walking country
Judi Morison
at the waterhole
feet tread black soil, connect with earth
walaaybaaga ngiyani yanawaanha
we are walking country
we call out to the Old Ones
tell them our names
ask them to guide us
follow bandaarr tracks along the bank
past boundary-markers
—gulabaa, bilaarr, yarraan
past wounds proud on scar trees
that gifted tools the people shaped
—coolamon, shield, canoe
we make a fire and sit
while sweet smoke whispers
welcome home
listen to the creek
hold its breath
as it rests in morning light
until a skein of wood ducks
soars, pulsates
arcs across the sky
