The Year of the Wedding should be the name of 2024. Weddings showcased in 

our second issue of East Alabama Weddings bring the wow factor. The couples 

featured took “it’s in the details” to new heights. 

Why do weddings invoke so much happiness? We witness two vibrant 

individuals come together to start a lifetime journey. It invokes hope and love. 

And we get a front row seat. How can you not smile or cry happy tears at love? 

Behind the scenes, brides and grooms, along with their families, plan the 

perfect day. Vision boards, visits to venues, menu tastings, dress fittings, 

contract negotiations, hair and make-up, learning name of that one must-haveflower, 

all lead to the final act of saying, “I do.” The team of participants, A.K.A. 

vendors, it takes to create that magical moment is paramount. East Alabama 

Weddings highlights area professionals that are a must in wedding prep and 

execution.

Although the Achilles tendon 

can withstand great stresses 

from running and jumping, it is 

also prone to tendinitis, a condition associated 

with overuse and degeneration. 

Simply defined, tendinitis is 

inflammation of a tendon. Inflammation 

is the body’s natural response to 

injury or disease, and often causes 

swelling, pain, or irritation. Achilles 

tendinitis is a common condition that 

causes pain along the back of the leg 

near the heel. 

Achilles tendinitis is typically not 

related to a specific injury. The problem 

results from repetitive stress to 

the tendon. This often happens 

when we push our bodies to do too 

much, too soon, but other factors 

can make it more likely to develop 

tendinitis, including: 

• Sudden increase in the amount or 

intensity of exercise activity 

• Tight calf muscles 

• Bone spurs on the heel 

Common symptoms of Achilles 

tendinitis include: 

• Pain and stiffness along the Achilles 

tendon in the morning 

• Thickening of the tendon 

• Pain along the tendon or back of 

the heel that worsens with activity 

• Bone spurs 

If you have experienced a sudden 

“pop” in the back of your calf or heel, 

you may have torn your Achilles tendon.

have torn your tendon. 

When you visit The Orthopaedic 

Clinic, one of our doctors will examine 

your foot and ankle. They may 

order imaging tests to make sure 

your symptoms are caused by 

Achilles tendinitis. 

In most cases, nonsurgical treatment 

options will provide pain relief, 

although it may take months for 

symptoms to completely subside. 

Even with early treatment, the pain 

may last longer than three months. 

The first step in reducing pain is to decrease 

or even stop the activities that 

make the pain worse. Placing ice on 

the most painful area of the Achilles 

tendon is helpful. Drugs such as 

ibuprofen and naproxen reduce pain 

and swelling. They do not, however, 

reduce the thickening of the degenerated 

tendon. Stretching and exercise 

can help to strengthen the calf muscles 

and reduce stress on the Achilles 

tendon. Physical therapy is very helpful 

in treating Achilles tendinitis. Cortisone, 

a type of steroid, is a powerful 

anti-inflammatory medication. Cortisone 

injections into the Achilles tendon 

are rarely recommended 

because they can cause the tendon 

to rupture (tear). Pain from Achilles 

tendinitis is often helped by certain 

shoes, heel lifts and orthotic devices. 

Surgery should be considered to relieve 

Achilles tendinitis only if the pain 

does not improve after a long course 

of nonsurgical treatment. The specific 

type of surgery depends on the location 

of the tendinitis and the amount 

of damage to the tendon. Depending 

on the extent of damage to the tendon, 

some patients may not be able 

to return to competitive sports or running. 

Most patients have good results 

from surgery. The main factor in surgical 

recovery is the amount of damage 

to the tendon. Many patients require 

12 months of rehabilitation before 

they are pain-free.

The Love Story 

Early 2018, mutual friends of the couple knew the chances of 

a true romance before they did. On February 1, 2018, Ashton and 

Austin met on a blind date during their sophomore year of college 

at Auburn University. 

Fast forward to March 13, 2021, when once again Ashton was 

caught off guard with a surprise proposal. Under the guise of 

being part of a photo shoot for the Watersound Beach Club in 

Watersound Beach, Fla., on 30A, Ashton was asked to spin around 

for an “action shot.” Waiting for her to spin around was Austin 

who was on his knee in his best suit ready to propose. At the same 

moment, a plane rolled past the couple with a sign that said, 

“Ashton will you marry me?” Excited with glee, Ashton exclaimed, 

“Yes!” with parents waiting in the wings to celebrate. 

Ashton and Austin knew they were destined to wed prior to their 

official engagement. That was when the planning commenced. 

They knew they wanted the expertise of wedding planner, Anne- 

Claire. Together with their planner, they booked the key vendors, 

i.e. venue, photographer, florist. 

Ashton’s vision for her dream wedding was to create the ultimate 

Barbie wedding filled with varying shades of pink, vibrant 

textures, and a day that told a story. 

The ceremony, set against the backdrop of the beautiful grounds 

of The Hamilton Place at Pursell Farms, was the start of the story. 

The aisle and ceremony arch were heavily adorned with neutral 

florals. White garden chairs lined the aisle to create a dramatic 

entrance. 

As the reception began with a cocktail hour, the guests were 

treated to an oasis of soft pinks. As the guests entered the dinner 

space, more shades of pink emerged. A stunning nine-foot-tall 

cake was adorned in florals that bespoke more hues of pink. 

Once dinner concluded, guests made their way to the reception 

tent that was fully emersed in color – pops of bold pinks, lounge 

seating and an epic dance floor. 


The couple’s personality was present at every 

corner of the day from the ceremony to the couple’s 

exit. One particular element that was important 

to the couple was having their sweet oneyear-old 

Golden Doodle, Harper present. Harper’s 

image was also incorporated into a drawing on the 

beverage napkins. The couple loved having their 

fur baby as part of their dream day. There was a 

signature cocktail called “The Harper” which was 

muddled strawberries, Hypnotiq, Malibu Rum and 

pineapple juice served as a martini. 

Harper wasn’t the only member of the wedding 

party. The bride and groom had nine of their favorite 

people standing beside them as bridesmaids 

and groomsmen. The bridesmaids consisted of 

Ashton’s sorority sisters, childhood friends, college 

besties and sister-in-law. Austin’s groomsmen 

included his fraternity brothers, cousins, childhood 

friends and best man, his father. 

Special moments of the day included the couple’s 

first look early in the day. This allowed the 

couple to actually spend time together throughout 

the day. Another special moment was when 

Ashton, an only child, had a first look with her 

dad. The closeness the two share created a distinct 

moment in time with a large embrace and happy 

tears. Her dad explained he wasn’t giving her away, 

just sharing his precious angel. 

The first dance the couple shared as husband 

and wife was another magical moment. As the 

couple entered the tent, the band was ready with

of the love felt from their guests amid an 

elaborate backdrop of pink décor. As the last 

chorus of their song began, the stage lit up 

with cold sparks, which elevated the dance 

and surprised the guests. 

Their first dance was not the last of the 

evening. Before their departure of the night, 

the couple shared a private last dance in the 

tent as the guests waited with an aisle of 

sparklers. Ashton’s dad’s white corvette sat 

still at the end of the aisle prepared to whisk 

them away. But first a dip and kiss by the 

couple complete with a five-minute firework 

finale. 

The couple honeymooned in Key West 

while soaking up the memories of a perfect 

wedding even Barbie would dream of. 

The couple resides in Auburn, Ala. 

Their one piece of wisdom exacted during 

their wedding planning is to soak in every 

moment. Ashton states, “This season of life 

is so beautiful and rushes by, so delve in each 

moment!”

Compromise is key to marriage. Meet in the middle. 

For newlyweds Abby and Zach Slattery, their story started 

right there. 

In the middle. 

The former Abby Horne of Auburn moved to Rome, Ga., 

as a staff associate for YoungLife following college graduation. 

She soon met Zach of Manchester, Ga., who at the 

time lived in Dahlonega some two hours away. Most dates 

consisted of driving an hour each way for a dessert date 

using plastic cutlery Zach kept in the glove box. 

Fast forward two years, Dec. 31 2023, or 123123, and the 

couple ate their wedding dessert with the same cutlery 

from their dates.

Reed of SLEEK by Design, crafted her dream 

wedding at The Southerly Warehouse in 

Opelika. The Chandelier Room housed the 

ceremony, rich with sentimental details. 

Abby designed a logo using the couple’s 

initials which centered the aisle anchored 

by an arch of white roses with whisps of 

baby’s breath created by Emily Jager of 

StemsbyEm. The bride and groom’s grandmothers 

served as flower girls, tossing petals 

to the Beatles “All You Need is Love.” 

Kevin Horne, father of the bride, sported a 

bow tie of pheasant feathers, a gift from his 

daughter, giving her away on behalf of himself 

and her mother, Christy Truitt. Zach’s 

father, Greg Slattery, served as a groomsman 

with mom Terri Slattery seated beside 

her parents. 

The ceremony, officiated by Andrew 

McCleskey, was rich in personality with 

a Christ-centered approach and a sprinkling 

of humor. Following the vows, 

guests enjoyed a cocktail hour while the 

Chandelier Room converted to a sit-down 

dinner. The couple helped bartend, a nod to 

Zach’s love of mixology. 

Guests mingled while studying the custom-built 

seating chart display or working 

the full-length puzzle with clues about 

the couple’s history before enjoying the 

delicious food presentations of Danny 

Danielson of Congo Cuisine. DJ Traffic of 

Atlanta spun high-energy tunes all night. 

Forgoing the traditional bouquet toss, the 

couple threw out t-shirts customized with 

their Goldendoodle Mills’s face. One tradition 

remained and concluded the evening 

– the NYE countdown – ushering the couple 

into a new year and a new life.

East Alabama brides do not have to travel the globe to find the most sought-after rings

Brides want to stand out after the ceremony as well so

BOLDNESS 

Dainty settings take a back seat in 2024. Brides choose 

maximalist style by combining multi-stone rings with 

wider bands. Options include a bold, single style setting 

or stacking rings for a chunkier look. 

A NEW DIRECTION 

In addition to bold styles, brides are taking to a new 

look by flipping stones to an East-West direction. This 

horizontal trend is best for elongated gemstone shapes 

such as emerald, pear, radiant and oval. 


THREE STONE RINGS 

Multi-stone rings along with mixed metals 

has caught the eye of brides in 2024. While 

brides will never abandon the solitaire, this 

year's brides want more. Three stone rings 

are creating quite the conversation in 2024. 

LAB-GROWN DIAMONDS 

Budget conscience with big style can be found 

with lab-made diamonds. Chemically and visually 

mirroring natural diamonds, lab grown diamonds 

can be graded on color, cut, carat, and clarity. 


COLOR OVERLOAD 

As we saw in 2023, color still radiates as an important

The influence of the reimagined Barbie-era not only took the 

big screen by storm, but also the runway during the 2024 

Bridal Fashion Week in New York City. 

Both bold and muted hues can be seen reflected in bridal gowns 

and veils this year. Layers of dimension play an important role in 

gowns through bows and lace. McClendon Bridals lead consultant 

Ginger Watkins states, “2024 bridal trends we are loving are bows, 

color, and dimension. We can incorporate bows on the shoulders, as 

a sash, on the back, as part of bustle...the possibilities are endless.” 

Brides near and far are treated like royalty when choosing a

Lilies of the Field

Taking inspiration from the much beloved Scripture 

verse, found in Matthew 6:28-33, wherein the author 

admonishes the audience to, “Consider the lilies of the 

field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet 

I say to you that even Solomon in all of this glory was 

not arrayed like one of these” a local charity was recently 

founded upon this very premise. 

As the organization’s founder, Jenna Buffalo, confirms, 

“Our desire at Lilies of the Field is to bring happiness to 

residents at nursing homes and assisted living facilities 

by delivering repurposed flowers along with love, and a 

special moment of kindness.” 

She continues, “When flowers are donated, we deconstruct 

the larger arrangements, to then create several 

smaller ones. Each vase is prayed over individually and 

my son Elliot assists as well! Our collective prayer is that 

God would bless the recipient and that His love would be 

shown through us. We always want to bring smiles and 

happiness to those who may feel forgotten. Those reactions 

are worth every hour of our time that goes into the 

process.” 

Hailing back to her initial inspiration, she expounds, 

“Originally, I was inspired to start this ministry after my 

aunt told me about donating coffee cups to a flower organization 

in Tennessee. I had considered reaching out to 

them, but I then felt God was calling me to start a similar 

ministry here. Since I knew nothing about flowers, where 

to source them, or how to even arrange them, I kept pushing 

the idea to the back of my mind. However, the concept 

just kept coming to me. Eventually, I told God he would 



have to make it so obvious that I could not 

deny what He was leading me to do. And 

he did just that. He confirmed my calling 

through Arely, the owner of Circles of 

Colors. I have a special place in my heart 

for her and am so grateful for her help to 

get this beautiful ministry started.” 

Additionally, Buffalo wanted to walk 

readers/local residents through practical 

ways to contribute, saying, “We would 

appreciate any floral donations (with 

the exception of those used in funerals). 

Naturally, small to medium vase donations 

are always appreciated as well. Lastly, we 

have two convenient local drop off locations 

(listed below) in order to easily facilitate 

all donations. Most importantly, we 

covet your prayers! Ultimately, we need 

those above anything else. I know that God 

can do the impossible-because I’ve seen it 

happen again and again, over the last six 

months!”

When it comes to selecting wedding day florals, it is imperative 

to consider the details that will forever be captured in 

portraits. With that in mind, below, industry professionals 

have highlighted various trends (as well as tips) to bear when 

designing these small (but ultimately impactful) pieces! 


PAIRING DRIED NATURALS 

(WITH FRESH FLORALS) 

Here, The Groom’s boutonniere perfectly 

complements the bridal bouquet, as it 

features petite portions comprised of the 

same selections simply scaled down in size. 

Whereas, in the case of the gorgeous and 

opulent bridal bouquet, fresh florals were 

co-mingled with dried naturals, to achieve 

a look that was both totally original and 

also visually stunning. By contrast, The 

Groom’s accent was kept simple in design yet 

provided the perfect pairing.

Floral Designers agree-the most 

essential consideration when 

choosing floral selections for 

boutonnieres is the hardiness of 

that particular variety. For instance, 

most types of roses perform well 

even in extreme heat whereas 

many of their counterparts for 

instance, a Ranunculus would not 

fare as well. As with all fresh florals, 

wilt will ruin even the best design. 

While you can save a few 

pennies by reducing the total 

boutonniere count you will 

sacrifice cohesiveness especially in 

photos. Better to build additional 

boutonnieres into the budget 

rather than risk have a less than 

streamlined look in family photos.

It may seem strange to take tips on what is 

trending in weddings from someone who was 

married almost 27 years ago. But trust me, I 

scour the fashion blogs, interact with couples 

about to say their nuptials, and occasionally 

serve as a planner for close friends’ children who 

are getting married. Additionally, we have East 

Alabama Weddings contributors in the industry 

who are always ready to share their expertise. At 

East Alabama Weddings, we find sharing insight 

into what is relevant now, and what is on the 

horizon, a primary goal. 

FUR BABIES 

Bridal parties vary in size and ages and this 

year. They also include the couple’s four-legged 

fur babies. We all love our animals, and they 

are an integral part of our daily lives so why not 

include them in our most important day? Pets 

do look amazing in photos, but they also provide 

a sense of calm. Just ensure you have a plan for 

your pet throughout the big day!

MONOCHROMATIC FLOWERS 

Splashes of color ruled 2023 and remain for the 

new season, but in a more impactful sense. Brides 

opt for bouquets of all white or ones with hues 

from the same color family. Think color wheels 

that fade from soft to bold hues of the same family 

in a bouquet. Whimsy is fun yet a column of 

the same shades makes an elegant and intentional 

statement. Jess Margeson, owner of Frou 

Frou, emphasizes, “Just as column dresses make 

a fashion statement, monochrome bouquets and 

arrangements make a floral statement.”

GUEST EXPERIENCE 

Simple receptions with cake and music 

are elevated in 2024 as couples strive to 

engage their guests. Live painting is a 

trend we see which honors the guests 

upon arrival and as they depart. We have 

seen artists live painting the couple during 

the ceremony or capturing their first 

dance. Now the guest is involved in the 

action. Artists take snapshots of guests 

upon arrival and paint their silhouettes 

during the reception. As guests leave, they 

are given an original piece of art commemorating 

their attendance of the couple’s 

special day. Local artist, Michelle Giddens 

of Michelle Giddens Art says, “Live painting 

provides a dimension of energy which 

makes each guest feel special. I enjoy seeing 

the guest light up when they pick up 

their piece at the end of the night.” 

Other elements making an appearance 

at receptions include audio guest 

books complete with a retro dial phone 

for guests to impart wisdom to the couple; 

disposable cameras to capture candid 

moments not caught by the professionals 

(makes this editor smile since I had 

disposable cameras at my reception); and 

ice sculptures which serve as risers for the 

wedding cake.

MINI MOONS AND DELAYED HONEYMOONS 

Instead of whisking straight away to a full 

fledge honeymoon post ceremony, couples 

are now hanging out with their friends and 

family and opting for a mini moon. A mini 

moon is a small, quick, and generally local 

vacation taken by the couple. Mini moons 

allow couples to exhale without the stress 

of planning a big vacation on the heels of 

planning a wedding. It may also be kinder 

to the wallet. 

Trusting a travel agent for your honeymoon 

is just as important as hiring a planner 

for your wedding. Tara Wardrup, owner 

of Travels with Tara states, “I can help 

couples plan the trip of a lifetime ensuring 

they have an itinerary that fits their 

personality along with the correct documentation, 

especially if they are going 

overseas.” 

Depending on the time of year the wedding 

takes place, a mini-moon allows for a 

more intimate get-a-way while providing 

time to go to the destination of a lifetime 

better suited to a different month or when 

you have extended time to enjoy a true 

honeymoon.

and reception space.

Bowden, of ING Studios the trend towards smaller ceremonies 

is here to stay. As she explains, “A lot of people 

only think of micro weddings as a way to save money, 

and while that can be true that is not the only reason 

people choose to have smaller celebrations. In our experience, 

many micro weddings tend to be luxury or destination 

events. Reducing the overall size allows couples 

to spend quality time with each of their guests in a way

The former Rose Hoover’s happily ever continued as it began – surrounded 

by nature, full of laughter and in the presence of God. William 

“Billy” and Rose Horne were married on Oct. 14, 2023, in an outdoor ceremony 

at Homestead Manor in Franklin, Tenn. The bride, with the help 

of coordinator Amber Fleck, crafted a ceremony based on their personalities, 

not quite formal or traditional, so the fun and celebration of their love 

could shine through. 

The couple met in 2019 while serving at Crooked Creek Ranch, a 

YoungLife camp in Fraser, Colo. Both Billy and Rose had been active in 

YoungLife in their respective hometowns of Auburn and Wheaton, Ill. 

Rose, a somewhat city girl, found the tall guy with dimples in a cowboy hat 

to be funny and fun to be around. They couple dated after she returned to 

Texas Christian University and he to Auburn University, both graduating 

and moving to Nashville, Tenn. Billy’s parents, Kevin Horne and Christy 

Truitt, joked he couldn’t afford a haircut in college, but somehow scraped 

enough airfare to fly to Texas as often as possible. 

In January 2023, Billy planned the perfect proposal at a favorite hiking 

area, complete with a Bible monogrammed with her new last name. Jewelry 

by Design in Auburn created the perfect ring using an heirloom diamond 

gifted from Billy’s grandmother, Marsha Edwards. 

Against the backdrop of Tennessee fall colors, the bride, in a stunning 

streamlined Mikaella gown by Paloma Blanca, was escorted by her 

father, Dave Hoover, and given away on behalf of him and her mother, 

Staci Sampson Hoover. Kevin Sampson, the bride’s uncle, officiated the 

ceremony which included the couple partaking of the Lord’s Supper. The 

wedding party was comprised of lifelong friends as well as the brother and 

sister of the groom, Trent Truitt and Abby Slattery, and the bride’s brothers, 

Ricky Hoover and Charlie Hoover. The bridesmaids’ gowns testified 

to Rose’s artsy inclination with dresses of their choosing in an array of fall 

colors. 

Guests walked up the slope to an indoor, sit-down reception catered by 

Beyond Details who also crafted the beautiful event flowers. The DJ, 3rd 

Coast Entertainment, spun tunes to keep the attendees on the dance floor 

for hours, including the bride and groom, who had changed into cowboy 

boots fitting of their initial meeting. Following an intimate last dance while 

guests waited outside with sparklers, the couple left for a honeymoon in 

Jamaica, carrying with them a journey of time and distances from Colorado 

to Texas to Alabama, making the end worth every effort. 

The couple resides in Franklin, Tenn., where Rose works as a graphic 

designer while Billy works for SiteOne Landscape Supply.

purchased the land in 2021, ready to build 

something. We thought fishing cabins, but 

realized the hilly land would not be feasible

I leave open the door. 

Every morning I let Hank out in the backyard. My four-legged fella. When I first brought home my rescued ball of 

yummy, I’d stay out there with him to make sure he felt comfortable, didn’t tear up my flower beds. I’d pull a few 

pea-gravel rocks from his mouth. 

But as time passed, I became more comfortable with his backyard sniffing and cold morning zoomies. So I would 

leave the door open, fix my coffee, and he would come trotting in as soon as he completed his business. 

Got me to thinking... 

I’m there as a parent. My children are 27, 24 and 19. My middle, my oldest son, married in Oct. 2023 and my 

oldest child, my daughter, married New Year’s Eve. My baby boy, not so much a baby, left for college in August. 

You see? My children no longer need me to walk them around the yard. To keep my eyes on them every second. To 

call them in from the street and immediately warn them of danger. Don’t get me wrong, it will be my job until my 

last breath to encourage, advise and rebuke. But no longer a need for me to hover. 

It's a strange reality. To be more of a friend than a parent. On one hand, you’re relieved the foundation you 

influenced seems to be standing strong. On the other, it’s an empty driveway at the end of the day. A new season 

I’m excited to explore. Ready to venture into what’s next. 

However.... 

I will always leave the house open for when 

my children come trotting through. Maybe, 

eventually, with a few more pattering feet 

behind them. Grandbabies to run around the 

backyard with Hank.
