Bestowed by the Milken Family Foundation, the award recognizes outstanding K-12 educators nationwide for their excellence and leadership. Along with the honor comes a $25,000 unrestricted cash award. Milken Educator Awards Vice President Stephanie Bishop was joined by Missouri Commissioner of Education Margie Vandeven to surprise Lawrence at an allschool assembly. She is one of up to 75 recipients across the country who will be honored in 20<strong>23</strong>- 24 as part of the Milken Family Foundation’s Journey to the 3,000th Milken Educator. Hailed as the “Oscars of Teaching,” the awards will reach $75 million in individual financial prizes in 20<strong>23</strong>-2024 and more than $144 million invested in the Milken Educator Award national network overall. “We are thrilled to have the Milken Family Foundation recognize one of Missouri’s exceptional teachers with this award,” said Commissioner of Education Margie Vandeven. “The hard work that Leah does every day to use both creativity and data to drive her instruction and help her students succeed is so exciting.” Outside the classroom, Lawrence serves as a mentor to new teachers and as Hardin’s English language arts department chair. She has presented on a wide range of instructional topics, including at the district’s orientation for new teachers, the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals, and at Lindenwood University, her alma mater. Lawrence is a three-time Lindenwood University graduate, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English education in 2007, a Master of Arts in education in 2012, and an education specialist degree in school administration in 2016. Howell <strong>Mid</strong>dle rallies around breast cancer survivors Last month, Francis Howell <strong>Mid</strong>dle wore pink in solidarity with and to raise awareness of those fighting breast cancer. The entire student body went on a mission to garner support for Pink Ribbon Good, a nonprofit organization. Recognizing that many students have been impacted personally by cancer and wanting to honor several teachers who have fought and survived breast cancer, the students planned the Pink Out Pep Rally on Oct. 27 As part of the planning, students learned that Pink RIbbon Good exists to serve each person and family affected by breast and gynecological cancer. The organization provides free healthy meals, rides to treatment, house cleaning, essentials and peer support so that no one is alone in the fight. “I think the reality is that everyone has personal experiences or connections to cancer,” Principal Kirsteen James said. “I have experienced the loss of my grandfather and father-in-law, and my father is currently in treatment. Each year the school designs and offers special edition Pink Vikings spirit wear for students and families that wish to purchase and which 100% of all proceeds are donated to the Pink Ribbon Good nonprofit. Ultimately, the 20<strong>23</strong> Pink Out Pep Rally raised $2,500 for Pink Ribbon Good.
