Forest
Impressions
THROUGH THE LENS OF DEAN VAN'T SCHIP
WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE
6

the sunshine coast magazine
Dean van't Schip has been capturing the beauty and biodiversity of the
Sunshine Coast for many years. Born and raised here, he's been carrying a
camera on his explorations since he was eight years old. His nature and fine
art photography includes land and seascapes, forest impressions, wildlife
studies, and intimate details of nature.
His Forest Impressions series, shown here, uses motion to render familiar forest shapes
and colours abstract. With less emphasis on line and detail, the wide ranging and delicate
colour palette is brought to our attention. With lines blurred, we also lose our sense of the
moment of capture, to the point where our human construct of time recedes in importance.
In viewing Forest Impressions, we are invited to consider “tree time,” ages, seasons, dawns
and dusks, and an unfamiliar and soulful way of being.
"I'm very excited about my Forest Impressions series. It is an ongoing exploration of the
beauty and soul of our forests. I include motion in many of these images in an attempt to
capture the true essence of these magnificent life forms."
Dean’s work is featured in the book The Sunshine Coast by Howard White (Harbour
Publishing), and many of his images have been used worldwide in publications, books,
calendars, and magazines. His photography has frequently been exhibited in galleries and
shows on the Sunshine Coast. ·
ART
THE ART OF MEGHAN HILDEBRAND
WORDS | MEGHAN HILDEBRAND
the sunshine coast magazine
I love my small town streets, the fading facades and how sunset
lights up shop windows, redirecting shadows and illuminating
hidden passages. I love the forest and mountains that lurk
beyond our backyards, sheltering a multitude of lives and
mysteries, and I love the ocean at my feet, with its ever-changing
moods and colours. With my paintings, I try to explode these
sensations of wonder, beyond representation of the actual thing
or place. I bring in graphic devices that flip the perspective from
day into night or from above to below, and use the delineation
between shapes to frame views of possible, simultaneous
realities. I draw from a growing roster of symbolic shapes to add
explanation and narrative to these exploded views. Triangles
can represent trees or tents. Bottle shapes imitate towers or
smokestacks. Anthropomorphized forms represent feelings or
community, returning the gaze of the viewer.
The daughter of an artist and an underground miner, I grew up in
northern Canada trying to reconcile two realities - one where the
land is to be worshipped and memorized in art, one where the
land exists to be cut up and sold. I currently reside in the qathet
Regional District, on the traditional territory of the Tla’amin
Nation on the Sunshine Coast. ·
“Meghan is very much aware of the structure of painting in
terms of space and colour, moving with confidence between
the abstraction of surface and the illusion of depth embodied
in the work to serve the lively content. She accomplishes
this with fresh innovations for each work, and although her
presence in undeniable, there is no sense of mere repetition
but rather continuous expansion of symbolic ideas.”
the sunshine coast magazine
When I left everything behind at age 50
—8 years ago—the world had stopped
making sense to me. Whales with bellies
full of car parts found dead on shores,
fish contaminated by plastics and
mercury. Climate change threatening not just us, but future
generations. I was disillusioned with the state of the world
and had lost faith in the resilience of the human spirit.
I needed to check out, in order to check in.
I’m no stranger to remote and challenging locations—I’ve
filmed in the high arctic and at Everest base camp, and
written books and made films about those experiences.
So tackling and filming the world’s longest trail didn’t seem
that far-fetched.
500 Days in the Wild is the story of my 6-year journey hiking,
biking, paddling, snowshoeing, and back country skiing the
26,000km Trans Canada Trail which runs from the Atlantic
to Arctic to Pacific Ocean. Interwoven with the adventure
are the stories of the communities, inspiring individuals and
wildlife that crossed my path along the way.
A story that calls us back to a place of respect for the earth.
Indigenous history and spirituality are inseparable from the
story of the trail—and on a trail built to celebrate Canada’s
150 years, that story began 12,000 years ago or more. My
own story is that of a woman whose Acadian ancestry goes
back only 400 years.
So from this perspective of a settler seeking understanding
I engaged in cross cultural conversations, listening, and
learning in the indigenous communities that I spent time in
on this journey: Mi’kmaq, Maliseet, Cree, Standing Buffalo,
Ojibwe, Lakota Dakota, Dene, Metis, Inuit, Haida and the
Coast Salish. All of these encounters occurred while I was
paddling the water routes. They are the most ancient trails
on this land.
Fur trader trails, mule cart trails, old rail line trails—each forms
another layer of the story. The three-billion-year-old rock of
the Canadian Shield on the shores of the Lake Superior is the
story of the creation of the earth. The story of the impact
crater in the Charlevoix mountains in Quebec is the story
of one of the earth’s six extinctions. The land and the water
have their own stories to tell. But in contrast to these stories
of longevity are themes of climate change which emerge
throughout the film, as weather is the backdrop to every
scene, with heat domes, raging forest fires, thick smoky
skies, and floods all part of the experience on the trail.
summer 2023 15

500 Days in the Wild
Solitude reveals what a mirror cannot. It is a very grounding experience to be in
nature alone for weeks at a time. Also, in accepting that no one will rescue you
if things go sideways, you have to accept the responsibility to save yourself if
something goes wrong. It is a very humbling experience to be a fragile being
alone on the vast waters of Lake Superior or deep in the woods on an old fur
trader trail in Quebec. But then something ancient wakes up in your DNA, and
you feel more connected to life than you ever have.
My solitude was occasionally relieved by sharing parts of the trail with fifteen
women. Five are indigenous women, five are queer women. Four of the women
joined me at least twice on the journey and stayed for at least two weeks. All
four are close friends and all between 40 and 60 years old.
These women experienced some extreme challenges with me. Jenica and I
were stranded in the middle of a 1200km wilderness paddle after a massive
snowstorm and unseasonal cold temperatures froze the water of the lake we
were paddling. Snowshoeing the Voyageur trail in the woods above Huron
Lake in winter we also ran out of food because the unexpected difficulty of the
trail added days to the journey. In 2019 Louisa and I paddled the 4000km to
Tuktoyaktuk, encountering wildfires and aggressive wildlife, while also dealing
emotionally with the deaths of two people also on the same trail. One drowned,
the other was killed by a grizzly bear, and this had a profound effect on us.
And then there all the many different times when I was helped by strangers.
As an example, I got lost at night in a bad storm in Nova Scotia. I was terrified.
Never a good feeling lost alone in the woods. I was pushing my heavily packed
mountain bike up what was a dirt hill but now a streaming brown river. Then I
saw distant lights coming towards me, and in my fearful state, instead of seeing
help, I saw only my vulnerability as a woman alone in the middle of nowhere. I
saw two men in camouflage, with hunting guns, drinking rum. I didn’t want to
trust them, but my fears were quickly dispelled by these two very kind people
who brought me to shelter and warmth, fed me a meal of deer meat, and smoked
a cigar with me. They showed me on maps where I was, where I made a wrong
turn and the next morning brought me back to reconnect to the trail.
On the very last paddle of the trail, I battled huge swells on the Salish Sea before
arriving on a beach in Victoria, a short walk from the mile zero marker. The
daughter of the late Chief of the Songhee people, Cecelia Dick, was on the shore
awaiting my arrival and welcomed me to shore, while tears ran down my face as
I recognized that the physical journey was done.
And now I have been working with a team of producers, editors, graphics and
animation people, a composer, and a sound designer, all dedicating their time
and experience to help me create a great feature film out of 800 hours of
footage and thousands of stills. Support has come from a long list of individuals,
government agencies, foundations, our distributor Elevation Pictures and our
broadcast partner Paramount+.
I was profoundly changed by this experience:
When I left, my spirit had been broken, I wanted to be alone and I pushed love
away. But in the fourth year of the journey I began a relationship with a woman
who has been my friend for a decade. By the end of this extraordinary journey
I have found love, hope and a passion to share a story that connects us all to
each other and to the past and the future. ·
The only constant
is change and the Coast is
changing, just like everywhere.
New issues arise, new people
come to live, even more people
come to visit. What continues to
be true is that we're outnumbered.
We overthinking humans are
outnumbered, by trees and
waterways and wildlife, by berries,
rocks and raindrops. We're less
important than migrations and
seasons and tides. If there is a
Coast Spirit, it is one of gratitude
and obeisance to these aspects
of living here that matter and that
are increasingly rare in the human
experience of the world.
How lucky are we?
DESTINATIONS
Stay Wilder
A Natural Reset
WORDS | SUZANNE LAURIE
PHOTOGRAPHY | DOLF VERMEULEN
18

Nestled in a 160-acre forest just 15 minutes north of Sechelt,
Stay Wilder is an off-grid eco-glamping resort serious about
offering planet-first solutions in an environment where
guests are encouraged to nourish their well-being by
reconnecting to the natural world around them.
The entire experience is designed around sustainability and wellness.
The six geodesic domes, chosen for their unique structural properties
and minimal environmental impact, offer simple but luxurious amenities
from local providers and companies who share a commitment to ecofriendly
practices. The decks are made of up-cycled railway ties from
the decommissioned Engelwood railway on Vancouver Island; the
furniture from old growth Douglas fir recovered from homes and buildings
demolished in Vancouver.
Power to each dome comes from a portable battery system that
recharges from an onsite solar grid. During their stay, guests have enough
power to recharge technology or make a morning espresso, and as they
use that power, they get a digital readout on consumption and kilowatt
hours remaining. Power and water resources are provided in a way that
empowers guests to learn to conserve without sacrificing comfort. Each
dome has a private toilet, bathing ritual kit, shower, and outdoor sink. The
Stay Wilder “bathing ritual” invites guests to try a traditional dry brush
scrub to increase circulation, followed by a bucket bath, and a 1–3 minute
hot shower.
Another unique aspect of Stay Wilder is that they only offer 3, 4, and 7
day stays because they believe so strongly in the “3 Day Effect”, a term
made popular by journalist and author Florence Williams in her book The
Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative.
The studies behind the book explore how spending time in nature can lead
to positive physiological and psychological changes including reduced
stress levels, improved mood, enhanced creativity, and an overall sense
of well-being.
The Sunshine Coast, close enough to modern conveniences but steeped
in natural beauty, is a perfect fit for the Stay Wilder experience, and guests
will find plenty to do during their stay. Some prefer to disconnect from
technology, rest and relax, while others prefer to explore the area. The
coast communities have it all: incredible hiking and biking trails, lakes and
ocean beaches, indigenous tours, local farms and farmer’s markets, and
fabulous cafés and restaurants.
Stay Wilder was created on a belief that if you’re serious about saving
the planet, you’ve got to experience what’s worth saving. Simply knowing
about climate change is not the same as practicing sustainability daily.
With this in mind, Stay Wilder designed a lab-like environment, in which
guests not only reset themselves, but also learn to live more gently once
they leave. ·
40 teachers, finds the wherewithal to organize the International
Choral Kathaumixw, and has done so every two years since
1984 (except when COVID interrupted).
And it is all to celebrate singing.
Singing is health-building, relationship-building, community-building.
Melody, lyric, and harmony are an ancient and potent triumvirate that
delivers message and experience in a memorable way that is accessible
across cultures. This year's guests and participants came from BC and
all over North America. Never merely a series of concerts, the five-day
festival includes common song singing, choral and vocal solo competitions,
conductor’s seminars, and social events. Choirs were billeted in local homes
and in commercial lodgings. This meant that for five days the town was
filled with the universal language of song—often erupting spontaneously—
in restaurants and at social events, indoors and out. No wonder the festival
is embraced wholeheartedly by townspeople.
Our International Choral Kathaumixw celebrates place as much as song.
Festival participants delight in our warm, calm seas, inviting lakes, accessible
nature, and unique cultural offerings. This year's remarkable weather made
it especially delightful for visitors to experience the peace and inspiration of
our natural surroundings. Among the highlights of the 2023 International
Choral Kathaumixw was the presentation of a commemorative paddle,
created by Tla'amin carver Craig Galligos, to the “2023 Choir of the World.”
This year’s winner, the Saskatchewan Children’s Choir, was chosen from all
those choirs awarded first place in their various categories. ·
At the opposite end of the Coast we have THE PINK HOUSE BISTRO,
4 located in Lower Gibsons. This intimate bistro, decorated in beautiful
jewel tones, opens Wednesday through Saturday evenings for dinner
only. After being seated, you will want to pick from a list of hand-crafted cocktails and
fauxtails as you wait for your first dish to arrive. Plates are centred around sharing,
and there are gluten-free, nut-free, vegetarian, and vegan options. While a small
menu, the dishes are expertly crafted and full of complex flavours. Their hummus is
creamy with flecks of fresh herbs and pickled chickpeas. The Crispy Za’tar Chicken
is moist and subtly sweet from fermented garlic honey. Round out the evening
RUBY LAKE RESORT AT
30
WORDS | NATALIE FINDLAY
30
Can you believe that it has been 30 years since Aldo Cogrossi,
his brother Giorgio, and his parents moved to the Sunshine
Coast and bought Ruby Lake Resort? A lot has changed
since then, but not the bond of the family business, their
commitment to the land, celebrating community, serving
their guests, and providing delicious Italian food.
It was in December 1992 that Aldo joined some friends on a fishing trip to the
Sunshine Coast from Milan, Italy. He fell in love with the area and noticed a
restaurant and motel that was for sale. Immediately he became determined
to find a way to move to Canada and buy this property.

In January 1993, speaking no English and with the help of a translator, he
flew back to Canada and made his dream come true. The rest of his family
joined him and by April of the same year, the motel and restaurant reopened.
It was a tough go in the early years. He was living his dream, but it required
all his time and commitment to make it work. For approximately the first ten
years the motel and restaurant remained open all year for breakfast, lunch,
and dinner. Then things slowed down, which was a respite, until it was too
slow and he wondered if they would make it. In 2015 the clientele picked
back up, and in the last few years people have renewed their appreciation for
the value of this pristine piece of land that the Cogrossi family has worked
so hard to maintain. Be it first time guests or those that have returned every
summer for over 25 years, Aldo and family are here to share this oasis
with everyone.
A strong family and team are at the helm of their success. Paolo, one of
Aldo’s sons, is his right-hand man in the kitchen. His mother Gabriella (82) is
committed to doing the administration and bookkeeping. His father Antonio
(86), whose nickname is “The Sheriff,” polices the parking lot and looks after
the painted turtles. Brigit, Aldo’s wife, tends to the flower gardens, bakes
for the restaurant, and teaches yoga on the lakeside platform, five times a
week between June 2 nd and September 2 nd . Spots fill up quickly, so make
sure to reserve ahead of time. Plus, there are 25 people on staff; many have
been with him for years and are now like family. Ruby Lake Resort and La
Trattoria Italiana have been important for the economy in the area and for
community connection.
Aldo’s mission in life is to nurture the 80 acres of natural environment that
Ruby Lake Resort sits on. Over the years he has extended the gardens until
they supply upwards of 40% of the food that the restaurant serves. He tends
to the land as he tends to life – with love and integrity. Aldo believes we
are inexplicably entwined with nature, and we live in constant give and take
between the two. He wants to make sure that he gives more than he takes,
though. As each year passes, he falls deeper in love with the beauty and
abundance of nature that surrounds us on the Sunshine Coast.
Over the years, Aldo has met thousands of amazing people. He loves
the intimate conversations he squeezes into his busy workdays and the
connection to those who enjoy and appreciate the land he fosters and the
food he serves.
Another busy year, their weekends are often filled with weddings, space
is limited for lodging, and reservations for the restaurant are strongly
recommended. However, they still have other special events. Chefs in the
Woods, their annual Chef Fundraiser with Culinary Team BC was held on
July 16 th . This event is always a great evening of scrumptious foods from
different chefs, wine tastings, live music and dancing, all under the stars in
the outdoor amphitheatre at Ruby Lake Resort. And it wouldn’t be special if
there wasn’t a 30 th Anniversary celebration, now, would it? On September 9 th
they will be hosting an Anniversary Party to celebrate the land, the people,
and the family business.
When asked how he does it, Aldo chalks it up to love, drive, and teamwork.
Happy 30 th Anniversary to Ruby Lake Resort, La Trattoria Italiana, and the
Cogrossi family! May the next 30 years be just as exciting and fulfilling.
SPOTLIGHT
Coho Commissary
PASSION. POSSIBILITY. CONNECTIONS.
It starts with a dream. How to turn this delicious product you created into
a full-blown business? You sell your product to your friends. They rave
about it and encourage you to turn your passion into a business. Then
you realize what’s required to create a successful business, and your
dream shrinks as setting up gets too big, confusing, and expensive.
Not anymore. Coho Commissary has moved into Gibsons and is helping to turn
your passion into reality.
The Commissary has a brand-new professional commercial kitchen with all
the necessities. Each business has its own personal workspace, and the
building has security inside and out, so you can feel comfortable leaving your
personal equipment and products laid out. But what makes Coho Commissary
special is the energy. The space is filled with like-minded and passionate food
entrepreneurs.
This is a great place for any size business, from full-time work to growing your
at-home business or bringing a new food product to launch. Not having to be
responsible for every detail leaves you time to create and grow your business.
Andrea Bothma, Coho Commissary’s General Manager, had worked in the
food industry for many years and was looking for purpose and meaning. She
saw plenty of people making great food and wanted to support these small
businesses. She loves the community aspect and dreamed of a place to
express that. Connecting with Andrew Barnes and Amrit Maharaj, who also saw
a hole in the marketplace, they brought the commissary to the Sunshine Coast.
While the kitchen is not open to the public, some businesses sell out of “Coho
Alley” (the alley on the right-hand side of the building). You will need to connect
with each business individually to arrange purchase of their products. Brassica,
Coho’s adjoining community to table restaurant, also carries a small selection
of delectable pantry items, primarily from the Coho kitchen.
The Coho Commissary also has a room to rent for private or group hands-on
cooking classes. The Sunshine Kitchen can host up to 20 people with two
options for rentals:
1. You can rent the facility and do everything yourself. This is for you if you
have a business and want to create your own event.
2. The “gather your group” option, where you get 6-12 people together and
then get in touch with Andrea, and she matches you with a chef that fits
your needs. Think corporate team building events or a girls/guys night of
making food and drinks with a chef.
Coho is helping food-based businesses test, perfect, and scale their product
offerings. “You’re never too small,” says Andrea. Already, Coho has seen some
wins come out of the kitchen. Collaborations between businesses have been
successfully executed. Businesses have moved from selling out of “Coho
Alley” into their own food trucks and products have been successfully scaled
to market.
Coho Commissary is built on passion and connection. Where will your dream
take you when you have the room and facilities to support your growth? ·
the sunshine coast magazine
THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO EXPLORE THE SUNSHINE COAST THIS SUMMER
WORDS | NANCY PINCOIMBE
Our forested mountainside and trails are a mecca for those
looking for accessible hiking and biking. From Earl's Cove to
Langdale, from Saltery Bay to Lund, from sea level to the alpine,
the network of trails is extensive, and there is an energetic
and active group of trail-builders adding new routes all the
time: www.sunshine-coast-trails.com.Viewpoints and numerous refreshing
streams add to the idyllic experience of active exploring here.
Looking for something different and slightly less active? Maybe you prefer
to partner with a horse for your explorations to experience the trail from an
animal's perspective. Try Farm Ventures in Roberts Creek for local trail riding
options and mounts suitable for kids and adults.
Perhaps the convenience and ease of an e-bike is just the right mix of fresh
air and freedom for your group. Scotty's Rentals in Gibsons has a fleet of
e-bikes, scooters, and motorbikes at your service. Palli Palli in Powell River
rents e-bikes and paddle boards. The distances become much less important
when you're enjoying every moment of your experience.
If you're after something more curated and climate-controlled, consider
booking a custom experience with Sunshine Coast Art Tours. Art, culinary
and brewery tours, teambuilding, parties, and workshops . . . it's all possible.
With pick-up at the ferry and a knowledgeable driver, it's zero stress,
maximum fun.
Seeing our area from the sea is a particular joy. From a kayak or a paddle
board we feel much more connected to the sea and its rhythms. We can
get a unique perspective on our shorelines, and we can observe the lively
abundance of marine life in schools of silvery forage fish (so important in
our food chains!) right beneath us, or seals and sea lions basking on rocks.
Get out on the water safely with the right equipment and expert help. Take a
guided kayaking tour, such as a Full Moon Tour with Halfmoon Sea Kayaks,
or rent a kayak or SUP from Pedals and Paddles or Alpha Adventures. Take
an unforgettable zodiac boat tour with Terracentric to explore the warm,
sheltered waters of Desolation Sound.
Maybe an overview of our area is the best way to start. For jaw-dropping
views and a feeling of insignificance, book an aerial tour with Sunshine
Coast Air or Harbour Air. So much forest! So many clear, clean undeveloped
lakes and snow-capped mountains! Muster your energy by grabbing a good
meal at a local pub and plan your adventure. ·
