Hair & Beauty at the heart of the
challenges impacting on the world.
As we say farewell to 2023, this is perhaps a good moment to reflect on a
couple of the big issues that have emerged across the world and which
have been impacting on our industry. We have all talked and written at
length about sustainability and respect for the planet on which we all live.
It’s a topic that has pervaded the whole spectrum of our discussion, not
only in our work, but in all settings, including our personal lives. We at
EsteticaNetwork have been both amazed and delighted at the sheer
commitment of so many hair & beauty salons, industry professionals and
manufacturing companies for their adherence to these values, so much so
that we are genuinely starting to believe that, as an industry, a real green
conscience has been developing among us. Therefore, perhaps now is
the time to stop beating ourselves up, worrying about ‘greenwashing’ and
thinking that we’re not doing enough. Instead, we should be patting
ourselves on the back and recognizing that the hair & beauty sector has,
through its own actions and initiatives, been a trailblazer in promoting
environmental awareness and helping to secure the future of our planet.
As well as our amazing credentials in respect for the environment, we’re
also a shining light when it comes to our love and respect for each other.
We not only embrace all strains of diversity, but we celebrate them as
creative forces to be reckoned with. We thrive on the unconventional
while dismissing the boring and the repetitive. We look beyond the
superficial; thus allowing each other’s hidden skills and talents to emerge.
The big question is, why would anyone want in any industry but ours!?
CULT OF
BEAUTY
THIS LONDON EXHIBITION TELLS THE STORY OF THE
EVOLUTION OF BEAUTY IN SOCIETY THROUGH THE MEDIUM
OF ART, PHOTOGRAPHY, CINEMA AND, OF COURSE,
THE WORLD OF HAIRDRESSING.
E08
DEFINING BEAUTY is a theme of our
times. The mere word itself opens up a
plethora of ideas and reflections on
endless aspects of our society. The Cult of
Beauty is an exhibition at the Wellcome
Collection in London and runs until 28
April 2024. It explores definitions of
beauty through time and culture,
highlighting the profound influence that
morality, status, age, race and gender have
had on the evolution of the concept.
Among the over 200 objects and works of
art, there is also a large section dedicated
to hair: worth mentioning is the focus on
cultural traditions in both Nigeria and the
Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI)
community, as well as This Hair of Mine
(2017) - a film directed by internationally
acclaimed hairstylist, Cyndia Harvey.

ALONGSIDE ITS STATUS as City of Art and Fashion, the
French capital is now ready to host the 2024 Olympic
Games. As a tribute, Paris is also staging an exhibition at the
Musée des Arts Décoratifs until 7th April. Mode et sport, d’un
podium à l’autre takes us on a journey back in time, from the
elegant chic of the Twenties through to the revolutionary
attitudes of the Sixties, showcasing, of course, each decade’s
take on fashion in sport. The exhibition focuses on the looks
that defined each era, demonstrating how fashion has, over
the years, embraced functionality without compromising on
style. Under the microscope are also those French fashion
designers who were instrumental in contributing to this
magnificent partnership: Lacoste, Patou, Hermès & Lanvin.
THE DIVA
Gary Kelly
DIVA IS A MAJOR NEW EXHIBITION AT LONDON’S ICONIC V&A,
CELEBRATING THE EXTRAORDINARY POWER AND CREATIVITY
OF ICONIC PERFORMERS.
DIVA is a story of iconic performers
who with creativity, courage and
ambition have challenged the status
quo and used their voice and their
art to redefine and reclaim role
of ‘diva’. It also looks at how this
has been subverted or embraced over
time across opera, stage, popular
music, and film. DIVA also showcases
five key looks worn by global
phenomenon Rihanna, seen together
for the first time ever. The looks are
on display alongside 60 ensembles
and 250 objects drawn from the
V&A collection and loans from
across the world, spanning fashion,
photography, design, costumes,
music, and live performance.
WOMEN
IN REVOLT!
TATE BRITAIN IN LONDON IS CURRENTLY
STAGING ‘WOMEN IN REVOLT!’ A LANDMARK
EXHIBITION OF FEMINIST ART IN
THE UK FROM 1970 TO 1990.
Gary Kelly
WOMEN IN REVOLT! is a journey
through art and activism in the UK. It
explores how interconnected networks of
women used radical ideas and rebellious
methods to make an invaluable
contribution to British culture. The
exhibition includes pieces by 100 women
artists and collectives living and working
in the UK, showcasing art through
painting, drawing, photography, textiles,
printmaking, film and sculpture. The
exhibition platforms many women, who
despite long careers, have been largely left
outside the artistic narratives of the time.
These two decades saw a dramatic
evolution of the relationship between
women, work, and the domestic
environment, with the exhibition
addressing significant landmark
moments such as the first women’s
liberation conference in the UK, Miss
World protests and the formation of the
Brixton Black Women’s Group.
■ STREETWISE STRONG. “Even short
men’s cuts can offer flexibility if
you know how to craft a smart cut so
that the wearer has multiple style
options. To create this confident
▲ CLASSIC MODERN. “This image is
timeless, representing a trend that never
goes out of style - the ‘buzz cut’- bu t
this time with a twist. Opting for an
all over cut, my vision was to create
something a little more unique,
adding a slight lift at the front section,
which recalls a vision of a ‘ledge’.
This slight addition gives the hair so
much more depth and allows the
individual to bring their classic look into
the modern day, with something a little
different.” Tracey Ann Smith (UK)
◆ WET LOOK. “The wet look is still in
for both men and women. These looks
may appear wash and wear but require
some specific products to achieve, such
as Pomades, gels and light hold sprays.”
Luigi Martini (USA)
● SPIKY SHAPE. “We need to look at
the world in another way and have
more patience and understanding.
I am often inspired by my godson
Kingneth, who is an autistic child.
From one side, autistic children can
get angry because their emotions are
more sensitive than ours. They can cry
and break down, but this is a form of
instinctive protection. From the other
side, they are kind and gentle; they
will instinctively protect themselves
like hedgehogs – hence my spiky shape
portrayed here.” Thiam Kui Siew
■ EXPERIMENTAL TEXTURE. ““We are
very fortunate to be in an era where
the male grooming market is progressing
at such an exceptional rate, trends are
continuously being unveiled and clients
are becoming much more experimental.
This image created by the 2023 Project
Men team is a true representation of
the market currently. Whilst different
textures, lengths and volumes are
becoming much more on trend, the
classic barbering techniques are still
very much present. This image
showcases the partnership of old and
new – the close head shave and blend,
with the longer length and texture used
throughout.” Simon Shaw (UK)
▲ CURL ENHANCEMENT. “I went for a
very low taper keeping the length in the
rest of the hair so I could really use
product to enhance the curls. My
inspiration for this look was having a
strong shape. Making a shape in a
hairstyle by keeping the hair long and
tapered in the edges. I love this image
because of the way the hair sits around
the head in perfect fashion.” Charles
◆ STYLE CONTRASTS. “Contrasting
lengths and textures make this look
perfect for any occasion, from casual to
black tie. Easy to maintain for guys with
curly hair. Why fight it when it can look
so good?” Cherry Petenbrink (USA)
● STATEMENT LOOK . “This image was
part of our Lustre collection, inspired
by 70s disco vibes! We wanted to
showcase a variety of creative hair looks,
using materials and wigs that would
create incredibly unique, statement hair
looks. This men’s look was created
using a wig made from rubber. I spray
painted it with silver paint and
then by stretching it, created a really
distressed effect and the illusion of
textures and tones.” Suzie McGill,
● SKINFADED QUIFF. “The skinfaded
quiff is a combination of two classic
elements: the fade, where the back of the
head and sides are cut extremely short
or shaved. The characteristic quiff on
top instead consists of longer hair styled
boldly.” Jürgen Niederl (USA)
■ ROCKABILLY TED. “I love my take on
the Rockabilly haircut. I was inspired
by a mix of the New Romantics and the
Teddy Boys. Guys during both eras took
pride in the way they dressed and would
take a lot of time and effort to make
their hair follow suit. Bauhaus and
The Stray Cats were also an inspiration
for this haircut. I wanted to embrace
that classic ‘elephant trunk’ s tyling,
leaving a slight disconnection through
the top and sides to keep it modern
with a retrospective twist.” Ryan
Chessman (UK)
▲ SKULLET/MULLET HYBRID. “This
image shows my skillset of razor work,
precision cutting, point cutting, fade
work and even a little pattern work. My
model Luke was the inspiration for this
cut. I have been cutting his hair for a
number of years now, so I am very aware
that his poker straight hair makes
shorted styles difficult to style, so
because of this he’s sported a buzz cut
for most of that time. But he wanted to
try something new that would give him
something to play about with and the
skullet/mullet hybrid was the perfect
style!” Ryan Lewis (UK)
◆ ZEITGEIST. “This look is a celebration
of modernity because it captures the
zeitgeist – individuals that are never
afraid to be who they are and never
follow the crowd.” Mike Taylor (USA)
PERCEPTION
by Great Lengths
Great Lengths have unveiled their new photographic
collection, Perception – 4 dramatically different looks
which celebrate the diversity of Great Lengths. Perception
seeks to challenge the stereotype of extensions imagery
by showcasing their remarkable versatility.
and how to become a certified
Great Lengths stylist

Perception was shot by iconic hair photographer Richard Miles under
the creative direction of award-winning hairdressers Rick and Zoe
Roberts. The collection demonstrates the transformative potential of
Great Lengths – not only for adapting hair length but for adding texture,
volume, manageability and colour to all hair types. From flawless
silver-toned waves to perfectly-coiled Afro curls, the looks highlight the
power of extensions to enhance individual beauty, while appearing
natural and completely undetectable.

Stylists on the shoot were Great Lengths Masters 2023 – Jo Fox, Linda Thornton, Katie
Hemming and Jade Hobster. The 4 were selected after a rigorous judging process,
which saw entrants from all over the UK and Ireland showcase their passion and talent
over several rounds. With creative input from Rick and Zoe, the stylists used their
extensive Great Lengths expertise to create wearable, trend-led styles that invite the
consumer to rethink their opinion of hair extensions. “Great Lengths is a forwardthinking,
inclusive company and we wanted to capture that positivity in a collection of
images that showcases the true capabilities of hair extensions,” comments Rick
Roberts. “As well as creating looks based on length, we’ve also worked with texture,
blending, layers and colour to challenge people’s perceptions of hair extensions.”

Great Lengths is the first
extensions company to
achieve B Corp status, a
reflection of the
company’s dedication to
using business as a force
for good, aligning with
rigorous social and
environmental standards.
The brand’s partnership
with the Little Princess
Trust was also an
industry first, allowing
clients to donate their
worn hair extensions,
once removed, to the
charity who use the hair
TRAIN
TO
Gary
Kelly
E74

Your salon is growing and
you need to take on new
staff. The first question is
'where do I find them?'. If
you poach from other salons
the risk is that, in 6 months'
time, someone else will
poach from you. So perhaps
the big dilemma is not so
much 'where do I find them',
but 'how do I keep them'.
Education can hold the key.
75E

prodossier education
6 educational experts give us their advice on how
a structured educational programme is instrumental
in helping salons to recruit and retain their staff:
CHARLES Rose
Crate Cheshire
“Continued in-salon education
is essential for young hair
professionals. It’s not just about
personal development; it’s a
collective journey for the entire
team. Establishing a structured
framework for training days
and nights creates excitement
and sustained interest. Actively
involving team members in the
training process transforms it into
a collaborative effort, creating
a sense of unity. Assigning
them responsibilities in training
encourages individual exploration,
prompting them to delve into
new trends and techniques as
part of their personal homework.
Demonstrating genuine concern
for their work and clientele builds
a reciprocal care within the team.
Embrace education, not only for
your team but for yourself too.”
PAUL Corbett
Advanced Creative Director at Francesco Hair Salons
“Education is the beating heart of the hairdressing industry. We inspire, nurture,
grow and thrive with knowledge that has been passed through generations. If we
are to have any optimism about our business’ future, then we must continue to
educate to a consistently high standard. At Francesco Hair Salon we believe that we
reap what we sow. By passing on our knowledge, we gain the trust of our stylists
and help to give them a future bigger than they expected. It helps us to build a family
mindset that promotes loyalty, but not at the cost of anyone’s ambition. Sure, some
people will take that knowledge with them, but imagine the consequences if you
didn’t give your employees a well prepared path of education The question isn't:
“What if you invest in educating somebody and they leave?” but rather: “What if
you don't and they stay?” Investing time and money into education is the greatest
investment you can make in buildng a fulfilled team and a happy clientele.”
LEIGH Kerr
Academy Director at Rainbow Room International
“Education is my passion, and I’m always looking for new innovative methods to
teach my students. Fundamentally, consistency and structure is the key. Students
need structure and a definitive plan, especially with hairdressing having one of the
highest rates of neurodiversity of any industry. We are a very “hands on, creative,
‘learn lots on the job’ sector,” but the only way to ensure staff progression and
retention is to have clear definitive lessons and consistent teaching methods, with
the odd fun task thrown in to break up the training days. By having structure, being
able to see clear plans, and being part of their own goal setting resulting in trusting
us, then retention levels stay high. This is relevant for any level of student that I
educate, from my partnership with Princes Trust delivering Get Started programmes,
our level 2 & 3 Modern Apprentices, our Graduate stylist programme and even for
our qualified stylists - they all have clear structure and goals.”
E76

LOUISE Howard-Long - Director at Architect Hair
“Hairdressing is a creative craft and it’s very hard to fit set industry wide standards to a business which is as
fluid, wide ranging and creative as ours. This is why I think it’s advisable for salons to have their own separate
structured educational programmes, this not only ensures high standards but distinguishes salons that have
a real commitment to the futures of their teams. At Architect we have always had our own separate in-house
training structure that runs alongside and compliments college education but is more intensive and is created
to serve the salons needs, requiring a higher level of skills quicker. This means our assistants have always
ended their training with a much higher skill set than many of their contemporaries at college. We have ended
up having 2 different providers delivering and administrating our apprenticeships, which has been interesting
to say the least, we have found that standards andstructures have varied massively, there are huge issues with
levels of training in colleges and academies that must be addressed by our industry. Many standards within
hairdressing qualifications tend to relate to the elements that are easier to quantify such as theory and Health
& Safety rather than creative hairdressing skills, which causes an imbalance, it’s so much easier to mark
written work than it is to teach a haircut, and it requires less skilled assessors.”
CHRIS Grimley
Owner, Fusion Hair Co
“Sharing my knowledge with the next generation of
hairstylists is super-important to me because there’s no
point keeping the good stuff for yourself; our industry
needs more openness and sharing, in order for the
standard to stay high and to inspire the youngsters - more
now than ever. At Fusion Hair Co I’ve created an online
platform which my whole team can access through
their phones. This has been great because if someone
needs to see something a few times for it to sink in, then
they can do so whenever they like. My platform covers
everything from how to make a hot drink right through to
complex colouring techniques and everything in between.
I believe this shows the learners that at Fusion we have
a strong ethos on learning and progressing - something
that is a necessary staple in our industry. We create a
plan for each individual team member and they work
through it, completing various stages to achieve the next
level in the salon. We achieve this by providing in house
education as a team concentrating on any specific needs,
or we will travel to courses externally, depending on
what’s required.”
MICHAEL Smith
Director at Tristan Eves
“Structured education is critical for us. When we opened
the salon, our whole premise was about having a Mayfair
quality salon in the middle of West Sussex. We knew
we wouldn’t be able to get the staff immediately, locally.
So initially, when we opened, we encouraged former
colleagues from London to come and do a few days with
us, but it became evident that we needed to start our own
apprenticeship scheme. We now have four team members
who have been through our structured training and stayed
with us. As well as attending college, more importantly,
they’ve been trained by us internally. As they go through
the training process, they’re encouraged to get their own
models in as they progress. It’s more about finding specific
models for specific issues they need to cover. Also, our
training is wider than just the cutting and colouring. It’s
the whole thing, from customer service to being taught
how to clean properly. It’s important for us that we take
them away to stay in a five-star hotel and experience fivestar
service, so they get to understand what it’s all about.
They’ve not necessarily ever been exposed to that before,
but it's a remarkably positive eye-opener for them.“
Stay Ahead
of the Trend
You can stay one step ahead with Fresha’s first-ever trend report,
launched with trend forecaster WGSN.
The hair and beauty industry is constantly
evolving, as are the trends with which we
follow for fashion, style and business.
One of the great things about the hair,
beauty and barbering industry is it is
forever looking ahead and adapting to
changes in client behaviours, needs and
demands. Now, thanks to Fresha, you can
stay one step ahead as they partner with
leading trend forecasters WGSN, to
launch its first-ever trend report, packed
with insights that will drive the hair,
beauty and wellness industry forward.
INVALUABLE INSIGHTS
The team behind the Future of Beauty and
Wellness Report 2024 analysed 600
million Fresha bookings, scanned more
than 2,000 social media accounts and
spoke to more than 1,000 consumers
across the UK, US, Canada and Australia
to gain insights that will benefit salons
for the next years. From services and
treatments to client’s changing
expectations, the report gives an
invaluable insight into how business
owners can outpace the competition and
adapt for the client of the future. Over
the next five years salon owners should
expect to see a shift in client habits and
interests as they seek out services and
treatments that offer a holistic,
personalised approach, customer-centric
services and feelgood experiences.
HUGE OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH
The Global Wellness Institute has
projected the wellness economy - of
which hair and barber shops play a big
part - will nearly double in size by 2025,
signalling a huge opportunity for growth.
Trends such as dopamine beauty that
prioritise mental and emotional health
and deliver a natural high, will sit
alongside services and treatments that
were once deemed indulgent, now a
necessity for client’s self-care and
wellbeing. And don’t forget offering
gender-fluid language and services to
create a salon experience for everyone.
#hairhasnogender has garnered almost
30m views on TikTok and is more
than just a trend, it’s a reality salons
should be tapping into.
Salons who respond to individual needs,
authentically acknowledging their
identity and give access to products,
services and experts that can help them
feel like the best version of themselves
are the businesses that will flourish in
the years to come. And while
environments should cater for everyone,
the modern male still proves to be the
most loyal of clients, with the barber/
client relationship unwavering.
So as we head into a new year, there’s
new opportunities to take your business
to the next level. Fresha’s report not
only delves into the trends, but delivers
steps you and your bisiness can take
to achieve long-term goals and the
vision you have for your future success.
*Fresha has partnered with WGSN to uncover the most significant shifts in consumer
behaviour, and the treatment and service needs impacting the future landscape. We carried
out research in February 2023 across four countries (US, Canada, UK, Australia) with a total
of 1,000 respondents (250 per country). Participants were aged 18 to 60 years old and had
booked at least one appointment at a hair, grooming, beauty or wellness salon in
the past six months. This is the largest dataset of this kind in the beauty and wellness
industry, and includes over half a billion bookings made through Fresha’s software globally
from 2016 until the end of 2022.
Every self-respecting client wants to look
their best over the holiday season, but the
colder months often demand that hair
requires some extra special attention. Hair
can easily become dehydrated and subject
to damage build-up, as the elements conspire
against it. Cue the OLAPLEX Holiday
2023 Collection from the #1 Professional
Bond Building Brand*! Each holiday kit
includes the iconic OLAPLEX No.3 Bond
Perfector to repair damage and strengthen
all hair types at home in as little as 3
minutes. It’s an ideal foundation for all
holiday hair looks and for “New Year, New
You” hair transformations. For anyone on
your list, or for your own hair self-care
regime, add a touch of sparkle with the gift
of strong, healthy-looking holiday hair.
WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT
Every kit is powered by patented
OLAPLEX Bond Building Technology,
the innovative ingredient that repairs
damage and strengthens every hair type
on a molecular level. It does this by relinking
damaged disulfide bonds - the
ones that give hair its strength and
structure. Each kit offers simple routine
that makes an easy gift for any hair type.
Plus, multiple kits can be used together to
create a comprehensive bond building
routine for visibly healthier hair.
Beyond its role as a functional necessity, the styling station is
a focal point that influences salon design, and it has to be
perfectly curated. Takara Belmont’s National Sales Manager,
Katie Fielder, explains: “Styling stations are at the heart of
every salon. Keeping them clean, clutter-free, and appropriately
spaced ensures your clients have enough privacy, while giving
stylists all-round access to deliver an exceptional experience.”
DESIGN FOR SUCCESS
Optimising space efficiency means having the right number of
stations per sq. ft while selecting the right chairs, mirrors and
styling units is crucial to creating the perfect service setting.
Katie: “Styling chairs reflect your design, colour scheme and
brand. They need to look amazing, ensure complete comfort
and withstand the rigours of constant use without breaking
down or degrading over time. Styling units can be affixed to
walls or standalone in more open settings. And aside from the
obvious function of clients being able to see their
transformation take shape and giving stylists a crucial view to
help them create, mirrors enhance communication by
promoting eye-to-eye contact and positive interactions.”
opportunities and boost profits. “Innovations such as the RS
Swing and Yume Oasis can locate high-end backwash
experiences at the styling station,” continues Katie. “And when
it comes to colour, scalp care, conditioning treatments and
other chemical processes, Roller Ball F’s mobile or wallmounted
versions elevate colour outcomes, while Spa Mist II
also allows for scalp care, hand conditioning and other spastyle
services to be served at the styling station.”
