Editorial 

From residential homes to neighborhood centers, from residual 

spaces to squares, from streets to parks: our spring releases 

shine a spotlight on urban transformation. To understand the 

ways cities can change, we recommend occasionally changing 

your perspective—and scale. 

In The Liebling Haus, we direct our attention to Tel Aviv and 

take a closer look: this biography of a residential building in the 

White City introduces a collaborative Israeli-German project. It 

tells the story of the house’s construction for married European 

refugees Tony and Max Liebling in 1936, its loving restoration, 

and its new use as a public home. However, it is not only the 

buildings of a city that require care and attention, but also the 

spaces in between. Territorial Urbanism Now! argues for nothing 

less than a paradigm shift in the evolution of urban planning and 

a reorientation toward public and unbuilt spaces to withstand 

climate change. The compact volume WohnWissen impressively 

demonstrates that large changes start small. The book leads 

readers on an entertaining journey through a much-debated 

field with helpful entries such as “C is for the common good”, 

“M is for money laundering” and “S is for single-family homes”. 

And because we are not just passionate about cities, but also 

about beautiful books, we are publishing our first-ever special

The Liebling Haus

The Liebling Haus in Tel Aviv was built in 1936 to designs 

by architect Dov Karmi for Tony and Max Liebling after 

they fled from Europe. With its bright plaster facades, 

deep balconies, clear proportions, and a layout tailored 

to the regional climate, it serves as a prime example of 

the locally adapted International Style that is typical of 

the White City of Tel Aviv. From 2015 to 2019, the building 

was extensively restored by Israeli and German planners, 

renovation experts, and craftspersons, reopening as 

a vibrant exhibition and community center. The Liebling 

Haus is supported and funded by the German Federal 

Government, the City of Tel Aviv, and the Tel Aviv-Jaffa 

Foundation. 

The book, published in three languages, tells the eventful 

history of the structure and gathers detailed historical 

materials about its architecture and residents. Current 

interviews, an atmospheric tour by Israeli photographer 

Yael Schmidt, and other documents showcase the new 

use of the Liebling Haus since its reopening.

reuse what already exists, rather than perpetually looking for something 

new? What planning cultures does an open society need? What 

points of collaboration are missing between city officials and local 

stakeholders? This book highlights Mannheim-Käfertal as a compelling 

case study to explore these questions, given its exceptional 

transformation driven by the conversion of former military sites in the 

neighborhood. In an innovative initiative, diverse stakeholders—including 

Protestant and Catholic Church groups, a sports club, and neighborhood 

associations—have joined forces with the city ad ministration 

to forge a social and green center that unites old and new. Crossagency 

partnerships, urban development, the creation of public 

spaces, and interventions at a 1:1 scale are being employed as part of 

a cooperative strategy for revitalizing existing buildings. Piazza Spinelli 

demonstrates how complex urban environments can be reimagined,

The Infraordinary

GAM’s twentieth volume is dedicated to the search for the everyday in 

architecture. Its title, The Infraordinary, refers to an artistic concept first used 

by Paul Virilio and Georges Perec: In the 1970s, they introduced the term 

l’infra-ordinaire to describe the habitual and ordinary —the opposite of the 

extraordinary. With this in mind, GAM 20 aims to delve more deeply into the 

unexceptional in architecture. Seeking to go beyond glorifying or emphasizing 

the banal, the intention is to highlight stories of the repurposing and 

refurbishment of existing architecture, as well as its day-to-day use. In daily 

life, after all, architecture tends not to look the way it does in glossy magazines, 

on the websites of renowned architecture firms, or on Instagram.

Territoriale Gerechtigkeit ist angesichts wachsender Ungleichheiten im 

Zugang zu und der Verteilung von Ressourcen (wieder) zu einer aktuellen 

Forderung und Aufgabe von Architektur, Raumplanung und Urbanismus 

geworden. GAM.15 – Territorial Justice widmet sich peripheren, ländlichen 

Räumen, die von diesem Diskurs bislang wenig beachtet wurden. Die Beiträge 

in GAM.15 aus Urbanismus, Landschaftsarchitektur, Regionalplanung, 

Soziologie und Geografie zeigen Räume in Transformation und stellen Ideen 

vor, wie räumliche Gerechtigkeit aussehen kann. In aktuellen Zustandsbeschreibungen

In the face of growing inequalities in access to and distribution of resources, 

territorial justice has (once again) become a current issue and task in the fields 

of architecture, planning, and urbanism. GAM.15 – Territorial Justice is dedicated 

to rural and peripheral spaces that have until now received little attention 

from this discourse. The contributions in GAM.15—coming from perspectives 

of urbanism, landscape architecture, regional planning, sociology, 

and geography—show spaces in transformation and present ideas for what 

forms spatial justice can take. Current descriptions of disadvantaged areas 

make clear that any policy aimed at eliminating or combating injustice would 

do well to take on specific socio-spatial—i.e. territorial—points of view, and 

as such to rely on the expertise of planners and designers.

Das neue Denken des Materials Holz als hochmoderner und veränderlicher 

Baustoff der Zukunft hat gerade erst begonnen. Eingebunden in

We have only just started reimagining wood as a cutting-edge, versatile 

building material of the future. A component of environmentally friendly 

resource cycles, wood demonstrates its innovative potential when used in 

new technological developments and hybrid applications that are suited to 

complex, modern architectural tasks. GAM.17 takes a new look at wood—at 

its multi-faceted nature and architectural possibilities—and proposes building 

and design concepts that fully utilize the material’s potential for a more 

climate-friendly construction industry. This is further complemented by 

a look back at the history of building with wood and the ideological entanglements 

that have long stood in the way of the further development

a question: What is a model, really? And where in the design process 

does it assume its powers or perform its tasks? Thirty essays respond to 

nine pointed questions, discovering surprising affinities and interweaving

perspectives, all framed by an introductory essay and a dialog between

Iceland’s first and only cement plant in 1958. More than a century before, 

Portland cement was first used as plaster on the walls of the Reykjavík cathedral.

local turf or expensive imported timber. Just a few decades later, Icelandic

The DesignBuild teaching method represents a synergetic fusion of design 

theory and practical construction. It encompasses the evolution of an idea 

from development through to implementation at a 1:1 scale. As part of 

the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s practice-focused architecture teaching, 

a 42-metre wooden colonnade offering a spectrum of uses was created 

as a new village focal point for the community of Rippershausen in South 

Thuringia. The built result is an impressive demonstration of the cooperation 

between students, lecturers, and various actors from within the municipality. 

This handbook describes the DesignBuild method and illustrates the process 

from the very first design through to prefabrication and the final realization of 

the project.

in Berlin

Built in 1989, the Kornversuchsspeicher or Grain Test Silo was created as a 

conceptually ambitious experimental prototype for the grain storage required 

to supply the over one million inhabitants of Berlin. After being used by a 

string of haulage companies, it was left vacant. However, the protected 

monument has now become an attraction in the Europacity development 

area opposite Berlin’s central station in 2023. Its spectacular renovation by 

AFF architects turned the industrial structure into a mixed-use building hosting 

offices, a gallery, and a restaurant. 

Berlin-based photographer Harf Zimmermann, co-founder of the internationally 

renowned OSTKREUZ agency, documented the renovation project over 

the course of five years with his analogue large-format camera. Some of the 

striking photographs of different construction stages lend the process the 

appearance of an archaeological dig, while others give the impression of a 

completely new construction project. The photo essay is complemented by 

an extensively researched and generously illustrated article on the building’s 

history by Hans Georg Hiller von Gaertringen.

Thomas Schütte 

Thomas Schütte has been counted among Germany’s best-known modern 

artists since he received the Golden Lion at the 2005 Venice Biennale, if not 

longer. Thomas Schütte: Houses II collects architectural work by the artist and 

is being published on the occasion of his solo exhibition Westkunstmodelle 1:1 

at the De Pont Museum in Tilburg. Featuring numerous images and construction 

plans, the book presents 18 projects completed between 2003 and 2023
