Food has been an important theme for the first Peruvians

because of its symbolic value. The quechua word

“mamata”, can be understood as the food that sustains,

but by a divine power involved. In addition, “mamatay” is

defi ned as “mother or lady, name of reverence”. It could

be deduced that food, for the fi rst Peruvians, had a divine

value and was related to the feminine. (Olivas, R., 1992)

I choose this collection because I fell very proud of

Peruvian gastronomy. Besides, I have certain knowledge

about this topic and I manage a series of books in regards

gastronomy in Peru before the arrival of Spaniards.

This topic has been always of my interest, and I fi nd

this experience, of making a prior revision about food

background, to fi nally applied it to architectural design,

very compelling.

Even though more than the 60% of all Peruvian dishes

were created in prehispanic times, there is no doubt that

many of the main gastronomic customs and preferences

of contemporary Peru were created in the viceregal period.

(Olivas, R., 2018).

To understand this period, it is essential to review the

habits that came to America, initially from Europe and

Africa, and later from Italy, China and Japan.

Common ground empowers the character of earth and

sets sustainable strategies through the application of

vernacular knowledge using digital technologies. This

was achieved through extensive material exploration with

earth and timber.

The project is situated in Grymsdyck Farm, a research

facility with a fabrication workshop and living-working

space for architects, artists and designers.

The student accommodation is composed of two-storey

housing modules. They are designed with a design

language based on cells made of earth with a timber

framework. Some of the cells are infilled with earth, others

have glass or glass blocks, and others are empty.

Material Exploration

As for the timber exploration, some patterns were laser cutted in playwood of 3mm, to explore different geometries.

Then, they were infilled with wet earth and left to dry for a couple of days.

After numerous tests combining earth with different

materials, I found that mixing it with sand and pieces

of straw no longer than 5cm, drastically reduced the

shrinkage when drying.

A timber framework with a maximun span

of 200mm is infilled with wet earth and was

left to dry as shown in the image below.

Some handmade bricks were fabricated and let to dried

onlys supported on the ends to determine the maximum

span. The results show that for spans of 200mm, earth

would require an internal reinforcement to avoid bending.

The proposal is for the rejuvenation of the existing garage

spaces which have been left in a state of disrepair over

time. The proposal includes the development of two

semi-detached 3 bedroom/2 storey dwellings, car parking

spaces, communal bin storage and the re-surfacing the

existing access road (Right of way)

For this project I was responsible for the concept design,

elaboration of planning drawings and Design and Access

Statement and visuals. Upon complation of the Planning

application I am prepared for Detail design and the

preparation of technical drawings for Building Control

Application.

This poject in Penge, Bromley, is a four-storey commercial

building which comprises of two shops and office space

above on the first, second and third floor.

However this area has been converted into residential

accommodation over the past decade without formal

approval.

The proposed development is for the change of use of the

building into a Part Hotel due to its strategic location at

the High Street.

For this project I collaborated in the design stage of the

proeject and I was responsible of the elaboration of

planning drawings, and Design and Access Statement and

I gave a live in-person conference presentation to an

audience of 150 people.

My presentation focussed on how architect-designed

spaces can reflect and strengthen a company’s brand. I

presented a holistic philosophy to design, architecture

and marketing by drawing on my own work in designing

education and commercial health, wellbeing and beauty

spaces for the Instituto Roosevelt.
