Travis fixed his backpack
Travis Strang strolled down the street singing a song. All of
a sudden, the strap on his backpack snapped. His books
fell out onto the road. A man running by helped him pack
his bag.
Travis was thrifty. He did not wish to get rid of his
backpack. He did not wish to get a new strap. ‘I will get
some string and fix it,’ Travis told his dad.
‘String will not be as strong as a strap,’ said Mr Strang.
‘When you have a load of books, the string will not hold.
You need a strong strap to fix your backpack.’
But thrifty Travis was not bothered. He fetched a ball
of strong string and twisted it into a strap. He fixed the
string strap to his backpack. Then, with his strap of string,
Travis strutted down the street.
A thrush was singing in a tree and Travis was happy.
But the string began to stretch. The string began to strain.
With each stride, a strand of the string broke. Travis thrust
his hand under the backpack.

But he tripped and fell. His arm began to throb.

Three of his books splashed in a muddy puddle.
Travis was stressed. Now he must go to the bookshop as
well as the camping shop for a new strap. He no longer
felt like singing or strolling or strutting.
