TMEA BACK THEN by Michael Chester Note from the editor: Under the leadership of Michael Chester (16th Editor), the Tennessee Musician included a new feature titled “TMEA Back Then” that featured the Tennessee Musician and the Tennessee Music Education Association throughout history. During his first year as editor, Mr. Chester wrote the original “TMEA Back Then” article in Volume 67, Issue 3 (2015). The following is a reprint of his work that highlighted the inaugural Tennessee Musician, Volume 1, Issue No. 1 (1948) and Dr. J. Clark Rhodes (1st Editor of the Tennessee Musician). In the very first issue of the Tennessee Musician under the editorship of J. Clark Rhodes, an eight-page membership bulletin consisted mostly of snippets of information on school music program performances and selected festival music lists. Then TMEA president Edward Hamilton did not have an address to the membership until the third issue of volume 1. J. Clark Rhodes wrote a humorous, acerbically witty editorial regarding the rationale behind the Tennessee Musician at the spring TMEA Board of Control meeting in Chattanooga in 1948. TMEA and the Tennessee State Department of Education launched a partnership initiative in which rural schools would have access to music specialists in organizing music workshops and community music festivals. This would mark the very first collaboration between TMEA and the Tennessee State Department of Education. Floyd Rodgers was appointed as the new TMEA Membership Chair. Membership in MENC-TMEA was $4.00. Members could opt to join only TMEA at the time for only $1.50. Originally appeared in Tennessee Musician, Vol. 67, No. 3 (2015), p. 40.
