SPIRIT OF VOLUNTEERISM
SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT
Jane Katherine Mikesh was announced as the
20th recipient to receive the Ann Cannon Spirit of
Volunteerism Scholarship award during a special
afternoon social held by the Cabarrus Healthcare
Foundation with honorary guests William (Bill) and
Ann Cannon. Jane is a recent graduate of Concord
High School with a 4.48 GPA. Jane is attending
UNC Wilmington with a future goal of becoming a
Nurse Practitioner.
The Ann Cannon
Spirit of Volunteerism Scholarship
Award was established in 2004 and is
endowed through the Cabarrus Healthcare
Foundation as a gift from Bill Cannon
in honor of his wife, Ann Cannon. Bill
endowed the scholarship as recognition
of his wife’s volunteer contributions as a
founding board member and past chair
of the Cabarrus Healthcare Foundation
and her passion for Atrium Health
Cabarrus. The award is used to recognize
and support volunteer service among
members of the Junior Volunteer Program,
who have met the scholarship criteria.
This scholarship helps assist each of the
recipients as they further their educational
pursuits following high school graduation.
Since the inception of the scholarship,
there have been 20 recipients with a total
giving of $40,000.

Jane began volunteering with Atrium Health Cabarrus in 2019 and has
dedicated over 95 hours of service through the High School Volunteer
Program. Jane shared during the social that one of her very first tasks
she remembers completing was helping to create different tubes of
essential oils utilized for holistic healing that supports patients. When
the pandemic hit, Jane was furloughed with all volunteers in the hospital.
Once high school volunteers were able to return to the hospital, she began
volunteering at Levine Cancer Institute Concord while helping to provide
comfort to those patients undergoing treatments by getting them snacks
and drinks or simply talking about everyday life.
Jane shared, “As long as I can honestly remember, my career goals were
always to work in the medical field. My heart is most fulfilled when I can

help others, and I would like to think I was a ray of sunshine on a cloudy
day, and I was able to make a difference for the patients.”
During the afternoon social and to support Jane’s education and career
goals, two nurses were invited as special guest speakers. Julie Henderson
and Andrea Moody gave words of wisdom and spoke about their roles in
advanced nursing at Atrium Health Cabarrus. Julie Henderson is a clinical
nurse specialist in nursing education at Atrium Health Cabarrus. Andrea
Moody is a nurse practitioner with Transition Services at Atrium Health
Cabarrus. Both guest speakers gave great insight to Jane as she begins her
journey in nursing this fall. Jane has recently been able to shadow Andrea
Moody within the hospital to gain more insight and hands on experience
within the nursing field.
Ann shared how priceless volunteers are and how important each one is
to mankind and how thankful she is for all Jane has done for our hospital.
Ann also stated; “It is truly an honor to gift this scholarship each year to a
worthy young individual who understands the value of volunteering and
is dedicated to becoming a part of the medical field. Jane has definitely
illustrated the true meaning of volunteerism, community, and leadership.
As a recipient, I know she will continue to demonstrate this philosophy
into her future path. Jane walked into our meeting with such a glow and
enthusiasm to help others. We are excited to watch her grow, come back
home and help our patients when she graduates. We are so honored that
Jane is our 20th recipient of this scholarship, it means so much to Bill and
me to support our past and future into healthcare.”

The Breast Health Center at Atrium Health
Cabarrus has recently undergone several
upgrades. With the upgrades that have
been completed you will notice the newly
designed plaques with donor names of
those that support the Breast Health Center.
The Breast Health Center (BHC) has
been providing breast health services
to the Cabarrus community since 2001.
The BHC offers a comprehensive breast
health program that offers screenings and
diagnostic and needle biopsies using the very latest technology. Projections for
2023 show that 32,000 patients will visit the BHC, and close to 43,000 breast
services will be provided to patients in our community. We are thankful for our

Angela Reid is the new Chief Nursing Executive for
Atrium Health Cabarrus. Angela has 35 years of nursing
experience. Prior to being interim CNE, she was the
Assistant Vice President of Patient Care for Nursing
Administration. Congratulations Angela!

ALUMNI NIGHT AT
THE BALLPARK
The Cabarrus College of Health Sciences and the
Cabarrus Healthcare Foundation hosted its Annual
1942 Club Alumni Night at the Ballpark on August
31, 2023. The night was filled with food, fun and
reconnections were made with alumni and staff. During
the event, there were over 40 alumni from CCHS along
with college president, Dr. Cameron Cruickshank and
the Foundation leadership team. The 1942 Club is a
great way for alumni to stay connected to the college.

PHYSICIAN LEADERSHIP COUNCIL
FAMILY NIGHT AT THE BALLPARK
On August 11th our Physician Leadership
Council had its first family social at Atrium
Health Ballpark in Kannapolis. We had a great
time and enjoyed food, fellowship, and some
great baseball, watching the Kannapolis
Cannon Ballers play their best! It’s not often
that we gather with physicians and their
families for a ballgame, and our group had a
blast! We love getting to know our physicians
and their families outside of the four walls of
the hospital. Our PLC co-chair, Dr. Christopher
Holland, with Carolina Neurosurgery and Spine
Associates took
the field and
introduced the
crowd to our
Physician Leadership Council. Dr. Holland took
this opportunity to share some of the great things
this group does to support the Foundation. Great
job, Dr. Holland. We are so thankful for this group
of physician advocates and look forward to more
out of office social activities with them and their
families soon!

CHRISTMAS IN JULY
This past July, our Foundation
teamed up with the Jeff Gordon
Children’s Foundation to host the
3rd Annual “Christmas in July” Toy
Drive. This annual toy drive supports the patients
at the Jeff Gordon Children’s Center, Atrium Health
Cabarrus, Harrisburg, and
Kannapolis Emergency
departments. The toys
that were collected help
to normalize our pediatric
patient stay or wait while
receiving care. This year
we had two drop off locations who partnered with
our initiative; Rooms to Go – Concord and Toy Mania.
Each location was provided with a drop box that
was created and donated by Complete Design &
Packaging. We are thankful for our many partners
and our community for the support in this year’s
“Christmas in July” Toy Drive.

FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
BACK IN SERVICE
Cabarrus Healthcare Foundation held its
first back-in person Fellowship Program
on Friday, June 2nd. This invitation only
program gives our community exclusive
behind-the-scenes tours of our hospital, and
a chance to gain insight into medical and
technological advances at Atrium Health
Cabarrus. We had 6 community members
join this fellowship class in June.
