to you, in all our uncharted newness
my lesbian body is freshly inked country,
a tattooed archaeology.
you ask me what happened here?
Queer Queensland happened, gay hate crimes
I am somebody, a body with history.
broken ribs, hips replaced, sun-blemished skin,
scars and marks etch topography,
lay down in palimpsest on skin and bone
vein and nail, a map, an artistry of landscape
my life on record—discovery,
sites and artefacts, evidence in sediment of a time
before us.
a body is signage I say, to help you find
a way through the terrain
to the middle of somewhere
to the heart of us
