A Message from the President<br />

Welcome to the first production of our 51st<br />

season of providing quality professional<br />

opera in this region. What a joy to kick off<br />

the season with one of the greatest operas<br />

ever written, <strong>The</strong> <strong>Magic</strong> <strong>Flute</strong>. If you were<br />

able to join us at either of our Insight Series<br />

lectures, you probably left a little bit smarter<br />

than when you arrived—at least with regard<br />

to this production. This classic is so well<br />

known, and much performed, that it would<br />

be easy to think we know all about it. Yet,<br />

Artistic Director and Maestro, Craig Kier, never ceases to enthrall with<br />

historical context, character introductions, and explications of musical<br />

nuances that might otherwise be missed. <strong>The</strong> second lecture by Chris<br />

Ruli, a Masonic historian, delved into the composer’s connection to<br />

Freemasonry, examining its history, Mozart’s own experiences with the<br />

fraternity in Europe, and the Masonic symbols and elements found in<br />

this work. All of this background enhances our experience when we<br />

are transported in time to this classic story and its search for truth<br />

and reason, love and enlightenment. As we join Prince Tamino and<br />

Papageno on their quest to rescue Pamina, we get to explore our own<br />

challenges and tribulations as we pursue a deeper understanding of<br />

true love and happiness. Let’s explore and celebrate once more.<br />

A Message from the Maestro<br />

Welcome to the start of <strong>Annapolis</strong> <strong>Opera</strong>’s<br />

51st Season! After a thrilling 50th Anniversary<br />

Season, I can think of no better way to<br />

commence this year than with this beautiful<br />

new production of Mozart’s <strong>The</strong> <strong>Magic</strong> <strong>Flute</strong>.<br />

Premiered in 1791 just two months before<br />

Mozart’s death, the composer conducted<br />

the opening alongside his librettist, Emanuel<br />

Schikaneder, who also debuted the role<br />

of Papageno. One of Mozart’s most wellknown<br />

operas, the story is told in vivid detail<br />

with a specific musical language for each<br />

character. Mozart was, once again, ahead of<br />

his time, using the orchestra as an increasingly more important part of<br />

the drama and finding every opportunity to stretch the bounds of the<br />

classical period’s musical language.<br />

This new production, directed by Corinne Hayes and designed by<br />

Christopher Brusberg and Peter Leibold, engages a team of artists who<br />

bring to life the visual wonder of this magnificent work. In addition to<br />

singers familiar to <strong>Annapolis</strong> <strong>Opera</strong> audiences, we also have several<br />

notable debuts, all of which speak to our desire to continue to connect<br />

our audience to the full breadth of today’s artists.<br />

What an honor and joy it is to lead this fine cast in our new production<br />

of <strong>The</strong> <strong>Magic</strong> <strong>Flute</strong>. I hope you enjoy the performance—we’ve surely<br />

enjoyed creating this production and have done all we can to bring<br />

Mozart’s masterful score to life for you!<br />

Synopsis<br />

ACT I—Alone in a foreign land, Prince Tamino is attacked by a giant serpent.<br />

He faints but, when he comes to, realizes that he has been rescued—someone<br />

else has killed the monster. Papageno, the Queen of the Night’s bird-catcher,<br />

is quick to claim the credit but is soon corrected by the Queen’s Three Ladies.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y give Tamino a portrait of Pamina, the queen’s daughter, who has been<br />

abducted by the tyrant Sarastro. Tamino falls instantly in love. <strong>The</strong> Queen<br />

herself appears and promises the Prince her daughter’s hand if he can rescue<br />

her. To help him on his quest, the Ladies give him a magic flute and three<br />

magical spirits to guide him. He sets off, joined by a reluctant Papageno.<br />

Imprisoned in Sarastro’s temple, Pamina is at the mercy of the lecherous<br />

Monostatos. But his plans are interrupted by Papageno, who tells Pamina of<br />

Tamino’s love and his quest to rescue her. Arriving at the temple, Tamino is<br />

greeted by a priest, who tells him that he has been deceived by the Queen<br />

of the Night; all is not as she described. Papageno and Pamina have escaped<br />

but are pursued by Monostatos. Papageno uses his magic bells to enchant<br />

their pursuers, but just as they are once again free, they hear Sarastro and his<br />

followers approaching. Pamina tells Sarastro the truth of what happened, but<br />

Sarastro still refuses to release her. Tamino enters, captured by a triumphant<br />

Monostatos. He and Pamina meet briefly for the first time; Monostatos is<br />

punished. Tamino and Pamina are separated in order to prepare for the trials.<br />

ACT II—Sarastro persuades the priests to accept Tamino and Papageno as<br />

members if they pass the order’s tests of initiation. Tamino and Papageno<br />

face the first trial: silence. Papageno fails almost immediately, but Tamino<br />

holds firm. <strong>The</strong> Queen of the Night, still seeking revenge, orders Pamina to<br />

kill Sarastro. Monostatos overhears and threatens to expose the plot unless<br />

Pamina surrenders to his desires. But Sarastro discovers his scheme, banishes<br />

Monostatos and forgives Pamina. Papageno and Tamino are still sworn to<br />

silence. Papageno once again fails by talking to an old woman. Tamino plays<br />

his magic flute, which calls Pamina to him. She speaks but he cannot reply,<br />

forcing her to believe that he no longer loves her. Papageno expresses his<br />

wish for a wife of his own and is rewarded by the return of the old lady. But the<br />

instant he reluctantly agrees to marry her she is transformed into his perfect<br />

Papagena, only to be immediately whisked away: he is not yet worthy of her.<br />

Convinced Tamino no longer loves her, Pamina prepares to take her own life,<br />

but is prevented by the Three Spirits, who reassure her of his devotion. Two<br />

men in armor help Tamino prepare for his final trials. Free now to speak, he<br />

is reunited with Pamina who vows to undergo the trials of fire and water<br />

alongside him. Devastated by the loss of Papagena, Papageno prepares to<br />

hang himself. But once again the Three Spirits intervene, telling him to use the<br />

magic bells to summon her back. <strong>The</strong> lovers are joyfully reunited.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Queen of the Night, Monostatos and the Three Ladies make one final<br />

attempt to overthrow Sarastro but fail. Tamino and Pamina take their first<br />

steps into a new era of wisdom.<br />

supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered, and a decisive<br />

victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with<br />

the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.”—“<strong>The</strong> Hero with a Thousand<br />

“<strong>The</strong> hero journey is a symbol that binds, in the original sense of the word,<br />

two distant ideas, the spiritual quest of the ancients with the modern search<br />

for identity.”—“<strong>The</strong> Hero’s Journey: Joseph Campbell on His Life & Work,”<br />

<strong>The</strong> hero’s journey, in Joseph Campbell’s telling, is not the journey of a hero<br />

—it’s a journey that creates a hero. But in Mozart’s late fairytale/Masonic<br />

ritual/morality play we know as <strong>The</strong> <strong>Magic</strong> <strong>Flute</strong>, who is called to travel this<br />

path? In a world that celebrates threes—three Ladies, three Spirits, three<br />

knocks at the temple door—I ask that we consider three heroes. Tamino’s<br />

journey through the opera is clearly made of hero stuff, especially where<br />

Campbell is concerned: His journey begins with a supernatural threat, he<br />

encounters many gifts and obstacles along the way, and ultimately, he gains<br />

wisdom and status in reward for his bravery and tenacity. Tamino is a rule<br />

follower: He listens well to counsel, he shows courage when faced with the<br />

unknown, he “becomes” in front of our eyes. Pamina, Tamino’s intended,<br />

is a rule breaker: Asking why, challenging expectations, asserting her own<br />

agency in a decidedly un-damsel-in-distress sort of way. She proves herself<br />

worthy of the hero’s mantle, independent of Tamino—moreover, she is<br />

essential to Tamino’s own rise to heroism, leading them both through the<br />

final, elemental trial. To once again borrow from Campbell: In undergoing<br />

the spiritual quest, Pamina and Tamino discover their own identities.<br />

By this point, however, Papageno seems to have washed out; he’s not willing<br />

or able to meet the tasks set by the priests. Papageno is a rule rejector;<br />

unlike the young lovers, Papageno knows himself rather well. His needs are<br />

simple and relatable—food, wine, and companionship are all he needs to be<br />

satisfied. Without his consent (and frequently at his objection), Papageno is<br />

launched into the hero’s journey; instead of the ritualistic trials of Pamina<br />

and Tamino, Papageno navigates a series of quotidian trials of his own,<br />

challenging his inherent goodness; Papageno, removed from the fantastical<br />

trappings of the story, is just trying to live a good and simple life. His rewards<br />

are such that many of us can connect with—a partner, a family, a home.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re we have it: A trio of heroes, each with their own strengths and<br />

shortcomings, each necessary to and dependent upon the other—a trio, a<br />

triangle, that most sacred geometry.<br />

About the Artistic Staff<br />

CRAIG KIER | Artistic Director & Conductor<br />

American Conductor Craig Kier has received high<br />

praise for his “Tesla-like intensity” and “impeccable<br />

orchestral support” while leading performances<br />

throughout the United States and on international<br />

stages. Since becoming the Director of the Maryland<br />

<strong>Opera</strong> Studio (MOS) at the University of Maryland, Kier<br />

has expanded the footprint of the program’s activities,<br />

connecting the MOS curriculum and programming to<br />

areas across campus and beyond.<br />

In 2020, Kier was named Artistic and Music Director of <strong>Annapolis</strong><br />

<strong>Opera</strong> where this season, he leads performances of <strong>The</strong> <strong>Magic</strong> <strong>Flute</strong>,<br />

Glory Denied, and <strong>The</strong> Elixir of Love. In 2023, he joined the College<br />

of Art and Humanities Dean’s office as Director of the Presidential<br />

initiative, Arts for All, and currently serves as Advisor for the<br />

Maryland <strong>Opera</strong> Studio.<br />

Recent conducting highlights for Kier include productions with<br />

San Francisco <strong>Opera</strong>’s Merola <strong>Opera</strong> <strong>Program</strong>, Wolf Trap <strong>Opera</strong>,<br />

Arizona <strong>Opera</strong>, Houston Ballet, the Brevard Music Center’s Janiec<br />

<strong>Opera</strong> Company, Anchorage <strong>Opera</strong>, Indianapolis <strong>Opera</strong>, and <strong>Opera</strong><br />

Saratoga. From 2010-2013, he was Associate Conductor at Houston<br />

Grand <strong>Opera</strong>. During his time with the company, he led dozens of<br />

performances including Madama Butterfly, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Die<br />

Fledermaus, Trial by Jury and the world premiere of Huang Ruo’s<br />

Bound. Additional guest engagements for Kier include appearances<br />

with Lyric <strong>Opera</strong> of Kansas City, Atlanta <strong>Opera</strong>, Atlanta Ballet, the<br />

Glimmerglass Festival, Central City <strong>Opera</strong>, <strong>Opera</strong> Birmingham, <strong>Opera</strong><br />

Santa Barbara, and the Royal <strong>Opera</strong> House Muscat, Oman.<br />

Kier began his career as part of Seattle <strong>Opera</strong>’s music staff, serving in<br />

a variety of roles including Assistant Conductor, Coach/Accompanist,<br />

and Chorus Master. He also served on the music staff of <strong>The</strong> Santa<br />

Fe <strong>Opera</strong>, Cincinnati <strong>Opera</strong>, Atlanta <strong>Opera</strong>, <strong>Opera</strong> Colorado and Des<br />

Moines Metro <strong>Opera</strong>.<br />
