Welcome
you back—to the New Smyrna Beach Area.
The appeal of our lovely town goes far
deeper than our 17 miles of white sand
cuisine, a nationally recognized arts
scene, beloved hotels, and historical ruins
are just the beginning of the adventure.
With the ocean on one side, the Intracoastal
Waterway on the other, and all kinds of
exciting sustainability efforts in between,
our cozy city offers the perfect getaway—
whether you’re interested in relaxing on
Edgewater
Experience the slow pace
of life by the river’s edge.
True to its name, this city just south of New
Smyrna Beach lies along the edge of the Indian
River, putting great fishing and spectacular
views right at your doorstep. It’s no surprise
that legendary boat company Boston Whaler
recently expanded its headquarters here, or
that this has become the epicenter of the area’s
blueways. Launch from Menard-May Park to
explore these trails; paddle around mangrove
islands to see pelicans, herons, and
other birds. Go angling for redfish with a local
charter. Then dine on fresh fish at hot spots
like JC’s Riptides and Elliott’s Roadside Grill.
If you’re a surfer or would like to learn, get
stoked! The PerfectSwell® Edgewater is
coming soon. The facility will feature a worldclass
PerfectSwell® Surf Pool and will have a
beachfront and cabanas to relax. There will be
a full-size surf-inspired restaurant and lounge,
plus a lunch area, a retail surf shop, a surf
training facility, clubhouse, meeting rooms,
cabana, and day lounge areas.
Oak Hill
There’s something fishy here,
and that’s just the point.
World-class fishing attracts anglers to this
small city south of New Smyrna Beach, and many
head straight for Mosquito Lagoon. Cast for
monster trout and year-round redfish; to add a
taste of Old Florida, stay in a bungalow at one
of the fish camps. Explore the ancient past at
Seminole Rest, which features prehistoric shell
mounds and two turn-of-the- 20th- century
buildings. Then bring past and present together
at Goodrich Seafood, which began as a retail
fish shop back in 1910 and today serves up
mouthwatering po’ boys, oysters, fresh fish,
and delicacies like fried alligator.
Serenity, nature, and some down-home Florida cooking
A Place For Food Lovers
Author: Julekha Dash
The New Smyrna Beach Area has long lured
surfers and wildlife watchers in search of the
perfect wave and a glimpse of bottlenose
dolphins. Now, the word is getting out that the
A1A towns deliver fresh local seafood bursting
with local and international flavors, making
them a food lover’s paradise. The settings are
equally impressive, with lush gardens and
expansive decks that take advantage of the
area’s ample waterways.
RELAX WITH FRIENDS
Enjoy a fresh seafood feast and a
delicious Napa Cab at
Corkscrew Bar and Grille
The main thoroughfare in New Smyrna Beach,
Flagler Avenue, is teeming with boutiques,
art galleries and cafes to fill you up after a
long day of shopping and people watching.
Located a few blocks from the water,
Third Wave Cafe and Wine Bar relies on local
farms for its produce and serves wild-caught,
sustainable fish and shrimp. Mediterranean
flavors shine in dishes like the roasted
octopus with Spanish rice and Za’atar-dusted
hummus, best enjoyed on the verdant patio.
Head to the other end of Flagler to find the
pink beachfront landmark, the Breakers
Ocean Front Restaurant and Bar. Grab a bar
stool along the window facing the ocean and
watch the Atlantic waves while enjoying one
of the more than dozen burgers (including
the veggie kind).
Head a mile south to relive your childhood
dreams of climbing into a treehouse at
Norwood’s Restaurant and Treehouse Bar.
Order the seafood pot pie, a creamy mix
of scallops, crab, fish, and shrimp, topped
with puff pastry. Vegetarians won’t go
HIKE hungry THE here, SEMINOLE with dishes REST like pimiento mac
Historic and cheese Site. Canaveral and zucchini bread served with
National Seashore.
local honey. After the sun sets, string lights
illuminate the tree branches for a truly
magical evening.
Just west across Indian River North, diners
head to Outriggers Tiki Bar & Grille for the
day’s fresh-caught Florida fish, tacos, bowls
and raw bar. They pair well with the zombies
and mai tais, best enjoyed on the wraparound
patio offering a view of the marina and river.
Head to the historic, tree-lined streets of
Canal Street for farm-to-table Southern fare
at General Public House. Their seafood
cake is made with lobster and shows up
on the daily appetizer menu and as a
hollandaise-drenched star of the Sunday
brunch menu. Fans of the sweeter side
can opt for the Cap’N Crunch French toast.
Offering something for everyone, Fysh Bar
& Grill fuses Italian, Japanese, Caribbean and
American flavors in Port Orange, 15 minutes
north of New Smyrna Beach. Hawaiian poke,
Asian-inspired shrimp tacos, Caribbeanstyle
conch fritters, and a dedicated sushi
menu are just some of the offerings you can
enjoy on the rooftop bar with views of
the Halifax River.
More enticing food awaits Down Under…no
not Australia. The area under the Dunlawton
Bridge next to the Halifax River, known as
Down Under, has become a popular eating
and drinking destination. Fill up on sustainable
whitefish tacos, burgers and burritos
at Jimmy Hula’s, a surfing-themed Florida
favorite. Order a plate of fried seafood or
ribs at Our Deck Down Under, where the
outdoor space takes in views of the bridge
and arriving boats. If you’re lucky, you might
see a bobbing dolphin or two to round out
the perfect day by the water.
Sipping tropical drinks while watching the
places to do that in the New Smyrna Beach
Area. But you’ll also find craft breweries, wine
Begin at one of the area’s premier
bao buns, spring rolls and sushi for dinner
Fans of frozen drinks and margaritas
can also get their fill down the street at
Flagler Tavern, a bustling, two-story mainstay
with outdoor seats facing Flagler. Drinking with a
group? Order the Fish Bowl, a rum, curacao and
pineapple cocktail garnished with Swedish fish
and served in a souvenir fish bowl. For a more
intimate experience, head to the upstairs speakeasy,
The Bounty, where bartenders serve Old
Fashioneds, Sazeracs and other classic cocktails
in a unique setting that blends vintage and nautical
decor.
Another great spot for cocktail lovers, Sugar
It’s worth the 20-minute drive south to the
family-owned waterfront seafood shack, Oak
Hill’s Goodrich Seafood & Oyster House, where
you can slurp oysters while enjoying a mango
bellini or tequila sunrise at the tiki bar. Or enjoy
Another laid-back destination for wine lovers
awaits in the Canal Street Historic District.
Crimson House serves a variety of red, white,
sparkling and rosé wines in a former historic
home. Sip them on the porch or on the relaxed
patio where wine barrels double as tables.
Beer lovers can order a flight to sample the dozen
or so beers from New Smyrna Beach Brewing
Company. The rotating offerings may include a
Latte Stout brewed with coffee beans, a fruity New
Starting as a wine club, SoNapa Grille now
celebrates the wine and food of Napa Valley.
The vino list pulls from some of the best known
brands in wine country and includes everything
from buttery chardonnays to bold cabernets —
on a two-hour guided kayak tour through
Mosquito Lagoon with a Viking Eco Tours’ wildlife
conservationist. Learn how comb jellies and
plankton light up the water while searching for
dolphins, manatees, and green sea turtles.
Smyrna Dunes Park, a 184-acre park with
views of the Atlantic Ocean, Indian River, and
Ponce de Leon Inlet, offers beach access,
fishing, and views from boardwalks and
more than 2 miles of elevated boardwalk
are wheelchair accessible and pet friendly.
Edgewater’s Riverwalk, 3.5 miles along the
Intracoastal Waterway, and SUN Trail, 1.5
miles and part of the St. Johns River to
Sea Loop bike path, are perfect for biking,
walking, and running. Burn off extra energy
at Whistle Stop Park: The skate park,
splash pad, playground, and basketball
and tennis courts will keep families busy.
People, land and water.
Florida’s history is rich with stories about
the people who came before us. Several
prehistoric shell mounds, attributed to the
native tribe Timucuan, are preserved at
Seminole Rest Historic Site. Art, collectables,
photographs, and an Underground
Railroad Quilt honor the contributions of
past Floridians at the Mary S. Harrell Black
Heritage Museum in New Smyrna Beach.
There’s more to explore
beyond the shore
Author: Kinsey Gidick
Florida has plenty of busy beach towns. But
if you prefer a laid-back coastal vacation
where you can experience nature on two
feet or two wheels, consider the five-community-strong
area of New Smyrna Beach,
just an hour’s drive from Orlando. Thanks to
significant efforts from cycling advocates,
this area of Florida is a bike rider’s dream,
with as many paved and natural trails as
beautiful beaches. But even without a helmet
and two wheels, New Smyrna Beach’s
courses, many wheelchair accessible, invite
every visitor to opt outside.
The NSB Outdoor Trail is a great place to
start to get a lay of the land. The fifty miles
of paths and elevated boardwalks overlook
dunes, allowing pedestrians to enjoy eight
stops along the way. Rest or enjoy a picnic
at Grayce K. Barck North Beach Community
Park, a stunning natural beachfront property.
Alternatively, get a hands-on look at the
Indian River Lagoon’s ecological diversity
by stopping at the Marine Discovery Center
during your excursion.
E-bike enthusiasts will also find a warm
welcome in the New Smyrna Beach Area.
Electric bikes are ideal for tooling around the
coastal community. But if you’re hunting for
a rich array of wildlife, cruise off the main
drag to the Doris Leeper Spruce Creek
Preserve. This vast 1,637-acre park has
miles of well-marked mountain biking trails
to scout various estuary species and a shell
midden. The pile of shells was constructed
over 1,000 years ago by indigenous peoples
of the St. John’s culture.
For a more family-friendly path better suited
to tiny feet, hike over to Eldora Hammock
Trail. The 1/2-mile route is a shaded
hammock area perfect for running, playing,
and maybe even spotting an armadillo.
Casual bike riders and serious cyclists
alike will find something to appreciate in
the East Central Regional Rail Trail, the
most extended rail-to-trail path in the state.
This 52-mile ride connects Volusia (home of
New Smyrna Beach) with Brevard County.
Close out your walk or ride with a visit to
Smyrna Dunes Park. Located on the tip of
an inlet, this handicap accessible spot for
visitors and locals provides sweeping views
and close encounters with shorebirds and
gopher tortoises.
When it’s time to pedal home to a hotel or
Airbnb, you’ll find an equally walkable and
bikeable community to greet you and reward
you with stunning coastal views and some of
the best seafood in the country.
9 Great Excuses for
Spending Your Entire
New Smyrna Beach Area
Vacation in the Sunshine
Author: Kinsey Gidick
For most visitors, the chance to spend an
entire vacation under the sun is one of the
biggest reasons for booking a trip to Florida.
But in New Smyrna Beach, outdoor activities
extend far beyond sunbathing (although that
pastime is fully endorsed here as well). In
this off-the-beaten path Florida destination,
you can while away the hours outside in any
number of fashions, from water sports to eco
tours.
Naturally, New Smyrna Beach’s 17-miles of
crystal coastline are the main attraction.
One could spend hours soaking up the stunning
Atlantic views. But when it’s time for a
sun-break, why not explore North America’s
most biologically diverse estuary, the Indian
River Lagoon? Viking EcoTours is a family-run
operation dedicated to exposing people to
the rich biodiverse playground that is New
Smyrna Beach. And there’s no more whimsical
way to experience it than on the company’s
Bioluminescent Kayak Tour. Paddle
along the Indian River while marine dinoflagellate
light up below you giving your cruise
a magical glow.
Surfing is also a wildly popular New Smyrna
Beach pursuit thanks to swells considered
the most consistent surf break in Florida.
BYOB—bring your own board, or visit any
number of local surf shops to get outfitted.
the Indian River Lagoon is a 156 miles aquatic
wonderland and the Marine Discovery Center
works to bring its majesty and magic to
people through lectures, hands-on workshops,
field trips, and camps.
All the action isn’t limited to the horizon.
In-shore anglers will be rewarded with snook,
trout, and black drum right off Smyrna
Dunes Park Fishing Pier. However, the big
catch on many people’s minds is tarpon, the
silver king of the Florida coast. New Smyrna
Beach also calls itself “The Redfish Capital
of the World,” and the Indian River Lagoon is
the best place to cast them.
New Smyrna Beach’s rich biodiversity is
better understood with a visit to the Marine
Discovery Center, a must-visit for travelers
with children. Home to some 4,000 species,
If standup paddleboarding is more you
speed, head to Bird Rookery Paddle Blueway
Trail for a lowkey ride. Glide through another
worldly mangrove forest on this 2.9-mile
trail. For more advanced paddle boarders,
navigate oyster beds and sandbars trekking
across the Intracoastal waterway on the
2.6-mile Brown’s Bay trail.
In New Smyrna Beach, the opportunities to
play outside are endless. Just pack the SPF,
and the area’s outdoor outfitters will take
care of the rest.
Named one of the best surf towns in America
by SURFER magazine, New Smyrna Beach is
one of Florida’s top surfing destinations. A
favorite for its consistent waves, visitors might
even surf alongside pros like Kelly Slater and
Lisa Anderson. With popular beaches like
Smyrna Dunes Park and Bethune Beach
Park among the top local spots, surfers of
any skill level will find a place to catch a wave.
THE NEW SMYRNA BEACH
MUSEUM OF EAST COAST SURFING
The museum opened in 2014 inside the
New Smyrna Beach Museum of History,
this unique space features extensive
displays of surfing memorabilia like
surfboards, surf art (some created by local
Jimmy Lane), and photos documenting
the area’s surfing history. This is a great
place to visit to catch the vibe of the local
THE LOCAL COMPETITION
New Smyrna Beach is home to two surf
clubs–the Smyrna Surfari Club, which is
one of the oldest in the world, and the NSB
competitions, too. Other competitions include
the Southeast Volusia Chamber Surf Contest,
the Toyota USA Surfing Prime Surfing Series,
the NSSA Competition, and the Gnarly Charley
Surf Series for kids under 16. There’s the Mike
Martin Pro event, the Southeastern Regional
Championships, and others, so whether you
want to compete or be a spectator, you have
plenty of options.
JIMMY LANE
A local legend, Jimmy Lane is behind the
Jimmy Lane Surfing Academy, one of NSB’s
oldest and most respected surf schools,
founded almost 40 years ago after Lane
retired from the pro circuit. Lane’s surf camp
programs and coaching have led participants
to become pros themselves–some graduates
even return to teach with Lane. He’s also a
certified surfing judge and an artist who has
painted thousands of surfboards and murals
in the local community and beyond. An
active member of the local community, he
is especially involved with The New Smyrna
Beach Museum of East Coast Surfing at the
New Smyrna Beach Museum of History.
SURFIN’ NSB
Offering private and group lessons, Surfin’ NSB
is owned and operated by Marcie Baldwin, an
East Coast Surfing and a United States Surfing
Champion. She acquired her Captain’s license
then sailed the world on charter and racing
boats. She also holds a BA in History from the
University of Florida. She has been teaching
surfing for 15 years and requires that each of
her instructors have at least 15 years surfing
experience. www.surfinnsb.com
NICHOLS SURF SHOP
New Smyrna’s oldest surf shop is Nichols,
which opened its doors on Flagler Avenue in
1974. Brothers Dan and Dave Nichols began
making surfboards in the 1960s and started
the area’s first surf school. Their offerings not
only include surfboard making and repair, but
surf lessons and surf camps, surf gear, beach
rentals, and kayak and SUP eco tours. www.
With a local surfing scene including top notch
instructors, trendy surf shops, world-renowned
surfing events, even a surfing exhibit, it’s easy
to see why New Smyrna Beach is such an
acclaimed surfing destination, and one that
should be on every surfer’s must-visit list.
For New Smyrna Beach, the capstone for the
year is the holiday season, when you can look
for gifts at the Annual Flamingo Follies Holiday
Art Show, where over 120 crafters and artisans
set up along Flagler Avenue. It’s also the
perfect season to gather a group of friends to
shop and dine as you join in the festivities at
Ladies’ Night Out. Supporting unique boutiques
and locally owned restaurants is a wonderful
activity to get you into the holiday spirit.
Of course, when planning an event-centric visit
to New Smyrna Beach, there’s plenty for you
to do, whether you come solo, plan a trip with
friends, or bring the family on an annual trek.
Add activities like taking an eco-tour or learning
how to manage the waves at surf school.
Visit the Atlantic Center for the Arts, take in a
show at Little Theatre, or climb the 203 steps
at Ponce Inlet Lighthouse, where you’ll be
rewarded with stunning views of the area.
No matter what season you plan to visit, join the
Flagler Avenue Wine Walk, held on the fourth
Saturday of each month. Strolling the historic
street is a treat, and the walk is a delightful way
to sample different varietals while getting a true
taste of the town. Before the event, schedule a
sea-to-table dining experience at one of the area’s
many restaurants for the ideal complement.
Whether you prefer a sea-centric vacation filled
with eyeing the relaxing sunset and experiencing
the area’s wine scene or want an adventure-filled
time interspersed with dining on
freshly caught sea fare, New Smyrna Beach
has something to offer every type of traveler.
Sustainability
Along with serving up icy platters of oysters on
the half-shell, local restauranteurs pass along
the good vibes. Through an innovative local
program, the shells of shucked oysters are
collected and used to build up vital ocean reefs.
Each delivery of shells is part of
something bigger—a community-wide focus on
sustainability in New Smyrna Beach Area.
The “Shuck and Share” program is coordinated
by the Marine Discovery Center in New Smyrna
Beach to return shucked oyster shells to the
ocean. The busy, nonprofit center also offers
daily eco-tour boat excursions in the Indian
River Lagoon’s North Causeway as part of
its mission to educate about and preserve
the aquatic biosphere. (Its myriad of marine
scientific study and programming also includes
shoreline restoration and water-quality projects,
and surveys of sea grass and horseshoe crabs.)
CARE
EVERY OYSTER SHELL COUNTS
Through “Shuck and Share,” area restaurants
are able to dispose of shucked oyster shells at
the Center, instead of adding to the trash and
local landfills. Returned to tidal saltwater, the
oyster shells help keep the water clean, stabilize
shorelines and create growing communities for
living oysters.
ECO ACTION. FOR THE BEACHES & BAYS.
Recycling shells is just one of the ways that
local businesses, organizations, and other
community partners in New Smyrna Beach
are working toward more sustainable travel
and tourism. The coast draws us all here,
and we want to honor and protect the natural
beauty around us.
A key resource is One Planet Living, an
international organization that promotes
long-term sustainability through easy-tograsp
eco-friendly practices. New Smyrna
Beach was the first city in Florida to join
the global initiative, and the City’s guiding
focus is sustainability—as partners join
together to protect treasured natural surroundings
and promote eco-friendly tourism.
At local breweries, cafes and restaurants
including Café Verde and Yellow Dog Eats,
owners and crews focus on local farm ingredients,
recycling, and paper to-go products.
Other Sustainability Partners include the
Hampton Inn New Smyrna Beach, just two
blocks from the beach and boardwalk, and a
short walk from galleries, shops, and restaurants—guests
can park their cars and begin
exploring.
Joining the city as a sustainability leader in
the One Planet Living program, the New
Smyrna Beach Area Visitor’s Bureau
(NSBAVB) encourages recycling and helps to
coordinate volunteers for beach clean-ups.
The Bureau is also a destination member of
the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and
FRESHEST CATCH & NO TRACE TRAVEL
New Smyrna Beach visitors can do their
part by visiting local farm markets and supporting
restaurants using local-sourced ingredients,
saying “no” to single-use plastics, and
choosing recyclable/reusable shopping bags.
Guests are asked to follow “Leave No Trace”
principles—taking home special memories,
but leaving behind no traces beyond barefoot
footprints on this treasured, 17-mile stretch of
sugar-white sand beaches.
If your trip includes fishing, a meaningful
way to enjoy the seafood abundance without
waste is to make your first stop off the
dock at one of the area restaurants participating
in the “Catch ’n’ Cook” program.
Bring in your fish to be cooked to your
specifications— at JB’s Fish Camp, Beacon
Restaurant, Goodrich Seafood Restaurant
and Oyster House, Off the Hook Raw Bar
& Grill, and Outriggers Tiki Bar and Grille.
Together, local participants and visitors alike
can learn, share, and be part of a greener
future for New Smyrna Beach and beyond.
Every oyster, and every action counts.
Be a Responsible Visitor
This Year in the
New Smyrna Beach Area
The New Smyrna Beach Area Visitors Bureau
and Leave No Trace invite you to be part
of the responsible visitation solution this
year. Help protect our natural environment,
community cultures and the experience
of others by practicing the Leave No Trace
Seven Principles. Here’s where you can start:
Plan Ahead and Prepare
• Consider a midweek visit, instead of the
weekend. The busiest times on our roads,
beaches, and causeways are on the
weekends when parking gets full sometimes
as early as 9:00am.
• Please contain all your trash and litter until
you find an available receptacle. Everybody
and every animal thanks you in advance.
• Always give a lot of space to manatees,
dolphins, sea birds and other aquatic animals.
• Please respect every other visitor. The
outdoor spaces in the New Smyrna Beach
Area are for everyone. Being friendly
and welcoming fosters a more inclusive
experience for everyone.
