During “heart month,” focus on emotional, physical and spiritual health

Here we are, already in the second month 

of our new year. Wow! 

February is American Heart Month, recognizing 

the importance of physical heart 

health. And, as we all know, Valentine’s Day 

is right in the middle of the month, celebrating 

another type of “heart health.” 

When considering your risk of heart disease, 

a few factors that come to mind are 

your physical fitness levels, your age and 

your diet — but there are many other things 

to consider. After all, even young, physically 

fit people can and have suffered dangerous 

coronary events.

he experienced a cardiac arrest on national 

TV and collapsed on the field. Doctors later 

determined he suffered “commotio cordis.” 

According to the American Heart Association, 

commotio cordis is an extremely rare 

consequence of blunt force trauma to the 

heart that happens at exactly the wrong 

time in the heart rhythm, causing the heart 

to stop beating effectively. 

Hamlin is now back on the field with his 

teammates, but his collapse last year really 

made the world stop and think about how 

fragile the human heart can be. I know personally 

what a heart attack is like; I had one 

a couple of years ago and am still recovering. 

So, you ask, “What does all this have to 

do with my spiritual and emotional health?” 

Well, let’s take a look at the heart. 

Blood flows through the heart, and the 

heart cleanses the blood to keep us safe from 

infection. If the passages in and out of the 

heart get blocked, it will shut down and stop 

cleansing blood. This can lead to death. 

Look at Jesus and his cleansing blood. 

We flow through Christ’s heart daily as he

cleanses us. How many of you heard of the 

Sacred Heart of Jesus? And the hymn, “Are 

You Washed in the Blood?” Have you been 

washed in the cleansing blood of the lamb? 

Well, now you know more about blood 

flow and its cleansing power. Just think of all 

your sins flowing through the heart of Christ 

and being cleansed as they flow through 

those ventricle channels. We enter Christ’s 

heart dark with sin but come out snow white 

— clean and refreshed. The sin has been 

washed away, and we are renewed in Christ. 

He shed his blood on the cross for our 

salvation. He carries us daily in his love and 

washes us clean. 

There are no catches. There are no strings 

attached. We must repeatedly say, “I’m sorry,” 

and he washes us clean. 

Just as our hearts cleanse blood continually 

in our body, so are we constantly 

washed clean through the blood of Christ. 

However, just a heart attack can stop blood 

flow in our bodies, and so can an unrepentant 

spirit “clog” the heart of Christ.

you — no one else can do it for you — can accept 

that grace, flow through Christ’s bloodstream 

and heart, and come out clean again.

SMOKEY HOLLOW COMMEMORATES TALLAHASSEE’S AFRICAN- 

AMERICAN HERITAGE 

Tallahassee’s Cascades Park celebrates the legacy of the Smokey Hollow community. For over 60 

years, Smokey Hollow was a thriving black community and home to churches, restaurants, stores, and 

hundreds of residents. Urban renewal eliminated the neighborhood in the 1960s, but the stories and 

history of the area live on through the Smokey Hollow Commemoration. To make sure the history and 

heritage of Smokey Hollow were told accurately, former residents of the lost neighborhood played a 

major role in the design and development.

Looking for some forever “buddies.” 

Poor sweet Buddy Boy was found as a stray, 

wandering the streets of North Florida when a 

neighbor found him and called us. Estimated 

to be about four years old, he may not be able 

to tell us his story but its clear that he hasn’t 

had it easy. He appeared to have an injured leg, 

which turned out to be a problem with a ligament 

which we have had surgically repaired. 

But none of this hardship has affected that 

smile! His foster mom says he is the very best 

dog. We would love for you to meet him and 

see if you have room to give this boy a great 

home. He will give you nothing but love in 

return!
