Lantern Slide Collection: Lantern slides compiled by the Bethlem Chaplin
Reverend Edward Geoffrey O’Donoghue between 1900 and 1938 to accompany
his lectures on the history of the hospital. Includes excellent photographs of
Bethlem Royal Hospital during the First World War, including shots of soldiers
taking part in sporting contests in the grounds on ‘Wounded Soldiers’ Day’
of 1916, tanks and soldiers marching past the hospital as part of the Victory
Parade of July 1919, photographs of hospital staff during the war, photographs
of bomb craters in the hospital grounds and cartoons and sketches by patients.
Photographs and postcards of hospital buildings, staff and patients during
the war years. For instance the Maudsley was requisitioned by the Army as
the Maudsley Neurological Clearing Hospital. Patient records include those
admitted to the hospital during the war; in some cases the doctors considered
grief for a loved one who had died in the armed forces or the zeppelin and
then Gotha raids to be triggers for mental disorder. Records of hospital
administration: meetings, finance, correspondence, registers, staff, reports and
visitors’ books and hospital magazines.
Important Film Wounded Soldiers’ Day (1916): Three hundred wounded soldiers convalescing in
London hospitals spend an afternoon in the grounds of Bethlem Royal Hospital
on 28 July 1916. The accompanying titles were written by Rev E.G. O’Donoghue,
Bethlem chaplain. The film was produced by Essenay Company. Many of the staff
in the film have been identified (see catalogue listing www.bethlemheritage.

demands of the armed forces for physicians during the First World War whilst
continuing to provide medical treatment to civilians.

Although there is no searchable online catalogue the website does state that the
British Red Cross holds the few surviving records of the Joint War Committee
(1914-1919) as well as the records of their organisation.
Photographs covering all aspects of the Red Cross organisation during the
First World War, from the training of volunteers to nurses working in auxiliary
hospitals set up in private homes.

Papers covering the early years of the Ex-Services’ Welfare Society, which
was founded in 1919 to help soldiers suffering from shell shock to reintegrate
into society or rehabilitate in a safe environment. The Society reveal a tense
relationship with the Ministry of Pensions, which decided to place ex-servicemen
in lunatic asylums, contrary to the wishes of the servicemen themselves. The
Society not only provided a place for ex-servicemen to rest, it also helped them
to enrol on work placements and training schemes.
The administrative details of the hospitals, and their status or type, the location
and covering dates of administrative and clinical records, the existence of lists,
catalogues or other finding aids and links to some online hospital catalogues on
Access to Archives (A2A).
All Pre-eminent Film Gaumont Graphic newsreels collection from 1910 - 1932. BFI holds original
nitrate film material while ITN Source holds the copyright and the right to make
further viewing copies. Nearly 4,000 Gaumont Graphic newsreels from the 1910s
are available and a third of them have a preview clip available online. Images
of War archive comprises more than 200 hours of premium war footage from
France, Britain, USA and Germany including a small number of films from the
First World War.
