group is led by several team leaders. All instruments
are welcome.

*Banjo for the Beginner
Instructor: Merilee Buster
For those who imagine playing banjo, but just can’t
seem to get started, you will learn care and feeding of
the instrument, how to read tablature, and the
basic patterns of rhythm and finger placement in the
Clawhammer style. Clawhammer is also known as
“Frailing,” “Old Time” and “Appalachian” and
fingerpicks are not used. We’ll discuss playing styles
(Clawhammer, 2-Finger and 3-Finger,
Scruggs/Bluegrass), but the focus will be on
Clawhammer which can provide a solid basis from
which to explore further styles of playing such as
Bluegrass. Using banjo tablature, our goal for the end
of the course is to be playing at least four simple tunes
in Clawhammer style and preparing you to explore on
your own. There will be a couple banjos for class use,
but bring your own if you have one.
