WHEN ALEYNA Osman’s father,
Husaini Bin Hafiz died suddenly
in 2017 from a cardiac condition,
her mother offered her whatever
she needed to cope with the loss.
The 50-year-old was living with
undetected Wellens syndrome and
died while on his way to work as
a Christchurch Hospital mental
health registrar after dropping
Aleyna at school.
The then eight-year-old chose to
sing to deal with her grief.
“I thought she would have asked
for a stuffed bear or a doll but
strangely she said she wanted to
join a choir,” her mother Juliana
Osman said.
“By luck, the Christchurch City
Chorus had a Treatme offer for six
weeks of training and just after
her 11th birthday, Aleyna joined
as a junior choir member. She
competed in her first regionals at
the age of 12.”
Now, the 14-year-old is off to
Kansas City, Missouri, in October,
to sing at her first Sweet Adelines
International Jazz Competition
with the Christchurch City Chorus,
which her mother is also part
of.
“The prep . . . mental, psychological,
physical . . . the experience . .
. the journey is what we are most
excited about. It’s no easy feat, but
you never feel alone,” said Osman.
“And of course, a mum-anddaughter
team is so much more
fun – when we practice together
in the car or the kitchen, it’s great
harmony.

Long-awaited second exit opens

PRESTON PARK residents have
waited nearly a decade for a
second main exit to be installed
to lessen the congestion from its
first entrance.
The Marshland subdivision
has had only one exit from
Prestons Park Dr onto Prestons
Rd, but now, a crucial stretch of
road that connects the subdivision
to Mairehau Rd has been
constructed.
It will be open in about two
weeks.

who lives in
Prestons, said
she has been
waiting for the
second entrance
since moving
into the subdivision
three

“Getting into
and out of the subdivision has
been just diabolical. It’s congested
to hell, especially during
the peak times,” she said.
“Virtually everyone has been
in favour of the exit being built.”
In late 2022, Bunn started a
petition demanding action on
the unfinished road which garnered
about 700 signatures.
The residents were told by the
developers preparatory work
would start in January last year.
However, it was another six
months of waiting before construction
got under way in June.
Said Bunn: “When we cut the
ribbon, I’ll believe the exits have

been completed. It’s been delayed
many times.
“These exits will give the subdivision
better access as well as
to those driving in and out. It’ll
help ambulances and emergency
responders enter quickly. The
biggest issues were the extra
time, money, fuel and distance
we had to travel just to get to
other places.
“We have been well supported
by the local community board,
which has continuously advocated
for this.”
Waitai Coastal-Burwood
Community Board chair Kelly
Barber said getting a second exit
has been one of his priorities
since being elected onto the
board.
“I just want to say, I apologise
to the community that this hasn’t
been fixed sooner. It shouldn’t
have taken so long.”
Construction of the exit, which
is installed at the south end of
the subdivision, meant residents
were forced to take an alternative
route to the main northern exit
or head out a narrow eastern one.
The limited options left the residents
concerned and frustrated
about congestion and safety.
Barber said the cars trying to
leave get “stacked up for miles”
along Prestons Park Dr and then,
residents of the subdivision have
to drive “about 4 kms” to get out.
“With the exit opening being
imminent, I would like to thank
Lyn who instigated and pushed
for the exit as the people of
Preston have been waiting a very
long time.
“I’d also like to thank the
mayor, Phil Mauger, for his intervention
at various times... this
second exit will make a massive
difference to the subdivision and
travel to and from it.”
Roading
projects
approved
A SWATHE of transport
projects, including at two
Shirley intersections and two
roundabouts, have been approved
by the Waipapa Papanui-Innes-
Central and the Waitai Coastal-
Burwood-Linwood community
boards.
The Shirley Rd, Warrington
St and Hills Rd intersection
and the nearby Shirley Rd, New
Brighton Rd, Marshland Rd and
North Parade intersection will be
revamped to improve safety.
The work on the Shirley, Hills
and Warrington intersection
includes installing a safe speed
platform, raised pedestrian crossings
on the Shirley Rd slip lane,
and a new green turning arrow
from Hills Rd into Warrington St.
Changes at the Shirley, Marshland,
New Brighton and North
Parade intersection include safe
speed platforms, the removal of
the left slip lane from Shirley Rd
into Marshland Rd, and a new
traffic island on New Brighton Rd.
Safety improvements have been
also confirmed for the Travis Rd,
Bower Ave and Rookwood Ave
roundabout in New Brighton.
The Bridge St and Estuary Rd
roundabout will get a makeover
after reports of safety concerns.
Works will include new speed
humps and bike sharrows at
all no stopping lines as well as
pedestrian warning signs.

A YOGA teacher with a
specialist interest in women’s
health and hormones has turned
New Brighton beach into a
temporary sunrise yoga studio.
Hundreds of people lined the
beach from 6.30am on Sunday
for Sunrise Yoga with Posh Porridge
– and a swim.
The Sunrise Yoga Club was
started by Hillsborough resident
Jess Campbell, a mum of three
young girls and two stepchildren,
who runs the online yoga
studio She Blooms. She teaches
mainly from the O-Studio in the
central city.
She started the free beach
classes at Sumner and New
Brighton to help people and offer
something different.
“(We) finish off with an optional
dip in the ocean, taking
time to connect with the community.”
Following the 30-minute class,
they meet up for a porridge
breakfast.
Said Jess: “You’ll also find me
teaching a community sunrise
yoga class every second week
here in Christchurch, these are
such special events that have
taken on a life of their own.
“We move between New
Brighton and Sumner beach,
depending on tides, do a
30-minute flow and then a dip in
the water.
“Sometimes we even have
fabulous people come along and
make food and coffee so we can
chat and connect on the beach.”
After going through her share
of ups and downs with mental
health and hormonal imbalance,
Jess aims to help others in the
community.
“Having endometriosis since
my teenage years and post-natal
depression after my second
child, it’s needless to say that
yoga, mindfulness and horse
riding has been an unwavering
friend and tool through it all.”

for Kansas City trip

cost - and the chorus needs help
with funding and donations.
That is why Penny Wenlock,
another chorus member
and the founder of
Pukeko Junction Cafe,
is hosting a private
event at her restored
1850s historical home
Glenmore House.
“It is one of the few
old historical homes left
after the earthquakes.
My partner and I have
spent about two years
repairing the damage and
building the old house up
to a place of modern living,” said
Wenlock.
“It is such an extreme joy to be
in the chorus, to be standing on
the rises with 100 plus women
and making the most compelling
chords together.”
The fundraiser starts at three
different times; 11am-1pm; 1-3pm
and 3-5pm, and will take place on
March 3.
Those who take part in each
of the sessions will be seated and
served rustic homemade food for

morning tea or afternoon tea, and
then be guided on a tour through
the house and gardens.
The profits from the event
will be donated to the chorus,
which was co-founded in 1985 by
Virginia Humphrey-Taylor, who
continues today as the musical
director.
The chorus is one out of about
650 groups which took part in the
preliminary competitions
in each of the participating
countries.
Out of those groups,
only 36 will go to the
states to compete in the
competition.
“The top 11 choruses
in the world will get to
compete further for a
place in the top ten – and
as the overall international
champions,” said
Humphrey-Taylor.
“This year our focus is on music
from The Greatest Showman.
Being in the choir, it’s like being
on Broadway.”

Stylish, smooth EV ticks all the right boxes
THE ID.4 is a milestone on
the road to full electrification
for German automotive giant
Volkswagen, clocking in as the
company’s first vehicle built on a
dedicated EV platform.
There’s plenty going for
the ID.4 in terms of space,
technology, performance, and
versatility. For our market, it’s
a two model show comprising
the generously appointed PRO
$74,990 that’s under scrutiny
in this road test, or the more
lavishly appointed $79,990 PRO+.
Both go the EV distance better
than most with a real world
electric ranges of 519km.
The ID.4 has the standard
SUV body shape with its
sibling the ID.5 opting for a

more sophisticated coupe-like
appearance. I preferred the cleancut
and less intricate styling of
the ID.4.
Getting behind the wheel of
the ID.4 is a tad surreal with the
vehicle sensing your presence
and automatically starts when
you sit in the driver’s seat using
the smart key.
The test car had heaps of heft
from a beefy 77kWh battery
and an electric motor producing
150 kW of power and 310 Nm
of torque. This is more than
enough and with some to spare,
to shift this decent sized SUV
with genuine zip, cocooning
you in silence, whether it’s a laid
back around town excursion, or a
lively open road dash.

exhilarating and addictive.
Standing start acceleration
provided by the electrified system
makes most conventional engines
look like slouches. A single
speed automatic is super efficient
and its computer brain’s task of
choosing what gear to select is
about as easy as it gets.
A roomy and welcoming
cabin has an abundance of
usable passenger and cargo
space. Instruments and controls
are designed with meticulous
attention to detail. There’s a
12-inch central touch display,
multifunction steering wheel,
push button start, heated front
seats and steering wheel, with the
latter adjustable for height and
reach.
Safety is paramount, and the
ID.4 delivers in emphatic fashion
with a coveted 5-Star ANCAP
safety rating. This was earned
through leading edge safety
tech such as Front Assist with
Predictive Pedestrian and Cyclist
Protection. Side Assist with Rear
Traffic Alert warns the driver of
collisions with other vehicles,
cyclists, pedestrians and static
obstacles.
All the excellent ride and road
holding traits associated with
Volkswagen are embodied in
the ID.4. The suspension sees
Macpherson struts fitted at the
front and a multi link set-up
at the rear. Both work their
magic to deliver an immensely
satisfying drive, that’s right out
of the top draw. Rear-wheel drive
offers effective traction over most
road surfaces from the good, the
bad, and the down right hideous.
The high-voltage battery fits
snuggly into the floor of the
ID.4 between the axles, with its
low centre of gravity giving the
vehicle exceptional agility and
balance during brisk cornering.
With its solid and compact
European feel the test vehicle
ID.4, had a genuine and desirable
point of difference over many
of its peers. This is decidedly
advantageous in one of the fastest
growing and most competitive
segments of our new car market.
The test vehicle was subjected
to an unrelenting assortment of
bruising bumps and potholes,
on a couple of lengthy drives on
rural roads, that didn’t show a
shred of country hospitality. I
emerged from this experience
with a deeper respect of the ride
comfort and handling talents of
this outstanding EV.
