Young ballerina to jet off
• By Sasha Watson
EVERY DANCER’S journey
begins with a dream, and
young ballerina Tamison
Soppet is one step closer to
realising hers after accepting
scholarships from three
international dance schools.
The 13-year-old Te Kura
correspondence school student
will head to the Royal Ballet
School in London, John Cranko
Ballet in Germany, and Princess
Grace Dance Academy in
Monaco next year after being
offered scholarships to attend
each for up to four weeks.
Said mum Toni Soppet: “She
is very excited to be going out
into the big wide world; she’s
nervous but grounded.
“We have the opportunity
to first go to New York for the
Youth Grand Prix ballet finals
and, in July, Tamison would
like to go to a summer school in
Winnipeg on a scholarship she
was offered last year.
“Then, we will come home for
a bit before leaving to go to each
of the schools in Europe.”
Tamison, a Convergence
Dance Studios student, was also
offered a fourth scholarship to
the Australian Ballet School in
Melbourne, which Soppet said
was “not being ruled out”.
Tamison’s Dance Destiny’ was
set up last week, with a goal
of $25,000.
“Every contribution, no matter
the size, would get her closer
to her dreams,” said Soppet.
The decision comes after
Tamison was recruited at the
Youth America Grand Prix ballet
competition, held in Sydney
in September, after competing
against more than 200 dancers
aged 12-14.
Tamison was called back for
further judging after three days
of performing and attending
both classical and contemporary
masterclasses, where
the junior grand prix title was
officially awarded to her by consensus
of a four-judge panel.
Said Soppet: “Though
winning competitions is
amazing, making people
feel something through her
dancing is the real triumph and
something Tamison strives for.”
Pause hit
on cycle
links; nine
projects
progressed
TWO TRANSPORT projects in
the Climate Emergency Response
Fund Transport Choices package
of works have been deferred,
while nine will go ahead when
Government funding is secured.
At last week’s city council meeting,
the Mayor and councillors
decided to defer the northern
section of the Simeon St cycle
connection and the Westmorland
cycle connection. They also decided
to scale back the delivery of
bus stops in Linwood.
They approved a staff recommendation
to progress with nine
projects when Waka Kotahi
NZ Transport Agency funding
becomes available. These include
streetscape enhancements to
Linwood Village, Linwood and
Woolston roading and transport
improvements, and improvements
to Bromley’s roads.
The decision was in response
to Waka Kotahi asking the city
council to make a 10 per cent cut
to its programme after its funding
pool was reduced by $50 million.
It is now awaiting direction from
the incoming Government, so no
further funding agreements will
go ahead with councils until this
is in place.
If the city council’s projects do
not receive Transport Choices
funding, their delivery will be
considered as a part of ongoing
Long Term Plan discussions.
SAFETY: Volunteers have been working hard to improve
the Taylors Escape trail. Above – Malcolm McClurg (left),
MTB trail repairs come to an end
• By Dylan Smits
EXTENSIVE repairs to the
Taylors Escape Mountain
Biking Trail are set to be
completed today, ensuring
enhanced accessibility and safety
for riders.
Over the past year, volunteers
have bridged 15 large holes with
wood, laid pipes for drainage and
cleared the track of plant growth
and debris.
Said Taylors Mistake
Association member Malcolm
McClurg said: “With all the track
maintenance it should be easily
ridden all year round.”
McClurg has worked with
other local volunteers to address
developing issues since the track
opened in September last year.
He said when the track was
built it lacked bridges and
drainage to prevent holes
forming in the dirt.
“Over winter, water ran
down the track with bikes, then
formed deep ruts in the mud.
Heavy winter rain also caused
underground tunnels in the
clay to collapse under the track
with dangerous holes suddenly
appearing.”
Situated on the association’s
land, the track was initially
constructed by volunteers
organised by bach owner Mike
Baddeley and bike clothing
company Ground Effect.
McClurg said the track was
created to serve as an easier
alternative for mountain bikers
in Taylors Mistake.
“Riders do not have to bike up
the Anaconda track, which is a
fast, twisting downhill
track with the potential for
dangerous collisions with uphill
riders.”
The 3km track starts at the
Taylors Mistake beach car park
and winds its way up to the
Summit Rd in Godley Head.
It is used by a diverse group
of bikers, walkers and runners,
with McClurg estimating more
than 100 people using it on busy
weekends.
McClurg has received positive
user feedback while working on
the track.
“I get big smiles and thank
yous from riders passing me as
I am working or checking the
track, and many ask how they
could help,” he said.
Outside support for the
maintenance has come from
various sources, he said.
Businesses including VIP
Frames and Trusses and the
Ferrymead Stihl Shop have
contributed timber for the
bridges and a scrub cutter,
respectively.
McClurg said a child-friendly
loop is being planned for
construction next year, based
on community feedback.
Library youth art exhibit
TŪRANGA HAS become the
home of an art takeover for
the next three months with an
exhibition room, temporary
murals, and hidden artwork
spotted around the building.
In partnership with
Christchurch City Libraries,
Sanctuary by Ōtautahi Creative
Spaces began on November 10
and will run until February 4,
showcasing over 35 rangatahi
(youth) artists from around
Christchurch.
“Sanctuary is a fantastic chance
to revitalise Tūranga by creating
a community space for our local
artists,” said exhibition curator
and producer Audrey Baldwin.
“The exhibition involves three
‘hangs’ where art will change once
a month, allowing us to showcase
as many artists and as much range
as possible.”
All pieces on display are the
work of Christchurch youth from
ŌCS – a not for profit, community
focused organisation based in
Phillipstown that uses
art and creativity to combat
mental distress.
The creative occupation
welcomes diverse rangatahi from
different backgrounds, with
different levels of art experience to
come together.
“The exhibition is a great
opportunity for young
Christchurch artists to build their
skills and confidence, elevate their
practice and feel proud and strong
in their work,” said Baldwin.
“You’ll find works with elements
of cultural narrative including
groups such as Islamic calligraphy
and reworked tuku tuku panel
patterns, alongside a rangatahi
rainbow group and a range of
young artists – this is a way for
people to amplify the voices of
those different backgrounds.”
One of the aims of the project
is to show what’s on offer at the
library by promoting smaller
activations throughout the
building, as well as ongoing
interventions and events,
including an open sketch club, a
spoken word event and a gender
euphoria clothes swap.
Teen sets new national
Rubik’s Cube record
• By Dylan Smits
A RECENTLY graduated
Cashmere High School student
has broken a national Rubik’s
Cube record during a competition
in Lyttelton.
Jasper Murray, 17, completed
a 3x3x3 cube in 4.61 seconds on
Saturday, beating the previous
record by 0.4 seconds.
Said Christchurch Speedcubers
founder Mike Field: “That
might not sound like a lot, but
at this level it’s actually huge.”
Murray and 45 other
competitors gathered at
the recreation centre for
Lyttelton Spring 2023, an
official World Cube Association
event.
Excited by his new record,
Murray said he did not expect
to get it.
“I was getting super tired
towards the end of the day, so I
was happy I managed it.”
Murray broke a world record
last year when he got the fastest
average of five pyraminx cube
solves.
A pyraminx is a triangleshaped
puzzle cube.
He was the first New
Zealander to break a
speedcubing world record,
averaging 1.66 seconds for his
RECORD BREAKING:
17-year-old Jasper Murray
broke the New Zealand
Rubik’s Cube record on
Saturday.
pyraminx solves.
Murray is pleased to be going
to the speedcubing nationals in
December with a new record.
“Definitely a confidence
boost for sure.”
He said practice is the most
important thing to get to a high
skill level in speedcubing.
“It pays off. You just need
to have dedication over a long
period of time.”
Field created the Lyttelton
Spring competition in 2021
with collaborator Chris Mills.
It stands out as a key fixture in
the New Zealand speedcubing
scene.
“Speedcubing is an awesome
hobby as it’s challenging and
intriguing, but also one that
gives young people access to
an incredible community of
talented people,” Field said.
Speedcubers from China,
India, the Philippines and the
United Kingdom, as well as
New Zealand participants,
showcased their skills across
various categories. These
ranged from 2x2x2 to 7x7x7
cubes and even blindfolded
challenges.
In the majority of events,
competitors were ranked on
their average time of five solves,
discounting their fastest and
slowest.
The competition had a mix
of seasoned and amateur
participants, Field said.
“We love to encourage new
competitors, and actually I give
a prize for fastest newcomer at
competitions I’m involved with
to try and keep it competitive at
either end of the spectrum.”
Field said speedcubing fans
can anticipate more South
Island competitions in 2024.
New Work – a textural delight
• By Dylan Smits
ARTISTS VICTORIA Pallin
and Lorelei Jenner are set to
captivate audiences with their
inaugural exhibition, New Work,
starting on Tuesday.
“This is a culmination of a
year’s work for us both, and we
are very excited to present our
work publicly,” Pallin said.
Pallin, of Sumner, will unveil
60 pieces of jewellery. Jenner,
of Mt Pleasant, will display 29
paintings and ceramics.
The two artists have pooled
their respective talents, hoping
to create a rich show across three
different artforms that flows
together seamlessly.
Jenner hopes viewers will
appreciate the vibrant colours,
textures and playfulness in
her work, while Pallin anticipates
visitors will enjoy the variety
within her collection of jewellery.
It is first time Pallin and
Jenner have collaborated on an
exhibition.
“We know each other very well
and share a great passion for all
types of art,” Pallin said.
The title ‘New Work’ reflects
the artists delving into new
artforms.
“New Work comes from a new
direction for me with my painting
and colour-work. Plus, I’ve
only been working in ceramics
for two years,” Jenner said.
Pallin said all of her work
NEW DIRECTIONS: Lorelei Jenner will exhibit her paintings and ceramics alongside Victoria Pallin’s hand-forged silver
jewellery at Pumanawa Gallery from November 28.
could be described as new “because
I’ve only been practicing
for three years”.
Jenner is a self-taught painter.
She has exhibited in New
Zealand and Australia over
the past two decades and earned
recognition as a finalist in the
Wallace Art Awards in 2001.
Reflecting on the technical
aspects of her art, she said, “All
of my ceramic pieces are thrown
on a wheel, not hand built. My
paintings are acrylic on board or
canvas.”
Pallin was born in Kuwait
and draws inspiration from
the region’s jewellery alongside
contemporary European styles.
She engages in intricate
processes such as sawing,
texturing, shaping and soldering
and for her jewellery.
Some of her pieces involve
the ancient Korean technique of
Keum Boo, the process of applying
24-carat gold leaf to silver
using heat.
Among the standout pieces at
the exhibition, Jenner is proud
of her ceramic
pedestal bowl for
its combination
of colours and
expressive pencil
lines, which
mirrors her
turquoise and lime
painting (right).
Pallin said she
is particularly
enthusiastic about
her cast silver bangles and rings,
emphasising the hand-forged
feel achieved through the casting
process.
Aiming to be
contemporary
and experimental,
Pallin said she
favours working
with silver to
create a simple
geometric
aesthetic.
New Work will
be open daily from
November 28 to December 3 at
the Pumanawa Gallery in the
Arts Centre.
Preparing for a Happy Holiday Season at Kōwhai Vet
The holiday season is fast approaching, and
as we prepare to celebrate with our loved
ones, it’s essential not to forget our furry family
members. At Kōwhai Vet Clinic, we want to
ensure that your pets are in the best possible
health and spirits during the upcoming
festivities. Here are a few key things to keep
in mind as we head into the holiday season.
Check your pet’s vaccination records
Before you embark on your holiday travels and
your pets check into the boarding kennels or
cattery, be sure to check their vaccinations are
up to date. This not only ensures the safety
and well-being of your furry friends during
their stay, but also eliminates the last-minute
stress of being turned away from the kennels
because their vaccinations are overdue. Our
experienced veterinarians are here to guide
you on the specific vaccinations your pet may
need based on their individual requirements.
Preparing for a comfortable journey
If your holiday plans involve travel, it’s
essential to prepare your pets for the journey.
Consider bringing their travel cage into your
living space a week or so before departure,
creating a cosy bed inside and leaving
some treats to entice them. This gradual
introduction allows your pets to become
accustomed to the carrier in a familiar and
safe environment. For those taking to the
skies, ensure that your pet’s carrier meets
the correct size and specifications for plane
travel. Planning ahead and familiarising your
pets with their travel arrangements minimises
stress for both you and your furry companions.
Anxiety-Free Travel
If your pet tends to get anxious when on
the move there are a number of options for
reducing their anxiety to make the trip go more
smoothly for them. Using a pheromone spray
such as Feliway for cats or Adaptil for dogs, can
make them feel more settled in their carrier, or
on their bed in the car. While we cannot sedate
animals for travel, we can provide medications
to help reduce stress and anxiety, keeping
them much calmer for the journey. Like us,
some pets can also experience travel-sickness,
so medications to reduce nausea can also
be of benefit. Consult with our veterinarians
to discuss the best options for your pet’s
individual needs.
Health Check
If you’ve had any concerns about your pet’s
health, consider having them checked out
before heading away for the holidays so
that a minor issue doesn’t progress to a
bigger problem. If your pet is on long term
prescription medications, you may want to
ensure that you have enough medication on
hand to last you through the holidays and
your time away. If your pet has not seen a vet
recently they may require a health check prior
to dispensing more medication, so ensure you
leave plenty of time to fit this into your busy
schedule.
Microchip Details
Ensure all your contact details registered to
your pets microchip are up to date. If they go
missing whilst you’re away, you want to make
sure they can be returned to you as quickly as
possible.
A Special Treat for Your Furry Friends
The holiday season is a time of joy, but it can
also be a time of stress for pets. Changes in
routine, visitors, and new surroundings can
sometimes be overwhelming for them.
Creating a safe space where they can escape
the festive chaos can give them a sense of
security, and providing enrichment toys can
help ease their anxiety and provide muchneeded
mental stimulation.
At Kōwhai Vet Clinic, we have a delightful
selection of enrichment toys and treats in
stock to make your pets feel cherished during
the festive season.
From interactive toys to scrumptious treats,
we have everything you need to put a smile on
your pet’s face and keep them engaged and
happy throughout the holiday season.
Don’t wait until the last minute! Schedule
your pet’s vaccinations and health check
today to guarantee a stress-free and joyful
holiday season.
And don’t forget to drop by our clinic to
explore our selection of fantastic enrichment
toys and treats for your pets. After all, they
deserve a special Christmas gift too!
Start a new
Christmas tradition
What could be better than starting some new family traditions this year? Christmas traditions are memories
in the making and help spread a little festive cheer whether with your loved ones or out in the community.
10 great ideas to help make Christmas a magical time of the year
1. Create a Christmas playlist with some of
your favourite carols and songs – play it
loud and every day, if that’s your thing.
Or plan a pre-Christmas sing-along
evening – don’t forget to supply the song
sheet so everyone can join in too.
2. Get into the spirit of Christmas by getting
together with family or friends to help
decorate each other’s houses – turn up
the music, drink the wine and go all out
to deck the halls.
3. Make and send homemade Christmas
cards – there’s nothing more exciting
than getting mail, right? Or how about
writing some generic ones and dropping
them into your nearest retirement
home to brighten up an elderly person’s
Christmas.
4. Buy your family Christmas tee-shirts or
Santa hats to wear on the day and don’t
forget to take a family selfie.
5. Fill a shoebox with gifts for a child, wrap
it with a bow, and deliver to the nearest
community gift tree – check with your
local library and label with age and
gender.
6. Have a yearly family, friends or neighbour
outdoor games night with drinks and
nibbles leading up to the big day – think
Pétanque, hoopla, mini golf, giant chess,
or croquet.
7. Take a leaf out of Iceland’s traditional
‘Jolabokaflod’ or Christmas Book Flood,
and give a book as a gift on Christmas
Eve each year – don’t forget to write
inside the cover who it’s from and the
date.
8. Make a list of must see Christmas movies
to watch a week before Christmas day
and tick off the ones you’ve watched.
Don’t forget the popcorn and hot
chocolate or nibbles and wine.
9. Make and give a handmade ornament
as a gift each year – the lucky receiver’s
Christmas tree will be covered with
beautiful, handmade memories.
10. Make homemade hot chocolate on
Christmas Eve or on Christmas morning
to drink while the presents are being
opened – decorate with whipped cream,
grated chocolate, marshmallows, or
crushed candy canes.
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Christmas is a great time for passing down recipes that are tried and true becoming
traditional family favourites. The owner of this recipe says her mum used to make
the pudding on Christmas Eve and would take the bowl and wooden spoon around
everyone in the house to stir the mixture and make a wish.
Make a Wish Christmas Pudding
You will need:
• 1 ½ tbsp butter
• 1 ½ tsp baking soda
• 1 ½ cups of boiling water
• 1 ½ cups flour
• 1 ½ cups mixed fruit or sultanas
• ¾ cup sugar
Method:
1. In a glass or stainless steel bowl,
melt the butter (over hot water)
and dissolve the baking soda.
2. Add the boiling water and
sugar.
3. When cool, add flour and
mixed fruit.
4. Stir all the ingredients together
and make a Christmas wish.
5. Cover bowl with a tea towel and
allow to stand overnight.
The next day:
• Place mixture into a greased
bowl or ice-cream container,
cover with tinfoil and place in a
pot of water, just deep enough
so the bowl doesn’t float.
• Boil pudding for four hours and
check regularly to make sure
the water has boiled dry. Top
up carefully with extra water if
required.
• Serve with heaps of Chantilly
cream!
Chantilly
Cream
You will need:
• 1 x bottle of cream
• ½ tsp vanilla essence
• 1 tbsp icing sugar to
sweeten
Method:
Put cream, vanilla essence
and icing sugar in a bowl and
whisk until light and fluffy with
softly formed peaks. Cover and
refrigerate until ready to serve.
