Process for the synthesis of agomelatine starting from (7-methoxy-l-naphthyl) acetonitrile compound of formula (I) synthesized by
reacting (7-methoxy-3,4-dihydro-l-naphthalenyl)acetonitrile of formula (III): with a hydrogenation catalyst, in the presence of an allyl
compound, to yield the compound of formula (I) after filtration and removal of the solvent by evaporation, from which compound of
formula (I) is isolated in the form of a solid after recrystallisation; wherein the said process for the synthesis of agomelatine, comprises
subjecting the compound of formula I to reduction and then to coupling with acetic anhydride.
