THE EARLY YEARS
EDITOR'S
CHOICE
The art of photography invites us to see
the world around us with a different
perspective. A leaf in macro draws
us into intricacies not noticed with
the naked eye. The majesty of a vast
landscape is magnified through the
framing by the photographer. A kite
surfer’s sway is frozen in time, one of
the infinitesimal moments that make
up that one fleeting motion.
As we reflect on ZOOM’s 14 years of capturing
the Sunshine Coast’s artistic talent, we can’t
help but think back to some of the initial
photography highlighted within our pages.
Photography holds a precious place in the
soul of ZOOM magazine. Even to this day,
we always feature an arresting photographic
image on our cover. So here, our editor and
founder, Edmund Arceo, looks back on some
of his favourite photographic images from the
early years. ·
GREG LIGHTBOURN
ISSUE 5 . 2010
Photography has always been a creative outlet for Greg Lightbourn.
And although his photographic hobby has evolved into a career, it
never feels like work and brings him great joy.
With these images, Greg was exploring the patterns, lines and light
found in BC’s coastal rainforest. Today, he lives in the Southwestern
desert region in the US and continues to explore nature through
photography in his new environment.
Peggy Collins used photography as a way to connect with nature,
taking long early morning hikes to capture wildlife, landscapes, and
Peggy moved from photography to painting as her main medium
several years ago and is a professional artist. She began with pet
portraits and now paints a variety of subjects and themes, though
photography is still part of her creative process.
ISSUE 11 . 2011
At the time of these images, using digital filters and phone camera
apps was still a novelty. Always quick to try new technologies, David
Hallstead was eager to experiment with having a photo studio in his
pocket and elevate what he captured through his phone.
These days, David approaches his phone photography as a storyteller.
Whether it’s capturing the antics of his young children, the energy of
the skateboard camps he runs every summer, or the natural beauty of
the Sunshine Coast, his images tell the chronology of an abundant life.
entries in 2012: (clockwise from top) "Time to
Darren’s imagery explores depth, colour, line and story. In doing so, he
hopes to immerse the viewer into the environments he portrays. Much the
same as these images taken years ago, Darren still enjoys showcasing the
beauty, vibrancy, and stories found in landscapes, nature, and around him
in everyday life.
THE ART OF
JAN JENSEN
14

the sunshine coast magazine
J
an Jensen's evocative abstract expressionist painting is
a delight. Her restrained use of colour gives a spacious
feel to these images, as if a breeze could blow through
each layer. Some paintings might suggest distant
mountains and valleys, others the wafting of a colourful or
diaphanous scarf. Yet Jensen does not plan her paintings
in any way; each mark informs the next. She explains:
“I am a process driven artist – each mark or series of marks
creates the space for the next. Each work starts in a completely
abstract way, but eventually my responses to each layer start to
tell a story, which then unfolds as it will.”
Jensen has been using raw canvas and soft pastel in her recent
paintings, keeping the same delicate, restrained touch that
allows for a roominess in her images. She's been exploring this
space even more with installations.
"I VIEW THE WORLD THROUGH
A KALEIDOSCOPE OF ENERGY
FLOWING IN LAYERS: SHIFTING
APART, CREATING SPACE THEN
RECONFIGURING IN A NEW PATTERN,
CREATING DIFFERENT SPACES."
Her layered work has always been evocative of another dimension,
so 3D seems like a natural progression. Movement and flow are
recurring themes. Often a painting series will inspire installations,
which are, she says, “giant, 3D paintings.” Curiosity guides the
best kind of life and art. Jensen says she is intrigued by what
happens when layers of images are “teased apart and pulled into
three dimensional configurations.” As the viewer walks through,
the perspective evolves, and awareness expands.
Jensen invites us to pause and reflect on how both motion and
stillness create our journey and experience in life. Journeys can
often take twists and circle back; the creative process does too.
“In art school I was more interested in sculpture than painting and
only really started painting seriously in my 60s. I see my affinity
for 3D in every painting.”
New work will be available at the Sunshine Coast Art Crawl
(October) and at upcoming installations at The Hearth Gallery
on Bowen Island (November 2024) and GPAG in Gibsons
(December 2024). ·
New issues arise, new people come to live, even
more people come to visit. What continues to
be true is that we're outnumbered.
We overthinking humans are outnumbered,
by trees and waterways and wildlife, by berries,
rocks and raindrops. We're less important than
migrations and seasons and tides. If there is a
Coast Spirit, it is one of gratitude and obeisance
ART

the sunshine coast magazine
C
ommunities grow around old buildings and new
ideas. Grants make things possible and hardworking
volunteers and visionaries make things happen.
Harbour Gallery in Madeira Park is a great example
of passion breathing new life into an unused and
neglected space. The charming spot, a little knoll
above the marina and across from the school ground,
was recognized by energetic founding members
Maureen Marshal and Wendy Simmonds. They applied
to the SCRD for access to the former forestry gas
station in the late 1980s. June Malaka, the longest
standing member and “matriarch” recalls:
“The first renovation efforts were all done by members and a
few spouses, as in dropping and insulating the ceiling, putting
in some lighting, whitewashing the unfinished walls, adding
a sliding glass door, and installing a salvaged carpet. It was a
significant improvement to the greasy garage.”
In 1993 the non-profit organization Community Futures
partnered with the gallery, the School of Music, and Serendipity
preschool to provide labour for further improvements to what
was becoming a little hub for arts and services. This allowed
the addition of storage space and a washroom, which made the
building suitable for studio work as well as display. Nothing too
fancy, though, as Malaka explains:
“We maintain a humble, funky little space.”
Harbour Gallery responds to the rhythms of our small community.
In off-peak times the gallery provides studio space for guest
artisans, solo and group shows, as well as workshops.
May Day is when the season really starts, and the gallery aims to
have new artwork on the walls for the summer. They also try to
be open on days that there is a concert on at the School of Music
and during community events such as April Tools and Winterfest.
In high summer (July and August) the gallery is staffed with
volunteers daily from 11–4pm. During the months of June and
September the door is open Saturday 11–4pm. Visitors often
return each year, and staff cheerfully provide tourist information.
The gallery also participates in the Art Crawl in October.
Harbour Gallery wants to give the community what it needs:
“Our goal has been to provide a welcoming and stimulating
space for members and visitors. We operate on a willingness of
our members to volunteer their time and energy. Most of us are
not professional artists but love to explore new techniques and
share with others. We encourage new members to join if they are
looking for some art fellowship.” ·
SPOTLIGHT
LYNNE
ANDREG
THE MUSIC
MAKERS
T
he music scene on the Sunshine Coast is brimming with talent,
diversity, and heart. At its best, it is fuelled by communitymindedness
and inclusivity. Lynne and Reg Dickson, lifelong
performers, songwriters, and partners, have been making music
with and for our community for over 50 years. They continue to
show us all how it is done.
Generations of tots learned their first melodies and rhythms at
Music Makers Studio in Davis Bay, opened by Lynne in 1994. The
studio continues to operate with the preschoolers being taught by Sara
Munson, Lynne and Reg’s daughter, and a beloved teacher, for the past
20 years. It has expanded to include choirs for adults and children, fiddle,
ukulele, and other instruments. Lynne is passionate about community
fund-raising, always looking for opportunities to connect and contribute.
She is a member of Definitely Diva, a female vocal trio with a large
following. The Divas celebrated 20 years of singing together in February,
with a packed concert, a band that included sought-after pianist Miles
Black, and two hours of wonderful music and reminiscence.
The very name “Reg Dickson” puts a smile on many faces. Reg started
his musical career in 1973 after the owners of Lord Jim’s Lodge (now the
Rockwater Resort), heard him sing at a family wedding. He became the
house entertainer there for 13 years. For many years now, Reg has been
performing with guitar, voice, and harmonica at our local care homes.
He greets his audience members by name and spreads his joyful music
and light, sensitive banter. His repertoire is extensive, and his ego is not.
It's always about the audience. Reg's performances are about warmth
and giving.
When Lynne decided to retire from directing the Music Makers choir, Ken
Johnson took over. Also a lifelong musician and performer, Johnson says
it is hard to overstate the value of community music, and Reg and Lynne's
contributions, especially these days:
“As well as being excellent, dedicated musicians, Reg and Lynne have
a tremendous sense of community, contributing in so many ways over
the years. Since the pandemic restrictions eased, we've seen increasing
membership in our local choirs and a big surge in attendance at community
festivals and events. It's as if people now have a much stronger sense of
the value of community life. This is something Reg and Lynne have always
understood and promoted.”
Lynne and Reg have long been a popular performance duo on the coast.
They have a lifetime of material, can add accordion (Lynne) and harmonica
(Reg), and are still performing and learning new songs. The Dicksons are
both accomplished songwriters and recording artists and have released
two albums, Christmas with Harmony, and Walk in the Wind. They also
have a popular single, “Light the Lights,” which is performed every year at
Sechelt's winter Festival of Lights.
The Dicksons are filled with gratitude:
“Living on the Sunshine Coast for the past 52 years has truly been a gift
to us. We were able to raise our wonderfully large family in a loving and
caring community and have been so grateful to be able to give back over
the years.” ·
P
ender Harbour's annual Blues Festival is coming! June 7, 8, and 9 will bring
delighted audiences and performers to our beautiful area of lakes, coves, and
forests. Our local community is proud to welcome visitors to enjoy the highquality
music, the careful organization, and the generous enthusiasm of the
hosting venues.
This year will be the 19 th annual Blues Festival. The popular festival got its start
at the Garden Bay Pub, where proprietors Ron and Marita Johnson founded,
supported, and hosted the festival in the early years. Shows were held at the
pub until 2015, when the music moved to the Madeira Park Legion.
Marilyn Macleod has been President of the Pender Harbour Blues Society since 2011.
She says that while the pandemic years were of course a setback for the festival, the
audience had been growing, and she expects this year to be back to normal attendance.
In her words:
“Yes, I do see the festival growing each year. Covid was a big step back for us; having to
cancel the festival for two years was really difficult . . . I'm hopeful this year we will be
filling all the seats again.”
DAVID GIFFORD ALI PENKO
GORDON McCAW
Blues music is popular all year round, up and down the Coast, and the Pender Harbour
Blues Society has many members, both musicians and fans. When we think of the
Blues, we tend to think of a certain vibe, earthy grittiness, and male musicians. Macleod
confirms that the performers this year are predominantly male. But women are
represented! While they are still confirming the line-up for this year's festival, Macleod
says there will be at least two women performing: the luminous Joani Bye, from North
Vancouver, and the incredible Diana Braithwaite, all the way from Toronto. Trevor Sully
Antonyk will again be hosting the Saturday afternoon show and a fabulous House Band
consisting of Chris Nordquist, Tim Hearsey, Rob Becker, Jerry Cook, and Darryl Havers
will be backing the headliners.
Macleod has enjoyed the audience’s reactions over the years. She predicts that the
many new families to our area are in for a surprise:
“It is really nice to see the new faces at our events, many of them younger: 30-50.
(Remember when you thought 50 was old!) They are impressed by the calibre of talent
that comes to our little community.”
Macleod, the Blues Society’s Board, and the many volunteers love what the festival
offers:
“I could go on and on for ever; I just love the festival and feel so honoured to be involved
with organizing it for all these years. We have an awesome Board and Volunteers that
all work so great together, it's a real pleasure! I must also mention Edmund Arceo, who
does an amazing job with our website and poster designs. I'd be lost without him!”
This year watch for nightly shows and an All-star Jam at the Legion in Madeira Park,
plus a Saturday night dance at the Community Hall. The popular Sunday morning
Gospel Show will be held as usual at the School of Music. The Painted Boat will have
two dinner shows nightly on Friday and Saturday, and the Backeddy Pub will also have
dinner shows Friday and Saturday nights. An outdoor Saturday afternoon concert
with multiple acts will take place behind the Community Hall. Wherever you live in our
widespread community, the Blues are coming to a venue near you. ·
HIPPOCRATES, A GREEK
PHYSICIAN WHOSE NAME
HAS SURVIVED THE AGES,
ADVISED US MORE THAN
TWO THOUSAND YEARS AGO,
“NATURE ITSELF IS THE BEST
PHYSICIAN.”
the sunshine coast magazine
T
oday, more than ever, people want to know what they can do to keep
healthy. Here are some important lessons I have learned from physicians,
research, and history.
Over 2000 years ago the well-known Greek physician Hippocrates advised
us, “Nature itself is the best physician.” Dr. Suzanne Bartlett Hackenmiller,
an American physician, agrees. She suggests you “Grab a Tree and Hold
On” if your community is affected by a common virus.
Four reasons that Dr. Hackenmiller gives for heading outdoors, especially among
trees, to stay healthy are:
1. Vitamin D absorbed by your skin from the sun when outdoors helps to boost
the immune system.
2. Phytoncides, the organic compounds released into the air by trees that keep
the trees healthy, also boost our immune system when we breathe them in.
3. Micro-organisms, located in the soil, boost our immune system when we
breathe in the forest air.
4. Our mental health system is improved when exposed to nature. Time
in forests decreases stress hormones and boosts the parasympathetic
nervous system. This calming effect helps keep the immune system strong.
According to Dr. Richard Hobday, when the Influenza Pandemic hit the world in
1918, fresh air, sunlight, and improvised masks made a huge difference.
Hobday writes, “Put simply, medics found that severely ill flu patients nursed
outdoors recovered better than those treated indoors. A combination of fresh
air and sunlight seems to have prevented deaths among patients, and infections
among medical staff. There is scientific support for this. Research shows that
outdoor air is a natural disinfectant. Fresh air can kill the flu virus and other
harmful germs. Equally, sunlight is germicidal and can kill the flu virus.”
Reading these articles has helped me to understand my own experience. As
British Columbia’s first Certified Forest Therapy Guide with the Association of
Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT.earth), I began a deeper sensory connection
to the forest in 2016. Before that, I worked in a hospital kitchen where I often got
influenza or a cold that lasted for three weeks. Since connecting with the forest
for more than three hours per week, I no longer get sick. There was a transition
period where I would occasionally get mild flu symptoms for one to three days.
I attribute my improved immune system to my forest therapy lifestyle and am
deeply grateful to the forest for the medicine it gives me in this way and in many
other ways.
While forest air is highly beneficial, it is not accessible to everyone. Even getting
outside among city trees is more advisable than staying indoors 24 hours a day.
How do I stay healthy 12 months a year? Wash my hands, dress for the weather,
and meander in forests regularly. I will take Dr. Hackenmiller’s advice and “grab a
tree and hold on,” while respecting Hippocrates’s wisdom that “Nature itself is the
best physician.” Not only will this keep me healthy, it will keep me happy too. ·
HAVE PADDLE,
WILL TRAVEL
WORDS | ANGIE ISHAK
the sunshine coast magazine
W
ith spring’s kinder weather upon us, we turn our
thoughts from staying cozy (and dry!) indoors to
enjoying the outdoors once again. On the Sunshine
Coast, that includes getting out on the water – there’s
no shortage of places to adventure with a kayak,
canoe, or stand up paddleboard. Let salty ocean
spray banish your winter ennui as you traverse the
waters between Howe Sound and Desolation Sound,
sheltered from the open ocean by Vancouver Island.
Or freshwater float in one of the many silky lakes
that dot the Coast’s forested landscape. Whether you’re a seasoned
paddler or dipping in for the first time, the Sunshine Coast’s
waterways offer abundant adventure.
Don’t have your own watercraft? No worries, the Sunshine Coast has
plenty of convenient rental outfitters. Some even have guided tours
so you can experience the water like a local.
THE SCENIC SOUTH COAST
Stretching from Langdale to Egmont, the Lower Coast’s saltwater
shoreline is sure to inspire with a landscape of rugged islands and
hidden coves. As for wildlife, you might even spot a seal, sea lion or
migrating orca whale during the spring season.
So, where should you launch from? The South Coast has many easyaccess
ocean beaches where you can set off in your canoe, kayak, or
paddleboard. Some spots have their own unique perks: Bonniebrook
Beach boasts brilliant sunsets, Roberts Creek Provincial Park Picnic
Ground a grassy area and picnic tables, and Porpoise Bay Provincial
Park a playground.
For freshwater exploration, the South Coast’s lakes offer scenic
splendour without the saltwater spray. Many have picnic areas,
sandy beaches, or easy-access docks. Most – like Katherine Lake
and MacNeill Lake – offer extra tranquility since motorized watercraft
aren’t allowed. All you’ll hear is the dip and stroke of your paddle as
you glide through the water.
If you don’t have gear, the South Coast has both sea and freshwater
watercraft rentals, complete with safety gear:
Alpha Adventures: Pick up your kayak, canoe, or paddleboard
from their stores in Lower Gibsons, Wilson Creek, or Pender Harbour.
Alternatively, opt for gear drop-off and pick-up service at your
desired location.
DESTINATIONS
Palli Palli: This mobile stand up paddleboard outfitter delivers
and collects your paddleboards and safety gear beachside. They
also offer guided tours. If you’re new to paddleboarding, they’ll
prepare you with brief pre-launch, dry land training. Safety first!
Halfmoon Sea Kayaks: Launch your rental sea kayak,
canoe, or paddleboard directly from Porpoise Bay Beach, or
car top your gear to explore another stretch of the Salish Sea.
Paddleboard lessons and tours are also available.
WHETHER YOU’RE A SEASONED
PADDLER OR DIPPING IN FOR THE FIRST
TIME, THE SUNSHINE COAST’S WATERWAYS
OFFER ABUNDANT ADVENTURE.
LAUNCHING FROM THE NORTH COAST
Once you’ve crossed on the ferry from Earls Cove to Saltery
Bay, you’re officially on the North Sunshine Coast. If the ocean
is calling your name, the North Coast’s ribbon of coastline
from Saltery Bay to Lund has several easy-access options for
paddling fun. Palm Beach Regional Park and Willingdon Beach
Park have what you’d want for a day of both aquatic and land
activities: launch your watercraft from the beach, then have a
BBQ or picnic. Play frisbee on the grass field and let the kids
loose on the playground.
As for freshwater paddling, the North Coast has many remote
lakes that offer ultimate serenity. Or you can pair tranquility with
testing your mettle by paddling the Powell Forest Canoe Route,
a 57-kilometre, eight-lake, five-portage journey that takes
about five days. However, spring isn’t the best time to attempt
it; June to October is more advisable.
Heads up: most North Coast lakes – like Inland Lake and Lois
Lake – require driving on gravelled forest service roads to reach
an access point. If you’re not up for that, Mowat Bay Provincial
Park in Powell Lake is an effortless drive on a paved street.
Need to rent your watercraft on the North Coast? Hit up Palli
Palli’s mobile North Coast service for sea or lake paddleboards,
kayaks, and tours. Or try Powell River Sea Kayak for everything
from ocean kayak rentals to multi-day tours to a luxe kayaking
and wilderness resort experience in Desolation Sound.
With all this in mind, go forth this spring season and explore the
Sunshine Coast’s natural grandeur from the water. Have paddle,
will travel. ·
he simplicity of the rice grain has
filled our bellies for thousands
of years. Arborio, the rice used
specifically for risotto-style dishes,
is an Italian, short-grain rice with a
high starch content, which provides
a creamy and chewy finish.
Arborio is a versatile cooking staple. It is
easy to cook with and pairs with virtually
every flavour combination, making it handy
to have as a pantry staple. It’s inexpensive,
and I don’t know of anyone who doesn’t like
rice. You can make it in large batches for a
crowd, and it’s easy to reheat for leftovers.
These two recipes showcase both sides of
this exquisite grain. These are just starting
ideas. Substitute your favourite flavours
and foods to make them your own.
