32 North NEWS Canterbury News, April 18, 2024 Brother’shonours By JOHN COSGROVE The Silcock brothers, Harri and Josh from Swannanoa, shared tophonours at the New Zealand Grass Kart championship’s held over Easter weekend. Harri (20) won all of his races to lift the 0205cc 4Stroke national title, while Josh (17) hounded his brother around the tight, dusty South Canterbury track to secure second place overall in the same category. Competing in avery well supported class, race officials dividedthe field into two halves fast and faster. Harri and Josh faced each other in the first three of the heat races, with Harri winning all three with Josh coming second in two races then suffering aDNF for zero points. Race officials then moved Josh to the other half where he won the remaining races. Josh says Harri’s lightening starts were the key to his success. ‘‘If Ihad had acouple of better starts Iwould have made Harri’s task just abit harder,’’ says Josh. ‘‘He was so fast on the track which wasn’t one of the best ones I’ve raced on before, it was hard, dusty and challenging.’’ The threeday event was hosted by the South Canterbury Grass Kart Club on Cartwrights RacingSilcock’s brothers ... Stokes victory By LINDSAY KERR Waikuku’s Robbie Stokes drivinga Ford Fiesta AP4 came home agutsy second in lastweekend’s Rally of Otago, round one of the New Zealand Rally championship. Stokes, son of 1985 and 1988 champion Brian, finished 17.8 seconds behind Auckland's Jack Hawkswood in aToyota Yaris GR . Stokes won six of the 15 special stages over the two days of competition and Hawkswood four. Ayounger Stokes, Jack, driving a Ford Fiesta R2 was 13th overall and second in his class. Absent from the rally was defending Otago and New Zealandchampion Hayden Paddon, who was in Europe defending his European Rally title in that championship’s first round. Long time exponent John Silcock, from Rangiora,driving his Mazda RX 7, was fifteenth overall and third home in the two wheel drive class. Woodend’s Dave Ollis in his Subaru WRX finished 44th. Twentysix of the 115 starters were non finishers. This number included other locals —Ari Pettigrew, Daph ORourke, Harri Silcock and Sean Haggerty. Round two of the six round championship will be at South Canterbury on June22. The traditionalCanterbury Rally is again not anational round, but will be aroundofthe Mainland Championship. Combined wins From Page 31 GlenmarkCheviot v Oxford GlenmarkCheviot took on Oxford at Cheviot on an overcast day. The first 20 minutes was riddled with handling errors. GlenmarkCheviot slowly wore down the strong defence from Oxford on the back of acouple of penalties. Jordy Gray crossed the line for the first try of the day. The loose forwards for Oxford kept applying alot of pressure on GlenmarkCheviot at the breakdown, George Prain in particular had an immense first half. However, Glenmark Cheviot continued to find ways to get over the advantage line with some strong carries, in particular from Will Chaffey and Mike Keane. Off the back of amassive line out drive Nick Hyde crossed for his teams second try. Will Chaffey (Man of the Match), snatched a meat pie through the middle of the ruck, making the score 190. However, agreat fightback from Oxford, with anumber of line breaks, particularly around the ruck, saw a momentum shift in the game, especially on the back of aJesse Houston break, and ultimately a try. Apenalty put the score at 227 with 20 minutes to go. Credit to Oxford’s Ratu Uluiviti, who was a handful on the wing continually making metres over the advantage line. But the game was put to bed, with awell worked back move which lead to Matt Earl scoring to put the game out of reach. GlenmarkCheviot 27 beat Oxford 7. Celtic 14 lost to Ohoka 31 Lower grade snippets It was agreat day for the Ohoka Club. Not only did their Senior and Division 2sides pull off upset away wins against Celtic and Kaikoura, respectively, but in the Colts grade Ohoka capped agreat day for the Club, when its Colts beat Ashley 2215.
