World stage beckons for
St Andrew’s bagpiper

A TALENTED teenage
bagpiper has been selected
to take part in two of the
most prestigious bagpiping
competitions in the world.
Maggie McConnochie, 14,
recently won the New Zealand
Under 21 Piobrairechd and the
Comunn na Piobairechd silver
medal – and has since been
invited to compete in seven
competitions in Scotland in
August. It includes two of the
most respected solo bagpiping
events in the world, the
Argyllshire Gathering and the
Northern Meeting.
The St Andrew’s College student
was the youngest person
in the New Zealand awards
categories.
“It feels pretty good, but it
feels unreal. It’s really exciting,”
she said of the result.
Maggie is likely to be the
youngest taking part in Scotland,
according to mum Delwyn,
but says she tries not to let
nerves get the better of her.
“I do get a bit nervous, sometimes,”
she said.
“But I don’t get too nervous –
I feel like I’m prepared
and try not to think about it
too much.”
Maggie spends between five
and seven hours practising the
bagpipes every week, alongside
school, homework and sports.
She also plays at rest homes and
took part in the Rolleston Anzac
parade in 2023, and led the
dawn service parade in Twizel
this year.
Maggie first picked up
the bagpipes when she was
9-years-old. Under the tutelage
of Richard Hawke (NZOM),
she has gone from strength to
strength.
“Maggie wouldn’t be the
piper she is without the support
of her tutors. She’s really grateful
for Richard’s expertise and
guidance,” Delwyn said.
Maggie hopes her success
will inspire other girls to
get into bagpiping.
Females are significantly
underrepresented in the solo
piping world, making up about
just six per cent.

$465,000 at Thursday’s auction,

Leaf-grinding ‘goat’ is on the job
THERE’S A new “goat” in
town and its rolling around
Christchurch streets helping
munch through the blanket of
autumn leaves.
City council contractors are
busy with leaf fall season under
way now till July.
But this year they’ve got a
new tool in their kit – a few new
trucks, including one nicknamed
the “goat”.
“We’re always looking for
ways to work more efficiently
throughout leaf fall season. One
of the trucks on our roads can
now grind the leaves into small
pieces, which is why they’ve
called it the goat,” city streets
maintenance manager Steve Guy
said.
“It also reduces the number of
times they have to empty a load
so they can do more streets at a
time.”
There’s also another new truck
rolling around Christchurch
streets with a remote-controlled
snorkel.
“This new truck means we no
longer need a person on the road
manually moving the snorkel
around. The person who previously
operated the snorkel can
instead use a leaf blower to direct
leaves into an area where the
snorkel can reach like around
cars,” Guy said.
And a final new truck set to
be launched at the end of the
month, dubbed “Noo-Noo” after
the vacuum in the 90s television
show The Teletubbies.
“Noo-Noo is going to be a
great addition for our contactors.
One of these holds about the
same amount of leaves as three
smaller trucks.”
Guy said it’s important for
people to remember that contractors
are not able to sweep all
of the leaves in the city.
“We’ve got five trucks moving
through 980 high leaf fall areas
throughout the city so our teams
focus on areas where the leaves
inhibit stormwater, compromise
safety and inhibit the growth of
underlying plants.”
Guy said residents shouldn’t
worry if a sweeper truck leaves
halfway through a street.
“This doesn’t mean they’re
done with the job, just that the
truck is full and needs to be
emptied,” he said.
“Please be patient. Our
teams work hard to clear leaves
as quickly as possible, but
sometimes heavy rainfall or high
winds can cause more leaves to
fall in a shorter period. We don’t
want to receive reports of abuse
when our teams are simply doing
their jobs.”

Winning investor enticed by rental margin

investors were interested in the
property. It was eventually won
by an investor who was overseas
and planned to continue renting
it out to the existing tenants who
were paying $580 a week.
“If people want to buy a rental
– what can you buy for $400,000
with tenants who want to keep
on renting,” she told OneRoof.
“It’s a good return and even if
the whole lot was damaged again
and also no insurance then you
have the land value cover you for
that location – so I guess nothing
to lose to be honest.”
Ma said the owner had
approached another agent first
about listing the home, but
they had refused to take it on,
thinking there was no way they
could sell “cross lease, as is,
plaster”.
Location was also the selling
point for a three-bedroom,
two-bathroom deceased estate
in Ilam, which sold at auction
within two weeks of being listed.
The brought-forward auction
opened and was announced on
the market at $980,000. It sold
for $1.071 million after hearty
competition. There were five
buyers in the room and three
who actively bid
for it.

and on” with eventually an older
couple and young family both
fighting for it, she said.
An older couple eventually
won the auction. They had plans
to relocate from Akaroa.
Proctor told OneRoof it was
surprising because people in that
demographic were not usually
looking for a do-up.
“I think they are just looking to
repaint and replace the bathrooms
and kitchen, but it’s still
quite a significant update.”
Proctor said the family member
who she had been liaising
with over the sale had been in
tears on the phone when she
learned of the outcome. She said
she’d had quite a few auctions
like it recently.
Proctor said when there were
two to three people who wanted
to fight for a property then they
determined what the value was,
not the agent. That was when
the power of auction really came
into play.

Tough game ahead for Boys’ High

CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High
School are making no excuses
about their 30-19 loss to Nelson
College.
Head coach Rhys Archibald
said they’d made “stupid mistakes”
on Saturday which cost
them massively.
“We made three stupid
mistakes and they scored
three 60-metre tries, and we
were down 19-0 after about 18
minutes.
“So, bad defensive effort
really.”
The Miles Toyota Premiership
opener was a rematch of last
year’s final, which was won by
Boys’ High.
Archibald will have to rally his
troops ahead of this weekend’s
game against St Andrew’s College
at home.
“We’ve got a bit of work to do
on our defence, especially our
one-on-one tackling and the
decision-making around the
field.
“It’s obviously going to be a
tough game out.”
With Boys’ High celebrating
their club day and the first
XV playing in the afternoon,
Archibald is hopeful of a bumper
crowd to spur the team on.
“It should be a good day, hopefully
the weather plays its part.
