Skepticism only makes sense relating to branded<br />

content because viewers don’t know if an influencer<br />

was motivated to say something positive about a<br />

specific brand.<br />

“I have felt swayed to say good things about a<br />

product but not in the sense where it has felt forced<br />

because of the benefits I receive,” Sloan Starzyk, an<br />

Amazon Prime Student Brand Ambassador says.<br />

“If a brand offers me a paid sponsorship deal, that<br />

personally I know don’t like, but my friends do, then<br />

I will accept the offer, but it would depend on how<br />

much they pay me.” The line between honest and paid<br />

advertisements seems to be blurred. Money appears<br />

to be a major influence when influencers accept a<br />

brand deal.<br />

There have been instances of many TikTok<br />

users posting about a fake product they have received<br />

through TikTok Shop. For example, users have<br />

purchased what they thought was Sol de Janeiro’s<br />

“Brazilian Bum Bum Cream Lotion,” yet they received<br />

a lookalike with a paper wrapping around the lid,<br />

revealing that it was fake. This further demonstrates<br />

that, on social media, not all advertisements are true,<br />

and users have the right to question what they are<br />

viewing, especially when it comes to spending their<br />

money on an advertised product.<br />

TikTok’s sincerity is being questioned the more<br />

influencers are posting advertisements. Honesty is<br />

the best quality in the sense of branded content, but<br />

until community guidelines for false advertising once<br />

again change the landscape of TikTok’s influencing<br />

scene, it’s up to viewers to research and discover for<br />

themselves whether a sponsored post is the truth.<br />

The shift from sincere reviews<br />

to branded content seems to be<br />

overlooked. The beauty world is<br />

prominent on social media, but not<br />

all of it seems to be true.<br />

“The only influencer I really trust is Alix Earle,<br />

because she seems as if she is my friend and not<br />

driven by money,” Teagan Pennington, a secondary<br />

education and English major at The University of<br />

Alabama says. “I have always been skeptical of TikTok<br />

Shop because I have seen multiple posts by people<br />

with a low following saying to buy a product, but then<br />

I also see people who get scammed and receive<br />

something they did not order, so now I really don’t<br />

know what to believe about advertised content.”<br />

A new feature from TikTok, the “TikTok<br />

Shop,” allows creators to spotlight and promote<br />

products they love through a suite of in-app shopping<br />

touchpoints. Users can discover a post and tap on the<br />

link above the caption to quickly shop for a product.<br />
