Parkinson’s pollution link You may be more likely to develop Parkinson’s disease if you live in a city where levels of air pollution are higher, say scientists at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. Their recent study, published in Neurology, found that people living in regions with above-median levels of air pollution have a 56% greater risk of developing Parkinson’s compared to those living in regions with the lowest pollution levels. The researchers also found that the relationship between air pollution and Parkinson’s incidence is not the same in every part of the country – instead, it varies in strength by region. The St. Louis area is identified as a Parkinson’s “hotspot” according to the air quality map they developed, along with other cities in the Mississippi-Ohio River Valley, parts of Kansas, North Dakota, Texas and Michigan, and the tip of Florida. “This means that the pollution in these areas may contain more combustion particles from traffic and heavy metals from manufacturing, which have been linked to cell death in the part of the brain involved in Parkinson’s disease,” said study leader Brittany Krzyzanowski, Ph.D. The team’s conclusions were based on a Medicare dataset of nearly 22 million people, which identified nearly 90,000 Americans with Parkinson’s. They used geospatial analysis to confirm the associations between numbers of people with the disease and airborne fine particulate matter resulting from pollution in the regions where they live. “Despite years of research trying to identify the environmental risk factors of Parkinson’s disease, most efforts have focused on exposure to pesticides,” Krzyzanowski added. “This study suggests that we should also be looking at air pollution as a contributor in the development of Parkinson’s disease.” Forecasting pain Changes in the weather and worsening of chronic pain are linked for many people. For example, shifts in atmospheric pressure and humidity have been shown to induce migraines in those with the condition, as well as worsening of pain caused by arthritis or other persistent joint problems. In a recent survey conducted by the University of Georgia, about 70% of respondents with chronic pain said they would actually alter their day-to-day plans based on weather-based pain “forecasts.” “We’re finding more consistent relationships between weather patterns and pain, so it seems more possible to make weatherbased pain forecasts This study was to survey and see what the audience was for this type of forecast,” said lead author Christopher Elcik, Ph.D. The survey included more than 4,600 people, both with and without chronic pain. Among migraine sufferers who responded, 89% identified weather as something that impacts their pain level, and 79% saw weather as a trigger for pain. Among individuals with other conditions, 64% said weather patterns could trigger pain and 94% identified weather as a factor that impacts pain. Their interest in using a pain forecasting tool was also high, Elcik said, with 72% of those living with migraine and 66% with other pain-related conditions saying they would alter their behavior in response to information it could provide. (Adobe Stock photo) “I see how much people can be affected by these types of pain, so if I can provide someone with insight into the level of risk for a day, maybe people can take steps to prevent the pain from happening,” Elcik said. “There are preventative measures people can take if risks are higher.” About half of those with pain conditions said they would be “extremely likely” to take those measures – which include taking medication, resting or avoiding other pain triggers – if they were using a forecasting tool. One a day The simple step of taking a multivitamin once a day appears to protect brain function in older adults, according to the latest of three separate but related studies which consistently point to the same conclusion.
