Beauty In love with... spring! Josephine Fairley selects the tried-and-tested products that have become regulars in her beauty and haircare arsenal, plus a pretty divine candle istockphoto.com/ photoguns The pace of beauty launches is showing no signs of slowing down. It’s exhausting, it’s baffling, and frankly, if I walk into Selfridges Beauty Hall, even after 33 years of writing about this stuff, I have a panic attack at the sheer, overwhelming choice out there. It has always been my mission, though, to signpost women to the products that are really worth splashing out on – it’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it (no, honestly, it IS a tough job and I’ve got the touchy skin to prove it, from trying so many different things!) But this spring, it does feel like there have been some spectacularly great launches. So I thought, for this issue, I’d share the products that have most impressed me, over the past few months. Happy slathering and happy spritzing! (Except the candle. Don’t slather the candle.) Evolve Organic Beauty Miracle Mask, £25 for 60ml. Oooff, that’s quite a claim – ‘Miracle’ – isn’t it? But actually, this has performed a mini-miracle on my winter-weary skin, and it’s become a weekly staple. With AHAs and enzymes to exfoliate, it tingles just a touch when you massage the yellow, citrus-scented, jelly-like mask into the face. But despite my skin’s sensitive tendencies, I don’t experience any irritation – just a glowier, clearer-looking face, in three short minutes. Lisa Eldridge Kitten Mascara, £29. Make-up artist Lisa’s range is unbelievably impressive, and I encourage you to explore it for yourself. As a female-founded start-up, she launches products only when she’s 100% happy with them; the beauty world has been on tenterhooks waiting for a mascara to join the Lisa Eldridge make-up line-up, and it’s fabulous: a totally non-clumpy formula which sweeps on via a wonderfully grippy wand – and if you use that to hold your lashes vertical, you’ll get amazing ‘lift’. Lanolips Overnight Lip Balm, £13 for 15g. Don’t know about you, but after the ravages of winter, my lips always need rehab. This rapidly returned them to smoothness and softness, lavishly applied at night; the blend of ceramides, apricot kernel, castor seed and soya oils feels ultra-pampering – and I actually keep this in my handbag for daytime use, because it adds a glamorous yet nourishing, comfy-making touch of gloss to any lipstick. Estée Lauder Legacy Collection, £250 for 100ml eau de parfum. One of the highlights of my journalistic career was meeting the incredible Estée Lauder, towards the end of her life. I’d grown up papering the inside of my wardrobe with her fragrance adverts, wanting to be like the women who advertised fragrances like Private Collection and Azurée. What a pioneer! Now, thanks to the talents of some of the world’s leading perfumers and under the guidance of Frédéric Malle (a perfume genius who has his own fragrance collection), five iconic fragrances – Estée, Azurée, Knowing, Private Collection and White Linen – have been reworked within the Legacy Collection, which for now will sit alongside the originals. It’s as if a shaft of bright sunlight has been introduced to these iconic perfumes, making them feel and smell completely contemporary and wearable. Perfume-lovers should make a beeline to Harrods to smell them (they’ll soon be appearing on Estée Lauder counters around the country) – or wait to sniff your way through a dinky Discovery Set, showcasing all five, which I’m told will launch imminently. Jurlique UV Defence Daily Lotion SPF50+, £40 for 50ml. I am constantly on the hunt for a great SPF that layers well under make-up, plumps while it does so, and doesn’t leave a white ‘cast’ on the face – because shielding from the sun on a daily basis is honestly the biggest favour you will ever do your skin, to prevent premature ageing (sorry to be like a stuck needle on a record, here). And it’s a tick, tick, tick for this cream, offering optimum, broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection while being extremely pleasant to use, packed with glycerine, hyaluronic acid and vitamin E. 115 priceless-magazines.com
