Editorial
From residential homes to neighborhood centers, from residual
spaces to squares, from streets to parks: our spring releases
shine a spotlight on urban transformation. To understand the
ways cities can change, we recommend occasionally changing
your perspective—and scale.
In The Liebling Haus, we direct our attention to Tel Aviv and
take a closer look: this biography of a residential building in the
White City introduces a collaborative Israeli-German project. It
tells the story of the house’s construction for married European
refugees Tony and Max Liebling in 1936, its loving restoration,
and its new use as a public home. However, it is not only the
buildings of a city that require care and attention, but also the
spaces in between. Territorial Urbanism Now! argues for nothing
less than a paradigm shift in the evolution of urban planning and
a reorientation toward public and unbuilt spaces to withstand
climate change. The compact volume WohnWissen impressively
demonstrates that large changes start small. The book leads
readers on an entertaining journey through a much-debated
field with helpful entries such as “C is for the common good”,
“M is for money laundering” and “S is for single-family homes”.
And because we are not just passionate about cities, but also
about beautiful books, we are publishing our first-ever special
edition: Beton & Nicht Beton is for the last remaining fans of
concrete—hand-bound in the building material itself.
The Liebling Haus
Sharon Golan / Ellen Kugler /
Shira Levy Benyemini (eds.)
The Liebling Haus in Tel Aviv was built in 1936 to designs
by architect Dov Karmi for Tony and Max Liebling after
they fled from Europe. With its bright plaster facades,
deep balconies, clear proportions, and a layout tailored
to the regional climate, it serves as a prime example of
the locally adapted International Style that is typical of
the White City of Tel Aviv. From 2015 to 2019, the building
was extensively restored by Israeli and German planners,
renovation experts, and craftspersons, reopening as
a vibrant exhibition and community center. The Liebling
Haus is supported and funded by the German Federal
Government, the City of Tel Aviv, and the Tel Aviv-Jaffa
Foundation.
The book, published in three languages, tells the eventful
history of the structure and gathers detailed historical
materials about its architecture and residents. Current
interviews, an atmospheric tour by Israeli photographer
Yael Schmidt, and other documents showcase the new
use of the Liebling Haus since its reopening.
WohnWissen
100 Begriffe des Wohnens
Carolin Genz / Olaf Schnur / Jürgen Aring (eds.)
WohnWissen is dedicated to one of the most multi-layered conversations
of our time: that around land and housing. Short, incisive texts by numerous
experts explain key concepts related to the concept of housing. From
basic terms such as single-family home, vacancy, and loneliness to specialist
terminology such as the brownfield dilemma and new concepts of nonprofit
housing, this interdisciplinary glossary addresses discourses within the
field, political debates, and different housing needs, considering topics that
have thus far received little attention in the process. In this way, WohnWissen
offers a multi-faceted overview of the topic of housing as a basic need.
Territorial Urbanism Now!
Call for a Social and Ecological Urban Planning and Design
Institute of Urbanism: Aglaée Degros / Eva Schwab /
Anna Bagarić / Sabine Bauer / Jennifer Fauster /
Radostina Radulova-Stahmer / Mario Stefan / Alice Steiner
(eds.)
What if urban planning and design were to prioritize rather than merely
accommodate the unbuilt environment? Territorial Urbanism Now! calls for
a paradigm shift in the conception of urban transformation. It urges us to
favor sustainable systems in order to collectively tackle the challenges of
climate change. Until now, urban planning and design professionals have
integrated green and active mobility systems in the residual spaces available.
In the reverse approach envisioned here, these systems become structuring
elements of the territory, supported by a much more frugal built environment.
The contributions by urbanists, artists, architects, and landscape architects in
this publication come from research, practice, and teaching. Paola Viganò,
Eric Luiten, Eva Pfannes, Stefan Rettich, Susanne Eliasson, Davide Curatola,
Tommaso Pietropolli, Elena Andonova, Julio de la Fuente, Ward Verbakel,
Beatrice Galimberti, Lilli Lička, Hannes Gröblbacher, Johannes Bernsteiner,
Stefan Devoldere, Sandra Guinand, and Stefan Bendiks not only introduce a
much-needed paradigm shift, but also show us the premises for its realization.
Piazza Spinelli
Übungsraum für die Stadt
Sally Below / Christopher Dell (eds.)
How can city planners of the green building transition rethink and
reuse what already exists, rather than perpetually looking for something
new? What planning cultures does an open society need? What
points of collaboration are missing between city officials and local
stakeholders? This book highlights Mannheim-Käfertal as a compelling
case study to explore these questions, given its exceptional
transformation driven by the conversion of former military sites in the
neighborhood. In an innovative initiative, diverse stakeholders—including
Protestant and Catholic Church groups, a sports club, and neighborhood
associations—have joined forces with the city ad ministration
to forge a social and green center that unites old and new. Crossagency
partnerships, urban development, the creation of public
spaces, and interventions at a 1:1 scale are being employed as part of
a cooperative strategy for revitalizing existing buildings. Piazza Spinelli
demonstrates how complex urban environments can be reimagined,
developed, and anchored in the local community.
Christoph Mäckler (ed.)
Deutsches Institut für Stadtbaukunst
Now available in a student edition, the Handbuch der
Stadtbaukunst is a compendium of essential urban design
expertise. Using 150 examples from over 70 German cities,
it illustrates, analyzes, and compares a wide range of urban
spaces, courtyards, squares, and streets. The four-volume
work impressively documents the qualities of European
cities as described in the Leipzig Charter: beauty and
dur ability, mixed usage, social diversity, density and the
separation of public and private spaces. Editor Christoph
Mäckler builds on the textbooks of the early twentieth
century by Cornelius Gurlitt, Raymond Unwin, and Josef
Stübben and offers a well-grounded framework for city
Konferenz zur Schönheit und Lebensfähigkeit der Stadt 13
Die Stadtstraße
Christoph Mäckler / Wolfgang Sonne (eds.)
Deutsches Institut für Stadtbaukunst
City streets form the backbone of public spaces. In addition to serving
mobility, they provide opportunities for shopping, entertainment, going for
a stroll, and much more. They are urban spaces shaped and characterized
by the facades of buildings. In the face of today’s climatic requirements,
how can we design the city streets of the future to be distinctive and inviting
urban spaces?
For over a decade, the Konferenz zur Schönheit und Lebensfähigkeit der
Stadt has dedicated itself to fundamental questions in urban development.
The contributions in this volume present discussions from experts in both
the theory and practice of a range of different disciplines, as well as from the
heads of various German city planning departments, on how the functional
and traffic needs of city streets can be combined with their architectural,
urban design, and ecological requirements.
GAM 20
The Infraordinary
Guest Editors: Matthias Castorph / Julian Müller
GAM’s twentieth volume is dedicated to the search for the everyday in
architecture. Its title, The Infraordinary, refers to an artistic concept first used
by Paul Virilio and Georges Perec: In the 1970s, they introduced the term
l’infra-ordinaire to describe the habitual and ordinary —the opposite of the
extraordinary. With this in mind, GAM 20 aims to delve more deeply into the
unexceptional in architecture. Seeking to go beyond glorifying or emphasizing
the banal, the intention is to highlight stories of the repurposing and
refurbishment of existing architecture, as well as its day-to-day use. In daily
life, after all, architecture tends not to look the way it does in glossy magazines,
on the websites of renowned architecture firms, or on Instagram.
In aktuellen Zustandsbeschreibungen
benachteiligter Gebiete wird deutlich, dass jede Politik, die darauf abzielt,
Ungerechtigkeit zu beseitigen oder zu bekämpfen, gut beraten ist, spezifisch
räumlich-soziale – also territoriale – Blickwinkel einzunehmen und
somit auf die Expertise von PlanerInnen und GestalterInnen angewiesen ist.
Territorial Justice
Territorial Justice
In the face of growing inequalities in access to and distribution of resources,
territorial justice has (once again) become a current issue and task in the fields
of architecture, planning, and urbanism. GAM.15 – Territorial Justice is dedicated
to rural and peripheral spaces that have until now received little attention
from this discourse. The contributions in GAM.15—coming from perspectives
of urbanism, landscape architecture, regional planning, sociology,
and geography—show spaces in transformation and present ideas for what
forms spatial justice can take. Current descriptions of disadvantaged areas
make clear that any policy aimed at eliminating or combating injustice would
do well to take on specific socio-spatial—i.e. territorial—points of view, and
as such to rely on the expertise of planners and designers.
Das neue Denken des Materials Holz als hochmoderner und veränderlicher
Baustoff der Zukunft hat gerade erst begonnen. Eingebunden in
GAM.17 nimmt Holz in seiner Vielschichtigkeit
Transforming the Learning Environment
We have only just started reimagining wood as a cutting-edge, versatile
building material of the future. A component of environmentally friendly
resource cycles, wood demonstrates its innovative potential when used in
new technological developments and hybrid applications that are suited to
complex, modern architectural tasks. GAM.17 takes a new look at wood—at
its multi-faceted nature and architectural possibilities—and proposes building
and design concepts that fully utilize the material’s potential for a more
climate-friendly construction industry. This is further complemented by
a look back at the history of building with wood and the ideological entanglements
that have long stood in the way of the further development
of wood as a building material.
Are You a Model?
On an Architectural Medium of Spatial Exploration
Anna-Maria Meister / Teresa Fankhänel / Lisa Beißwanger /
Chris Dähne / Christiane Fülscher / Anna Luise Schubert
(eds.)
This book considers architectural models not as stable objects but as
a question: What is a model, really? And where in the design process
does it assume its powers or perform its tasks? Thirty essays respond to
nine pointed questions, discovering surprising affinities and interweaving
observations from diverse disciplinary, geographical, and scholarly
perspectives, all framed by an introductory essay and a dialog between
historian Anna bel Wharton and artist Thomas Demand. Are You a Model?
approaches models as phenomena and architectural tools without seeking
to determine conclusive answers. Compiled by a group of architectural
and art historians, historians of science, software engineers, architects,
and curators, it views models as an epistemologically diverse practice
rather than objects sorted by periods, genres, or materials.
The Icelandic
Concrete Saga
Architecture and Construction (1847–1958)
Sofia Nannini
“Many would consider a country without building materials uninhabitable.”
With these words, Minister of Industry Gylfi Þorsteinsson Gíslason opened
Iceland’s first and only cement plant in 1958. More than a century before,
Portland cement was first used as plaster on the walls of the Reykjavík cathedral.
At the time, most rural and urban dwellings were still being built from
local turf or expensive imported timber. Just a few decades later, Icelandic
architects, engineers, and masons were building their country exclusively in
concrete. How did this material become so popular that the first decades of
the twentieth century are referred to as “the age of concrete”? The Icelandic
Concrete Saga focuses on over one hundred years of Icelandic architecture,
construction, and technology. It traces the history of an architecture
in a constant struggle with material scarcity and the natural elements, its
outcomes intertwined with Icelandic politics, culture, and society.
Simply Green—
Die Stadt begrünen
Manual for Building Greenery
Hilde Strobl / Peter Cachola Schmal /
Rudi Scheuermann (eds.)
Do plants improve the climate in cities? How can greenery in architecture
help reduce urban heat build-up and pollution by fine particulate matter,
lower noise levels in the city, and enhance people's wellbeing? The Manual
for Building Greenery is aimed at citizens, architects, and developers alike.
It provides answers to frequently asked questions—from greening existing
buildings to greenery with new builds, from savings thanks to building greenery
to grants and subsidies, from practical tips on choosing the right plants
to the ecological impact on the urban climate. It's high time—and many
examples in Germany and around the world show that greened buildings are
already a fast-growing reality.
paysage contemporaine
française et allemande
Jürgen Weidinger (ed.)
This publication investigates differences and commonalities between
landscape architecture in France and Germany. A key question is the
degree to which contemporary landscape architecture is influenced by
the art of gardening and garden culture. French and German authors
pursue the traces of the garden in landscape architecture through a
variety of approaches, including biographical and scholarly reflection. The
book is aimed at researchers, students, and designers in the field of landscape
architecture, as well as to a broader public with an interest in this
specific facet of cultural exchange between France and Germany.
Sh*tscapes
100 Mistakes in Landscape Architecture
Vladimir Guculak / Paul Bourel
In an age of glossy architectural visualizations and slick photography,
today’s media is saturated with images of projects mummified in their
ideal, untouched, and unused state. Every design and technical publication
on landscape architecture tries to teach us how to do things based
on best practices. Rarely do we see a landscape project that has been in
use for five or even ten years. To counterbalance this status quo, it is time
to review and scrutinize the Sh*tscapes: typical mistakes in the design of
our public realm. This publication is a compendium of a hundred failures
made in the design, construction, or maintenance processes of urban
landscapes. Looking at these unsuccessful examples, the authors propose
simple and practical solutions aimed at preventing common mistakes,
predicting future scenarios, and averting or accepting failures.
The Dream – Play –
Challenge Project
Facing Up to the Crisis in Residential Living
Wiltrud Simbürger / Sarah Rivière (eds.)
Residential architecture is in crisis. In the twenty-first century we face
population growth, migration and displacement, shifting intergenerational
consensus, changing concepts of domesticity, and the disintegration of
traditional gender roles. The architecture of the spaces in which we dwell
plays an essential role in the face of such challenges.
The Dream – Play – Challenge Project sets up a different form of creative
exchange. It addresses how we could live in the future, extending the
inclusive approaches of intersectional feminism to move beyond trad i-
tional academic discourse. This publication shows how forty international
researchers came together to dream about future ways of residing, playfully
co-creating more vibrant and just spaces of exchange.
DesignBuild als Lehrmethode
Stephan Schütz / Kassandra Löffler / Julius Tischler
The DesignBuild teaching method represents a synergetic fusion of design
theory and practical construction. It encompasses the evolution of an idea
from development through to implementation at a 1:1 scale. As part of
the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s practice-focused architecture teaching,
a 42-metre wooden colonnade offering a spectrum of uses was created
as a new village focal point for the community of Rippershausen in South
Thuringia. The built result is an impressive demonstration of the cooperation
between students, lecturers, and various actors from within the municipality.
This handbook describes the DesignBuild method and illustrates the process
from the very first design through to prefabrication and the final realization of
the project.
Der Kornversuchsspeicher
in Berlin
Eine fotografische Langzeitstudie
Harf Zimmermann
Built in 1989, the Kornversuchsspeicher or Grain Test Silo was created as a
conceptually ambitious experimental prototype for the grain storage required
to supply the over one million inhabitants of Berlin. After being used by a
string of haulage companies, it was left vacant. However, the protected
monument has now become an attraction in the Europacity development
area opposite Berlin’s central station in 2023. Its spectacular renovation by
AFF architects turned the industrial structure into a mixed-use building hosting
offices, a gallery, and a restaurant.
Berlin-based photographer Harf Zimmermann, co-founder of the internationally
renowned OSTKREUZ agency, documented the renovation project over
the course of five years with his analogue large-format camera. Some of the
striking photographs of different construction stages lend the process the
appearance of an archaeological dig, while others give the impression of a
completely new construction project. The photo essay is complemented by
an extensively researched and generously illustrated article on the building’s
history by Hans Georg Hiller von Gaertringen.
Thomas Schütte: Houses II
Thomas Schütte
Thomas Schütte has been counted among Germany’s best-known modern
artists since he received the Golden Lion at the 2005 Venice Biennale, if not
longer. Thomas Schütte: Houses II collects architectural work by the artist and
is being published on the occasion of his solo exhibition Westkunstmodelle 1:1
at the De Pont Museum in Tilburg. Featuring numerous images and construction
plans, the book presents 18 projects completed between 2003 and 2023
for the first time, along with their construction stories. Schütte’s approach is
characterized by the use of a 1:1 scale to bring his designs to life. In doing so,
Schütte turns architecture into an artistic medium, creates new catalysts for
large-scale sculpture, and blurs the lines between sculpture, architecture, and
concept art.
cities, the financialization of housing, and the structural changes
occurring in the outer city. Rocketing housing prices have displaced
residents from inner cities and created a rent gap in outer
cities. Increasingly, municipalities, developers, and displaced residents
search for opportunities in the suburban belts. Changes in
demographics, densities, live/work ratios, and tenures are remaking
outer cities, rendering them less and less suburban. The book
examines these changes by looking at four key European cities:
Amsterdam, Berlin, London, and Stockholm. It is a first attempt
at understanding the three processes discussed here within one
comprehensive explanatory framework.
Doris Kleilein / Friederike Meyer (eds.)
Working from home, undertourism, online shopping: the disruptive
upheavals caused by the COVID-19 pandemic challenge architecture
and urban planning. New spaces for action are opening up, but
are they being utilized? From dividing traffic space fairly to urban
food policies, from new places for work and recreation to the question
of how communities can be oriented towards the common
good: Post-pandemic Urbanism envisions a near future and discusses
how cities and their transformative power can help to handle
this current crisis and those to come.
