Debris to be cleared from
dump site after long wait
• By Dylan Smits
AN EMPTY section in Mt
Pleasant is finally being cleaned
up after eight years of complaints
to the city council fell on deaf
ears.
The city council-owned 1001
sq-m section in Virginia Lane
has been an illegal dumping
ground for years; residents complaints
go back to 2016.
Said long time resident Jo Doherty:
“So many neighbours, past
and present, have flagged this up
with council, that there’s been
dumping going on but nothing
has been done for years.”
Doherty said she had routinely
told the city council as far back
as 2016 of a particular person
she had seen dumping materials.
That person had continued to
dump rubbish over the years.
She said the city council’s response
to her complaints was not
good enough.
“It’s really disappointing. You
just start lose faith in people
(council staff),” she said.
Doherty complained again in
February, and the council started
the long awaited clean-up 15 days
ago. The section will be clear by
Friday.
The person Doherty had
been complaining about was
trespassed by the city council
on Thursday. But the man told
Southern View he considered it
unfair he had been the only one
targeted.
NO-GO: City council staff blocked off the entrance to 8 Virginia Lane on May 2 in an effort
to prevent any further dumping on the section. Nearby residents have been complaining
to the city council since 2016 to clean up the area.
“There’s a number of people
who used the property for
different things – storing boats,
materials same as me. I did
probably have more stuff on it
but I had an agreement with the
original owner,” he said.
City council head of city
growth and property Bruce
Rendall would not provide an
explanation to Southern View as
to why it had taken eight years.
He said staff had not looked
back into records to verify if
the resident’s comments about
how long
they had been
complaining
were “accurate”.
“We have not
undertaken a
review of the
history and
neighbours
claims so are unable
to comment
Bruce
Rendall
on the accuracy of this and the
circumstances,” he said.
Staff were now “focused on
moving forward positively and
rectifying the issues’’.
Doherty said concrete, polystyrene,
general waste, building
tools, wood, steel and chemicals
have been dumped on the section
since the original house was
demolished, creating an eyesore
and environmental threat to the
nearby Glenstrae Stream.
“We live in such a beautiful
area, I just can’t believe this has
kept happening for so long.”
Rendall said investigations
since September had to led to
multiple people being suspected
HAZARD: This photo from
September shows the types
of building materials and
chemicals which have been
left at the site. These items
have now been removed.
of illegal dumping.
He said the rubbish clean up
will cost $6300 in total with an
additional $2200 for further
vegetation work on the site.
“If anything in particular is removed
and disposed of that can
be attributed to an individual,
then that cost will be passed on.”
He said the city council is
avoiding prosecutions over the
dumping because of the high
evidence threshold needed.
“The council is confident
removal of the material can
be undertaken at less cost to
the ratepayers than the court
process.”
On May 2, city council staff
blocked access to the section
with a concrete bollard to prevent
any further dumping.
Nature challenge reveals web of biodiversity
DR FRANK Ashwood plunged
his hands into a compost pile and
scattered the decaying material
onto a sheet, then waited and saw
movement.
His prey led him on a merry
chase around the small community
garden plot at Canterbury
University campus.
But the soil biologist managed
to corner the invertebrate and
collect his prize – a macro-photo
of Maratus griseus, a white-banded
house jumper posing for the
camera.
Those are the lengths scientists,
citizen scientists and city council
rangers went
to as they catalogued
as much
biodiversity as
possible from all
corners of Greater
Christchurch
during the City
Nature Challenge
from April 26-29.
The challenge
Frank
Ashwood
encouraged people to head out
into nature and capture photos
of plants, animals and fungi then
log them on the iNaturalist app.
Christchurch made the most
observations of any city in
Oceania with more than 20,000
registered during the challenge.
A prizegiving held last week
saw Ashwood take home the
“most inspiring invertebrate”
award.
Christchurch City Nature Challenge
organiser, entomologist Dr
CREEPY CRAWLY: A macro-photo of Maratus griseus, a white-banded house jumper
captured by Dr Frank Ashwood.
Rob Cruickshank said Ashwood
was selected for his impressive
collection of invertebrate records,
including three mite species never
recorded on iNaturalist before,
anywhere in the world.
“Taken together, these observations
will add significantly to our
knowledge of the mite fauna of
our city,” he said.
“Frank also added lots of
other significant
invertebrate observations,
with
some stunning
macrophotography,
including
a possible new
species of
Rob
jumping spider Cruickshank
previously only
recorded from a tree fern in the
UK, and some incredible photos
of a white-banded house jumping
spider.”
Other awards were given out
for the most observations, top
identifier, most observations
made by a new iNaturalist user,
most species documented, perfect
plant find and a biosecurity award
for locating a pest, which was
spotted growing in the Ōtākaro
Christchurch City
Nature Challenge
results
Christchurch placed 26
out of 690 cities, beating
Los Angeles, Melbourne
and Wellington.
• 20,133 observations
• 2307 species
• 421 identifiers
• 349 observers
Almost 4000 different
species have been found
in Christchurch over the
six years the challenge
has been held here.
Avon River Corridor.
“There was a focus on the
former red zone area this year, so
it was great to see the numbers of
people coming out and logging
the biodiversity throughout the
corridor,” city council red zone
manager David Little said.
“The most unwanted find of
the challenge was logged in the
Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor
– yellow flag iris – but it’s better
we know it’s there so we can deal
with it.”
“It was especially great to see
the senior class from South New
Brighton School join the bioblitz
and take a closer look at what’s
living all around them, hidden in
plain sight.”
“The team did a great job organising
events this year and will
be back with more exciting finds
in 2025,” Little said.
We turned to Cameron as we wanted the high profile that we knew would come
amazing team is how geniune he is. Everything happened when it was meant to
and he held us together when we needed it. I also felt listened to and at no time
ever did I feel spoken down to, something I know a lot of agents can do.
remove rubbish from the Avon-
Heathcote Estuary and Lyttelton
Harbour.
More than 50 groups took part
in the Mother of All Clean Ups,
before Mother’s Day.
From 10am to noon, volunteers
from schools, community groups
chatting and picking up litter.
The final weigh in was 2.06
tons. Last year it was 2.37 tons.
Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai
said the decrease showed an
improvement in the amount
of litter around Christchurch
waterways.
Funding boost for
Youth Hub project
STAGE ONE construction of the country’s
first purpose-built youth hub has been
boosted with a $300,000 donation from the
Riccarton Rotary Youth Trust.
Youth Hub Christchurch is under construction
in at 109 Salisbury St, with a focus
on providing services young people need to
improve and maintain their mental health.
Construction of the $21 million stage one
– which includes a supported housing wing
with 23 bedrooms, a wraparound services
block for youth providers to work from and
an outdoor activities courtyard – is expected
to be completed in July.
The Youth Hub Trust will then spend the
rest of the year fitting out the facility before
opening it progressively from late 2024.
Said Riccarton Rotary Youth Trust chair
Murray Compton: “We’re delighted to be
able to support the Youth Hub with this
$300,000 donation. We have never previously
given a single grant of this magnitude,
but we believe the objectives of the Youth
Hub closely align to those of our trust.
“The youth trust has been operating for
more than 30 years and has provided more
than $3 million in support of youth. We
look forward to being part of this exciting
project that will benefit all young people in
our region.”
Youth Hub trust chair Dame Sue Bagshaw
is thrilled with the donation.
“This project would simply not be possible
without donors like the Riccarton Rotary
Youth Trust believing in what we’re trying to
build for our city’s young people,” she said.
“Youth Hub Christchurch will help all
Christchurch youth, especially those who
have had a rough start in life, break the
intergenerational cycle of adversity and give
them the skills, support and confidence they
need to meet their potential.”
More than 8000 young people between
10 and 24 are expected to walk through the
hub’s doors annually. The Rotary donation
will go towards furniture and equipment
purchases for the project and the large meeting
room in the youth services block will be
named in recognition of their generosity.
The Youth Hub Trust continues to fundraise
to fitout the facility, as well as for stage
two which includes an apartment block with
five apartments each with two-three bedrooms,
and communal spaces for training,
education, creativity, music, performance
it comes to choosing the perfect heat
pump or air conditioning system for
their home or office since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people,
qualified electricians, heating and
refrigeration engineers, help to supply
and install one of Christchurch’s
widest range of heat pumps including
Panasonic, Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin
and Fujitsu. Because they have no
affiliation with any one brand, you can
be assured their advice on the benefits
and differences between each product is
unbiased.
They will recommend the most
energy-efficient and cost-effective system
for your individual situation, and will
have you regulating the heat in your
home or office in no time.
Nowadays, customers are often
wanting whole home solutions to be
able to maintain even temperatures
throughout the home both in Winter
and Summer. This can be achieved by
using ducted systems or multi systems
and Enviro Master are experts in
designing, installing and commissioning
these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy offering 80 per cent
of the cost of a new heat pump up to
$3000 including GST.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer
Kiwi Homes initiative and is available
to Home owner/occupiers with a
Community Services Card, a SuperGold
combo card or who live in a low-income
area as determined by deciles 8-10 on
the New Zealand Deprivation Index.
The applicant’s home must also have
been built before 2008, have insulation
up to code (insulation subsidies also
available) and have no fixed heating
in any living area, such as an existing
operational heat pump or fireplace.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Master’s experts will visit to assess your
individual situation, offer advice and
answer any questions you may have.
This consultation is at no cost to the
customer and is always provided before a
heat pump is installed.
Anyone wondering about their
eligibility for a subsidised heat pump are
welcome to get in touch for details and
New bus route unlikely due
to uncertainty over funding
• By Dylan Smits
A LONG requested bus for
Governors Bay is looking
doubtful as Environment
Canterbury reels in ambitions
for route extensions.
For many years, residents
have been wanting public
transport access to the bay
through Dyers Pass Rd and
some hoped
a new bus
route would
be included in
ECan’s Long
Term Plan.
Christchurch
South
councillor
Vicky Southworth
believes
Vicky
Southworth
the Government is unlikely to
allocate enough public transport
funding for a Governors
Bay extension to go ahead.
“This time it’s probably
unlikely. Not least because
we haven’t got confirmation
from the Government as to
what funding they’ll put in,”
Southworth said.
Fifteen per cent of Canterbury’s
public transport is
funded by fares, with remaining
costs split evenly between
ECan and the NZ Transport
Agency.
ACCESS: Governors Bay residents have been lobbying
for a bus route extension for many years.
Governors Bay need a
bus route? Send your
ECan will finalise its long
term plan in late June and
NZTA will not disclose funding
availability for network
extensions until September.
Governors Bay Community
Association chair John Bannock
was unsurprised by the
route’s likely absence from the
Long Term Plan.
“From Governors Bay’s perspective,
they’d be struggling
to be less ambitious than they
already have been.”
The community association
and other residents have submitted
in favour of a bus route
since before the earthquakes.
Bannock questioned whether
the potential lack of NZTA
funding was a legitimate
excuse.
“It’s a convenient story to
tell at the moment, in spite of a
lack of action in the past.”
Southworth expressed support
for a Governors Bay route,
but said the regional council
will likely prioritise other network
extensions.
“I’m the deputy chair of the
transport and urban development
committee. I feel I have to
take a pragmatic view.”
The other Christchurch
South councillor, Paul Dietsche
said more investigation was
needed on the proposed route
and did not wish to comment
further.
Ngāi Tahu councillor Nuk
Korako, who is affiliated with
Rāpaki Marae, did not respond
to request for comment.
An ECan spokesperson said
there are no figures available
for the potential cost of a
Governors Bay route extension.
During public feedback on
the ECan draft Long Term
Plan, Governors Bay Jetty Trust
chair Prue Miller submitted in
favour of extending the route.
Miller understands a lack of
funding may present a barrier
for ECan this year, but hopes
it will be included in the next
plan review.
“It is very disappointing
because we’ve been living in
hope for many years.”
Stylish Yaris Cross SUV shades its sibling
TOYOTA’S decision to create
an SUV version of the Yaris, its
smallest car, has been a master
stroke, although naming it the
‘Cross’ less so, but even that hasn’t
stopped it becoming one of the
company’s best selling small
vehicles.
It shares the same well-proven
and engineered chassis, suspension
and powertrain from the
fourth generation Yaris.
The end result is a highly
competent, functional, and stylish
vehicle packed with a full suite of
safety and driver assist technologies.
Practicality, more room and
style make even its higher price a
more desirable vehicle for many
compared to the diminutive fivedoor
Yaris.
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
There is a sizeable difference
between the Yaris hatch and it’s in
favour of the Cross sibling.
Overall, it’s 240mm longer, has
50mm more front overhang and
a whopping 180mm at the rear.
It has an additional extra 30mm
worth of ground clearance and
stands 90mm taller, enabling the
Yaris Cross to stand tall in the
mini urban SUV class.
First step on the Yaris Cross ladder
is the $38,990 GX. From there
it’s a sizeable monetary leap to
the $45,190 GR Sport, and a more
modest $1000 jump into the flagship
Limited. You can personalise
for a further $1000 with a nifty
two-tone paint job.
your carbon footprint by driving
something cleaner and greener,
the distinctive Yaris Cross makes
a compelling case with super low
CO 2 engine emissions of just 76g/
km. The 1.5-litre three-cylinder
petrol electric hybrid system has a
combined power output of 85kW.
In urban motoring, the hybrid
has amazingly low engine noise
levels. The cabin becomes a cone
of silence when the hybrid system
is running in electric-only mode,
something it regularly does for
long periods on flat urban roads.
City driving is very much the
happy place for this fashionable
little SUV, an environment it was
designed for.
Taking the Cross beyond urban
limits nudges it, and the driver,
ever-so-slightly out of their respective
comfort zones.
Longer open road trips are
doable and the test vehicle was
comfortable enough on a 200-kilometre
roadie. A direct shift CVT
(continuously variable transmission)
is purpose-built to deliver
on its claimed 3.5L/100km fuel
economy.
The cabin has a sophisticated
and comfortable feel and its
390-litre luggage capacity is good,
but not class leading.
While larger than the Yaris
hatch, the cabin still feels snug and
taller back seat passengers will
lament the lack of rear legroom as
they rest their chin on their knees.
This is tolerable for short
around town trips, which to be fair
is what the vehicle is built for, but
it’s not a fun place for the longerlegged
on long journeys.
This is another Toyota model
that benefits from the company’s
acclaimed Safety Sense systems
and advanced driver assistance
functions. They help those behind
the wheel avoid a wide range of
common crash risks using driver
information, early warnings, and,
if needed, automatic braking and
steering intervention.
The ride and handling exemplify
this, proving neat and tidy, hardly
putting a foot out of place. The
suspension is balanced and nimble
and answered the big questions
asked of it over twisty terrain.
The extra height and ground
clearance means more body roll
if you quicken the pace through
tight corners, and is an area where
the lower slung Yaris hatch has a
distinct edge.
The steering could do with more
road feel, although the weighting
is right on point making the test
vehicle easy to park in even the
most confined parking spaces.
