GAETANO DONIZETTI
MARCH 15 & 17, 2024 | MARYLAND HALL

- 2 -

Greetings, Friends,
After a poignant and powerful production
of Glory Denied in January the artistic
pendulum swings to Donizetti’s comedy,
The Elixir of Love. Here we have humor,
lovely tunes, and romance in the tradition
of “Opera Buffa”.
The Elixir of Love is a product of the Romantic
Era, and, for all its romp, lovely melodies,
and buffoonery, it is centrally concerned with the narrative theme of
the triumph of sincerity—a notion fundamental to the Romantic era
worldview and one that often seems missing in contemporary times.
This magical, fun romp entertains with gusto yet also serves to shine
a light on a perennially important question—can we be shown to
be trustworthy on the basis of our emotional commitments? After
all, sincerity is grounded in values that prioritize genuine human
connectedness. Who can be trusted? Who is true and worthy of our
attention or affection?
This piece is a festive tribute to life in all its absurdity and we
welcome the laughter and joy it brings to every era. If we leave with
questions we’ve never asked before, so much the better.
A MESSAGE FROM
the maestro
Welcome to our final mainstage production
of Annapolis Opera’s 51st Season! After
memorable productions of Mozart’s The
Magic Flute and Tom Cipullo’s Glory Denied,
I can think of no better way to end our
mainstage season than with this captivating
new production of Gaetano Donizetti’s
beloved comedy, The Elixir of Love.
Premiered in 1832 and composed in some
six weeks, Donizetti’s opera was one of
the most often performed operas in Italy
within years of its premiere. Its popularity
continues, delighting audiences with believable characters to whom
we can relate, music that infuses energy and charm at every point,
and the ability to reveal the true heart within every person on stage.
This new production, directed by Ben Robinson and designed by
Rochele Mac, updates the story to a time unmistakable to our
audiences! We are excited to share this production with you and
hope you enjoy it as much as we’ve enjoyed bringing it to life.
I hope you will also join us for our Voices of Our Time Concert at
3 PM on April 14 at Asbury United Methodist Church where we will
feature past finalists from our Annual Vocal Competition. And, our
Annual Vocal Competition finals will take place on Sunday, May 5
at 3 PM in Maryland Hall. You won’t want to miss these events that
highlight our continued commitment to cultivating emerging artists!
Thank you again for joining us for this production and I look forward
to seeing you at our April and May events!
synopsis
ACT 1
Hollywood, 1989
On the Hollywood soundstage of the hit TV show The Elixir of Love,
cameraman Nemorino tries to summon the courage to express his
feelings to the star of the show, Adina. During one of the show’s
takes, Adina reads from the story of Tristan and Isolde, describing
the mysterious power of an elixir that made Isolde fall in love with
Tristan, and Nemorino is immediately struck by the story.
Adina's on-screen and off-screen partner, Belcore, joins the set,
intending to marry her both in the storyline and real life. Despite
this, Adina hesitates to set a wedding date. During a lunch break,
Nemorino seizes the moment to approach Adina, but she politely
rejects his advances.
No sooner than a commercial airs about LA’s favorite caterer, Dr.
Dulcamara himself appears on set with his team hawking his services.
Intrigued by the elixir in the story he heard, Nemorino inquires if
Dulcamara has a love potion. Dulcamara swiftly produces a cheap
bottle of wine, claiming it to be a powerful love elixir. Nemorino, eager
to try it, takes a healthy swig, but Dulcamara warns that the effects
of the “elixir” won’t be felt until one day has passed—conveniently,
enough time for Dulcamara to skip town. He confronts Adina with a
new confidence and tells her that everything is going to change in
one day: tomorrow, she will love him.
Adina remains skeptical, especially when Belcore returns, announcing
his new role in a war picture across town. With the on-screen wedding
rescheduled for the evening shoot, Belcore suggests a quick offscreen
ceremony after filming wraps up for the day. Adina reluctantly
agrees, leaving Nemorino disheartened.
- 16 -

ACT 2
Later that day
Adina now wants to get under Nemorino's skin, so she is determined
to flaunt her impending marriage with Belcore.
Concerned about the elixir's effectiveness before the wedding,
Nemorino seeks out Dulcamara again. Because Nemorino can’t afford
another bottle, Dulcamara suggests that Nemorino should take a job
on Belcore's war picture across town that pays better. Nemorino
agrees and uses his signing bonus to secure the bottle of elixir.
News spreads on the studio back lot that the studio owner, who
is Nemorino’s uncle, has passed away, leaving him as the sole heir.
Convinced that the elixir has finally worked, Nemorino is astonished
by the sudden surge of affection from everyone around him. Adina
becomes jealous of the attention he's receiving and realizes her true
feelings for Nemorino. She confesses her love for him and insists
that he return to the sitcom so that they can be together forever—on
screen and off.
A MESSAGE FROM THE
stage director
The thing that has always attracted me to opera is the flexibility
inherent in the art form. The Elixir of Love, looking very good at the
ripe age of 192, is no exception. Successful productions have placed
the action in the American West, outside an ice cream shop, and
Texas, amongst many other locales, so why not set it on a sound
stage in Hollywood in the 1980s? Before you flee for the exits, hear
me out: bel canto opera is structurally set up in a way that can feel
a bit brittle by today’s dramaturgical standards.
When I approach a piece, I want to be able to account for every
musical nuance that the composer infuses into the piece. In bel
canto compositions, this includes a lot of repetition, structure, and
rhythmic incisiveness. It’s also a naturally performative style, say,
compared to Puccini—after all, the point is to show off the glory
of beautiful singing. My objective is to find a dramatically resonant
solution that honors the integrity of the efforts of Donizetti and
Felice Romani and ushers the timeline towards something that is a
bit more recognizable in our cultural milieu.
So… Hollywood. Repeated sections become second takes or lines
to the close-up camera, the characters contextualize their delivery
differently when the cameras are rolling, and we get to be privy to
the performative qualities of a scripted show within a show. The
romance unfolds between the shy man behind the camera and the
leading lady instead of a peasant and a wealthy landowner, but the
high notes and hijinks so masterfully laid out by Maestro Donizetti
are landing in the same way as if the opera was in its original setting
in the Spanish countryside.
Novo, the Symphony continues to rise in excellence and national reputation,
performing Masterworks, Pops, Family Concerts and special events. The
Symphony reaches thousands annually with its free Pops in the Park concert,
performances in partnership with the United States Naval Academy and the
Annapolis Opera, and collaborative projects with other arts organizations
and touring headliners. Additionally, we sponsor award-winning education
concerts and outreach programs in community schools, sharing the joy of
music-making with thousands of school children, including through the
Annapolis Symphony Academy.
