(Adobe Stock photo) “Our research suggests that older adults looking to introduce exercise into their lifestyles may find it more effective to focus on changing their own routines rather than attempting to exercise as a couple and seeking to impose changes on their partner,” said Sapphire Lin, Ph.D., who led the trial. Part of a long-term focus on active aging underway at NTU, its results were published in the International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction. Health benefits of music Listening to music, singing or playing an instrument are pleasurable experiences for nearly everyone. A growing amount of research also shows that music benefits the brain and body. This was confirmed by older adults participating in a recent University of Michigan Healthy Aging Poll, who said that music provides at least one health-related benefit for them. Almost all (98%) of the adults between the ages of 50 and 80 who took part in the nationwide poll said music’s impacts on their lives go beyond entertainment. Threefourths said music helps them relieve stress or relax, and 65% say it boosts their mental wellness, improves their mood, and increases energy. Seven percent said it reduces their physical pain. “Music has the power to bring joy and meaning to life. It is woven into the very fabric of existence for all of humankind,” said Joel Howell, M.D., Ph.D., a professor of internal medicine who worked on the poll team. “We also know that music is associated with positive effects on measures from blood pressure to depression.” Most respondents reported regular music listening, with 85% saying they do so at least a few times a week. Just under half of older adults reported singing at least a few times a week as well, and 17% said they play a musical instrument several times a year. Interestingly, those who rated their physical health as fair or poor, and those who said they often feel lonely or isolated, were also less likely to listen to music every day. “While music doesn’t come up often in older adults’ visits with their usual care providers, perhaps it should,” said Jeffrey Kullgren, M.D., the poll’s director. “The power of music to connect us, improve mood and energy, or even ease pain means it could be a powerful tool.” Exercise for post-cancer pain People who have gone through treatment for cancer would likely agree that getting back to an exercise routine is daunting. Even if it’s difficult, though, physical activity may effectively reduce the ongoing pain that often occurs after cancer treatment, according to a new study published in the American Cancer Society’s journal CANCER. Led by cancer researchers in the U.S. and Australia, it included well over 50,000 adults, about 20% of whom had a past cancer diagnosis. All the participants were asked to rate their pain on average based on a scale of 0 (no pain) to 10 (the worst pain imaginable). They also provided details about their usual physical activity. For participants who had cancer in the past as well as for those without a history of cancer, more physical activity was linked with lower pain intensity. The strength of that association was similar for both groups. In addition, cancer patients who exceeded currently recommended levels of daily physical activity were 16% less likely to report moderate to severe pain compared to those who failed to meet those guidelines. “It may feel counterintuitive to some, but physical activity is an effective, nonpharmacologic option for reducing many types of pain. As our study suggests, this may include pain associated with cancer and its treatments,” said senior author Erika Rees-Punia, Ph.D., of the American Cancer Society. Current U.S. exercise guidelines for adults recommend 150-300 minutes per week of moderate-intensity, or 75-150 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity, aerobic physical activity.
