for wheelchairs. I am amazed that a wheelchair can access the spongy floor of the wood. "Oh yes," says volunteer Steve, "we have an all terrain wheelchair. Getting through the wood is no problem." This ensures the wood is accessible to all the people who are a part of the Trust, enabling everyone to be involved in the real and very active work that is done here, work that brings a meaningful participation in society – and the vital mental health benefits that come from a connection with nature. "There’s masses of wildlife around," he says, "buzzards, a woodpecker, owl, muntjac deer." Some of the space within the wood is roped off. These are designated, non-intervention areas, left entirely to wildlife and are not to be disturbed. In addition, a few of the trees that die or fall are also left to rot down naturally and become part of the ecosystem. This way the Trust can tap into some funding from the higher tier woodland site and still allow general access. The public are allowed through the wood from April until September and are especially encouraged to visit for two main events – the Bluebell Cream Tea in April and the Woodland Open Day held on the first Saturday in June. The open day is a popular event, and features a wealth of activities – a combination of demonstrations put on by the rangers or supplied by other local organisations, including visiting birds of prey, working horses (that were traditionally used to move heavy coppiced material in the woodland), pond dipping, wood crafts and other traditional woodland practices, such as making charcoal. The charcoal burners are located in a fenced area within a clearing deep in the wood, where there is also a bird feeding station, a willow bird hide and Santa’s grotto. "We had a torchlight procession through the wood to see Santa last year. It was quite magical with all the lanterns lighting the way. It had a really lovely atmosphere." Santa isn’t the only visitor to the woods. Apparently there’s another, more beastly interloper here, an invasive pest that must be hunted down and culled on an annual basis. Every January an intrepid band of skilled hunters, dressed in tartan, head into the woods and attempt to trap… a Haggis. Lured out of its lair, the Haggis is eventually caught – and then cooked on Burns night, served with neeps and tatties. What amazing lengths the team go to protect the precious wood. Woodlands are a vital resource and managed well (and protected from the pesky Haggis) they become a naturally renewable system too. Coppicing is an ancient activity that enables the use of woodland without destroying it, in fact the activity of cutting down carefully selected trees to make a coppice brings positive benefits to the wider wood, encouraging biodiversity in the cleared areas and letting the light in, which enables many species to flourish. Each coppice is named and identified by a hand carved sign posted at the edge of it. The areas of coppice are industrious looking, well organised spaces that show respect for the woodland and all those that use it. Poulton Wood a near perfect example of a traditionally coppiced wood, a joyful and vital reminder of all that is good about both working in nature and within a close knit community. The residents, staff and volunteers all benefit enormously and learn a huge amount from their experiences here. "Team building, exercise, learning and education," says Mel. "We learn about conservation, about wildlife, about each other. There are the woodworking skills, we gain an understanding of process and how the wood is planted, grown, managed and used." It is fascinating and truly uplifting to spend time here. Aside from the life enhancing benefits of just being out in nature, there are so many other meaningful activities and outcomes to this flourishing operation. Together in this enriching environment, the rangers, volunteers and staff work alongside nature, supporting one another to create something very special.
