Book club
It’s all raging storms and missing guests and thrills and chills.
With a chic-lit thrown in for those who don’t need the adrenalin rush.
Alex Michaelides, author of The Private
Patient, is all over social media talking
about his latest novel, The Fury. A
former movie star invites half a dozen
guests to stay on a private Greek
Island. Should be idyllic ... except one
of the group is a killer. Told by Elliot
Chase (is he good, is he bad?) it’s all
love, obsession, murder ... and loads
of twists. Penguin
In Lisa Gardner’s Still See You Everywhere, missing persons
specialist Frankie Elkin is on an isolated island off the coast
of Hawaii. Her mission ... to find Lani, the missing sister of a
Death Row serial killer known as The Beautiful Butcher.
Lani is being held captive by her millionaire ex-boyfriend
on the island and the only way to gain access is for Frankie
to go undercover. But can Frankie really trust the word of
a serial killer? It’s Lisa Gardner. You know it’s going to be a
spectacular read. Penguin
With a scare on each page, you’re going to need
a stiff drink. And we’re loving The Pogues
- the official whiskey of the legendary Celtic
punk band, one which celebrates the poetic
rebelliousness of the Irish. This blended Irish
whiskey boasts distinctive notes of caramel,
malt, dried dark fruit, spices, honey and a touch
of vanilla. You can drink on the rocks, or with
your fave mixer. There are no rules! Around R329
from your local bottle store.
A week-long grief retreat on a
beautiful country estate. A raging
storm (there’s always a storm, isn’t
there!). A missing guest. Many
secrets. And a murderer. The Grief
House by Rebecca Thorne may
well be the most chilling book you
read this year. Bloomsbury
A group of friends reunite for
a remote glamping holiday ...
a relaxing long weekend. But
before the weekend’s over, the
20-year-long friendships start to
crumble, there’s a storm (obvs),
and one of the party is missing.
No phone signal, no help, and
a dead body. Twists, turns and
chilling tension ... Hannah Richell’s
The Search Party will keep you
guessing. Simon and Schuster UK
In this Michael Bennett thriller, a serial
killer sniper is taking out impossible
targets - all apparently unrelated - in
New York. The profile ... great with a
gun, probably ex-military. Which
perfectly describes Bennett’s new
partner - who’s quiet and secretive
and often suspiciously absent from
duty. Cross Hairs by James Patterson
and James O’Born ... a really terrific
read. Penguin
A college girl looking for a new start,
away from her small town, her family,
and the memories of her dead best
friend, moves into a shared house
with a trio of new friends. All’s well -
even if one is a little strange ... until
one of them disappears, and a boy
in the frat house next door is found
dead. Only If You’re Lucky by Stacy
Willingham ... great plot and sinister
read. HarperCollins UK
And the chic lit option ... What if you
could skip the boring parts. The dating.
The lazy flatmates. The climbing up
the work ladder. Skipping straight
to married, two perfect children,
a high-powered job. When this
happens to 26-year-old (now suddenly
40-something) Lucy, she discovers
that along with the good parts, there
are surprises too. Sophie Cousens’
Young doctor
enthusiastic about healthcare
Growing up, Dr Dakalo Munenyiwa always knew she wanted to work in the healthcare
sector and now she is finally living her life-long dream and hopes to serve, educate and
ultimately have an impact on the youth of South Africa.
Dakalo Munenyiwa (28) from Glenvista is a medical doctor
with a heart for people and medicine.
Munenyiwa pursued her studies at the University of Cape
Town and later obtained her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery
(MBChB) in 2019.
After she obtained her qualification, she did a two-year internship
as part of her training at Bloemfontein Academic Health
Care Complex where she alternated between three hospitals
- Pelonomi Regional, Universitas Academic and the National
District Bloemfontein doing different specialities.
When Munenyiwa returned to Johannesburg she did an
additional year of community service. It is the young doctor’s
heart and passion for people that led her to pursue the
medical profession.
“Life has a mysterious way of directing our path and we
always find ourselves where we need to be. I can remember
in high school how I couldn’t see myself doing anything else
and I was fortunate enough to choose between commerce
and health. The image of myself sitting behind a desk, working
more with numbers than people, did not sit well with me.
“Medicine is very broad but it’s a matter of understanding
your purpose and having a heart for people,” said Munenyiwa.
Her contribution to youth healthcare
Munenyiwa joined #Keready, which is a movement that seeks
to enhance healthcare-seeking behaviour among young
people and improve access to health services in South Africa.
The #Keready team consists of 10 young doctors, 95 nurses,
a team of communicators and drivers and over a hundred
mobilisers who ensure that young people in four provinces
(Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western
Cape) have access to the health services they need.
As a young doctor for the movement, her focus is specifically
directed at the youth. She believes in educating them about
their health and the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.
When Munenyiwa initially joined #Keready, she was responsible
for the Johannesburg district. Along with other young
doctors, she plays a pivotal role in driving the movement
forward.
“The young people who make use of the services feel more
comfortable speaking to a health professional that is young
and has a better understanding of the age-related issues
faced by young people,” says the passionate young doctor.
She adds that her experience being a part of the #Keready
movement has made her realise that she is passionate about
clinical medicine. The platform has also helped her grow and
expand her interest in clinical medicine.
How she has navigated through her challenges
Munenyiwa has often had to deal with the stereotype and
disbelief that you cannot be young and be a medical professional.
“Despite the usual challenges that come with being
a doctor, my biggest challenge has been my age. People do
not believe that you can be young and be a medical practitioner,”
explains Munenyiwa.
She expresses her utmost gratitude to the values learnt in
medical school, to remain professional and that is how she
overcomes the criticism and judgement. Her confidence in
who she is as a doctor has also played a vital role in overcoming
the challenge of disbelief in her competency.
“I step up to that challenge saying, ‘Yes, I acknowledge that
I am young but I am qualified. I know what I am doing and I
am still learning’,” highlighted Munenyiwa.
She emphasised the importance of kindness and professionalism
as a method of navigating through her challenges and
bridging the gap.
A bright future in medicine
With a bright future ahead of the young medical professional,
Munenyiwa is proud of herself for achieving her goal of being
a doctor.
She always had an interest in dermatology as a speciality.
“I’m definitely pursuing clinical medicine with the dream of
ultimately becoming a dermatologist. Specialising is a long
journey but I have grown older and wiser, knowing that
everything will happen in its time,” she said.
She highlights that challenges will always be there but
if you persist and preserve you will make it.“Overall the
experience of #Keready and being a part of the movement
helped me self-actualise. It is not only about us, as young
doctors giving back to the community, but it is also beneficial
for us to discover ourselves. It’s for young people by
health through nutrition
Taneesha, another passionate dietitian
at Nutritional Solutions, brings her own
unique perspective and dedication to
the field of nutrition.
Inspired by her upbringing in Alberton,
where food was a symbol of love and
connection, she knew from a young
age that she wanted to pursue a career
in dietetics.
After completing her education at
the University of North-West and her
community service in 2021, she has
thrived in private practice, empowering
individuals to make better food choices
to promote overall health.
She advocates for portion control
and balanced meals, emphasizing the
importance of incorporating fruits,
vegetables, lean proteins, and whole
grains. She addresses common misconceptions
about carbohydrates and
highlights the importance of gut health
for overall well-being.
‘Personalised nutrition plays a crucial
role in helping individuals achieve their
health and wellness goals by tailoring
dietary recommendations to each person’s
unique needs, preferences, and
goals,’ she says.
In her personal life, she finds solace in
relaxation, preferably by the pool with a
glass of wine. Despite facing challenges
such as job scarcity after community
service, Taneesha’s resilience propelled
her to acquire new skills, shaping her
determination and resourcefulness. As
she continues her journey in the field
of nutrition, Taneesha remains committed
to empowering individuals to lead
healthier, more fulfilling lives through
personalised nutrition guidance.
Shared commitment to well-being
Together, these two exemplify the
transformative power of nutrition guided by passion, expertise, and care.
NURTURING YOUR GUT
Insider tips to lose the bloat for optimal digestive health
In the pursuit of overall well-being, one aspect that often gets
overlooked is the health of our gut. But it’s fast becoming a
trending topic as people are seeing remarkable changes to their
health when they just tweak a few things in their diet. A balanced
gut microbiome is crucial for digestion, nutrient absorption,
promotes gut-brain health and clarity, plays a role in our immune
system and hormonal functioning and our skin health. Eco-Diva
Natural Superfood Skincare founder Nicole Sherwin explores
some practical insider tips to foster good gut health through
balanced nutrition and plant-powered supplements.
Get It loves ... Good Gut Glow -
Superfood Beauty Smoothie,
which gives your skin a boost from
the inside out, and is the ultimate
solution for a balanced gut and
perfectly glowing skin. Certified
organic, delicious and nourishing, it’s
packed with a powerful blend of plant
superfoods, prebiotics, plant protein
and fibre, which promote overall gut
balance, increased energy, better
sleep, a healthy libido and a glowing
skin. R357 from ecodiva.co.za
Nicole’s top tips for good gut health
EMBRACE PLANT-BASED FOODS
Load up on fibre-rich foods like whole grains, legumes,
fruits, and vegetables. Fibre serves as fuel for beneficial
gut bacteria, promoting a thriving microbiome.
Include plant-based proteins -
Opt for plant-based protein sources like beans, lentils,
tofu, and quinoa. These not only provide essential
amino acids but also contribute to a healthier gut
environment.
SUPERCHARGE WITH SUPERFOODS
Incorporate nutrient-dense superfoods like kale,
blueberries, and broccoli into your diet. These
power-packed foods contain antioxidants and
phytochemicals that support overall health, including
gut health.
PREBIOTICS FOR GUT NOURISHMENT
Include prebiotic-rich foods such as garlic, onions,
leeks, and bananas. Prebiotics act as food for beneficial
bacteria, fostering a robust microbiome.
Integrate baobab for gut wellness -
Baobab, derived from the African baobab tree, is rich
in fibre, vitamin C, and antioxidants. Including baobab
in your diet can aid digestion and contribute to a
healthy gut.
SUPPLEMENT WISELY
Consider incorporating supplements like probiotics,
prebiotics and multivitamins to support gut health.
Probiotics introduce beneficial bacteria, while
multivitamins fill potential nutrient gaps in your diet.
STAY HYDRATED
Clean, fresh water (NOT TAP WATER) is essential for
maintaining a healthy gut. It helps in the digestion and
absorption of nutrients, ensuring smooth functioning
of your digestive system.
FOODS TO AVOID
Limit processed foods (anything that is prepackaged
or fast foods), sugary snacks, and excessive red meat
consumption, as these can disrupt the balance of your
gut microbiome.
Cultivating a healthy gut is a holistic journey that
involves mindful eating and incorporating gutfriendly
foods and supplements into your lifestyle.
By adopting a plant-based diet rich in fibre, plantbased
proteins, and superfoods, along with strategic
supplementation, you can foster a diverse and thriving
gut microbiome, laying the foundation for overall wellbeing.
Remember, a happy gut is a key to a happy and
healthy life.
MY GO-TO GREEN PASTA
This is the kind of meal I cook both
for myself and my kids on repeat. The
whole family loves it, it’s especially
quick to make and it’s still loaded
with veg. Using edamame, peas and
cashews really ups the plant protein
too, so you’ve got almost 20g per
serving. I’ve popped it in the lunch
chapter, as it’s a great hot, filling
option when you’re at home, but it
works brilliantly as a midweek supper
too. Serves 2. Time 15 minutes
You’ll need: 2 servings of pasta
(about 75g per person), I use whole
wheat; 100g frozen peas; 100g
frozen edamame; large handful of
baby spinach (about 50g), roughly
chopped; sea salt and black pepper
For the herby green sauce: 50g
cashews; 75ml oat milk; 1 Tbsp olive
oil ½ tsp Dijon or wholegrain mustard;
grated zest and juice of 1 lemon; ½
bunch of coriander (about 10–15g),
finely chopped, plus extra to serve;
½ bunch of dill, basil or parsley
(about 10–15g), finely chopped, plus
extra to serve; small handful (about
25g) of baby spinach; sea salt and
black pepper
To make: Cook the pasta in boiling
water with a pinch of salt, according
to the instructions on the pack.
Add the frozen peas, edamame and
spinach for the last minute or two, so
that the veg is tender and the spinach
has wilted. Drain and leave to cool for
a minute or two, then put everything
back into the pan.
While the pasta cooks, make the
sauce. Simply put all the ingredients
into a high-speed blender with
a generous sprinkling of salt and
pepper and blitz until you have a
smooth sauce. Add an extra splash
of milk or olive oil if needed to get it
to a consistency you like and check
the seasoning.
Pour the sauce over the pan of pasta
and mix until it’s coated. This can be
served warm or cold, depending on
the time of year and your preference.
Season to taste and serve with an
extra drizzle of olive oil and the
extra herbs.
To make it nut free, simply swap the
cashews for sunflower seeds - it’s just
as delicious.
CREAMY LEEK, SPINACH & BUTTER BEAN BOWLS
I’m always thinking about different ways to get more veggies
into my meals and this recipe is such a great way of upping
your greens, with spinach in both the sauce and the broth. It’s
delicious as a light supper and feels like a mix between a soup,
broth and a stew; equally serve it with brown rice or another
grain, a toasted piece of sourdough, a jacket potato, roasted
veggies or pan-fried greens. Serves 4. 20 minutes
You’ll need: 1 Tbsp olive oil; 2 shallots, thinly sliced; 2 leeks, cut
into 1cm slices; 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped; 1 vegetable
stock cube; 2 × 400g tins of butter beans; 4 large handfuls of
spinach (about 200g) roughly chopped; grated zest and juice of
1 lemon; sea salt and black pepper
For the sauce: 100ml oat milk; ½ tsp brown rice miso paste;
2 Tbsp nutritional yeast; large handful of baby spinach
(about 50g)
To make: Set a heavy-bottomed saucepan over a medium heat
and add the olive oil. Once the oil is warm, add the shallots,
leeks and a pinch of salt. Cook for 8–10 minutes, stirring
occasionally, until they soften. Add the garlic and cook for a
further 2 minutes, until it’s golden and fragrant.
Next, add the stock cube and butter beans, along with the
liquid from each of the tins. Bring to the boil, then cover with a
lid and simmer for 10 minutes, until thickened.
While the beans are cooking, make the sauce. Simply put the
oat milk, miso, nutritional yeast and the baby spinach into a
high-speed blender and blitz until perfectly smooth.
Once the beans are ready, pour in the sauce and add the
spinach, stirring until it’s wilted. Stir in the lemon juice and
season to taste with salt and pepper. Scatter over the lemon
zest before serving.
LEMONY PEA AND BROCCOLI PASTA
I make a variation of this for my kids a lot, using whatever greens I have in
the fridge – green beans, asparagus, spinach etc. It’s exceptionally simple
yet super satisfying. Serves 2. Time 15 minutes
You’ll need: 2 servings of pasta - I like orecchiette in this dish (about 75g
per person); 1 small head broccoli (about 300g) cut into small florets;
100g frozen peas; large handful of cashews (about 50g, see note below); 1
vegetable stock cube; 1 tsp Dijon mustard; 1 Tbsp nutritional yeast; grated
zest and juice of 2 lemons; 1 × 400g tin of butter beans, drained and
rinsed; sea salt and black pepper
To make: Bring a large saucepan of salted water to the boil and add
the pasta. Cook according to the instructions on the pack, adding the
broccoli and frozen peas for the last 3 minutes of the cooking time.
Cook until the pasta is al dente, the broccoli is tender, and the peas are
defrosted, then drain and return to the pan.
Meanwhile, put the cashews and stock cube into a bowl with 100ml
boiling water, let the stock cube dissolve and the cashews soak for
5 minutes.
Put the mustard, nutritional yeast, the juice of both lemons and half the
zest, and half the tin of butter beans into a high-speed blender along
with the cashews and their soaking liquid. Blend until you have a smooth,
creamy sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Pour the sauce over the drained pasta and vegetables, adding the last half
of the butter beans. Stir to combine and top with a little extra lemon zest.
Note: To make this nut-free, swap the cashews for sunflower seeds.
Avocado toast with microgreens,
pistachios, and parmesan
The true origins of avocado toast may
never be ascertained, but the nowubiquitous
breakfast favourite appears to
have started in Australia in 1993 when a
Sydney chef put it on his menu. However,
Southern Californians who grew up in
the 1950s can attest to it being a part of
their food world long before its global
popularity. Today, the toast has gone
well beyond the basic crushed avocado,
salt, and pepper to just about anything a
cook fancies. Pistachios, for one, make an
excellent topping: colourful, flavourful, and
crunchy. Some salty cheese and a sprinkle
of microgreens are added here, but the
only real limit is the creator’s imagination.
You’ll need: 2 slices whole-grain bread;
1 avocado; 1/4 tsp fine sea salt; 1/4 tsp
freshly ground black pepper; 1/2 cup
(15 g) microgreens; 1/3 cup (45 g)
pistachios, coarsely chopped; 1/2 cup
(55 g) shaved Parmesan cheese
To make: Toast the bread slices in a toaster
or toaster oven, then place each slice
on a plate.
With a sharp knife, cut the avocado in
half. Carefully remove the pit, prying
it away with the tip of the knife. With
each avocado half still in its skin, cut it
lengthwise into slices 12mm thick, being
careful not to pierce the skin. Slide the
knife between the flesh and the skin of
an avocado half to remove the slices and
arrange slices on a piece of toast. Repeat
with the remaining avocado half, topping
the second piece of toast.
Sprinkle the avocado with the salt and
pepper, followed by the microgreens and
pistachios. Top with the cheese and serve.
Variations:
• Mashed avocado, pomegranate
arils (seeds), crumbled feta cheese,
chopped pistachios
• Mashed avocado, smoked salmon slices,
capers, goat cheese, fresh dill sprigs,
chopped pistachios
• Cubed avocado, chopped hardcooked
egg, bay shrimp, radish slices,
chopped pistachios
• Cubed avocado, cherry tomato halves,
MANAGING
STRESS
Stress, anxiety and depression have become a sign of our
times. We have lived through a global pandemic with fears
that more may follow. We continue to face global crises like
climate change and war or threats of war in parts of the world
that affect us all through our shared humanity and the global
economy. Then there is the continuation of a modern, fastpaced,
highly competitive lifestyle to contend with. How
have your stress levels been lately? Maybe stress has left you
feeling depleted and tired. Or maybe it has wired you up to feel
moody and irritable. In Stress Less, Noa Belling shows how you
can manage anxiety and stress, and access qualities like self
worth, grounded confidence, inspiration and inner peace when
faced with stress. Simon & Schuster, R470
Ouch!
Finding relief for strains, sprains & stiffness
We all know exercising is essential for
our well-being. But those workouts or
walks, runs or cycles sometimes bring
on the aches and pains. Strains and
sprains, stiffness and soreness ... which
can range from being uncomfortable
to being completely debilitating.
Biokineticist Kevin Oliver says, “One of
the main concerns that we see in our
practice with people who are living
active lifestyles is time constraints.
They are under pressure to fit in their
exercise or sports routine with busy
work, family and social life. One of
my top tips is for people to take
10 minutes before they start their
workout to do some preparation work
that will involve some fascial release.
Fascia tissue occurs throughout
the body stabilising all muscles and
tendons, ligaments and bones in
the body. You can invest in fascial
mobility tools such as a roller to
warm up areas that you are going
to use in your upcoming exercise
routine. You can also include quick
active mobility drills that prepare the
neuro-muscular system for activity.
So, this might include leg swings if
you are going to be running or arm
swings and rotations if you’re going
to be playing golf. It helps to get
professional advice to work out an
efficient routine that is tailored to
the exercise that is going to follow.
A post-workout routine is also
important. This would involve some
passive stretches just to counteract
any of the potential shortening of
the muscle tissues which are linked
to your joints. These simple, targeted
routines will help to keep the body
mobile and ready for action.”
He goes on to help us understand
inflammation in sports injuries.
Inflammation is the body's natural
response to injury or trauma, and
many sports injuries - including
sprains, strains, fractures, and
tendonitis - involve inflammation,
characterised by swelling, pain,
heat, redness, and loss of function.
Managing inflammation is essential
to avoid a prolonged or chronic
inflammatory state, to reduce
pain and restore functionality.
Conventional treatments may include
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
drugs and corticosteroid
medications. However, many people
pursuing healthy lifestyles prefer
natural and holistic solutions that are
free from side-effects.
Kevin says, “Inflammation is a natural
response to the stresses that we
put our bodies through. Preparation
and strengthening routines can
help to improve the resilience of
the body and reduce incidents of
inflammation. Ensuring that you
have sufficient mobility and stability
to undertake your chosen physical
activities is crucial.
“You also must consider whether
inflammation is local or systemic.
To mitigate against systemic
inflammation, you have to take into
account hydration and nutrition.
Reducing and avoiding refined
sugars and alcohol improves the
management of inflammation.
To treat local inflammation
after exercise, you want to look
at solutions such as ice baths
and topical remedies that can
be applied to the specific area.
The main reason to reduce
inflammation is often to ensure you
don’t miss out on your next workout
but remember that inflammation is
an immune response to promote
healing and you don’t want to
skip out on getting sufficient rest
after workouts that have been
stressful to the body. So, give
your body time to do its healing
work, especially if you want to
avoid using anti-inflammatory
medications. There needs to be
some time-out from intensive
exercise, and you can include active
recovery such as a day when you do
some gentle walking or swimming
rather than a workout. This will
ensure that you are adequately
recovered and ready to take on your
next exercise session.”
Nature’s anti-inflammatories
If you prefer to go the natural route, there
are plenty of plants with anti-inflammatory
properties - peppermint, rosemary, ginger
and eucalyptus are a few. The Aromatic
Apothecary Sport range includes roll-on,
spray-on and rub-on products that can be
frequently applied on-the-go and provide
quick relief throughout the day. The
Sport Roll-on Relief is gel-based, and the
roll-on applicator not only delivers active
ingredients that are quickly absorbed
into the sore muscle or joint, but it’s also
a mini-massage. The Spray-on Relief is
a water-based solution, so perfect for
larger, sore areas, such as an entire foot or
shoulder, with no massage necessary so
no sticky or oily hands. And the Rub-on
Relief is an easily absorbed cream that
needs just a brief rub into sore muscles
and joints for targeted relief. There’s also
a massage oil, and the magnificently
effective Mustard Milk Soak Bath Crystals.
PLANT
your stress away
Reduce anxiety by filling your home with house plants that help you to relax and regroup.
PEACEFUL SLEEP
One of the by-products of stress is tossing and turning at night. For energy
to face the day, your body needs a sound night’s sleep so that it can rest
and rejuvenate.
Peace Lily and Sansevieria are bedroom plants that will improve your sleep
environment and help you sleep better.
Areca bamboo palm is a graceful
indoor plant that fills a space without
dominating it. It is also a natural
humidifier. It likes bright, indirect
light. Allow the soil to almost dry
out between watering. In spring and
summer, feed once a month with
a nitrogen-based liquid fertiliser to
encourage new leaves. Mist spray
the leaves during very hot and dry
weather. If the leaves become dusty,
wipe them with a damp cloth; this
keeps the pores open and maintains
healthy leaves.
Text: ALICE COETZEE
Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) has
luxurious foliage and a white flag
flower that symbolises peace. It is
prized for being an air purifying plant,
able to filter unpleasant odours and
produce oxygen. It can grow in low
light but does better with medium
light in a warm and humid room.
Water once a week and supplement
with a liquid fertiliser every now and
then in summer.
Sansevieria releases oxygen at night
when the temperature cools due to
a unique photosynthesis action. This
makes it one of the best air–cleaning
plants and is especially suitable for
the bedroom. It grows in low light
as well as bright indirect light. Water
sparingly, and only once the soil is dry
as this plant doesn’t like to be over
watered. It’s a very low maintenance
plant that is ideal for beginners.
THE POWER OF GREEN
It has now been established that a colour
can influence human emotions and our
feeling of well-being. What happens is that
sustained observation of a colour can affect the
chemistry of the human body, and especially
blood pressure.
Stress-reducing green results from a balanced
mixture of yellow and blue. The colour green is
the least tiring for eyes and indoor plants come
in so many different textures and shades of
green that the effect is far from monotonous.
Calathea is one of the most glamorous of
foliage plants. Its multi-coloured leaves are
striped or patterned and it always stands out as
a feature plant. Calathea like a medium to welllit
room, regular watering without waterlogging
the soil, and a humid environment. Feed with
a liquid fertiliser once a month during summer.
Reduce watering in winter.
BLOOMING COLOUR
Flowering plants are mood enhancers,
and the brighter the flowers the better
the mood.
Zantedeschia, also known as Calla lilies,
are guaranteed to cheer up the home
with their vivid colours. Plants grown
indoors can bloom for up to six weeks.
Feed with a liquid fertiliser once a month
and remove spent blooms to encourage
new blooms. True to their tropical
nature, these mini lilies flower best in a
warm, bright room and can take some
morning sun.
The humble chrysanthemum is not so humble. It is a powerhouse of health,
as it has been found to reduce indoor pollution, according to a study released
by NASA. Find a spot that gets lots of bright light, near windows, or in a sunny
room. Keep the soil moist. Should you forget to water them, and the soil dries
out, place the pot in a bucket, or basin, with a few centimetres of water in it
and let the plant absorb the water.
Removing dead blooms, stems and leaves keeps the plant looking neat and
fresh and lets newer buds and stems flourish.
