Medals and Prizes.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Gaskell Gold Medal and Prize.<br />

(Value not less 1/urn .@3o.)<br />

This Medal and Prize was established, at the A nnual Meeting held on A ugust 9,<br />

x886, in honour <strong>of</strong> Samuel Gaskell, Esq., F.R.C.S., at one time Medical Super<br />

intendent <strong>of</strong> the County Asylum, Lancaster, and afterwards for 17 years a<br />

Commissioner in Lunacy. Upon his death on March i6, i886, his sister, Mrs.<br />

Holland, gave £1000 to the Association, and other members <strong>of</strong> the family contributed<br />

further sums amounting to £340. <strong>The</strong> interest <strong>of</strong> this sum is given annually as a<br />

prize to the candidate who most distinguishes himself in an Examination in the<br />

subjects hereunder mentioned.<br />

<strong>The</strong> examination must be held in England according to the terms <strong>of</strong> the Trust.<br />

(i) Candidates must produce evidence: (a) Of having attained the age <strong>of</strong> 23. (b) Of having<br />

been qualified Medical Officers in one or more mental hospitals or clinics in psychiatry in the<br />

United Kingdom or elsewhere in the <strong>British</strong> Empire for at least two years. (c) Of possessing the<br />

Certificate in Psychological Medicine <strong>of</strong> this Association or a degree or diploma in Psychological<br />

Medicine <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the Universities or Examining Boards having the power to grant medical<br />

qualifications registrable in the <strong>British</strong> Isles or elsewhere in the <strong>British</strong> Empire.<br />

(2) Candidates will be examined in: (a) Psychology. (b) Anatomy, Histology and Physiology<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Nervous System, reproductive and endocrine glands; Pathology <strong>of</strong> the above, especially<br />

in relation to mental disorders. (c) <strong>The</strong> diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and legal relations <strong>of</strong><br />

mental disorders. (d) Clinical cases.<br />

An entry fee <strong>of</strong> £3 3S. is charged, returnable to bona-fide candidates.
