The whole farm plan is another area of concern as more hurdles
are proposed for farmers just to access the basic tier one support.
Various audits are indicated for access to support, which will
have a financial and time cost to each business. Lack of agents
to complete the task could lead to further stresses and unless
communications from Government improve, some businesses will
struggle to get the necessary paperwork in place.
All of this is driving confidence to a lower level and needs to be
acted upon before it’s too late, and the necessary critical mass is
lost.
A meeting of the Scottish Red Meat Resilience Group in late
October had a presentation on QMS’s 5 year strategy and their
proposals to raise levy rates.
The rate rise proposed for cattle of 39 pence per head is modest,
but it is essential that this money is spent on marketing or
promotion through education rather than on their other projects.
The recent budget statement which sees £27million being
removed from the Agricultural budget is unbelievable. This is
on top of £33million sliced off last year, taking the total to £60
million.
This is even worse when government tell us they can’t help
because they have no money and the fact that this budget is ring
fenced adds to the anger. The explanation as to where it is, is at
best vague, and although a return of the funds is promised no
date is given.
A further question now would be, is the ring fence around the
coupled support budget more secure than the above ring fence?
I would like now to wish all a prosperous 2024 and look forward to
continuing to fight for the beef industry.
