BIG TURNOUT: An estimated
15,000 people attended the
festival in Thomson Park.
FAERIE FUN: The Christchurch Faerie Circle face painting was a popular attraction
at the 13th annual I Love Brighton festival.
• By Geoff Sloan
AN ESTIMATED crowd of
up to 15,000 descended on
Thomson Park for the 13th
annual ‘I Love Brighton’
festival.
Event co-organiser Martha
Baxendell said the free festival
was a great way to start the
year.
“This is a family
friendly event that we
put on every year with
activities for children, a
little market area, we’ve got
entertainment happening.
I mean, just a fun day for
everyone.”
Community groups
and sports clubs took the
opportunity to showcase their
offerings, keen to recruit new
members by running games
and activities.
The event began after the
Christchurch earthquakes as
a way of lifting the spirits of
the New Brighton community
and encouraging locals to reengage
in activities.
STREETSCAPE renewal work
about to start in Linwood
Village has been designed
to create a safer and more
welcoming environment.
The package of works includes
wider footpaths, dedicated cycle
lanes, more trees, better lighting
and improved landscaping.
Said the city council’s planning
and delivery transport
manager Jacob Bradbury: “We’re
aiming to make this section
of Stanmore Rd more peoplefriendly
and pleasant for those
who visit the shops and amenities
in the area.
“We’re also focusing on improving
safety for pedestrians
and road users with new bus
stops and bus parking bays, safe
speed platforms at the roundabouts,
footpath resurfacing and
tactile pavers.”
Work began on Monday and
is set to take until mid-March
to complete, with the rest of the
project expected to be wrapped
up by June.
On-street parking on both
sides of the street will be affected
during this time. However,
pedestrians will still be able to
access businesses in the area.
“We’ll need to install temporary
stop-go traffic lights while
we complete this work, with a
one-way system in place between
Worcester St and Hereford St for
the duration,” said Bradbury.
“There will be no left turn
onto Stanmore Rd for those
travelling east on Hereford St,
and for those travelling west
on Hereford St there will be no
right turn onto Stanmore Rd.”
Dancer stepping up to world champs
• By Sasha Watson
LUKE STREET is going to
jig, step and kick his way onto
the stage at the World Irish
Dancing Championships, held
in Glasgow, Scotland, in late
March.
Luke has been training four
times per week with his instructors,
Shannon Dilger and Argene
Flack, at the Southern Cross
Irish Dance School’s new facility
in Phillipstown, and will go to
the championships alongside
fellow dance student, 11-year-old
Cameron Murray.
It will be the Hillmorton
High School year 11 student’s
second time competing at the
world championships, having
competed in Montreal, Canada
last year.
“Being there will be a good
experience, I’ve never been to
Scotland before. While I’d like to
place higher than I did last year,
which was 42nd, getting into the
top 50 per cent would be awesome,”
said the 15-year-old, who
is from Hoon Hay.
However, travelling to and
from the competition, staying
in accommodation and the cost
of airfares will be expensive –
upwards of $15,000.
Luke’s mother Kendra Street
said: “If anyone is keen to donate
and help, that would be amazing.
We have already paid for entry
into the competition, our airfares
HIGH KICKS: Luke Street has been learning Irish dancing
at the Southern Cross Irish Dance school for about five
years and has competed regularly for about two.
are on the credit card and we are
awaiting the council’s response
to Luke’s Youth Development
funding application.
“Finding funding is quite hard
due to him being 15 years old.
Most of the funding requires applicants
to be 16 and older.
“With every . . . donation,
yours or your business name
will be printed onto an ‘I have
your back’ t-shirt, which Luke
STRAIGHT LEGS: Luke
placed 42nd overall in his
first international world
championship last year
held at Montreal, Canada.
will wear out and about to say
thank you to his supporters and
sponsors.”
Luke qualified at the 2023 New
Zealand Irish Dancing national
championships, held at Burnside
High School, having won all
three of his dances for the overall
title and gaining a perfect score
of 300 in the U15s age group.
He has been dancing for about
five years at the Southern Cross
Irish Dance School and has
competed regularly for about
two years. Said Street: “We first
went to a boys-only class before
he joined. Luke thought this was
quite a unique and fun dance
and he had rhythm and could
learn the steps. He loves it, when
he first started, he would just
keep dancing all the time.’’
Luke will be competing in
the soft-shoe and hard-shoe
15-16-year-old boys categories at
the championship, where, if he
places in the top 50 per per cent,
he will then be eligible to compete
in the set dance category.
There will be a panel of five
adjudicators to judge and score
each dance out of 100 points in
aspects including rhythm and
musicality, turn and crossover,
elevation, speed, power, posture,
carriage and presence.
The overall result is based on
the total points a dancer received
from their three dances.
“Luke has pulled up his socks
in terms of training and his
presentation during the dances.
It was good for him, in his first
world championships last year,
to see the standard of dancing
from all of the other boys, and
learn what he needs to do,” said
Street.
