Heinz Taubert, Susan Alexander,<br />

Clay Tagliaferro, Ernestine Stodelle, Anne<br />

Marie Porras, and Dick O'Swanborn) and<br />

dance pedagogy before studying philosophy<br />

in Hamburg. Since 2000, she has worked as a<br />

dance and theatre critic, editor, translator<br />

and cultural journalist for daily newspapers,<br />

German and international journals, including,<br />

among others, the Japanese dance magazine<br />

Shinshokan, Ballett intern, Kultur Report, and<br />

dance for you. She is a juror at international<br />
