NEWS North Canterbury News, April 18, 2024 Anzac Day service delayed atCulverden By DAVID HILL Local Democracy Reporter ANorth Canterbury community will have to wait an extra year before hosting an Anzac Day service. Fundraising for anew war memorial for Culverden has proven to be tougher than anticipated, says Culverden Community Committee member Craig Ritchie. Culverden was due to host this year’s Amuri area Anzac Day service, but the Waiau community has stepped up as this year’s host. The committee launched a fundraising drive in September last year, after the memorial design, estimated to cost $150,000, was approved with the support of the Hurunui District Council. ‘‘We never really understood how difficult it is to apply for funding,’’ Mr Ritchie said. ‘‘We would have liked to have had it up and running this year. ‘‘We have had good support from contractors, who have agreed to keep to the same quotes for the time being.’’ As the Culverden Community Committee is not aregistered entity, it has made the process more difficult in applying for grants. The memorial design is based on acorten steel memorial at Leyland in England, with the shape of asoldier cut out and standing 9metres high. The Culverden version will be 6metres high, with apoppy and the words ‘‘Lest We Forget’’ on the front. The memorial will have lights to light it up at night. It will be placed in the Rutherford Reserve, next to Amuri Area School. The Hurunui District Council’s Amuri Community Committee, has approved the use of $56,000 in funds held in trust from the sale of the Culverden Drill Hall in the 1980s. The committee has received $5000 in donations from the community and a$10,000 grant from the Trusts Community Foundation. The Hurunui District Council has applied to the Lottery Environment and Heritage Fund for $50,000 on the committee’s behalf. Mr Ritchie is hopeful the council will fund the balance, which will allow the war memorial to be ready for next year’s Anzac Day service. Amuri area Anzac Day services alternate between Waiau, Rotherham and Culverden. Culverden last hosted the Anzac Day service in 2021, with the community gathering at the Culverden Volunteer Fire Brigade rooms, before crossing the busy Mountainview Road to aset of memorial gates. The Amuri area Anzac Day service will be held at Waiau. Gather at the Waiau Hall at 9.50am, for a10am service, before ashort walk to the memorial and back to the hall for morning tea. Cost of living pressures felt at food bank Kaiapoi’s food bank is continuing to experience record demand as the cost of living crisis continues to bite. Awhopping 1506 food parcels were given to hungry families in the nine months to March, including 351 food parcels in the period from January to March. ‘‘We have been able to keep the quality of our food parcels up thanks to the support of Satisfy Food Rescue,’’ Community Wellbeing North Canterbury Trust clinical operations leader Julie Best says. ‘‘We have been very well supported by the community. ‘‘We never send anyone away hungry.’’ She says the food bank has received grocery vouchers, thanks to the efforts of Kaiapoi New World, which has allowed the trust to top up the food parcels. Anew 0800 service has been established to make it easier to contact the food bank call 0800 883488. ‘‘It has been really good for people because it breaks down abarrier, as people can have anxiety about coming to afood bank,’’ Ms Best says. Manager Deirdre Ryan says the trust’s food bank has been ‘‘a real anchor for us during Covid and since’’. She provided an update on Friday to Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey, who is also the Mental Health Minister. Community Wellbeing is one of the largest mental health and wellbeing providers in North Canterbury, serving the Waimakariri and Hurunui districts. It receives funding from the Ministry of Social Development and other Government agencies to provide some of its services. But relies on public donations so it can continue to offer its services for free to those who need them, Ms Ryan says. ‘‘We are known and we are trusted and we have been here for the earthquakes.’’ Mr Doocey encouraged anyone who can support the trust to reach out. ‘‘Community Wellbeing is acommunity provider which has ahuge reach in North Canterbury and people can turn to it when they need support.’’ The trust is aMana Ake mental health provider in primary schools, and aManu Ka Rere provider for 13 to 24yearolds, while awellbeing coordinator works in schools to support with mental health and wellbeing issues. Support for families includes family social work, parenting programmes such as tuning into kids and tuning into teens, the grandparents raising grandchildren support group, and the Karanga Mai Community support ...
