ST MARGARET’S College 

was one of 24 schools which 

played a part in planting more 

than 30,000 natives in the city’s 

red zone this year. 

They have been recognised 

as part of an outstanding collaboration 

with the Eco Action

Nursery Trust, and the wider 

community. 

Trust chair David Newton 

said while it was the trust 

which received the outstanding 

collaboration award at the 

Sustainable Business Network 

awards ceremony, it was 

the “multiple collaborations 

between the trust, the community, 

the 

council, the 

schools and 

organisations” 

which played 

an integral 

part in the 

win. 

Said Newton: 

“It shows 

us that we can’t do this alone 

and recognises the strength of 

working together.” 

The trust grows native trees 

and plants suitable for native 

bird food and habitats within 

the red zone, sourced from the 

Travis Wetlands.

survey finds 


CONNECTION, acceptance and 

community are just three of the 

most desirable things for Hornby 

youth. 

These were among the most 

prominent themes spoken about 

during a Hornby youth meeting 

last week, which was held at the 

Hornby Club and hosted by Te 

Whare Awhero Hope House. 

Said director Carey Ewing: “We 

hope this is just the beginning of 

the conversation. The response 

from the youth panel reinforced 

what the October Hornby Youth 

Voice survey results showed and 

a lot of common themes were 

echoed throughout the evening. 

“Youths are looking for 

interpersonal connections and 

interactions with a trusted adult, 

they want space to learn and have 

more opportunities, and they 

value being heard and listened to, 

which is an important aspect of 

their journey from childhood to 

adulthood.” 

The panel discussion included 

Hornby High School students 

and staff, youth workers, the 

Community Development 

Network Trust, the Greater 

Hornby Residents Association, 

police and the Graeme Dingle 

Foundation Canterbury 

representatives, as well as an 

audience of about 60 people.

ST ANDREW’S College band’s 

performance of the classic 

Led Zeppelin song Stairway to 

Heaven has gone viral. 

The performance at the college’s 

prizegiving has become an 

internet sensation, accumulating 

more than 150,000 views and 

4000 likes on Facebook. 

The rendition of the 1971 rock 

anthem was the main event at 

annual prizegiving, leaving the 

audience of about 3500 attendees 

in awe. 

The band, comprising more 

than 100 musicians, skillfully 

blended the sounds of 

the school’s rock band, school 

orchestra, senior choir, and jazz 

band. 

At the helm of the performance 

were St Andrew’s head of 

the music department, Duncan 

Ferguson, and music teacher, 

Mark Hodgkinson. 

Their guidance, combined 

with the talents of lead singer 

Grace Burnett, lead guitarist Mia 

Fraser, and acoustic guitarist 

James McIver, played a pivotal 

role in bringing the cover to life. 

Ferguson said he “didn’t 

expect” the amount of traction 

the performance would get 

online. 

“I sat down at breakfast on 

Saturday morning and suddenly 

discovered there were 12,000 

views, and I thought, oh, that’s a 

bit interesting,” Ferguson said. 

“Then, over the course of the 

weekend, it just got a bit nuts 

and, it’s exciting.” 

Ferguson said co-ordinating 

the band was “about a year-long 

process” but “wasn’t as hard as it 

seemed”. 

“The first time all the groups 

came together and heard it was 

just three days before the prizegiving 

where we had our final 

dress rehearsal,” he said. 

He admitted none of the 

students were that excited about 

the performance at the start of 

the year because “they were all 

quite young, and none of them 

listened to Led Zeppelin”. 

“But once they saw all the 

groups together, they suddenly 

caught the vision for it, and they 

then got quite excited,” Ferguson 

said. 

Stairway to Heaven was 

written in late 1971 by Led 

Zeppelin’s guitarist Jimmy Page 

and lead singer Robert Plant 

for their untitled fourth studio 

album (commonly known as Led 

Zeppelin IV). 

The song is widely regarded as 

one of the greatest rock songs of 

all time.

can see how these events have 

impacted our youth and can see

Patrollers ‘on 

the right track’ 


THE HALSWELL Community 

Patrol committee has now 

been formed and is focusing on 

getting a new patrol car on the 

road. 

A meeting was held last week 

at Te Hāpua: Halswell Centre 

to form the committee, after 

the Waipuna-Halswell- 

Hornby-Riccarton 

Community Board 

identified the need for 

more support in the area 

earlier this year. 

The patrol reached 

the minimum number

“We had a good attendance 

with a full room,” said Halswell 

Ward councillor Andrei Moore. 

“I was joined by Community 

Board deputy chairperson Marie 

Pollisco, Community Patrol

also present.” 

To get an allocation of Better 

Off funding for the patrol car, 

the community board requested 

expressions of interest be sent to 

Moore.

early in the new year and work

“For now, we are still really 

keen to hear from anyone who 

may be interested in helping out 

with the committee.”

Creating connections 

through crafting cards 

THE RICCARTON Card 

Making Club has been using 

the Upper Riccarton Library 

fortnightly on Friday mornings 

for more than 15 years. 

It’s a support group for those 

who have lost loved ones, a way 

to stay connected to the local 

community and a think tank 

dedicated to solving the big issues. 

“It’s much more than just a 

group that makes cards,” said 

group member Anne Davison. 

“We really enjoy the social 

aspect, as well as being creative. 

You meet like-minded people, 

and our conversations are so 

varied from where you use your 

Gold Card, to funerals, and 

happenings in Christchurch that 

others may be interested in. 

“We put the world to right. 

“Some of us live on our own 

now so come for companionship, 

and a couple come to keep their 

mental health in check, but most 

of all we come to meet with other 

people and as a small group, so 

we don’t feel overwhelmed by lots 

of strangers.” 

The best part about using Upper 

Riccarton Library, says Anne, 

is the room. It is important for 

the crafters that the room is very 

warm in the winter and large 

enough for members to spread 

out, with everyone getting their 

own table for their supplies. 

Members come from all over 

Christchurch, Selwyn and 

Waimakariri, and enjoy a coffee 

at the library’s cafe. 

Anne said when she retired, 

she felt a need to meet others and 

continue to learn aspects of card 

making. The group was the perfect 

opportunity to do just that. 

“About every fourth class, we 

will learn something new. The

native plants this year, 5,500 

of which were propagated in 

our own St Margaret’s College 

nursery with the support of our 

middle and senior students. 

“Congratulations to 

Eco-Action Nursery Trust, 

Õtautahi-Christchurch and 

Waitaha-Canterbury for this 

well-deserved recognition.” 

The trust was founded in 

2016 as a way to create learning 

opportunities for students by 

taking action in their communities 

to tackle climate change. 

Said Newton: “The schools 

are a fundamental part of the 

project, as the students learn 

practical skills, more about horticulture 

and the environment.” 

“They have expressed how 

they feel better about their impact 

on climate change through 

this project.” 

To date, the satellite nurseries 

have contributed 20,764 volunteer 

hours of planting. 

The sustainable business 

awards, which have been running 

for 21 years, recognise and 

celebrate success in sustainability. 

Next year, the trust is looking 

to double the number of plants 

grown to about 60,000. 

Said Newton: “We’ll just 

keep doing what we do – I want 

to get as many plants in the 

ground within the next 10 years 

before I die.”

Jump Jam Nationals 2023 

After the success of last year’s teams, we knew this was going 

to be a tough feat to match. Backing up a national title was 

daunting, but a challenge our Year 8 team was ready for. During 

our first competition, we performed as a team of 7, with one 

student out with sickness and one with injuries. In order for this 

team to compete at Nationals, we required a minimum of 12 

students to a team. With that in mind, we welcomed Maya, Ella, 

and Elizabeth to the team. 

With a rigorous practice schedule of three sessions a week, 

including holiday practices, they have consistently pushed their 

limits and strived for excellence. The countless hours spent 

perfecting their routines and refining their skills have truly paid 

off, as they continue to shine brighter with each performance. 

Competition time 

The Strictly Jump Jam competition is renowned for its high level 

of competition. What began as a novice grade to integrate more 

teams into the typical Jump Jam challenge grades, including 

costuming, formation, and routine changes, has now evolved into 

an elite grade. The scoring requirements for entry now meet the 

highest level challenge grade, making it even more competitive. 

Teams from all over the South Island gathered to showcase 

their talents and compete at this prestigious event. The level 

of competition was extremely high. Mr Brown and I were 

overwhelmed with pride when the students stepped on stage. 

This was by far their best performance. They had the whole 

crowd behind them, cheering them on, with Elizabeth, one of our 

yr 7’s getting a special shout from Brett (Mr Jump Jam) for her 

outstanding performance.

Halswell Quarry Park Adventure - Junior Park Rangers 

The highlight of our Term 4 has most definitely been the Year 0/1 trips to Halswell Quarry. What a 

fantastic programme run by the council. The tutors who delivered the programme were amazing - so 

knowledgeable and patient. Our Junior Park Rangers became bird watchers and bug spotters. They 

also learned about pollination, seed dispersion and decomposition. All big WOW words for the children 

to write about when they got back to school.

Ngāti Moki Marae visit 

Our ākonga were greeted onto the marae with 

a mihi whakatau. Our students did very well 

in showing respect during this time and Kaira 

Rapana our Kapa Haka Kaea, led our waiata. 

I was proud to see how well our students 

represented Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka. 

Our ākonga were then invited to mihi to whaea 

Fiona to which they did an awesome job. Thank 

you to Kaira and Kharmony who role-modelled 

for our Year 5/6 and spoke first. It showed a lot 

of courage to stand up amongst your peers and 

mihi to everyone. 

After having a quick morning break with some 

kai our students followed whaia Fiona into the 

learning space where our students learned about 

māhinga kai and the history of the area. Our 

ākonga commented much about the interesting 

stories and had many questions about the 

māhinga kai. It was really awesome to see them 

so engaged. They learned a lot about the local 

area and how it has been shaped over time. 

After having a decent lunch break with some 

rolling down some slopes the ākonga went on a 

hikoi following the creek down to Hone Wetere 

Church. The students had just learnt about the 

church and as they followed the creek there, they 

were able to spot a lot of the native plants along 

the way. This was a great experience for them as 

they also got to see some of the tāngata whenua 

who were buried next to the church. 

Following the hikoi our students then made 

their way back to the marae where they thanked 

and were farewelled by whaea Fiona. They then 

performed the haka to show our appreciation for 

the cultural experience they had given us. 

The senior Kapa Haka group performed at Tūhono on Saturday 25th November in the Full Primary School competition. The competition was tough, many of the schools 

having been in the competition for over 6 years or more, and this was Oakland’s first time competing at Tūhono. 

Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka had three amazing achievements in the afternoon: 

• We came 3rd overall at Tūhono, an amazing feat considering we had 

many schools who had won Tūhono in our category. 

• Our Waiata-a-ringa song Tenei Matou placed 2nd in the category. 

• Our Haka Tika Tonu was placed 3rd in the category. 

The Senior Kapa Haka group would like to acknowledge our amazing 

leaders who lead our group on stage, all of the tamariki stood up and 

performed to a packed crowd at the Town Hall, and Matua Steve, Mr 

Brown, Miss Booth, and Mr Meyrick for their time and effort in training 

the students. We are all extremely proud of our tamariki representing 

Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka on the big stage at Tūhono. 

We’ve already signed up for next year since we’ve had a taste of what’s 

coming....Watch out Tūhono, we’re coming for first next year!

forget to take a family selfie. 

5. Fill a shoebox with gifts for a child, wrap 

it with a bow, and deliver to the nearest 

community gift tree – check with your 

local library and label with age and 

gender. 

6. Have a yearly family, friends or neighbour 

outdoor games night with drinks and 

nibbles leading up to the big day – think 

Pétanque, hoopla, mini golf, giant chess, 

or croquet. 

7. Take a leaf out of Iceland’s traditional 

‘Jolabokaflod’ or Christmas Book Flood, 

and give a book as a gift on Christmas 

Eve each year – don’t forget to write 

inside the cover who it’s from and the

to watch a week before Christmas day 

and tick off the ones you’ve watched.

Just a little bit naughty 

Banana and chocolate 

chip mug cakes 

Serves 2 

Ingredients 

2 very ripe bananas, peeled 

2 eggs 

1 tsp vanilla extract 

25g butter, melted 

½ cup flour 

1 tsp baking soda 

1 tsp cinnamon 

pinch of salt 

½ cup milk chocolate chips 

walnuts, roughly chopped, to 

serve 

Cream cheese icing 

50g butter, melted 

100g cream cheese, at room temperature 

2 heaped Tbsp icing sugar 

Method

cheese scrolls that went viral during lockdown, Kitty 

Williams, is sharing more of her “naughty, indulgent’’ 

recipes in her first cookbook, Kitty’s Kitchen: Just a 

Little Bit Naughty. 

The city centre resident started out with a 

sandwich making business, then a food truck, 

followed by a small catering business before she 

discovered the power of Instagram. It enabled her to 

fully indulge in her passion for “naughty ingredients”.

put the butter in a small bowl. 

Heat in the microwave on high 

for 30 seconds or so, until melted. 

Add the cream cheese and icing 

sugar. Whisk until smooth then 

set aside. 

• Mash the bananas in a large 

bowl until smooth. Add eggs, 

vanilla essence and melted butter 

and stir until well combined. 

• Sift in the flour, baking soda, 

cinnamon and salt. Stir until well 

combined but take care not to 

over-stir. Fold in chocolate chips. 

• Divide the mixture between 

two mugs. One at a time, cook 

the mug cakes in the microwave 

for 2 minutes on high. (Every 

microwave is different so test after 

1 minute and go from there.) It’s 

better to be undercooked than 

overcooked – when you press 

the cake it should feel light and 

springy. 

• The cakes will be quite hot so 

it’s best to leave them for a couple 

of minutes to cool down slightly 

before icing. Pop the cream 

cheese icing into a snap-lock bag, 

or use a piping bag. You want 

to fill the corner. Twist the bag 

around until it feels tight, then 

snip the corner off using scissors. 

Do whatever design you desire, 

then top with the walnuts. 

Spicy prawn spaghetti 

with whipped parmesan 

ricotta 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

500g tomatoes, halved (I used 

vine tomatoes) 

1 red onion, roughly chopped 

4 garlic cloves 

2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar 

2 Tbsp olive oil 

500g ricotta 

150g Parmesan, grated 

juice of ½ lemon 

200g spaghetti 

2½ cups thawed frozen prawns, 

peeled and deveined 

1 tsp chilli flakes 

butter for cooking 

handful of parsley, roughly 

chopped 

handful of basil, roughly 

chopped 

handful of coriander, roughly 

chopped 

Method 

• Preheat the oven to 180°C. 

• Put the tomatoes, red onion, 

garlic, balsamic vinegar and a 

drizzle of olive oil in an ovenproof 

dish and season with 

salt and pepper. Give it a good 

toss then chuck in the oven for 

35-40 minutes. The tomatoes 

should collapse into a sauce by 

this point and the house should 

smell divine! 

• Put the ricotta, Parmesan, 

lemon juice, a pinch of salt and 

a glug of olive oil into a blender 

and blitz until smooth. 

• Bring a pot of water to the 

boil and add the spaghetti. 

Cook until al dente. 

• Drain, reserving a cup of the 

starchy cooking water. 

• Drain off any excess liquid 

from the prawns, then pat them 

dry with a paper towel. 

• Coat the prawns in chilli 

flakes then pop them into a 

hot pan with a knob of butter. 

Once the prawns are almost 

cooked (they should still be just 

a touch translucent), add the 

tomato sauce to the prawns, stir 

through, then add the spaghetti 

and the reserved starchy water. 

Turn off the heat and add all of 

the fresh herbs, then stir again. 

• Grab a large serving dish. 

Put the whipped Parmesan 

ricotta on first, then top with 

the prawn spaghetti.

The Renegade fires the opening 

shot in the new electrified 

Jeep range in the form of a

being reviewed in this road test. 

It is pricey for an aging, small 

and quirky looking SUV. Carrying 

the 4xe badge, PHEV and EV

The 4xe hybrid solution combines 

enhanced performance 

up to 177kW. This is a lot of 

power for a small SUV. Given 

its off-beat looks, it’s a performance 

wolf in sheep’s clothing. 

This impressive power output is 

achieved by pairing a 1.3-litre 

turbo petrol engine with an electric 

motor nestled between the 

rear axle, which is powered by an 

11.4kW battery that can be recharged 

while driving or through 

an external power outlet. 

While not the smoothest or 

sweetest sounding motor, it is, if 

nothing else a highly entertaining 

drive – a little less so when 

it runs out of battery power to 

hurry things along. A six-speed 

automatic does a competent 

enough job. The test vehicle’s 

transmission isn’t the most polished 

in its class, with a few more 

rough edges than you would 

expect given its lofty price tag. 

If you are looking for loads of

PHEV. The passenger compartment 

design is neat, but a bit 

fussy looking and has a bit too 

much hard plastic trim on show 

for a vehicle in this price bracket. 

For a small SUV this one 

makes a big play for the safety 

tech high ground with standard 

features that include Full LED 

headlights, Forward Collision, 

Lane Departure Warnings and 

Traffic-Sign Recognition. Also 

making the safety cut for this 

model is Blind Spot Detection, 

Park View Rear Backup Camera 

with dynamic grid lines, and 

Keyless Go. 

Handling is safe and predictable 

while body roll in faster 

cornering is well contained. 

Generally the test vehicle felt 

as well-planted as much larger 

vehicles across a variety of surfaces. 

There is just enough road 

feel to keep you connected and 

involved in the steering action. 

Suspension noise in low speed 

around-town driving, especially 

when travelling over poor road 

surfaces, isn’t as well suppressed 

as it should be for small SUV 

with an almost $70k asking price 

on its head. 

My off-road rambling wasn’t 

extensive and limited to a couple 

of modest creek crossings and 

a similar number of some farm 

tracks that offered up a few steep, 

short, sharp and well-weathered 

gradients to test the Renegade’s 

mettle. These challenges were 

easily dispatched, and gave me 

a timely reminder of why Jeep 

has been an off-road champ for 

decades.
