Baffling
ALLEGED OFFENDERS:
The Friends of Edmonds
believes these men are
responsible for opening
padlocks and removing
them from implements
sheds.
gardens
• By Chris Barclay
THIEVES WHO open
padlocks securing implement
sheds at the Edmonds Factory
Gardens and remove them,
without taking anything else,
are baffling volunteers who
tend to the city landmark.
While the Friends of
Edmonds Factory Gardens
Society’s work off Ferry Rd is
routinely undermined by vandalism
and rubbish dumping,
the curious actions of two men
present an unusual headache.
How the duo, who targeted
the sheds on December 8, January
23 and February 7, opened
the padlocks concerned society
president John Hoskin.
“These guys somehow or
other have managed to get a
key. It’s a complete and utter
mystery why they’re doing
this,” the 86-year-old said.
Hoskin said police had been
notified on each occasion and
he was surprised they had not
been able to trace the pair.
With six CCTV cameras
on site, Hoskin said they have
footage of the men arriving by
car, removing the locks and
departing, always in broad
daylight.
“We’ve given them ideal
photos . . . the car they come in
and the registration and they
still don’t seem to be able to nail
them down.”
Police were contacted for
comment but had not responded
before deadline.
NO LIGHT SHED: Society president John Hoskin
(right) is puzzled and frustrated by the theft
of padlocks.
PHOTO: CHRIS BARCLAY
Hoskin said they have lost
five padlocks, and only on the
first incident did the men try
and continue to enter the sheds,
only to be thwarted by another
layer of security.
Now they are content to just
take the padlocks.
Waipapa Papanui-Innes-
Central Community Board
member John Miller was also
perplexed about why padlocks
were targeted.
“It’s very bizarre. The obvious
reason is metal value, they are
made of brass, but a merchant
told us they’re $5 each, so it
seems like a hell of a lot of work
and risk,” he said.
The city council’s acting head
of parks Rupert Bool was also
puzzled.
“We are unsure how these
padlocks are being taken, we
are looking into a new style of
padlock to hope to alleviate
thefts,” he said.
Between September 5 last
year and February 20 council
staff had to replace 33 padlocks
at community parks.
The city council oversees
infrastructure at the gardens,
including a toilet block and
rubbish removal. A band of
devoted volunteers take care of
the gardens’ upkeep.
In recent months the toilet
block has been vandalised on
several occasions, while cyclists
are ignoring signs barring access
and damaging the lawns.
Nine brass memorial plaques
have also been removed
from benches.
“That is purely for scrap.
We’re trying to get them
replaced,” said Hoskin, who
also lamented some benches
had been gouged, and rose beds
uprooted.
”There’s always something
going on, it’s very heartbreaking.”
Thomas Edmonds, manufacturer
of the iconic Kiwi baking
powder brand, commissioned
the gardens around his Ferry
Rd factory in 1923.
The factory, which was
demolished in 1990, and
gardens are recognisable
nationwide thanks to featuring
on the front cover of the
Edmonds Cookery Book since
1955.
The Showman
by Simon Shuster
Acclaimed journalist Simon Shuster gives us the first inside account of the
Russian invasion of Ukraine from the perspective of President Volodymyr
Zelensky and his team, who granted him unprecedented access. Based
on four years of reporting; extensive travels with President Zelensky to the
front; and dozens of interviews with him, his wife, his friends and enemies,
his advisers, ministers and military commanders, The Showman tells a story
of the President’s evolution from a slapstick actor to a symbol of resilience,
revealing how he managed to rally the world’s democracies behind his cause.
Anna O
by Matthew Blake
Anna O hasn’t opened her eyes for four years. Not since the night she was
found in a deep sleep by the bodies of her best friends, suspected of a
chilling double murder. For Doctor Benedict Prince, a forensic psychologist
on London’s Harley Street, waking Anna O could be career-defining. As an
expert in sleep, he knows all about the darkest chambers of the mind; the
secrets that lie buried in the subconscious. As he begins Anna O’s treatment
– studying his patient’s dreams, combing her memories, visiting the site
where the horrors played out – he pulls on the thread of a deeper, darker
mystery. Awakening Anna O isn’t the end of the story, it’s just the beginning.
SUMMER FUN: Pupils and caregivers from Te Raekura
Redcliffs School challenged themselves to paddle about
1.5km across the Avon-Heathcote Estuary.
Paddling pupils’ Sunday fun-day
• By Dylan Smits
A FLOTILLA of paddleboards
and kayaks were a noticeable
addition to the Avon-
Heathcote Estuary on Sunday, as
Te Raekura Redcliffs School held
its second Paddle to Kura.
The outing was organised by
school parents, Darren Fidler and
Abby Moore, as a way of
connecting families in the
school community.
Pupils left the Christchurch
Yacht Club at 2pm
with their parents and
paddled about 1.5km to
the Beachville Rd jetty
opposite the school.
Said principal Nick
Nick
Leith
Leith: “We’re extremely
fortunate to have such a
strong connection to the
resources in our local
area and community.”
Leith said the event
made the most of
school’s unique coastal
location.
“Our school community
is really lucky to have members
in their community who
are willing to create unique and
authentic opportunities for us to
come together, demonstrating
what an awesome place Redcliffs
is in which to learn and live,” said
Leith.
Keen teachers and staff joined
the pupils on their voyage. There
were well-earned ice creams
ready on arrival.
A picnic was then held in the
sun, celebrating a successful start
to the school year.
Sumner surf lifesavers were in
attendance during the paddle in
case of emergency, but parents
and supervisors were responsible
for keeping the pupils safe.
Smart devices
helping keep
a close eye on
bird numbers
• By Dylan Smits
ARTIFICIAL intelligence is
being used to learn about native
birds in Redcliffs’ Barnett Park.
A mobile bird monitor has
been recording sounds in the
park for the past two years. It
then uploads the data to an AI.
Cacophony Project manager
Matthew Hellicar said a major
accomplishment of the monitor
was discovering the presence of
little owls in the valley.
The species was introduced to
the South Island from Germany
between 1906 and 1910.
Little owl readings have been
small in number but consistent
so far, said Hellicar.
“Without the technology, what
you get is anecdotal evidence.
People might hear something at
night time,” he said.
“As soon as we know what
we’re trying to protect, we know
where to focus our efforts to
PARK RESIDENT: The little
owl’s presence in Barnett
Park was confirmed by
Cacophony’s bird monitor.
support breeding habitats.”
Invented in 2016, the so-called
‘cacophonator’ analyses bird
songs which then identifies
the species and detects sound
volume.
“It gives you a measure of the
population. It’s impossible to
tell specifically how many of
each bird you’re hearing, but it’s
a sample of the population that
DEDICATED: Cacophony Project manager Matthew Hellicar is deeply involved in
conservation efforts across Canterbury, playing a role in the Banks Peninsula Conservation
Trust and the Summit Road Society.
tells you whether the population
is doing well or not.”
The monitor will have to run
for several more years before
more accurate estimates of
population changes are made,
but the technology already gives
volunteers an idea of what birds
are in the park, said Hellicar.
There are about eight species
confirmed in the park from
native silvereyes to bellbirds and
swallows.
Silvereyes are the individual
species with the highest amount
of sounds recorded with more
than 200 confirmed readings
since the monitor was installed.
SMART DEVICES: The ‘cacophonator’ is an AI-equipped
bird audio monitor. It distinguishes between bird species
and supplies a population estimate based on the volume
of bird song. Right, cacophony’s powerful thermal camera
uses AI to make visual detections and classifications of
predators and native birds.
“And if you could just clip his nails….”
Nail Clipping for Pets - Pampering Pedicure or Torturous Trim…
As veterinarians, we often find ourselves
balancing the importance of medical
treatment with the emotional wellbeing
of our furry patients. A common
example of this delicate balance is nail
trimming.
This seemingly benign request that
can be quick and simple to perform in
a well-trained pet, can also strike fear
into the hardiest of vets and nurses,
as we realise that nail trimming can
be a significant source of stress and
anxiety for many animals making it
a challenging procedure to carry out
effectively.
Nail care is an important aspect of
pet health. When nails are kept at the
proper length, it allows our pets to move
around freely and maintain their natural
gait. Long nails can push the toes up or
to the side, changing the conformation and mechanics
of the feet and legs, they can also be more likely to
become torn or cracked. Whilst it is important to keep
our pets’ nails trimmed to prevent these problems, nail
trimming is almost never an urgent matter.
Elective procedures should be carried out in a way
that preserves the relationship between the veterinary
team and the patient. Heavy-handed restraint should
never be used as this can exacerbate the stress and
anxiety experienced by our pets. It also risks physical
injury to the animal or people handling them. For
many patients, nail trimming is or has been a traumatic
experience (for example a nail being cut to the quick,
causing pain) and this association can carry over into
other aspects of veterinary care if not handled properly.
Just as people have varying sensitivities to touch, so do
our pets. We encourage pet owners to take the time to
gradually condition their pets to accept
handling of their feet and nail trimming
at home. This can involve gentle
handling, distraction with treats, and
introducing the sensation of touch and
use of equipment that feels different
on their paws gradually. Alternative
options for keeping nails short are also
available. These include scratch boards
which dogs can be trained to use at
home.
If a pet is particularly sensitive to nail
trimming or refuses to tolerate it despite
gentle handling, we may recommend
medical treatment with anxietyreducing
medications or a degree of
sedation. Our goal is always to carry out
the procedure safely and effectively,
without causing unnecessary stress to
the animal.
At Kowhai Vet, we are committed to providing
compassionate and thoughtful care to all our
patients. We understand that even routine procedures
like nail trimming require careful consideration and
a personalised approach. Our team is dedicated
to ensuring that every pet leaves our clinic feeling
comfortable, cared for, and ready to face the world
with their best paw forward.
UNITED: Volunteers from the Cacophony Project with members of the Barnett Park
regreening group and Predator Free Redcliffs. The organisations work together with the
overall goal of increasing the native bird population in Barnett Park.
Cacophony also wants to help
attract more native species like
tūī.
The current AI distinguishes
between 15 bird species,
providing a method of
monitoring species diversity in
the park.
The Cacophony Project provides
data to the park’s regreening group
and Predator Free Redcliffs as part
of an effort to protect native birds.
Hellicar joined Cacophony
and other groups like the
Summit Road Society in 2016
after moving from the United
Kingdom.
“My first realisation when I
got involved with our trapping
and monitoring processes in
New Zealand was that our data is
really poor.”
“We’re building the cacophony
index of how loud the birdsong is.”
There are six volunteers in
the park regreening group who
regularly monitor the artificial
intelligence’s analysis, said
Hellicar.
The volunteers listen to the
monitor recordings and confirm
whether the artificial intelligence
is correct in identifying the
species.
“That’s how the AI is learning,
so it’s really critical.”
TWO YEAR 13 students were
the recipients of scholarships
from the Ferrymead Rotary and
Linwood Woolston Rotary clubs.
Hannah Watson and David
Templeton from Te Aratai
College attended the Rotary
national science and technology
forum in Auckland.
Both Watson and Templeton
described the forum as “lifechanging.”
Watson has returned with
a focus on completing an
agricultural degree at Lincoln
University, rather than
physiotherapy or veterinary
nursing.
She has been interested in the
problems of climate change and
feels an agricultural course will
support her goal of researching
sustainable technology and
cures for diseases.
Templeton still intends to
study mathematics and music
but will include science subjects
in his degree.
He particularly enjoyed
meeting and working with
students from throughout New
Zealand who are focused on and
committed to science studies.
Watson and Templeton
found the visits to technology
companies and Auckland
University both educational
and fun. They were given
experiments to take part in
such as timing running on a
treadmill, and food technology
Batch cook to save time and effort
MAXIMISE YOUR kitchen
efforts, minimise food waste
effortlessly and skip the daily
hassle of cooking from scratch
with the beauty of batch cooking,
suggest the folks at Love Food
Hate Waste.
Setting aside a few hours on
the weekend or your day off to
cook a couple bulk meals will
save you the daily stresses of
preparing meals from scratch.
Imagine coming home after a
long day to find a freezer stocked
with ready-to-heat meals for
dinner and saving money by not
having to buy lunch for work. All
that is needed is a quick reheat!
Cooking in bulk can also help
you stretch your dollars further
while having the satisfaction of
a well-balanced, home-cooked
meal.
When packing food away,
we recommend cooling before
putting in the fridge, otherwise
they will raise the temperature of
the fridge and this may be a food
safety risk. Always remember to
get your meals in the fridge within
two hours of cooking. Then
transfer into the freezer once
cooled from the fridge, putting
hot food in the freezer may cause
foods around it to defrost, which
may also cause a food safety risk.
Ready to try out batch
cooking? You may already be
cooking meals that work well
cooked in bigger batches, such
as casseroles, chilli mixes, or
spaghetti bolognese, here are a
few more ideas to get the meal
planning started.
Stews and soups: Chicken
stew, potato and leek soup,
gumbo, lentil and coconut soup,
or minestrone are all excellent
options.
Curries: Butter chicken, beef
rendang, vege stalk and kumara,
rogan josh, Thai green or red
curry, a massaman curry, whatever
your favourite is, they are
great options that can be made in
large quantities and frozen.
Casseroles and slow-cooked
meals: Whether it’s a sausage
casserole, shepherd’s pie, a
Moroccan chicken casserole,
casseroles are perfect for batch
cooking.
Chowders: Corn chowder,
fish or seafood chowder are all
comforting options that freeze
and reheat well.
Rice or grain bowls: Prepare
a generous batch of rice or your
choice of grain, such as quinoa,
and pair them with different proteins
and vegetables. Just be sure
to cool your rice quickly so it’s
safe to eat. Risotto and jambalaya
are also great rice dishes that suit
batch cooking.
Baked pasta dishes: Make a
big tray of lasagna, macaroni and
cheese, or your favourite pasta
bakes, and portion into smaller
servings. Try out our versatile
creamy one-pot pasta recipe, use
it as a starting point and add or
swap out ingredients that suit
your household and make it your
own.
Stir-fries: Cook up a variety of
stir-fried vegetables and proteins,
pair them with your favourite
sauces and seasonings, and serve
with rice or noodles.
Creamy one-pot pasta
Ingredients
½ packet (250g) dried pasta
400g cooked shredded chicken
2-3 cups chopped fresh veges or
frozen veges
2 Tbsp oil
About 2 cups stock or water
2 cups milk
Salt and pepper
Optional additions/toppings
Grated cheese
Fresh herbs (basil, parsley, sage
etc.)
Extra veges (steamed, roasted,
fresh leafy salad or crisp slaw)
Method
1. Combine pasta, chicken,
veges, oil, stock or water and
milk in a large pot. Stir to
combine, then bring to a simmer
over medium high heat.
2. Simmer for 10 minutes
or until most of the liquid is
absorbed and the pasta is almost
cooked, stirring occasionally.
3. Season with salt and pepper
to taste.
4. Finish by adding your
choice of toppings and serve
with extra veges if desired.
Cooking tips
• Use these recipes as a starting
point for ideas and inspiration
to make it your own. Using what
you already have in your fridge,
freezer, and pantry and using
them first is a great way to make
your food go further.
• If cooking for a larger
family or members with a larger
appetite, increase the ingredient
quantities.
• Shredded chicken can be
substituted for 2 cans (800g)
drained and rinsed lentils, or 1
can (400g) drained canned fish.
If using canned fish, mix through
at the end.

Cupra Born the wild child of the EV world
VIBRANCY, FLAIR, and
passion are deeply embedded into
the DNA of the Spanish, and its
only automotive manufacturer,
Volkswagen owned Seat, have
created an electric car, that is an
automotive expression of those
qualities.
It’s the small to mid-size Cupra
Born, the performance division
of Seat and sits on Volkswagen’s
impressive MEB platform
designed exclusively for EVs.
This compact Spanish dynamo
shares this platform with the
Skoda Enyaq and Volkswagen
ID.4 and soon to be launched
here smaller ID.3, that’s similar
in size to the Cupra Born.
The Cupra Born is the wild
child of the Seat family and
putting brand on the map here,
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
after years of living in the shadow
of its higher profile Volkswagen
and Skoda siblings.
A fun, affordable, quality
European performance hatch
brimming with personality,
the $74,990 Cupra Born EV is a
genuine x-factor vehicle, without
the usual mega price tag.
It looks the part with LED
Daytime Running Lights
with unique signature Full
LED headlights, and 19-inch
Copper Typhoon alloy wheels.
Completing the picture are
aerodynamic side sills, floating
C-pillar and Copper CUPRA
badging. All this made the
test vehicle a bit of a people
magnet when it was parked up,
most knowingly nodding their
approval.
Ratings out of 10: Performance 9 Handling 8; Build Quality
8; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 7; Value for money
7; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 8.5
The test car had heaps of heft
from a beefy 77kWh battery
and an electric motor producing
150 kW of power and 310 Nm
of torque. However, the Cupra
has a performance trick up its
sleeve with E-Boost that its ID.4
and Enyaq siblings miss out on.
This maximises acceleration and
enhances all round performance.
The vehicles standard battery
is good for a healthy 150kW, but
with e-Boost standard on Born
models sold here, that figure
surges to 170kW, enough to
propel the car from 0-100 km/h
in a snappy 6.6 seconds. This
is activated via a Drive Profile
button. E-Boost works its magic
for a maximum of 30 seconds to
protect the battery, but accessible
at any time, depending on the
charge state of the battery and its
temperature.
There’s a genuine performance
edge to the Born with its rapid
acceleration both off the mark,
and once on the move, and boy
does it move!
With an undeniable energy and
urgency about this electric power
train it’s one that performance
car enthusiast driver are Born to
love.
The cabin is smaller than both
the ID.4 and Enyaq, with this
pair a better choice if load and
people carrying capacity are
important. However, it is well
appointed with a floating 12-
inch touchscreen, multi-colour
ambient lighting, dual-zone
climate control air conditioning
and split folding rear seats
with ski hatch. Keeping you
connected is a 12-inch colour
touchscreen including Bluetooth,
2 USB-C ports and integrated
voice control wireless phone
charger.
Having the high-voltage
battery located in the floor
between the axles provides the
almost perfect low centre of
gravity, for optimum agility and
balance that under pins this cars
next level road holding. Grip
and stability through even the
tightest corners is masterfully
tenacious and among the best I
have experienced in an EV.
The trade-off is low speed
ride comfort that isn’t that well
cushioned, and suspension
noise, while not over bearing
it still makes it presence heard.
Annoying at times in town
driving, but a concession I
would happily make for this car’s
sublime handling.
