RECREATION & CULTURE PROGRAMS
The City of Revelstoke Parks, Recreation & Culture Department believes that every child should
have the opportunity to enjoy and play sports. Research shows that participation in recreation
improves health, life skills, teamwork, socialization and goal setting in children and youth. We want to
make sure you know about the opportunities available to ensure all children have access to
recreation and cultural activities.
C.O.R. Recreation Passes
The City of Revelstoke, through Council
support, offers free annual recreation passes
and 50% subsidy on certain recreation
programs to low Income residents. Look for
the heart logo labelled on programs that qualify
for this assistance.
KidSport BC
The KidSport concept was hatched in 1993 by
board and staff at Sport BC as a way to help
address the challenges faced by many families
when registering their children in organized sport.
Their mission is to remove financial barriers that
prevent children from playing organized sports!
Revelstoke’s Youth Access Fund
This fund was established to ensure all youth
have equal opportunity to participate in sports,
recreation, arts and culture programs, events
and activities. The YA fund was designed to
help remove financial barriers including
registration fees, equipment, transportation
and other costs associated with participation)
for youth from low and modest income families
to participate in activities that they would
otherwise not be able to.
JumpStart
Jumpstart gives kids a sporting chance.
Participating in sport not only helps the
physical and social well-being, but helps build
self-esteem. By helping kids get into the game,
we are equipping them with determination.
This confidence goes beyond practices and
games. No kid should be left on the side lines
but in Canada 1 in 3 families cannot afford to
enroll their kids in organized sports. Jumpstart
is here to help.
Families requiring assistance need to fill out
the application before the fees are due, as
money goes directly to the organization.
Applications can be submitted from January 1
- November 1.
information or call:
The Stoke Youth Network was designed by youth for youth,
focused on increasing opportunities for meaningful youth engagement in Revelstoke!
Background & Program Summary
Revelstoke’s Youth Access Fund, (YA Fund) was established in 2014 as a way to ensure all youth have equal opportunity
to participate in sports, recreation, arts and cultural programs, events and activities. The YA Fund is designed to help
remove financial barriers, (including registration fees, equipment, transportation and other costs associated with
participation), for youth from low and modest income families to participate in activities that they would otherwise not be
able to do.
Participant Eligibility
Youth between the age of 6-19 years old, who are residents of Revelstoke and whose family exhibit financial need are
eligible. Financial need is defined as any family that falls below the Revelstoke Living Wage income of $75,000 (before
tax) and $60,000 (after-tax). Youth from families with a modest income that exceed the value outlined above and who are
experiencing need as a result of unforeseen financial circumstances or family difficulty may also qualify for a full or partial
subsidy (e.g. job layoff or illness of a parent, family separation, crisis, etc.).
Parent & Tot Program Overview
Recommended age: 4 months to 3 years old. The Lifesaving Society Parent & Tot lessons structure
in-water interaction between parent and child to stress the importance of play in developing
water-positive attitudes and skills. Activities and progressions are based on child development allowing
parents to register in the level appropriate for their child’s age: 4-12 months, 12-24 months, or 2-3
years.
During this program, one parent or caregiver will be required to be
in the water with the tot (one-to-one ratio).
Parent & Tot 1 – Jellyfish (previously Starfish)
Recommended age: 4-12 months. Parent & Tot 1 provides an orientation to
water for infants and their parent/caregiver. Parents/caregivers will learn how to
swim safely with their infant in the pool through instruction of holds and
supports. Infants will be introduced to getting their face wet, blowing bubbles
and floating with the help of their caregiver.
Parent & Tot 2 – Goldfish (previously Duck)
Recommended age: 12-24 months. Parent & Tot 2 teaches toddlers how to play
in the water safely! They’ll learn how to enter and exit the water with help from
their parent/caregiver and will play games to encourage them to get their face
wet and blow bubbles in the water. Toddlers will also develop floating and kicking
skills with the support of their parent/caregiver.
Parent & Tot 3 – Seahorse (previously Sea Turtle)
Recommended age: 2-3 years. Parent & Tot 3 teaches toddlers how to safely
enter the water wearing a PFD. They’ll develop underwater skills such as
submersion and opening their eyes underwater. ‘Starfish’ floats, ‘pencil’ floats
and kicking skills are taught using songs and games.
24.
*To advance to Swimmer Lessons, your child must be 5 years old on the first day of lessons. If they have completed
Narwhal, they will advance to Swimmer 2. All other preschool swimmers will benefit from gaining more experience in
Swimmer 1.
Nikki Maddison
Celebrating 25 Years of Dedication: A Tribute to Our Remarkable Team Member
Revelstoke, British Columbia – In the heart of our picturesque city, nestled amidst the majestic
mountains and serene lakes, there exists a remarkable individual whose unwavering
commitment has left an indelible mark on our community. This year we celebrate Nikki
Maddison, who has dedicated an impressive 25 years to serving the people of Revelstoke.
A Journey That Began in 1999
Nikki embarked on her journey with the city back in 1999, when the sun-kissed days of summer beckoned her to
the outdoor pool. As a casual lifeguard instructor, she stood watch over the shimmering waters, ensuring the
safety of swimmers and imparting her wisdom to eager young minds. Those early years were filled with laughter,
sunblock-scented memories, and the joy of teaching children the art of swimming.
From Poolside to Pool Assistant Supervisor
In 2005, when the city unveiled its sparkling gem—the newly built aquatic centre, Nikki dove headfirst into her
role as the assistant supervisor. She traded her lifeguard whistle for a clipboard, helping oversee operations,
coordinating swim lessons, and ensuring that every splash echoed with safety and happiness.
The Rise to Supervisor
Fast forward to the present day, and Nikki now wears the mantle of supervisor. For the past 3 years, she has
steered the ship, guiding her team through the ebb and flow of seasons. Her leadership is like a steady
current—gentle yet powerful—nurturing camaraderie among staff members and fostering a sense of belonging.
Revy Roots and Family Ties
Born and raised right here in Revelstoke, Nikki embodies the spirit of our community. Her voice and laughter
echoes throughout the entire valley. When she’s not at the pool, you’ll find her around town with friends or
family, definitely NOT camping.
Simple Pleasures
Nikki's joys are as straightforward as a perfectly executed backstroke. She revels in napping, finding solace in
the quiet moments. Her taste buds dance to the rhythm of good food, whether it’s a hearty bowl of soup or a
delicate pastry from the local bakery. She is perfectly content when she’s surrounded by friends and having a
good time. Always willing to help those in need, Nikki is known for her welcoming, kind, and super fun character.
The Heart of the Job
Ask Nikki about the best part of her job….. It’s not the shimmering pool tiles or the neatly stacked kickboards.
No, it’s the senior citizen patrons who greet her with warm smiles each day. They arrive early mornings to enjoy
the quiet parts of the day, ready for their aqua aerobics class or walking the lazy river. Their resilience inspires
her, and their friendship warms her soul. And then there are the little ones—the future Olympians in floaties.
Their triumphant giggles as they conquer their fear of water remind her why she chose this path. She celebrates
their every stroke, their every leap, and their newfound confidence. These tiny victories create bonds that
stretch beyond chlorine-scented walls—they weave a tapestry of community.
Dreams and Anticipations
On slow days, Nikki gazes out from her office window dreaming of a far-off
retirement. She dreams of lazy afternoons, sipping tea on her porch, and
perhaps—fingers crossed—winning the lottery. The anticipation of
freedom and leisure dances in her heart, as she imagines herself
doing whatever she feels like! No doubt, this would include caring
and giving to others in need with her big heart and apt for kind
gestures.
We raise our glasses to Nikki, let us honor her years of
dedication to the City of Revelstoke. May all her years to come
be as rich as her lottery ticket bearing the numbers that lead
her to new adventures.
Thank you, Nikki, for 25 extraordinary years. You
are the heartbeat of our aquatics family, and your
impact ripples through generations. Our centre
wouldn’t be the same without you.
28.
Cheers to Nikki!
Guidelines on Appropriate Behavior at Skate Facilities
There are a host of unwritten or informal rules which govern skateparks.
This is called “skatepark etiquette”.
Skatepark Etiquette is in place not only for fairness, but for safety.
Below is a list of some common issues / things to be aware of if you are new to visiting skateparks.
This list is not definitive however it is designed to provide guidance to new skaters and parents, and a
refresher to return skaters.
It’s a skatepark, not a playground
Not a free day care – children must be supervised. Ensure that your child is aware of the etiquette
rules and adheres to them. They keep everyone safe and ensures everyone gets to use the park.
Flow
Flow refers to the directions people go in a park. Each park has a flow or “lines” comparable to traffic.
If you’re new to a park, take a few minutes to watch how people are using it so you can learn the flow.
Go with the flow, not against it!
Beginners
Don’t just drop a new skater off by themselves at a skatepark. You can hang out as well. As an adult it
can be easier to observe the flow the park and provide suggestions to your skater. For beginners, we
suggest going to the skatepark at non-peak hours. That means go early and avoid going in the
afternoons– especially on weekends. Heavy afternoon sessions at the skatepark can be intimidating,
especially if your child is just learning. In general if your skater is just learning, have them stay closer
to the sides of the park. Center areas can look wide open, but are often right in the middle of popular
lines (paths) that most advance skaters may be flying through at any moment. It’s even better if your
child can learn how to push and balance before going to the skatepark.
If you’re an experienced skater, give beginners extra room and time. Respect them because we were
all beginners at one point. And if their parents are around, maybe give them some advice, too, on how
their kid can safely ride the park with everyone else.
Sitting
Don’t sit in areas that can be used for skating. This includes ledges, stairs, rails, and coping. The park
has designated spectator seating. Standing on the edge of the bowl or half-pipe is also a big no-no. If
you’re unsure, watch the “flow” or ask somebody if it’s okay to sit in a certain spot.
No Snaking
A big part of skate park etiquette is being aware of what everyone around you is doing. “Snaking”
means going when it’s not your turn. Everyone needs to wait their turn at a skatepark. Watch the other
skaters before you jump in, and wait your turn. Don’t snake!
“Board!”
If your board shoots out or away from you, you should yell “Board!” as a courtesy to other users.
62.
No Marathon Runs
This is especially common among the little kids and scooters. A marathon run is where
someone just keeps going and going without taking any breaks. This is particularly
problematic when skating a bowl or ramp where there is typically only one user at a time.
Keep runs short and when you bail, get out of the way so the next person can skate.
Scooters
Scootering is easy to do right away. Skateboarding is not. Learn the traffic patterns. Do not ride
against the flow of other riders and don’t hang scooters over coping.
Bikes
Smooth tire bikes (BMX, jump) scooters, inline skates are permitted. However, no muddy tires. Dirt
and little pebbles are treacherous to skateboard wheels.
Mountain bikes are not permitted. There are many kilometres of trails to ride around Revelstoke.
While the skate park looks fun to ride, your bike brings dirt and gravel – safety hazards for skaters.
Happy riding on the trails!
All Users
Everyone has an equal right to be in the park whether it’s Skateboards, BMX, inline skates, or
scooters. Please be courteous of other users and treat them with the same respect you’d expect.
Respect The Park & Neighbourhood
You should be proud of your local skatepark, so do your bit to make sure it looks good. Put your
garbage in the bins provided and absolutely no tagging / graffiti.
The Skatepark is located in a neighbourhood – be respectful of the neighbours – no foul language
or loud music.
Don’t Be Afraid To Apologize
If you slip up and break one of the rules above, don’t be afraid to apologize to people when you
realize it. If you get plowed over because you were in the way, dust yourself off, make sure the
other rider is all right, and tell him you are sorry for not looking out. A simple apology goes a long
way to fanning the flames of a hot head.
Have fun!
The most important part of being in the skatepark is to have fun and enjoy yourself. It doesn’t
matter about how good you are as long as you have fun! The more you practice the better you will
be and there is no substitute for practice.
BANNER PROGRAM 2024
Banner painting sessions will be held throughout October and November. We will be posting
banner dates soon so keep watch!
This is a creative and fun community enhancement imitative for
anyone to take part in. We have kids, adults, and businesses
that all take part in this program.
You do not have to be an artist to paint a banner! It is
a fun and easy with local artists on site to help you
with your creation.
These banners hang in the city streets for the
majority of the year. Once they are taken
down, they are yours to keep.
**Banner painting takes
place at the Visual Arts
Centre**
