MONTHLY NEWS FLASH
Seasonal influenza and Covid vaccinations
The covid and flu vaccine clinics, jointly operated by the
practices in North Cotswolds, have been very successful
and have now finished. We are able to arrange flu vaccines
at the surgery for eligible patients who still require their
vaccine. Eligible patients wishing to receive a covid vaccine
can book via the NHS service, which is still available, by
telephoning 119 or booking online via the NHS.uk website.
Facebook page
The surgery has a Facebook page for patient information,
which is updated regularly. Please like our page to receive
updates.
Shingles vaccine – changes to the programme from 1st
September 2023
Patients have been contacting us regarding the updated
NHS programme. Unfortunately, the national advertising
campaign has not been clear about informing patients who
are currently eligible. For example, patients who ‘turn’ 65
after 1st September 2023 are eligible but patients who were
already 65 on this date are not eligible until they ‘turn’ 70.
As with all programme roll outs, this is a staged rollout to
Roadworks affecting surgery access on Back Ends
We have been assured that the Thames Water roadworks
will be completed soon but, after this, more roadworks by
gigaclear will affect access. Information can be found on
Staff changes
Steph, our Health Care Assistant and Receptionist, has now
finished and we would like to thank her for her efficient and
professional work with our patients. We wish her the very
best wishes for her retirement.
Colette, our long serving Practice Nurse, is also retiring
fully after December and we would like to thank her for
her many years of experience helping patients, in particular
our diabetic patients. We also wish her the very best for her
retirement.
Surgery Patient Participation Group
We held a successful meeting at the surgery on 24th October,
when we discussed closer working between the PPG and
Surgery Friends in order to raise funds for equipment,
shared surgery updates and discussed provision of services.
The minutes are available on the surgery website and the
next meeting will be held in February 2024. We would
like to thank the PPG members who voluntarily give their
time to assist the surgery with this group. We also continue
to review the feedback forms submitted by patients after
appointments and endeavour to react to these when
themes are identified. We are very grateful for the positive
comments shared by patients when accessing the surgery, as
staff very much appreciate this.
We would like to wish all of our patients a happy and
healthy festive season.
THE PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP
AT CHIPPING CAMPDEN SURGERY
It has been a contractual requirement by the NHS for all GP
practices since 2015, to have a Patient Participation Group
(PPG). The objective is that patients, carers, and practice staff
meet and discuss any perceived issues and patient feedback,
in order to improve the overall experience.
The PPG is not a forum for complaints about individuals,
practice staff or the pharmacy - the purpose is to improve the
experience for all, whether patient or healthcare professional.
Following the PPG annual meeting in April at the Old Police
Station, we established a working group of patients to meet
more regularly with staff from the surgery. The focus of
discussions from our most recent meeting included ways in
which we can improve communications between the surgery
and patients including: how to better inform patients of
surgery news and developments and gain feedback and how
we inform patients of upcoming targets set by the NHS so
that patient education and equipment donations could be
tailored to this.
The next meeting is scheduled for 6pm on Tuesday 6th
February at the surgery. If you would like to be more actively
involved with the PPG and attend the meeting on 6th February,
please contact me by email: suewildpritchard@gmail.com
BEATRICE CORRY
MEMORIAL SERVICE
Beatrice Corry’s family would like
to invite anyone from the Chipping
Campden community and locality who
knew her, to a memorial service which
will be taking place in St James’ Church
on 16th December at 12pm noon.
CHIPPING CAMPDEN SURGERY
FRIENDS CHARITABLE TRUST
As a small town, Chipping Campden is blessed with a number
of charitable trusts, some of which have the tremendous
benefit of having very large capital reserves. Our charity is
very much the minnow in the pond. Over ten years ago we
received two generous bequests which we have invested
wisely. However, as a local charity we really do need your
support at the moment to guarantee our long term ability to
support the surgery. During the financial year 2022 -2023,
our income was £1210, thanks to two Lenten Lunches falling
in the same year. During this year we donated £4183 to
the surgery. The largest expenditure was for £2883 for an
asthma testing kit. Since then we have had no income but
have just paid a further £1963 for a new ECG machine. This
will enable the surgery to carry out testing on site rather than
patients having to make the journey to a hospital. This level
of financial support has eaten significantly into our bank
account balances and it won’t be long before we start drawing
money from our investment funds.
How can you help us?
Firstly, we would really like as many of you as possible either
to make a one-off donation to our Trust or set up a monthly
direct debit. If 50 patients felt they could afford a monthly
direct debit of £10, this would generate an annual income of
£6,000. This is easy for you to set up with your bank and our
bank details are as follows:
Account name: Campden Surgery Friends
Sort Code: 30-93-11
Account number: 02118208
If you do make a donation and are a tax payer, please email
me (price.evergreens@gmail.com) your details so the Trust
can claim the tax relief. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
Secondly, we are holding our first Quiz Night on the evening
of Friday 9th February 2024 in the Campden Church Rooms,
7pm until 10pm. We will be selling a ticket for a table of six
persons for £60. This will include a substantial ploughman’s
supper half way through the evening and will cover our
costs. We will be providing a bar for wine, beers and soft
drinks with a debit card reader. You might already be part of a
regular quiz team or you might get together with some friends
and neighbours to make up a team. We will need payment up
front before the evening as the venue has limited space. If this
event is a success then it could become a regular annual event
with a larger venue. If you would like to book a table ticket,
please email Mark Reckitt who will send you details of how
to pay. Email mark.reckitt@gmail.com
Finally, we will be providing our regular Lenten Lunch
on Tuesday 12th March 2024. This year’s lunch was a big
success and was very well-supported, raising another £450
towards our funds.
Thank you for your continued support.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
We welcome your contributions.
Email: editor@campdenbulletin.co.uk
Dear Editor
We have recently moved house and during our move I have
lost our diary with all of my rainfall figures in. Does anyone
in Chipping Campden measure and record the daily rainfall?
I am missing the first six months of this year (2023).
Jim Gladwin
(Anyone with information please send via. Editor. Thanks)
Dear Editor
At the November Town Council meeting I asked “why there
was a payment for legal fees for £3,753 and in the budget/
spend up to September 2023 there was a figure of £7,782.
Could I therefore understand that the total spend to date for
legal fees was £11,535”. Unfortunately, neither the Chairman
of the Council nor the the Chairman of the Finance committee
were able or prepared to answer my question, but I was told it
would be discussed later in the meeting under finance. It was
not discussed and the proposed budget was nodded through
without any discussion. The estimated budget for legal fees
has risen from £1,000 to £12,000.
A few months ago a resident from Back Ends put a very
eloquent plea to the Council to consider improving the safety
of pedestrians in Back Ends, also a resident from Poplars
Close put an equally eloquent case for traffic calming in
Westington. Sadly I doubt either of these projects will be
moving forward as money from these budgets is being moved
to cover the legal fees.
Why is such a large part of our precept being paid out in legal
fees, with no explanation, while projects to help the safety
and prosperity of our Town are being left on the back burner.
A concerned resident.
Sally Lindner
Dear Editor
Through the Bulletin, we would like to ask your readers if
they would consider setting up a regular monthly donation to
help us support more young people in the area?
Campden Edge spends less than 2% on administration costs,
therefore the vast majority of donations are spent on what
they are intended for – supporting local youngsters. In our
last financial year, we provided lessons for 42 students, in
these subjects: singing, drama, guitar, woodwind, piano,
cello, flute, drums, saxophone, trombone and brass. We also
provided funding for English literature text books, theatre
and pantomime tickets and workshops.
4
Local support allows youngsters to access opportunities
that they would, otherwise, not be able to afford and also
helps them to progress in many other areas of their lives, e.g.
confidence building; raising self-esteem; improving decision
making; raising IQ; reducing stress, anxiety and depression;
and improving academic achievement, concentration levels,
behaviour and school attendance.
Campden Edge works closely with the schools in Campden
Vale, and with individuals needing support. Due to Covid and
the cost of living crisis, there has been a dramatic increase in
student applications from the preceding year, all of whom
receive ongoing support from Campden Edge – a monthly
donation would help us to ensure that no child is left behind.
If you would like to support local young people, please visit
campdenedge.org or contact campdenedge@gmail.com.
If you prefer to speak to someone, please contact Keyna
Doran on 07729 193516.
We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all
our many supporters and wish everyone a happy and healthy
Christmas and New Year.
Best wishes,, Keyna Doran
COMMUNITY LUNCHES
DECEMBER 2023 / JANUARY 2024
We hope that everyone who has attended our Community
Lunches this autumn (one in September, two in October and
two in November) has enjoyed them. The numbers have been
steady at around 30, but all are welcome and we cater for a
larger number of people each time. The atmosphere is very
convivial with some new friendships being formed as well as
some existing friendships being rekindled.
Looking ahead to December and the New Year we are carrying
on with the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month but the
fourth Tuesday in December is Boxing Day and I am afraid
our team is not available to do lunch so there will only be
one lunch in December on Tuesday 12th. Then we will have
lunches as usual on Tuesday 9th January and Tuesday 23rd
January 2024.
For the December lunch we anticipate we might be quite busy
and we will have some extra special things as it will be nearly
Christmas. We will of course have soup and hot puddings, but
in addition, one of the puddings will be Christmas pudding,
and we will also be holding a ‘blind’ mince-pie tasting. And
as it is Christmas, there might even be a sweet treat to take
home, as well as some Christmas Carols playing on the sound
system.
SIR GEOFFREY
CLIFTON-BROWN
MP FOR THE COTSWOLDS
Public Accounts Committee
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is
one of the most important and powerful
select committees in the House of
Commons, scrutinising how taxpayers’ money is spent
and examining where it has not been done well. My role
is Deputy Chair, supporting the Chair in the effective
function of the committee which holds two public
hearings a week when the house sits. Each inquiry is
attended by witnesses, nearly always with the most senior
civil servants from all government departments.
There is an enormous amount of evidence from each
hearing and unless one is fully prepared the civil servants
run rings around the committee! We are backed up by
the National Audit Office which acts as our source of
information for our hearings.
We examine expenditures from across the government,
but often our focus is on when things have gone wrong,
such as with HS2, the New Hospital Programme, and
School Buildings including those with RAAC. After the
hearings, we produce reports with recommendations
for the government, they are then obliged to respond to
whether they accept these recommendations or not within
60 days. Generally, the government accepts around 80%.
A recent example of when the committee has been able
to help resolve an issue includes when Covid travel
restrictions were lifted the passport office received a
record number of applications leading to a huge backlog
in issuing passports. The PAC held an inquiry with a
report published in April with strong recommendations to
the government, the backlog has now largely been solved.
The job of the Deputy Chair of the committee takes up
at least a day a week, but it is a hugely rewarding role
particularly when we have an inquiry where we can
directly improve things for constituents, for example with
broadband, or council borrowing. This year alone we have
held 37 inquiries into issues including Supported Housing,
Condition of School Buildings, Homes for Ukraine, and
Flood Defences.
It has been another busy year in Parliament, and I
thank all of you who have contacted me. I look forward
to representing you in 2024, if you would like to raise
anything with me or think I can help you in some way,
please get in touch.
Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
No Meeting in December
Tuesday 23rd January 2024: ‘Exploring The Cam
: memories and points of interest’ - Vanessa Rigg.
BBC comes to Campden
The recent visit of ‘Question Time’ to Campden
brought back memories of past programmes which
involved local people (more than the half-dozen who
were in the audience last month). In October 1948 the
well-known radio host Wilfred Pickles came, inviting
people to ‘Have a Go’. The recording would have been
at Ebrington if a suitable hall had been available there.
It was moved to the bigger Hall at Campden School,
and because it was really Ebrington’s programme the
village had a big share of the 250 tickets.
The Evesham Journal published a full report with
quotes from the participants, which can be seen on
the CCHS website: here is an extract:
HUMOUR AND WISDOM FROM COTSWOLD
CHARACTERS
If there was any doubt that the first Cotswold ‘Have a
Go’ recording at Chipping Campden Grammar School on
Tuesday evening would be a roaring success it was finally
dispelled when 74 year old Mrs Kate Drinkwater, who has
eight married daughters and 21 grandchildren and has lived
in Ebrington all her life, earnestly told Wilfred Pickles that
if she were not herself she would like to be Mae West.
Mrs Drinkwater, a solemn bespectacled little woman who
cultivates an allotment and wins prizes at the local flower
show was one of seven local men and women cleverly
selected by Mr Pickles and his assistants from many
volunteers to take part in the programme. As well as getting
the biggest laugh of the evening she earned warm applause
for her homely wisdom. Her ambition for the future was
‘peace in the world.’
Britain’s most popular radio programme is an expensive
one. It is meticulously organised and within the limits of
a single evening carefully prepared. A team of first-class
performers gave a variety show lasting an hour to put the
audience in the right frame of mind before Mr Pickles with
a few preliminary words brought it to the necessary state of
exuberance. “Regard it as a family party,” said Mr Pickles.
“Laugh as heartily as if you had paid to come in. Think of
it just as a bit of a do in Chipping Campden. Unfasten your
coats and loosen your corsets.”
There was a family atmosphere all right. By the time the
‘Have a Go’ chorus (previously rehearsed) had been heartily
rendered: William Pickles had been announced by the
producer (Barney Colehan) and had been greeted with the
usual lusty cheer and had delivered his customary greeting
(“Ladies and gentlemen of Chipping Campden - ’ow do”),
the audience were ready to laugh and clap at anything.
“I bet you thought I was tall, dark and handsome,” he
told them when he first appeared and added, “I thought
you were better looking too.”
Mrs Nellie Trimmer Daubeny, of Springhill, who lives
in a cottage ‘half a mile from nowhere else’ and is the
wife of a cowman, said she would like to be the Duchess
of Gloucester; and Bill Paine (“I lives in Yubberton”)
told a delightful story of how he helped to shift a fowl
pen by remaining inside and carrying the perches whilst
his friends did the work.
UPDATE
PLANNING & CONSERVATION MATTERS
recently identified varieties from the Apple Fest visit by
PTES. With the festive season approaching, why not think
about serving Mulled Apple Juice or perhaps mixing up an
‘English Garden’ cocktail for the big day, made with apple
juice, mint, gin and elderflower cordial. And, of course,
a bottle of juice would be a terrific addition to anyone’s
Christmas stocking. Cheers, everyone!
Wolds End Apple Juice is now available to purchase at £3.50
a 75cl bottle. They can be bought from Rachel’s Stall in Back
Ends. Alternatively we can deliver cases at a discounted price
to Campden Society members : 6 bottles at £20 or 12 at £40
in the Campden area; to purchase, please contact Geoffrey
White on 0781 500 5879 or geoffreymwhite@gmail.com
The Campden Society continue to monitor planning
applications for properties in the Chipping Campden and
Broad Campden area. In particular, we look at the impact
on the surrounding environment, neighbouring properties,
potential flooding, parking, traffic flow, the commercial
viability, and the heritage of the town.
We have attended meetings with residents of Stickler Close
(and representatives of GCC and CDC) about their recent
flooding; commented on various planning applications
including the resubmission of an application to convert Lloyds
Bank; and are supporting the NDP with a Society member on
the Working Party. The Neighbourhood Development Plan
continues its progress and the Working Party hope to have a
draft for the December meeting of the Town Council.
We encourage everyone to submit their individual views
about planning applications to Cotswold District Council.
Several members have been
roaming Campden footpaths for
the Gloucestershire Stone Stile
Project which started in 2019 by
volunteers from Gloucestershire
CPRE. The project has now
logged over 1100 stiles which
can be viewed via a map: www.
cpreglos.org.uk/creating-arecord-of-gloucestershire-stonestiles/
The most common stile
in the county is the ‘slab’ which
locals can see at the start and
the end of Five Mile Drive; we
also have a ‘slab’ at Blind Lane
Bridge. Less common are ‘step’ stiles which can be found at
the Station Road entrance to the Coneygree and at the Dyer’s
Lane end of the Upper Leasows footpath. Do you know of
anymore? A volunteer from the project will be coming to talk
to the Chipping Campden History Society in April next year.
WOLDS END ORCHARD
The 2023 harvest was hand picked by the Orchardeers and
pressed locally. It has produced a lighter,
crisper style compared to 2022 juice.
Each bottle contains a range of apples
from the orchard including old English
varieties like Blenheim Orange (first
identified in 1740 in Woodstock); Tom
Putt (late 1700s); Bramley’s Seedling
(1810) & John Standish (1873) as well
as some rare, local varieties for example
Rose of Ciren, which is one of the most
WORK PARTIES : 2nd & 4th Saturdays
by our
stakeholders
and visiting
experts. Well
done to all
concerned!
COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDERS
WANT YOUR HELP TO SAVE LIVES
Community First Responders (CFRs) are trained volunteers
who provide immediate assistance in medical emergencies
before professional help arrives. The team plays a crucial
role in the early stages of an emergency, offering basic life
support, administering CPR and using defibrillators. All of
which help improve the chances of survival for individuals
experiencing a medical crisis.
We have been up and running for over a year now and during
this time, the local team have attended many incidents in
Chipping Campden, Mickleton, and surrounding villages
- in most cases arriving well before an ambulance. Whilst
waiting, the CFRs can provide vital first aid, and in one
case, have deployed the Automated External Defibrillator.
We can also update the Ambulance Service and, on some
occasions, upgrade the incident to ensure a faster response.
On a weekly basis, the CFR team deal with cardiac issues,
strokes, and injury following falls. We are equipped with
a ‘Raizer Chair’ (funded by the Captain Tom Foundation)
which enables us to lift patients from the floor preventing
more complex issues; and we are currently being supported
by the Chipping Campden Community Trust and the
Chipping Campden Rotary Club.
Chipping Campden’s Community First Responders are
growing with two new volunteers on board, Jill Leese
and Duane Tipping. They are in training and will soon be
available to help the three existing volunteers in the area.
Although we are supported by South Western Ambulance
Service Trust, our equipment is funded through public
donations. With an expanding team, additional basic life
support equipment is now needed.
Gloucestershire has one CFR car based in Cheltenham
and is available to all 70 responders across the county.
The vehicle is highly visible to other road users and to
the Ambulance crews approaching emergency incidents.
Recently we have used this and you may have seen it around
the town. When the CFR car is not available, we drive our
own vehicles, however, we would like to raise funds to buy
a second vehicle to be based in or near Chipping Campden.
As well as being high visible, the vehicle is equipped with
basic life support equipment, oxygen, a ‘Raizer chair,’ and
comes fully kitted out with communication equipment and
specialist lighting.
We have set an initial target of £25,000 for both extra
equipment for our growing team and a second vehicle.
The Chipping Campden Rotary Club are organising a wine
tasting evening on Friday 19th January at 7pm in the Town
Hall. A selection of wines will be available with expert
advice, together with food and entertainment. Tickets are
£30 per head and can be purchased by contacting
Donna Evans 07867361180 donna@bucklehouse.com or
Jill Lees 07778 764604 jillleese@live.com.
Local responders will also be raising funds by hosting a Lent
Lunch in the Church Rooms on Tuesday 20th February. If
you would like support this valuable cause and save lives in
the North Cotswold area, please come along to one of our
events: If you would like to help out at the Lent lunch or
need any further information, please contact Mark Evans
(CFR ) 07834810804 or mark@bucklehouse.com.
If you are unable to support
our fundraising by attending
the events but would like to
make a donation.
This can be made through
Charlie and the
Chipping Campden
Music Festival
After 21 years,
Charlie Bennett
is stepping down
as Founder and
Artistic Director
of the Chipping
Campden Music
Festival, a festival
that he created
in 2002 and has
built into one
of the country’s
leading music
festivals, bringing the world’s most beautiful music,
played by the world’s best musicians, to our community
and attracting audiences from all over the world to
Chipping Campden.
As with most things in life, this mighty festival started
small, over a glass or two of wine around Charlie’s
kitchen table. It quickly gained followers and reputation,
fuelled by Charlie’s vision and uncompromising musical
taste. From the very beginning he was determined to
engage the very best artists he could afford. He hired a
good Steinway and whatever funds he raised went almost
exclusively on artists. He even hand made the tickets and
did all the admin himself, supported by loyal volunteers,
several of whom are still part of the team today.
Originally the Festival ran for only 5 days but steadily
it grew to a week, 10 days, and then a full fortnight.
Gradually Charlie started to engage more and more wellknown
players, some of whom were paid with cases of
wine. In 2005 a brilliant young pianist called Paul Lewis
agreed to become the Festival’s President. Paul, now
one of the world’s leading performers, makes time every
year to come and perform at the Festival. Fittingly, for
Charlie’s last concert on the 6th December in St James’
Church, Paul will be performing three Schubert sonatas,
favourites of Charlie’s.
Charlie has always been incredibly modest about his
part in the success of the Festival. He believed that to
succeed, ‘a festival needs a great team, a great venue,
a great piano and a great audience.’ St James’ Church,
described by Alfred Brendel as ‘one of the finest acoustics
I encountered in my 60 year career’ has been vital to the
success of the Festival. The beautiful Steinway, bought by
the Festival in 2013, with donations from the community,
attracts the best pianists. The Campden audiences are
loved by the performers for their respect and focus.
After one concert a very eminent musician commented
“I think that is the quietest and most attentive audience I
have played for in my whole career”.
To support exceptional musicians at the start of their
careers, Charlie, with Thomas Hull, who is Alfred Brendel
and Paul Lewis’ agent and a well-respected musician, set
up a side-by-side training orchestra in 2008 and called it
the Chipping Campden Festival Academy Orchestra.
It has become one of the world’s most respected schemes
with over 150 applicants annually for the 21 places.
Many of the alumni have gone on to play in the world’s
greatest orchestras, spreading the word about this
magical music festival in the Cotswolds.
Charlie’s philosophy has always been that it is, and
always will be, all about the music. In his own words,
“the musicians get to know that the Chipping Campden
Music Festival is a place where no one goes to be seen,
or for the interval drinks, or the social occasion, it’s a
wonderful atmosphere in which to hear their colleagues
perform. The music is paramount.”
His disregard for pomp is well known. Charlie’s longtime
friend, Gordon Hayward, remembers: ‘Without
exception, Charlie introduced one towering performer
or ensemble after another from cities across the world,
seemingly dressed just slightly above the way he dressed
that morning to walk across High Street to pick up the
morning Guardian at The Coop. I am reminded of a
quote from the American 19th century writer of Walden
Pond, Henry David Thoreau: “They who have at length
found something to do will not need to get a new suit to
do it in. Beware all enterprises that require new clothes.”
The 2023 Festival was Charlie’s swansong. As a fine
pianist himself, he filled the programme with his heroes -
some of the greatest pianists in the world. In the 8 Bells
after one concert, he found himself sitting between two
piano titans, Alfred Brendel and Emanual Ax, sharing
stories and bottles of wine, both of them there as part
of the Festival that he’d created. “I had to pinch myself,”
he said. “It was a dream come true, one that in 2002, I
would have never imagined possible.”
So how do you follow in the footsteps of such a class
act as Charlie Bennett? This Festival must go on. Its
longstanding and dedicated trustees, Ailsa Scott, David
Roberts and Arthur Cunynghame, will offer continuity
with their guidance and support. Charlie has handed
the reins to his two colleagues, Thomas Hull and Jessica
May, both of whom have worked alongside him for many
years and who understand its essence intrinsically. As
Artistic Director, Tom’s vast knowledge, exquisite taste
in music and formidable reputation in the international
musical arena will ensure that the Chipping Campden
Music Festival will continue to attract the world’s
greatest musicians and maintain its reputation as a one of
the best. Jessica, who is a well-respected producer and
musician, with a long list of successful large-scale projects
under her belt, will take over the day-to-day operations
of the Festival - the glue that binds it all together. Their
philosophy echoes Charlie’s. The music is paramount.
Charlie Bennett’s achievements have left us all culturally
richer and wiser. He is a man with a profound love of
music and the sheer bloody mindedness needed to do
what many would say was the impossible. His step back
is a small one, as he joins his wife, Vicky, at her brilliant
Chipping Campden Literature Festival.
Expect more great things to come.
You May Never See Us Again - the untold story
of David and Frederick Barclay, impoverished
twin brothers who built a powerful secretive
empire before falling out over money and
succession. These enigmatic twins built one of
the biggest fortunes in Britain together and spent six decades
at the epicentre of British business, media and politics.
Author Jane Martinson, a freelance journalist & academic,
the presentation of her truly, madly, funny
memoir. A regular on the stand-up circuit
stages with comedy pioneers Ben Elton and
Rik Mayall, and TV screens with Dawn
French, Jennifer Saunders, and many others.
It is difficult to think of a comedy show that
Helen wasn’t a part of! This brilliantly written book is,
revealing, moving, sweet, sour, and unforgettable.
Award winning journalist Paul Caruana
Galizia tells the story of how he began
a quest to discover who was responsible
for his mother Daphne’s murder and who
stood to profit from ending the life of a
journalist whose courage and determination
threatened the powerful with the truth.
Secrets of the Museum: Court Barn at Christmas
Christmas in Chipping Campden has always been a
magical time of year.
For C. R. Ashee’s Guild of Handicraft, it was a time to
entertain the local community by putting on a play. Ashbee
particularly loved comedies and the revelry provided joy
for both the Guildsmen and Campden with the days shorter
and the weather colder. Soon after Christmas at the turn of
the New Year in 1905, the Guildsmen from London and
local Campdonians performed Shakespeare’s As You Like
It to a rapturous audience. The play’s casting was rather
literal - Ashbee recruited local shepherd Ron Haydon
to play Shakespeare’s shepherd Silvius, complete with
genuine shepherd’s crook!
Our ever-popular selling exhibition - ‘Christmas
Delights’ - is a hugely significant part of our calendar.
Our staff and volunteers start planning for the
exhibition sometimes up to a year ahead, contacting
local makers and going out to art and craft fairs to
meet them and find out about their work. We love
seeing what independent craftspeople are up to,
supporting their work and learning about different
types of craft. From ceramics and jewellery to art
and textile work, there will be something for
everyone showing in the museum.
This year’s ‘Christmas Delights’ will host 16 local
makers. As well as new stock from some of our
existing favourites from the Court Barn shop,
we’re also excited to welcome seven new or
returning makers especially for the
exhibition:
Sarah Davis stained glass,
Sue Bibby embroidery,
Tor Hildyard wire art,
Ruth Dodwell jewellery,
Selma Stagg jewellery,
Charlotte Sweeney
ceramics and
Tilly’s Cottages from
Louise Whiteley.
Today, as Chipping Campden switches its lights on for
Christmas and the shops begin to bustle with activity,
Court Barn, our museum which celebrates the Guild’s rich
craft and design legacy, is also busy decking the halls this
December.
Winter is a particularly busy time for our team, caring
for the beautiful barn and its collections. Rain and snow
can lead to plants growing on our roof, while the lack of
gutters means water rolls off the roof and makes our front
step slippy. We’re very proud to be able to take care of the
barn, removing weeds and sweeping our frontage.
management plan in place, so
we can keep an eye out for any
little beasts that might harm our
barn or collections.
Checking our collections
is also important at this
time of year. We recently
gave the Gordon Russelldesigned
cabinet in the
museum a good dust
ready for winter and
also have a regular pest
Once we’ve identified the makers’ work we would like to
include, it’s all hands on deck to make sure everything is
displayed beautifully against the honey-coloured Cotswold
stone walls of Court Barn’s West Wing. The barn is Grade
II listed so we have to make sure we don’t attach any
display materials directly to its walls. We have to be quite
creative about how we use the space!
Court Barn becomes a hive of activity during exhibition
set-up week with makers arriving to drop off their stock
and our volunteers kindly coming in to give extra support
by helping to coordinate and display items. Every year we
decide on a colour theme (this year is very festive - navy
and silver!) for our decorations.
Most importantly, we are really looking forward to our
annual volunteer Christmas party, where there is always
good cheer and mince pies a-plenty! We’re hugely grateful
to all our volunteers who do so much for the museum,
from welcoming visitors to helping with organising the
‘Christmas Delights’ exhibition. We really could not do all
of this without you.
Merry Christmas and
Happy New Year from
Court Barn!
TWINNING WITH
PONT-D’OUILLY
Save the dates - Quiz Night 17th February 2024,
Visits in school holidays 2024/25
During our visit to Pont-d’Ouilly in June this year our French
friends made clear they would like to visit Chipping Campden
in 2024 and welcome us back in 2025 during the school
holidays, so as to build on the new contacts being developed
between young people and families.
After seeing the highly impressive youth accommodation and
outdoor activities facilities available at Pont-d’Ouilly’s Base
de Loisirs we pencilled in dates for a return visit to this centre
for 25th- 30th May 2025, during the half-term holiday, when
the Base de Loisirs will be hosting Pont-d’Ouilly’s annual
Festival of the Ascension.
Since the June visit, educational co-operation between
schools is already taking off. St Catharine’s and Pont-d’Ouilly
Primary School have exchanged French and English reading
lists and topics and ideas for working together on videos and
correspondence.
Our programme for 2024 aims to broaden and deepen these
links, offer our usual warm welcome to old friends and build
for the future. Next year’s visit from Pont-d’Ouilly will take
place during the school holidays on 16th – 19th August 2024.
We plan to include a programme of community activities for
young people centred on the Cidermill Theatre plus a preview
of what the Base de Loisirs can offer Chipping Campden’s
young adventurers in May 2025.
We will be working with the Cidermill, our schools, friends
in Pont-d’Ouilly and other interested parties to develop this
programme in the next three months. And we would love to
hear from anyone that can help host young visitors and parents
next August.
If you would like to get involved or know more about Twinning
and these events – and/or if you can help host our visitors in
August - save the dates – and please contact:
Reg Pritchard
Please also join us for our next Quiz Night, 17th February
2024, 7pm for 7.30pm at the Bowling Club. Bring a team
(max 6) or come and join one. Tickets, £10 per person, include
ploughman’s supper. Bring your own drinks and glasses.
ST CATHARINE’S CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL
AUTUMN UPDATE
The first half-term was full,
with many highlights:
Year 6 pupils have taken their
‘bikeability’ lessons and you
may see more children wearing
red jumpers cycling to school;
A group of children have made
their First Holy Communion;
Children have enjoyed woodwind
and brass-themed assemblies.
A popular topic this half-term was the
bread-making in Design/Technology.
The range of colours, shapes, flavours
and sizes researched, designed and
made by the children was fascinating!
The aroma around the school of baking
bread was heavenly!
SPOOKY DISCO
Lots of hard work was rewarded with
a super spooky disco, organised by our
‘Friends of St Catharine’s!’
HARVEST & CAFOD
CURRICULUM
At St Catharine’s we understand that
every child is special and unique, with
distinct talents and skills. We cover a
wide curriculum and children enjoy
the varied diet! From Vikings to Forest
School, and glockenspiels to electricity,
you can almost hear the brains buzzing
as you move around the school!
We had a wonderful Harvest Festival
at school, with lots of joyous singing
renditions, including ‘Harvest Tango’
and ‘Harvest Rock’n’Roll.’ Chaplaincy
pupils led the school in prayers of
thanksgiving.
We thought about our neighbours,
locally and globally: Children brought
in non-perishable items for the
local Food Bank, and we filled our
shopping trolley; On a separate date,
our Fundraising Ministers organised a
‘Green Day’ where all children wore
something green and donated to
CAFOD. The proceeds of a cake sale
were also added to the money raised
and enough for an overseas mobile
health clinic visit was raised.
NEW CLUBS
The initial ‘Young Voices’ choir had
a wonderful first session. They will
learn several popular songs from the
last 100 years, from ‘Lambeth Walk’
to a Matilda Medley. The children will
perform in the ‘Birmingham Resorts
Arena’ in February.
Crochet Club has proved to be a
successful club this term - children
have developed new skills and had a
relaxing time in the process.
Chess has been another popular new
club and the top players look forward
to playing against some other local
players!
this year! It is wonderful to see the
older children sharing their expertise
with the younger ones. Speeches this
week were based on eclectic topics
such as ‘Victors’, Coco Chanel and
‘Food Critic.’
VOCATION
Our ‘Vocation’ theme this term
has been wonderful. Children have
considered what they think they are
called to do and thought about how
they can use their gifts for the good
of others. They made posters for a
school career fair, and the choices
ranged from gardeners, to lifeguards,
from pizza chefs to doctors and maybe
another 100 jobs as well!
Reception and Year 1 children visited
the ‘Play Village’ in Warwick for some
age-appropriate work-experience!
TWINNING
Our links with Pont d’Ouilly School
continue to develop with reading lists
and correspondence shared.
We are enjoying being part of the
group who are planning the visit from
French friends next summer holiday!
(16th to 19th August.)
THE LITTLE WAY
PARTNERSHIP
Many of you will know that we
have been working closely with
Gloucestershire Catholic schools over
many years. Our INSET training day
this term was the staff altogether at
one of our favourite venues, St Peter’s
Primary School in Gloucester.
The children are excited to have been
paired up as pen pals with classes
from schools across the county.
“The children from the school
who attended Remembrance
Sunday with the school
banner - behaved impeccably
and conducted themselves
beautifully both in church and
at the war memorial. A credit to
themselves and the school.”
DECEMBER
We look forward to the month ahead
and a chance to reflect and prepare
our hearts and school throughout
Advent-Tide.
In January, the local Foodbank is
sometimes less well-supported as
families make savings after Christmas.
Therefore, this year our ‘Reverse
Advent Calendar’ will be made up of
non-seasonal items.
Wreath- making in school one evening
has become a much-loved annual
tradition for parents; Christmas
concerts, parties and a special lunch
will end the term perfectly.
OPEN DAYS
Meanwhile, the next Bulletin entry
will share pictures of Y2-Y6 trip to
KidZania, a child-size city of job
opportunities in Shepherds Bush. Will
the children change their minds about
their vocations after the trip?
Several visitors have been visiting
assemblies enlightening the children
about careers.
REMEMBRANCE
We welcomed the father of one of our
teachers to Remembrance assembly
this year. Linked with our vocation
work, the veteran spoke of how his
military career began as an army chef.
Children laid wreaths to represent the
school community on both 11.11.23,
and again on Remembrance Sunday.
It was wonderful to receive the
following email…
If you are interested in securing a place
for your child at St Catharine’s, please
contact 01386 840677 to arrange a
visit. We are proud of every single day
that we offer the children, and every
day is an ‘Open Day’ at St Catharine’s.
Spaces are available in certain year
groups.
ST JAMES’ CHURCH REPAIR CAFE
NOVEMBER REPORT
As usual, our electricals team was busy all morning, and we were able to look at a number of radios, one fixed on the spot, the
on/off switch fixed, another needing a new transformer cable, and a small Kenwood mixer which needed oiling, sent away
working.
However star of the show perhaps this time was ‘Pippin the toy dog’ – a tiny stuffed toy of great sentimental value to the
family, left with us last time.
Here he is before – stripped down and looking very sorry for himself – and after - cleaned up and much happier. He is 26 years
old – and the delighted client told us that her 26 year old son, who was given this as a baby, is very unwell and she wondered
if having Pippin back and restored may help him with the memories of his Nan.
Not everything has a story like this but this gives us all a great pleasure and purpose in what we do
The same volunteer seamstress (a new recruit!) has taken on a hand made wool squares blanket, bought about 30 years ago
at a sale of work locally, again well loved but needing restitching.
We’ve had success with repairing a pepper mill before, and after spotting the story in the Bulletin, we were entrusted with
another – very much with a Chipping Campden connection also.
It was purchased from Robert Welch in the 1970’s, and needed a thorough clean down, the grinder had worked loose with a
broken retaining screw, and the hardwood handle was badly re-fixed with a household screw.
It is now a sought after ‘retro’ item and after several years ‘left on the shelf’ is now waiting a refill of pepper corns (we thought
the originals left inside might be past their use by date) and to be put back into use.
Not everything need be valuable – or indeed of sentimental value.
We were pleased to return a folding iron board which was almost certainly destined for the tip – re-welded and ready for use.
Secateurs and garden shears were sharpened. Two battery wall clocks were looked at – one a souvenir from Australia simply
needing it’s hands re-fixing. We can recommend local clock makers for more complicated older mechanical movements.
Our furniture restorer took away this rather nice late Georgian work box of
caddy shape – it’s gilt metal (ormolu) feet had been crushed by probably over
loading it and a bit of a repolish is needed before returning next time
Again, for larger and more complicated pieces we can recommend local
restorers.
The next repair cafe at the Church Rooms, on the corner of Church Street
and Calf Lane, is on Saturday December 9th, 10am to 12.30pm and then
in the New Year on Saturday January 13th Do come along, enjoy a delicious
selection of refreshments whilst you wait and a chat with like minded peoplewhether
you have an item to repair or not.
Pippin before
Pippin after
Robert Welch pepper mill
Would-be repairers - get in touch we’d always be pleased to add you to our team.
Of course as well as repairs – there is plenty of opportunity for repairers
and clients alike to enjoy the delicious cakes, coffee and tea – and all free of
charge as are the repairs (materials only at cost) – donations invited to cover
expenses.
Perhaps it’s a hobby, but could you put your skills to community use?
THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
THANK YOU!
Thank you to all our coin box holders for
your generous giving and Max Scott for
counting! Once again, the annual count has produced a
terrific sum of £2100, all raised on behalf of The Children’s
Society. Gift aid and the sale of Christmas cards will
increase this amount even further. We really appreciate all
our very liberal contributors. The number of coins collected
has decreased but, happily, notes and cheques are more
plentiful, and our level of giving has remained impressively
consistent over the last 5 years.
The Children’s Society has a group of young Trustees
who help hold the charity accountable and make sure the
problems of young people continue to be heard and taken
seriously. This team of young voices offer their own unique
perspectives and life experiences allowing very individual
ways of getting things done and help shape the world to be
a better place for this generation and others to come. We
are part of this wonderful teamwork. Together, the older
generations are enabling the young to make things happen.
How brilliant!
We look forward to welcoming you to the Christingle
charity. Thank you.
LENT LUNCHES 2024
The popular Lent lunches return in February and March next
year. Run under the auspices of St James’ Church, they will, as
usual, take place in the Church Rooms in Chipping Campden
and run from 12.15pm to 1.30pm on the six Tuesdays during
Lent. We are particularly excited to welcome three newcomers:
Chipping Campden First Responders, the North Cotswold
Foodbank and Broad Campden Quakers.
The full schedule is:
20th February Chipping Campden First Responders
27th February The Children’s Society
5th March North Cotswold Foodbank
12th March Friends of Campden Surgery
19th March Church Rooms Refurbishment Project
26th March Broad Campden Quakers
The format remains the same as in previous years: homemade
soup, served with bread and/or baguettes, then cheese and
biscuits, and finally tea or coffee with homemade sweet
biscuits. What is more welcoming, during the potentially cold
months of February and March, than a lovely bowl of hot soup?
Everyone who organises the lunches works incredibly hard to
put on a delicious meal, so do please try and support as many of
them as possible and be generous with your donations. Please
put the dates in your diaries now, or when you get your 2024
diaries at Christmas, and look
forward to food, conversation
and friendship in the warm
and welcoming surroundings
of the Church Rooms!
Further information about the
lunches and their beneficiaries
will appear in the February
The Bulletin’s
monthly columnist:
JB
Food security is our social security
TAKES A LOOK
AT LIFE
The list of things I don’t have in common with the much-lauded Greta
Thunderbird is getting longer. She has a point, but I’m not too jolly about
her tactics. This is odd when you only have to look out the window to see the
havoc the weather is causing. Waterlogged gardens are one thing, but more of a
concern is the vast number of fields without next year’s harvest planted. Across
the nation, for those farmers who were able to be ahead of the weather, there
is now the risk the seeds will not germinate but instead rot in the ground. Food
security is therefore a worry and without that, our social security is in jeopardy.
The seasons greeting towards the weather by our food producers has at best
been mild.
The aging Land Rover probably means I will fail all the tests to become a
Greta-‘ette’ or whatever the collective noun is, but if that saves me from being
arrested, I’m fine, thank you. Being mainstream as opposed to ex-stream is no
bad place to be as you get stuff done, without the potential to transgress the
law or annoying people by walking along the road at a snail’s pace or gluing
yourself to a train. This, when citizens are trying to get to work or to a hospital
appointment. Inconveniencing the masses has become the weapon of choice
and is not very welcome in a functioning democracy.
Regular readers will know I’m an armchair rugby supporter and during the
World Cup matches I laughed out loud when I heard ‘salads don’t win scrums’
I don’t recall who said it, if I did I would gladly give them the credit here, but
possibly it was in the context of the South African’s bomb squad, who make
some other teams front rows look decidedly, a bit peaky. Well done England,
who put in a great team effort and played better than most of us expected and
got the bronze accolade.
As the population is bombarded with peoples’ views about what we should and
shouldn’t eat, drive, wear and generally do, Gen Z (young people) are at risk of
making some bad choices. Alternative ‘milk’ is not milk and doesn’t give young
and the old the goodness for stronger bones and healthy teeth. Also, the science
is far from proven that switching from one thing to another ‘food’ will save the
planet. There is however plenty of evidence that retailers have a commercial
interest in developing these product lines as the margins are far better than on
proper (I mean traditional, obvs) produce. Because of shoppers being cashstrapped
you watch how this quickly reverses. In life, a balance of this and of
that brings both variety and the all-important nourishment to keep the body fit
and healthy. Balance needs to become a bit more acceptable and replace ground
occupied by the noisy few who given the chance would have us all teetering on
the brink of despair.
When you read this, the Christmas lights in the High Street will no doubt be
twinkling and we will be about to enter, what is for many, the most indulgent
few weeks of the year. This is often followed by a period of guilty diets, a rush to
join the ‘fat club’ or all efforts to run at more than a half snail’s pace, particularly
in my case! It must be said, I put in a strong performance over a yard but after
that the competent application of a combination of oxygen and a defibrillator
becomes critical, if I’m going up to buy the next round.
Season’s greetings and thank you for reading. See you on the other side.
ANPR REPORT OCTOBER 2023
ASTON ROAD, CHIPPING CAMPDEN
The ANPR camera became operational in March and so has
been operating for just over 6 months. It took 3 months for
the paperwork to be completed, but even with that delay the
camera has had an effect on speeding on Aston Road.
In March the percentage speeding was 45.2% but this has
reduced progressively throughout the months so that in October
it was down to 28.1%. You will note in the table below speed
reductions have been made in all the speed ranges quoted.
The Police are aware of the times they pass the camera and in the
coming months will be more proactive so hopefully reductions in
speeding will carry on the downward trend.
Clerk’s Report: TUERS Barriers have been installed by
the Baptist Church and St. James’ church gate on Station
Road has been repaired.
Temporary road closures:
• Station Road - level crossing - nighttime closure - finished
• West End Terrace 9th October to 13th October. National
Grid need to return to this location to complete works.
• Back Ends from 23/10/23 to 10/11/23 to allow for
essential water main improvement works by Thames Water,
Emergency access will NOT be maintained.
• Broad Campden: 8 - 10 November, Road from Southwest
of Hayes Lodge to Northwest of Apple Tree Cottage, -
drainage investigation work by GCC Highways.
Partnership working with volunteering groups:
• Flood elevation work for GCC Highways - volunteers
cleared The Cam, Sheep Street area and the ‘scuttlebrook’
trough on Aston Road. The group then went on for a third
consecutive weekend to tidy the vegetation growing in the
Cart Wash on Sheep Street.
• ‘Scuttlebrook’ culvert - as reported by volunteer coordinator
to Bob Skillern - GCC Highways. It became
clear that the culvert downstream was also heavily clogged
with silt and poses an ongoing limitation of capacity when
there is heavy rain. We believe that this is aggravated by
the small capacity pipe that was installed under the access
road to the new housing development. The inadequate size
of this pipe was challenged at the time of installation, but
36

not remedied. Could you make arrangements to clean the
culvert, and establish whether the pipe under the access
road is having a detrimental effect on the flow of water in
the brook? Bob Skillern acknowledges investigation work
required by GCC.
• Campden Society and the Cotswold Wardens volunteers
have cleared away some of the Himalayan Balsam identified
by the Water Works stretch of the Cam. They are awaiting
permission from landowners to gain access to the remaining
invasive weed.
• Liaising with Campden Society about a dead pine tree on
Aston Road. Highways have confirmed they will fell the
tree to ground level. Follow-up with Highways.
• Thank you to all the volunteers who have given their time
and knowledge. We can see how crucial the volunteer work
is to the community. Thank you.
• Reminder - Police drop-in surgery dates available for
October and November are on the website and social media.
Held in the community room in the OPS, ground floor
opposite the VIC.
• Parking Survey for Neighbourhood Development Plan
- if approved tonight there will be additional information
available on the notice board, website and social media to
promote when and how to expect your copy of the survey.
• Amenities - progressing gravestone wobble testing and
annual condition bench repairs. Request for quotes to ensure
best value for public money.
Traffic Management:
• GCC Highways will be asked to consider for Back Ends
either introducing a walking footpath or installing pedestrian
warning signs.
• Cllr LS will be asked to consider the viability of installing
EVC points in Back Ends and in conjunction with CCS -
front car park.
• Disabled parking bays - request the introduction of a new
bay to be located between OPS and Co-Op stores - also
request enforcement of disabled parking bays.
• ANPR Camera on Aston Road to appoint a replacement
volunteer co-ordinator to start January 2024. Someone has
been suggested as a suitable replacement.
• Station Road ditch o/s Hulland House - to request
Highways ask Thames Water to remove the waste left in
the ditch or arrange for the community gang to clear and
recharge Thames Water.
• The Sorting Office sewage leak in Back Ends remains
65s are paying Income Tax – that’s around a 10% increase
when compared to a year earlier. A combination of frozen tax
thresholds and rising inflation mean an increasing number of
retirees need to consider tax.
Usually, you will need to pay Income Tax if your income
exceeds the Personal Allowance. For 2023/24, the Personal
Allowance is £12,570.
As well as keeping the Personal Allowance in mind, when
managing your tax liability, you should also consider the
thresholds for paying the higher- or additional-rate of Income
Tax, which are £50,271 and £125,140, respectively, in 2023/24.
There are several reasons why more over-65s are paying
Income Tax, including:
• The cost of living crisis means some workers are putting
off retirement: High inflation over the last 18 months means
household budgets are under pressure. For some workers, it
may mean they’ve delayed their retirement plans. As a result,
more over-65s are likely to be working and paying Income Tax.
• Inflation may have pushed incomes above the Personal
Allowance: The rising cost of living may have increased your
income in retirement. For example, the State Pension increased
by 10.1% in April 2023 due to inflation, or you may receive an
income from an annuity that rises each year. Subsequently, many
retirees could find their income is now liable for Income Tax.
• The thresholds for paying Income Tax are frozen: While
retirement incomes may be rising, the Personal Allowance
has remained the same for the last three tax years, and the
government has frozen it until 2027/28.
If you find that you’re paying Income Tax in retirement, there
may be steps you could take to reduce your liability.
5 practical steps that could reduce your Income Tax bill in
retirement
1. Make use of the Marriage Allowance
If you are retirement planning with your spouse or civil partner,
you may be able to use the Marriage Allowance.
If you or your partner don’t use the full Personal Allowance,
you could transfer £1,260 of it. It could reduce your combined
Income Tax bill by up to £252 in the 2023/24 tax year.
The partner with the higher income must be a basic-rate
taxpayer to use the Marriage Allowance.
2. Use other tax allowances to boost your income
Depending on your circumstances, there may be other ways
you could boost your retirement income without increasing
your tax liability.
For example, if you’ve saved or invested through an ISA,
withdrawals are not liable for Income Tax, so you could use
your ISA to supplement your income from other sources. Or,
in 2023/24, you can receive up to £1,000 in dividends, which
you may receive from some investments, without paying tax.
3. Spread out taking your pension tax-free cash
When you access your pension, you can usually withdraw up
to 25% without paying tax. You can take the tax-free cash as a
lump sum or spread it across several withdrawals.
By spreading the tax-free cash across several tax years, you
may be able to reduce your tax liability even if your total
income exceeds the Personal Allowance.
4. Manage your pension withdrawals
If you choose to access your pension flexibly, you’re in control
of how much you withdraw. You can increase or decrease the
income you receive depending on your needs.
As a result, you could adjust your pension withdrawals with
your Income Tax liability in mind. Lowering your withdrawals
could mean your entire income stays below the Personal
Allowance or higher-rate tax threshold.
5. Make tax planning part of your financial plan
To effectively manage your tax liability, you may want to
consider all your assets. It might highlight how you could use
other sources of income to fund your retirement without
increasing the amount of tax you pay.
If you would like to discuss how you can manage your
retirement income more effectively, please get in touch.
TRAVEL WITH MERV
Another year over nearly and the world of travel has now,
thankfully returned back to near normal. The last year
has seen many of my customers travelling again some
even 2-3 times making up for lost time for sure. Virtually
every country has dropped travel restrictions, airlines have
most of their aircraft back in service, meaning frequencies
increased to all worldwide destinations. Some have even
upgraded their aircraft for newer, faster more sustainable
models. New products have also arrived where more airlines
have premium economy cabins as well as new business and
economy cabins too. Cruise lines have launched new ships
both sea and river, (large and small) into the market. This is
great news for everyone as there are more choices and often
more competitive prices available.
As the peak booking period of January and February are
just around the corner it’s a good idea to think ahead and
start planning your trips. Take advantage of early booking
discounts, deposits and if you have a favourite destination
or hotel then get in quick and ensure you are ahead before
availability goes.
If you are planning trips to Australia, New Zealand, USA,
Canada and South Africa it’s a good idea to book early
especially if there are seat sales coming up. Lock in the
prices and deposits available. Schedule airlines only
increase prices nearer to departure and very rarely will you
get a deal by booking late.
If booking other long haul destinations or indeed low cost
flights to the Med etc you will notice prices are lower when
booking early, especially for key dates like School Holidays,
Christmas etc.
Did you know that I organise and help plan group trips? I
have lots of experience in planning, sports groups, company
incentive and team building trips. I have just finished the
second of my two regular ski groups heading off to the Alps.
I can also help with wedding groups overseas, schools and
multi generational families trips too. A groups departure
doesn’t need to be 50 plus people travelling. Anything over
nine people will be classed a group departure.
Thank you to everyone who has asked me to help with your
travel plans and booked in the last year. It’s certainly been a
busy year and I truly appreciate it. 2024 is also proving to be
a bumper year too. I’m here to help you plan and remember
when you book with me, all of your travel plans are 100%
financially protected and I am with you every step of the
way from planning stage, whilst you are away and when
you return.
I am making my own return trip to India this month, which
was delayed by COVID. I am visiting new areas and will be
happy to share with anyone who is also planning a return or
indeed a first time trip to this magical country.
Wishing you all a very happy Christmas and New Year too.
Please get in touch by phone or email and I look forward to
helping more of you to get away in 2024.
MICKLETON WI
Our November meeting was our AGM
and was well supported. Members adopted
the reports of our president, secretary, and
treasurer who each reviewed the year.
Our president thanked members and the committee for
their support - members agreed to the existing committee
continuing for another year.
Our craft session then followed. Members set about
successfully making festive wreaths with foliage from
gardens.
In December members will have their Christmas meal at the
Kings Arms.
We start the New Year on Monday 8th January 2024 with a
talk by Glynnis Snowden on the Diplomatic Service Abroad,
starting with Bulgaria
New members are always welcome and we hope to see
some of you in January at King Georges Hall, Mickleton, at
7.30pm.
As the year comes to an end we take this opportunity to wish
you all a Good Christmas and a Happy and Peaceful New
Year.
THE MICKLETON SOCIETY
NOVEMBER MEETING
In one of the most challenging talks we’ve had Nick Scott told
us of his work as Anglican Chaplain to His Majesty’s Prison,
Long Lartin, just a few miles from Mickleton.
Married to the Rev Canon Katrina Scott, Area Dean for the
North Cotswolds, Nick had been both a priest and a teacher
before his appointment to HMP Long Lartin, a Category A
Top Security prison, with 589 male prisoners – all in solitary
confinement. He explained the duties of the chaplain in a most
dangerous environment, his visits to prisoners requiring him to
be accompanied by a prison officer.
Most prisoners are not very keen to see the Chaplain but
sometimes require his help or just to chat. Nick is trained as a
mental health assessor and always tries to find a way to be of
help.
An Anglican service every Sunday is open to all prisoners.
There is also a Roman Catholic service and other faiths are
represented. Christmas was especially difficult for the Chaplain.
It was not a source of celebration for many inmates, although
every prisoner was encouraged to enjoy a turkey dinner.
He explained the biggest problems in the prison are from drugs,
delivered by drones or smuggled in. Gangs also exist within the
prison walls reflecting those in the major cities.
Illiteracy is high and extreme boredom and depression common.
However prisoners can be helpful, especially to newcomers and
can act as peer mentors and have ingenious ways of occupying
their time from painting paper plates to carving soap.
The chaplain’s duty is also to support the 90 or so staff, although
few sought to talk about their work.
Nick had the attention of all present and was warmly thanked at
the end for his insight in one of the most difficult environments
for a chaplain to work.
Geoff Field
MICKLETON
GARDENING CLUB
The cold, dark nights have arrived and in the main, the garden
has been put to bed for another year.
Our AGM was held on 15th November, where we reflected
on the year and our achievements.
Our trips were well received and there are lots of ideas for
further excursions in 2024. Our Open Gardens event was a
lovely way to spend a summer’s evening. The gardens were
a showcase of how gardens, whatever the size, can be made
into beautiful spaces for us to enjoy.
Our annual show went down a treat in the summer with a
record number of entries. The hall was full of colour and
everybody enjoyed the day, despite the weather.
It has been a great year, with the meetings being a place to
meet people with a gardening interest and a chance to hear
about the wide variety of plants on offer and gaining an
insight into spaces to visit.
Our monthly meetings will resume in January, where
memberships can be renewed. We have kept membership to
£15 for the year which gives you free admission to all our
talks and we are currently negotiating discounts with local
businesses to benefit our members.
You can find more information on our website www.
EBRINGTON & DISTRICT
GARDENING CLUB
Our October talk was entitled ‘Modern Day Self Sufficiency
- a good life update’ presented by Sam and Kate Davies.
Our chairman writes... This presentation by Sam and Kate
Davies kicked off our winter programme of talks. This eagerly
anticipated talk did not disappoint. Sam took us through
their journey from allotment holders to running a two-acre
smallholding in Shropshire where they grow an amazing
range of produce and keep bees, chickens, geese and goats.
Sam is an advocate of the ‘no dig’ approach to growing and
can wax lyrical on the subject of compost heaps! Having not
bought supermarket fruit and veg for almost 20 years, Sam
took us through the crops they grow to ensure a full larder all
year round and how to keep and preserve them. He has raised
beds for convenience and ease of cultivation and ensures that
beds are rotated and are either cropped or covered the whole
year round. Their homemade compost is used as a mulch to
enrich the soil and the goats eat up those plants and stems
which cannot be composted. Enviromesh fabric is used to
protect crops from pests and weather damage.
Kate makes a wide range of preserves including fermented
foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi and kombucha. Using milk
from their small herd of goats, Kate makes yoghurt, kefir,
cheese and butter. Some of their delicious home-produced
honey was on sale on the night.
This was an interesting and inspiring talk which Sam brought
to life with his entertaining delivery. I’m sure there is a book
in there somewhere if only he can find the time to write it!
Our November meeting was an illustrated talk on ‘The
Orchids of Ecuador’ presented by Malcolm Moodie, the
President of Solihull and District Orchid Society.
His excellent talk covered orchids’ various habitats in
Ecuador and cultural points of interest including a visit to
Machu Picchu in Peru. There are over 300,000 varieties
of orchids world wide with apparently more waiting to be
discovered. He brought a number of unusual orchids from
his collection to show us. A fascinating talk.
EBRINGTON WI
November is traditionally the time for our
annual meeting and show, so we were busy
bringing in our entries for the show classes
and ensuring that all was ready for the annual meeting. We
welcomed the show judges, Mary Day and Jayne Martin who
began their deliberations whilst we got on with our general
business. Recycle Week 2023 would be taking place the week
of 16th-22nd October and we noted that Co-op in Shipston
and Aldi in Moreton had in-store facilities for taking ‘soft’
plastics’ and that we should check our refuse carefully to
identify items for these collection points. There was very
positive feedback for this month’s walk at Mickleton led by
Jenny and Tony Boyce. The weather was perfect, blue skies
and sun, warm enough to shed our jackets. From beginning
at the Grade I Listed St Lawrence Church to ending at the
allotments and community vineyard there was so much to
enjoy; scenery, local history, members childhood memories
and a delicious tea. Thanks to Jenny and Tony.
Letters of thanks had been received for the help the Institute
had provided for catering at recent village funerals.
We were reminded of contributions for the Christmas hamper
to be raffled at the December meeting when we will be
entertained by Paul Evans with humorous poems readings
and monologues. The President, Secretary and Treasurer then
gave their reports which highlighted growing membership
and engagement with many village activities. The officers
were willing to stand again for their respective posts as were
the current committee members. The show judges then gave
very useful feed-back on the craft, foliage arrangement and
cookery classes. They were thanked and presented with the
traditional Ebrington WI thank you gift of vegetable boxes
from Vegetable Matters. The Wheatcroft Cup, the Lucket
Cup and prize cards were awarded.
GARDEN NOTES FOR DECEMBER
Christmas trees will be in your local plant centre now: the advice is to buy early
to get the best choice, then keep it in a cool place until you bring it into the house.
An old book says it was traditionally regarded as bad luck to take holly indoors
before Christmas Eve. Quite right, I say: we always decorated on Christms Eve
afternoon, and I keep to that. Until then it is Advent, not Christmas: after that
Christmas and not January sales. My Christmas cactus is less disciplined: it
started opening flowers in the first week of November.
Christmas trees as we know them, are a custom said to have been brought from
Germany by Prince Albert. By contrast, holly and ivy in
church are recorded in mediaeval church-wardens’
accounts. Holly makes a good hedge, though
picking up dry leaves can be painful. John
Evelyn (1620-1706) has a holly hedge
four hundred feet long and nine feet hight
in his garden at Deptford, but it was
wrecked when Peter the Great, the Czar
of Muscovy, came to stay and thought it
exciting to be pushed repeatedly through
the hedge in a wheel-barrow (do not try
this at home). Ivy has a name for being
bad for trees: the weight of a large old
growth of ivy can bring a tree down. But it
is said to be good for bees and other insects,
flowering late in the year when not much else is
in flower: so don’t trim it until spring.
And did you know that I’ve just read, that ‘like an owl in an ivy bush’ means
someone has a rather vacant look, possibly from drink?
You should find a good selection of Christmas wreaths on sale (though it may be
wise to order), whether for your door or for a grave. But be warned that there are
tow-rags who steal wreaths from graves, to re-sell at car boot sales, I suppose.
So delay placing a wreath on a grave until the last minute if you can, after the
last car boot sale has been held and the selling of wreaths has finished. Oh dear!
What else? You should find a good selection of house plants, as gifts for others
or for yourself: some will tolerate a hot dry room better than others, so take
advice. You might see some bulbs still on sale: it is late to plant now, but not
too late. They’ll come up and flower when they are ready and then flower more
punctually the next season. Still on bulbs, the tradition is that shallots are planted
on the shortest day and harvested on the longest (but would they be ready then?
Depends on the season). You could sow sweet peas in a cold greenhouse or
conservatory any time in the last or the next month or two. Hard-wood cuttings
can be taken now. Peppers and aubergines are best sown (in a warm place) early
in the new year: they take forever to get going, like me in the morning. You
might find other seeds to start early: it is good for morale to feel that spring is on
the way. Low light levels may mean seedlings get rather drawn, so be cautious.
I’ll be back here in February. Meanwhile, happy Christmas and New Year!
