Into the Woods Jo Arnell leads us through the bluebells to discover Canterbury Oast Trust's exciting life skills project I’m visiting the Poulton Wood Project in Aldington today, where the quest is on to find the earliest bluebell. Although it’s still early in the season, it’s not unusual now to find them blooming in early March. "Last year the first Bluebell was spotted on the 6th March," says Mel Tebbutt, life skills manager at Canterbury Oast Trust, who own and run this ancient wood. "It’s later this year; every year the season changes a little, but it’s generally in the first week or two of March." By April the wood is awash with their fragrant blooms, and this is when the team at Poulton Wood hold their famous Bluebell Cream Tea. This year it’s on Saturday 27th April – and will be the 27th held at the wood. This spring celebration is much looked forward to by the rangers, volunteers and staff here. The WI will be on hand too, providing the scones and jam, but it is the sea of bluebells that are the natural stars of the show. Poulton Wood is a 28 acre site of ancient woodland, and is run by Canterbury Oast Trust as a Life Skills project. This charity supports around 150 adults with learning disabilities, over 70 of them residential across a variety of local sites. The Trust is dedicated to providing empowering personal and work-based experiences for the adults it supports. It is a beautifully well managed site and the rangers, their volunteer supporters and staff are busy in all weathers, caring for wildlife and skilfully running a range of enterprises from the wood – coppicing and selling firewood, making commission pieces, wooden signs and products. The team have a stall at Wealden Times Midsummer Fair this June, to showcase their work. Now finished, that sign will be used every year, thanks to a clever central section of blackboard enabling the date and info to be changed. The rangers’ craftsmanship is in evidence all across the woodland; there’s a wonderful circular mess hut made from wood and natural materials. It is reminiscent of a Saxon Roundhouse and fits perfectly into the surroundings, and is now linked to a classroom, creatively made from straw bales, which also makes it super-insulated. Dotted among clearings there are handmade and carved benches, each dedicated to the memory of an individual involved with the project. "Alan, who’d been a ranger here for 20 years, has a bench to commemorate him and a carved symbol of what he was interested in," explains Mel as we pass a nearby seat. "He loved bike riding. So, rather than a name, the interests of the person, or what they were known for, gets carved into the bench." As we wend our way into the wood we pass some willow edged beds – again made by the rangers from leftover pieces of coppiced poles, which have been chopped to length and pushed firmly down into the soil to make mini fence posts. Willow withies are then carefully woven between them to make beautifully rustic and practical edging that designates the paths end and the beds. The paths through the wood are wonderfully wide, providing vistas through the trees and allowing access for everyone – and for wheelchairs.
