A Message from the President
Welcome to the first production of our 51st
season of providing quality professional
opera in this region. What a joy to kick off
the season with one of the greatest operas
ever written, The Magic Flute. If you were
able to join us at either of our Insight Series
lectures, you probably left a little bit smarter
than when you arrived—at least with regard
to this production. This classic is so well
known, and much performed, that it would
be easy to think we know all about it. Yet,
Artistic Director and Maestro, Craig Kier, never ceases to enthrall with
historical context, character introductions, and explications of musical
nuances that might otherwise be missed. The second lecture by Chris
Ruli, a Masonic historian, delved into the composer’s connection to
Freemasonry, examining its history, Mozart’s own experiences with the
fraternity in Europe, and the Masonic symbols and elements found in
this work. All of this background enhances our experience when we
are transported in time to this classic story and its search for truth
and reason, love and enlightenment. As we join Prince Tamino and
Papageno on their quest to rescue Pamina, we get to explore our own
challenges and tribulations as we pursue a deeper understanding of
true love and happiness. Let’s explore and celebrate once more.
A Message from the Maestro
Welcome to the start of Annapolis Opera’s
51st Season! After a thrilling 50th Anniversary
Season, I can think of no better way to
commence this year than with this beautiful
new production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute.
Premiered in 1791 just two months before
Mozart’s death, the composer conducted
the opening alongside his librettist, Emanuel
Schikaneder, who also debuted the role
of Papageno. One of Mozart’s most wellknown
operas, the story is told in vivid detail
with a specific musical language for each
character. Mozart was, once again, ahead of
his time, using the orchestra as an increasingly more important part of
the drama and finding every opportunity to stretch the bounds of the
classical period’s musical language.
This new production, directed by Corinne Hayes and designed by
Christopher Brusberg and Peter Leibold, engages a team of artists who
bring to life the visual wonder of this magnificent work. In addition to
singers familiar to Annapolis Opera audiences, we also have several
notable debuts, all of which speak to our desire to continue to connect
our audience to the full breadth of today’s artists.
What an honor and joy it is to lead this fine cast in our new production
of The Magic Flute. I hope you enjoy the performance—we’ve surely
enjoyed creating this production and have done all we can to bring
Mozart’s masterful score to life for you!
I invite you to join us for our entire season and look forward to seeing
you throughout the year!
Synopsis
ACT I—Alone in a foreign land, Prince Tamino is attacked by a giant serpent.
He faints but, when he comes to, realizes that he has been rescued—someone
else has killed the monster. Papageno, the Queen of the Night’s bird-catcher,
is quick to claim the credit but is soon corrected by the Queen’s Three Ladies.
They give Tamino a portrait of Pamina, the queen’s daughter, who has been
abducted by the tyrant Sarastro. Tamino falls instantly in love. The Queen
herself appears and promises the Prince her daughter’s hand if he can rescue
her. To help him on his quest, the Ladies give him a magic flute and three
magical spirits to guide him. He sets off, joined by a reluctant Papageno.
Imprisoned in Sarastro’s temple, Pamina is at the mercy of the lecherous
Monostatos. But his plans are interrupted by Papageno, who tells Pamina of
Tamino’s love and his quest to rescue her. Arriving at the temple, Tamino is
greeted by a priest, who tells him that he has been deceived by the Queen
of the Night; all is not as she described. Papageno and Pamina have escaped
but are pursued by Monostatos. Papageno uses his magic bells to enchant
their pursuers, but just as they are once again free, they hear Sarastro and his
followers approaching. Pamina tells Sarastro the truth of what happened, but
Sarastro still refuses to release her. Tamino enters, captured by a triumphant
Monostatos. He and Pamina meet briefly for the first time; Monostatos is
punished. Tamino and Pamina are separated in order to prepare for the trials.
ACT II—Sarastro persuades the priests to accept Tamino and Papageno as
members if they pass the order’s tests of initiation. Tamino and Papageno
face the first trial: silence. Papageno fails almost immediately, but Tamino
holds firm. The Queen of the Night, still seeking revenge, orders Pamina to
kill Sarastro. Monostatos overhears and threatens to expose the plot unless
Pamina surrenders to his desires. But Sarastro discovers his scheme, banishes
Monostatos and forgives Pamina. Papageno and Tamino are still sworn to
silence. Papageno once again fails by talking to an old woman. Tamino plays
his magic flute, which calls Pamina to him. She speaks but he cannot reply,
forcing her to believe that he no longer loves her. Papageno expresses his
wish for a wife of his own and is rewarded by the return of the old lady. But the
instant he reluctantly agrees to marry her she is transformed into his perfect
Papagena, only to be immediately whisked away: he is not yet worthy of her.
Convinced Tamino no longer loves her, Pamina prepares to take her own life,
but is prevented by the Three Spirits, who reassure her of his devotion. Two
men in armor help Tamino prepare for his final trials. Free now to speak, he
is reunited with Pamina who vows to undergo the trials of fire and water
alongside him. Devastated by the loss of Papagena, Papageno prepares to
hang himself. But once again the Three Spirits intervene, telling him to use the
magic bells to summon her back. The lovers are joyfully reunited.
The Queen of the Night, Monostatos and the Three Ladies make one final
attempt to overthrow Sarastro but fail. Tamino and Pamina take their first
steps into a new era of wisdom.
A Message from the Stage Director
“A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of
supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered, and a decisive
victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with
the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.”—“The Hero with a Thousand
Faces,” Joseph Campbell
“The hero journey is a symbol that binds, in the original sense of the word,
two distant ideas, the spiritual quest of the ancients with the modern search
for identity.”—“The Hero’s Journey: Joseph Campbell on His Life & Work,”
Joseph Campbell
The hero’s journey, in Joseph Campbell’s telling, is not the journey of a hero
—it’s a journey that creates a hero. But in Mozart’s late fairytale/Masonic
ritual/morality play we know as The Magic Flute, who is called to travel this
path? In a world that celebrates threes—three Ladies, three Spirits, three
knocks at the temple door—I ask that we consider three heroes. Tamino’s
journey through the opera is clearly made of hero stuff, especially where
Campbell is concerned: His journey begins with a supernatural threat, he
encounters many gifts and obstacles along the way, and ultimately, he gains
wisdom and status in reward for his bravery and tenacity. Tamino is a rule
follower: He listens well to counsel, he shows courage when faced with the
unknown, he “becomes” in front of our eyes. Pamina, Tamino’s intended,
is a rule breaker: Asking why, challenging expectations, asserting her own
agency in a decidedly un-damsel-in-distress sort of way. She proves herself
worthy of the hero’s mantle, independent of Tamino—moreover, she is
essential to Tamino’s own rise to heroism, leading them both through the
final, elemental trial. To once again borrow from Campbell: In undergoing
the spiritual quest, Pamina and Tamino discover their own identities.
By this point, however, Papageno seems to have washed out; he’s not willing
or able to meet the tasks set by the priests. Papageno is a rule rejector;
unlike the young lovers, Papageno knows himself rather well. His needs are
simple and relatable—food, wine, and companionship are all he needs to be
satisfied. Without his consent (and frequently at his objection), Papageno is
launched into the hero’s journey; instead of the ritualistic trials of Pamina
and Tamino, Papageno navigates a series of quotidian trials of his own,
challenging his inherent goodness; Papageno, removed from the fantastical
trappings of the story, is just trying to live a good and simple life. His rewards
are such that many of us can connect with—a partner, a family, a home.
There we have it: A trio of heroes, each with their own strengths and
shortcomings, each necessary to and dependent upon the other—a trio, a
triangle, that most sacred geometry.
