1114 Flemish School S. XVII.
“Crowning with Thorns.”
Mercury gilded bronze plate in relief with fine chiseling. The
scene reflects the passage from Matthew 27, 27-29: “Then the
soldiers of the procurator took Jesus with them to the
praetorium and gathered the entire cohort around him. They
stripped him naked and threw a purple cloak over him and,
plaiting a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and in his
right hand a reed and they bowed their knees in front of him.
They mocked him saying: “Hail, King of the Jews.”
This scene can be related to an engraving by Maarten de Vos
engraved by Jan Collaert (Antwerp 1561-1620) and Adriaen
Collaert (c. 1520-1618). In both examples, the central scene is
organized with Christ seated surrounded by four characters
who place the crown of thorns on his head. One of them is
wearing a hat with a feather from the 17th century, another a
cap also more typical of that time than the time of Christ and
one of the men is on his knees. In the engraving there are two
characters to the left of the scene, one of them with an oriental
style turban and who also appears on the plate, where unlike
the engraving there are two groups of characters on both sides
of the central scene in different attitudes and postures, which
gives it great dynamism. In the background an architecture
with engraved and slightly insinuated semicircular arches.
Measurements: 17 x 21.5 cm.
“St. John”.
Carved, polychrome, gilded and stewed wooden sculpture.
Both in the robust proportions of the figure, as well as in the treatment of the folds and in
that forced posture, it is very reminiscent of the work of Juan de Anchieta. It is very
possible that it was part of a Calvary due to the posture of the saint, who with one hand on
his chest, looks upward.
