From the Vice-Chancellor’s Desk
In our tryst with destiny through continuous
pursuit for excellence, Assam University is now
recognized by the Academic Community all around
to have attained the visible phase of maturity. In our
history of last 17 years, we have traversed quite a
long way engraved with hillocks and meadows. But
the visible academic ambience in the University
clearly sign -posts the unchallengeable fact that our
relentless journey towards academic consolidation
has gained momentum. We indeed take pride in
reaffirming our motto, 'excelsior' i.e towards
excellence. The preceding years have been eventful as we have successfully followed our policy of
participatory management. As a result of this, the University premises have attained a countenance
of a self-contained township. Except the Deptt.of Philosophy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, all
other 32 Post Graduate and Integrated Departments have been accommodated in their respective
permanent buildings and all the buildings have been named after illustrious sons and daughters of
Mother India as also eminent personalities of great human family of academic excellence. India
Today-Nielson survey 2010 ranked Assam University 48th among 519 Universities, while an AIU
survey ranked it 7th in research in Sciences among the Central Universities in the country. We
have successfully implemented choice based credit system (CBCS) in PG and integrated courses
and also semester system in the UG programmes in affiliated colleges.
We believe in the maxim that our essence is what we have been since this belief inspires us to go
further and further. Hence, we remind ourselves that we could accredit ourselves by NAAC with
B Grade with CGPA of 2.85 in the 4 point scale which is equivalent to B++ as per previous
system.
We developed a well orchestrated Office of the Director, Internal Quality Assurance Cell which
added sharp dynamism in all academic activities. On the basis of our newly acquired strength, we
have upgraded it as the Directorate of the Internal Quality Assurance which now has a Director, a
Deputy Director and two Assistant Directors from amongst the faculty members to ensure rapid
and systematic growth of academic attainment in the University. Very recently we have completed
our preparation for Academic and Administrative Audit to be conducted by 5 external experts.
Through the internal Academic Audit prior to the visit of the experts, we have been able to
understand our strength more clearly and locate the grey areas for steady improvement in near
future.
The Construction works for a few hostels for the boys and girls, academic buildings for various
Departments in the School of Technology and a few other projects are in various stages of
completion. Here we sincerely recognize the generous help and co-operation of the Ministry of
Human Resource Development and the University Grants Commission from time to time. That is
how we could implement the reservation system of the Govt.of India for different marginalized
Sections of the society in letter and spirit as per the scheme of capacity expansion. We hope that

we would be able to construct several other quarters for the teaching and non-teaching staff as
well as the International Guest House during the remaining period of the XIth Plan. This massive
expansion project could be successful only because of the cumulative efforts of our able officers,
non-teaching employees and engineers. I take this opportunity to record my appreciation for all of
them because only due to their contribution, the processes of regeneration and empowerment
have been able to alleviate us to the level of multi-dimensional maturity in no time.
I am delighted to inform here that we could equip all our Departments with smart class room
facility and internet connectivity through which our teaching and learning process is expected to
soar up to higher altitude. Some other modern facilities are also under way. We are proud to share
with you the information that along with the Department of Life Sciences, Bengali, Fine Arts and
Ecology, the Department of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Bio-Technology have also been
recognized by the UGC as Department with potential for excellence qualifying for financial support
under Special Assistance Programme. In the forthcoming academic session, we plan to strengthen
3 UGC recognized Advance Centres of Study on the one hand and on the other make all the
contemplated 50 Centres of Study operational to usher in a decidedly new phase of creative learning
in the University.
Very soon, we would complete the formalities to sign memoranda of understanding with various
Universities of Bangladesh, Canada, China and few other SAARC countries. In order to translate
the Internationalization policy of the Govt.of India into reality, we have created a separate Cell
under the leadership of a Director, National and International Academic Collaborative Cell through
which we have already been able to formulate academic collaboration with the Universities of
Mauritius and United Kingdom. Undoubtedly, the sky is our limit. We are leaving no stone unturned
to reap the harvest from the benefits made available by the National Knowledge Commission.
The preliminary steps have already been taken to convert Assam University Campus into a digital
Campus complete with the facilities of e-governance.
Our Diphu Campus, which came into existence in July 2007, is having 8 Post Graduate
Departments and one advance Centre for Tribal Studies. We have initiated the process of
constructing Academic and Administrative Buildings. Faculty members of Diphu campus have
been participating in National and International Seminars as well as publishing scholarly articles
and books quite appreciably. We expect that our campus at Diphu will be able to register its presence
among the academic community within no time.
I sincerely hope that with the aforesaid phenomenal extension and augmentation of academic
activities which include outreach programmes and rapidly increasing facilities for our students,
researchers and teachers, Assam University would be able to nourish and produce the worthy
citizens of our country as well as the flag bearers for the greater human world of knowledge. I
reiterate once again that, yes, we have promises to keep and miles to go before we look back.
( Prof.Tapodhir Bhattacharjee )

Assam University, Silchar (a Central
University) was established by an Act of
Parliament promulgated in 1989 and enforced
by a Notification of the Government of India
in January 1994. In 2008 the University has
been accredited by NAAC with Grade B with
a CGPA of 2.85.
With the Bhuban and the Barail ranges
of hills at the backdrop, the University
Campus is surrounded by lush green
hillocks, natural lakes and the picturesque
tea gardens of South Assam. The inner
landscape is featured by sprawling lawns,
well nurtured gardens and eco-forests. The
serene setting makes Assam University
Campus a unique one with exquisite natural
beauty which captures viewers’ imagination
and provides an ideal atmosphere for study
and research.
Distance between the main Campus and
the Silchar city is about 23 km. Silchar city
being the gateway to the entire southern part
of North East India is the hub of commercial
activities and is known for its history as the
Tea Capital of South Assam.
Away from the humdrum of the busy
city-life of Silchar and set amidst its sylvan
surroundings, the University engages itself
in academic pursuits. The objectives of the
University, as enshrined in Section 4 of
Assam University Act, are –
‘‘to disseminate and advance knowledge
by providing instructional and research
facilities in such branches of learning as it
may deem fit and by the example of its
corporate life to make provisions for
integrated courses in Humanities, Natural
ACADEMIC DEPARTMENTS
RABINDRANATH TAGORE SCHOOL OF LANGUAGES & CULTURAL STUDIES
Department of Linguistics
The Department of Linguistics came into being in 1995 with
the aim of developing a better understanding of language study and
linguistics. With the diverse linguistic scenario in North East India
providing its backdrop, the thrust of the department’s endeavour
has been on analyzing the languages of North East India with special
reference to the languages of South Assam. The department is also
giving importance to the study of endangered languages of the North
East India as a lot of minority languages are spoken in this part of
the country which is considered to be endangered so that we can
do something meaningful to preserve these. All the North Eastern
languages show dialectal variations which need to be studied
structurally as well as sociolinguistically. Such studies would help
the standardization of languages and pave ways for their use in education and other fields of socio-culture life of North
East India. Keeping this in view, the department has developed its course curriculum in such a way so as to enable
students at the Post Graduate level to acquire capabilities to take up independent researches in future on various
languages and their recent developments.
Department of Bengali
The Department of Bengali is one of the first six departments of the
University. The department started its journey in the month of July 1994.
Starting with only two-faculty members in 1994, the department has at present
18 faculty members with different specializations. Since its inception, the
Department has been trying to integrate teaching, research and cultural
activities mainly centering around Bengali language, literature and culture.
The department extended its activities to the area of research with a focus on
Modern Literary theory, Social Science and the Folk traditions of this valley.
The North East is full of different types of ethnic people and a splendid variety
of ethnic culture. One of the objectives of the Department is to explore this
ethnic culture. Since inception, it is the largest department of the university in respect of number of students.
MAJOR FOCUS OF THE DEPARTMENT
The major focus of the department is to promote creativity of the students as well as teachers. Research activities
like M.Phil. and Ph. D. work constitute an important programme of the department. The thrust areas of the M. Phil. and
Centre for Biodiversity and Natural Resources Conservation
Aim and Objectives of the Centre
Biological diversity is fundamental to the fulfilment of human needs. An environment which is rich in biological
diversity, offers the broadest array of options for sustaining human welfare and for adapting to change. The Barak
Valley falling in Assam in the Northeast India belongs to the Indo-Burma Hotspots, and one of the most biological
diverse regions of the world. Barak Valley constitutes 8.9% geographical area of the state covering an area of 6922 sq
km. The land use/land cover area of the Valley may be characterized by evergreen forest, semi evergreen forest, mixed
moist deciduous forest, scrub forest, degraded forest, agricultural land and tea gardens. Barak Valley has 14 Reserve
Forests (RFs) and one Wildlife Sanctuary (WLS). The Valley is richly endowed with plant and animal resources, which
needs to be managed on a sustainable basis to serve as the main driver of development in the area. The sustainable
development of any area depends on the proper utilization of its natural resources.
Keeping these in view, the Assam University, Silchar being the highest academic institute in the region,
