pioneer who retired in

Regular Film Alfred West (1857-1937) The arms race between Great Britain and Germany and in particular Germany’s
decision to rival the British naval fleet was one of the causes of the First
World War. The few remaining clips of Alfred West’s films show how the Navy
developed in the twenty years before the outbreak of war.

by Debenham’s & Co. to fundraise for the dependents of the war’s casualties
and disabled soldiers. 5th Battalion York and Lancaster AKA Barnsley Battalion
(1915) 6 mins 50 secs: Inspection of the 5th Battalion York and Lancaster
Regiment by General Lawson. Also includes footage of the soldiers marching
across Lendal Bridge in York on their way to the train station and to France.
Scenes at the Ripon Highland Sports (1916) 12 mins 8 secs: Easter sports day for
the people of Ripon and the regiments stationed at the Army Camp there.
Popular culture Regular Film Winky Causes a Small-Pox Panic (1914) 2 mins 6 secs: A silent, black and white
film made by Bamford Company, part of a long-running series of comedic shorts
in the music hall tradition. During the war, the British public continued to see
films such as this, alongside, new, more serious news features. Finding His
Counterpart (1914) 7 mins 52 secs: Another comedy by Bamford Company, this
time a man searches for his ideal partner by feeling their skulls. In the course
of his search he measures the heads of people campaigning for Bombs for Men
and Votes for Women. Other films made by the same company include Itching
Powder (1914) and Mystic Glove (1914).
