OVERVIEW OVERVIEW
<strong>The</strong> strong man of Europe
With its strong fundamentals
and robust industry, Germany
posted growth in times of recession
plaguing the eurozone.
<strong>The</strong> story of German economic
miracle continues
In the good old days, Germany was called Das
Land der Dichter und Denker (the land of poets and
thinkers). And to it one can add inventors, innovators,
entrepreneurs and a nation of hard working
people that have led to its economic might in the
21st century.
Located in central and western Europe, Germany
is bound by breathtaking mountains of the
Alps on the south and beautiful seas to its north.
It is bordered by Austria and Switzerland in the
south, Denmark in the north, Poland and the Czech
Republic in the east, France and Luxembourg in the
south-west, and Belgium and the Netherlands in
the north-west.
A country of bustling cities and sleepy villages,
historic townships and medieval castles, gleaming
auto museums and engineering marvels, diverse
culture and multiethnic people, Germany is a land
of many colours and contrasts. With an estimated
population of 81.5mn (July 2011), Germany is the
most populous country in the European Union,
and ranks as the 16th most populous country in
the world. Of the total population, German nationals
constitute 91%. Other ethnic groups include
Turkish (2.4%) and rest is made up largely of Greek,
Italian, Polish, Russian, Serbo-Croatian and Spanish
peoples. <strong>The</strong>re is a Danish minority in the north and
a Sorbian (Slavic) minority in the east.
<strong>The</strong> Federal Republic of Germany comprises 16
states. Berlin, in the northeastern part of the country,
is the capital city and is also one of the 16 states.
Economy
When recession gripped the eurozone in the
recent past, Germany remained largely unaffected
and in fact surged ahead owing to strong investment
and consumer spending, thus emerging as
the strong man of Europe. <strong>The</strong> economy posted
a growth of 1.5% in the first three months of the
current year, surpassing all the analyists’ expectations.
In the second quarter of 2010, riding heavily
on construction recovery and exports, it registered
a growth of 2.2%, helping the eurozone outstrip
growth in the US.
According to the German statistics office, quoted
in Guardian newspaper: Investment, construction
and consumer spending were the main areas of
growth in Germany, while trade contributed to
growth at slightly slower rate. Germany could expand
by 3% or more this year, says Wolfgang Franz,
a top economic adviser to the government, in the
article.
“Germany had a roaring start into the second
year of its golden decade,” said Holger Schmieding,
chief economist at Berenberg, Germany’s
oldest private bank. “For two reasons, the German
strength is good news for Europe. First, German
strength is gradually spreading to other countries
in the region. Secondly, Germany is showing that
painful austerity and reforms ultimately pay off
handsomely.”
<strong>The</strong> Fernsehturm (German
for “television tower”)
dominates the skyline
of Berlin. Close to Alexanderplatz
and part of
the World Federation of
Great Towers (WFGT), the
tower was constructed
between 1965 and 1969
by the former German
Democratic Republic administration
who intended
it as a symbol of Berlin,
which it remains today. It
is easily visible throughout
the central and some
suburban districts of Berlin.
Office Qatar (AHK)
Germany is the largest economy in Europe, the
fourth largest in the world by nominal gross domestic
product (GDP) and the fifth largest by purchasing
power parity (PPP). It’s a leading exporter of
machinery, vehicles, chemicals, household equipment
and is second only to China in exports.
West Germany’s economic recovery after World
War II is a stuff of legend in how much a nation
can achieve with grit and determination. Currency
reform, elimination of price controls, longer working
hours, reduction of tax rate … were all part of
‘Wirtschaftswunder’ (economic miracle in German)
that catapulted the country into the league of
developed nations.
Post-reunification, the reforms initiated by
Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, known as Agenda
2010, helped in bringing down the unemployment
rate and stimulate growth. <strong>The</strong> extensive use of
government-sponsored Kurzarbeit (short-time)
work programmes was a success. <strong>The</strong> reforms also
included cuts in taxation and social benefits.
<strong>The</strong> German industry benefits from a highly
skilled labour force. At 40.6 hours on average in a
week, Germans spend more hours at work than the
eurozone average.
Germany has the lowest unemployment rate in
the region of 6%, according to Eurostat, comparatively
Spain is over 20% while Greece is 15%.
According to the Bureau of European and Eurasian
Affairs of the US state government: “In 2010,
gross domestic product grew by 3.6%, and the
German economy experienced its strongest rate of
growth since reunification. <strong>The</strong> country’s exportdependent
economy is growing more quickly than
the eurozone average. It is expected to grow by
2.6% in 2011, with exports to emerging markets
playing an increasingly important role. Domestic
demand is becoming a more prominent driver of
growth. <strong>The</strong> German labour market also showed a
strong performance in 2010. Economists attribute
the decrease in unemployment to the extensive
use of government-sponsored Kurzarbeit work
programmes, as well as to structural reforms implemented
under the government of former chancellor
Gerhard Schroeder.
Industry
Germans are an industrious lot. <strong>The</strong> industrial
sector in the country has been a main driver for its
growth and serves as the backbone of its economy.
Germany has been at the forefront of inventions
and innovations, and is a market leader in several
sectors.
<strong>The</strong> manufacturing sector forms a sizeable
chunk of the German industry. Others are mechanical,
electrical and precision engineering, chemicals,
environmental technology, optics, medical technology,
biotech and genetic engineering, nanotechnology,
aerospace, logistics. <strong>The</strong> region of Ruhr is a
prominent industrial belt in the country. Others are
located in Bavaria, Dresden, Bremen and Hamburg.
Germany is considered the birth place of the
automobile. This year the country is celebrating
125th anniversary of Carl Benz’s invention of the
motorised tricycle that marked the birth of modern-day
automobile. <strong>The</strong> automobile sector is one
of the largest employers in the country. As many as
6mn vehicles are produced in Germany annually,
and approximately 5.5mn are produced overseas by
German brands. It is one of the top three automobile
manufacturers in the world alongside the
United States and Japan. <strong>The</strong> Volkswagen Group is
one of the three biggest automotive companies of
the world (along with Toyota and General Motors).
In 2010 the 10 largest industrial entities in Germany
were Volkswagen, Allianz, E.ON, Daimler, Siemens,
Metro, Deutsche Telekom, Munich Re, BASF,
and BMW. Other prominent German companies are
Porsche (automobile), Hochtief (construction), Henkel
(household and consumer products), pharmaceutical
majors Bayer and Merck, Adidas and Puma
(sports goods), Commerzbank and Deutsche Bank,
Aldi, Lidl and Edeka (retail), enterprise software
major SAP, Lufthansa (airline), Infineon (semiconductors),
Deutsche Post (logistics), Hugo Boss
(luxury goods) ... As many as 37 Fortune Global 500
companies are headquartered in Germany.
However, according to the country studies
report on Germany in the US Library of Congress:
“<strong>The</strong> glory of German industry is not in the big firms
that are well known around the world. It is in the
small- and medium-sized firms that constitute what
the Germans call the Mittelstand. Although that
term has political and social as well as management
connotations, it has been widely accepted to mean
companies that employ fewer than 500 workers.
Such firms are responsible for a significant share of
exports, and provide one of the firmest foundations
of the middle class.”
Political system
Germany is a federation of 16 states, each with
its own constitution, parliament and government.
<strong>The</strong> states are represented at the federal level Bundestag
through the state level council Bundesrat.
Germany is federal, parliamentary, democratic
republic. <strong>The</strong> constitution, laid out in 1949 through
the document known as the Grundgesetz (Basic
Law), emphasises the protection of individual liberty
and division of powers in a federal structure.
Amendments generally require a two-thirds
majority of both chambers of parliament. However,
the fundamental principles of the constitution as
expressed in the articles guaranteeing human dignity,
the separation of powers, the federal structure,
and the rule of law are valid in perpetuity.
<strong>The</strong> federal president, Christian Wulff (since
2010), is the head of state and invested primarily
with representative responsibilities and powers. <strong>The</strong>
Bilateral relations
Qatar and Germany have excellent bilateral ties.
According to the website of Qatar Embassy in Germany:
“Relations between the two countries considered
in Doha and in Berlin as close and good. Qatar
seeks strong economic ties with Germany as Qatar
gains worldwide importance because of its natural
sources especially liquid natural gas (LNG).
<strong>The</strong> official visit by the Emir His Highness Sheikh
and his short visit by the end of the same year and
the official visit of the late president Johannes Rau
to Qatar in 2001 and the short working talks that
former chancellor Gerhard Schroeder held in Doha
in 2005 set up the ground for new solid partnership
between the two countries. Also the visit of
His Excellency Sheikh Abdulla bin Khalifa al-Thani,
the former prime minister of the State of Qatar to
Germany in June 2006, contributed to this goal.
Building on Mutual
Appreciation
German-Qatari relations are based upon significant
and most of all growing commercial ties and
mutual goals of peace and educational development.
Anne Ruth Herkes, Ambassador of the Federal
Republic of Germany to Qatar, says, “Germany
and Qatar enjoy excellent and steadily growing
relations that cover the political, cultural and
most importantly economic sectors.” According to
Herkes, Germany sees Qatar as a vital player in facing
regional challenges as well as the most active
partner in the region to contribute to the solution
of global issues.
“Qatar is an increasingly important actor on the
international stage, with roles in providing solutions
and reacting to regional challenges such as
the “Arab spring” and the “Middle East Peace Process,”
adds the Ambassador. “Qatar is also gaining
growing influence in multilateral fora such as the
UN, or in the field of important global issues such as
the use of clean and renewable energy.”
A priority market in the GCC
According to the Ambassador, Qatar, as an
economically strong member of the GCC, is a priority
market for Germany. In 1999 both countries
signed an investment protection treaty. In 2007,
Germany and Qatar founded a mixed commission
on economics and just an year later a working
group on bilateral investments. “In each 2009 and
2010, Germany was (with EURO 1.2 billion) Qatar’s
2nd largest trading partner worldwide with a very
promising potential for the future,” says Herkes. “As
the German-Qatari relationship keeps growing, we
will continue to see strongly enhanced participation
in each other´s economies.”
“<strong>The</strong> time span from 2009 until now saw ever
deepening relations between our two countries. It
shows a quantum leap in relations which are based
on mutual trust and appreciation. Especially in
2009 / 2010 when nearly all countries worldwide
struggled with the recession, Germany and Qatar
showed strong and stable performances,” says the
Ambassador.
<strong>The</strong> Ambassador is from Völklingen, Saarland, which is
located near the German-French border and which is home
to one of Germany’s World Heritage Sites—the Völklinger
Hütte. Its ironworks were founded 1873 and were once Germany’s
largest producer of steel girders. She has been with
her husband in Qatar since July 2010.
“I would have to say that living in Qatar, discovering
and learning the fascinating Qatari culture by meeting and
interacting with its people are some of the most enjoyable
aspects of my position,” she says.
When the Ambassador is not on duty, which is rarely the
case, she can be found jogging in her neighbourhood.
“In my personal life, I take great pride in the accomplishments
of my children—they are both on the verge of starting
to study at universities, opening a new chapter of their
young lives,” she adds.
Key figures
“Although total German exports to Qatar
dropped in 2009 by 32%, it started growing again
in 2010 and will soon achieve the numbers of 2008.
<strong>The</strong> reason is the strong interest of Qatar in Germany’s
high quality products and services.”
<strong>The</strong> number of expatriate Germans living and
working in Qatar is estimated at 1,800.
“<strong>The</strong> primary reason for Germans moving to this
bustling and dynamic country is the search for job
opportunities offered by the rapid and visionary
development in Qatar,” says the Ambassador.
“While job opportunities remain the key motive
of Germans moving here, their stay in Qatar gives
them a unique experience to learn of its physical
beauty, its multicultural make-up, its open and tolerant
society, and arouses their curiosity to learn more
about Qatari and Islamic culture and traditions. All
reasons why so many Germans choose to stay.”
Crucial contribution
Strong economical interest and business opportunities
from German companies continue to
grow due to the diverse portfolio of the visionary
development in Qatar, says Herkes. “<strong>The</strong>re are more
than 70 German or German related companies in
Qatar and many more active on a project basis or
companies who directly export their products and
services,” she says.
“Some of the key areas where we have seen
German companies contribute and participate are
infrastructure development, construction, logistics,
traffic and transportation and petrochemical industry
as well as renewable energy.”
According to Herkes, Germany and Qatar share
common cultural objectives, such as tolerance vis à
vis other cultures and acceptance of a diverse setup
of people living together in one country.
“Another area (in addition to trade and commerce)
Germany is eager to explore, is cultural exchange
in order to better understand the rich Qatari
and Islamic traditions as well as to enrich our close
political ties through dialogues between our political
representatives and senior leaders,” she says.
Message
Dr. Peter Göpfrich
<strong>The</strong> Delegate of German Industry and Commerce for the Lower Gulf Region
Qatar is the world’s largest liquefied natural gas exporter; it is the country with the largest economic growth rate, the largest per
capita income worldwide—in short, it is one of the most dynamic markets within the states of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the
whole MENA Region. Qatar is aiming to develop a diversified, knowledge-based and sophisticated industrial and economic base
which will secure the future and welfare of its population for a long time to come.
In order to achieve these goals and to overcome the enormous challenges, Germany is looking forward to be a partner of Qatar and to share
its ambitions and quest for highest quality and sustainability. <strong>The</strong> numerous projects in Qatar, which are executed with the support of large and
medium sized German companies, in addition to the remarkable Qatari investments in German products and services indicate that Germany is
one of the preferred partners of Qatar.
<strong>The</strong> German Industry and Commerce Office (AHK) in Qatar, authorized by the German Ministry of Economy and Technology, is committed to
strengthen the ties between the two countries. At 120 locations in 80 countries around the world, the members of the German Chamber Networks
(AHKs) offer their connections and various services to German and foreign companies.
Germany is currently the world’s number two exporting country after China. German exports to Qatar with a value of 1.5 billion Euros in 2010
are mainly consumer goods, especially automobiles and spare parts, machineries, electro-technics, iron and steel, electronics and hardware.
Qatar exports to Germany, reaching 117.4 million Euros in the same year, were mainly sporadic manufactures of the petrochemical industry, oil
and gas products.
In the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index 2011-2012, Qatar has been ranked number 14 among a total of 142 countries.
This is due to Qatar’s high quality institutional framework, stable macro economically environment and efficient good market. Germany is
ranked 6th this year, particularly because of the quality of its infrastructure, boasting first-rate facilities across all modes of transportation, efficiency
of the goods market, characterized by intense local competition and low market dominance by large companies. Additionally Germany’s
business sector is highly sophisticated and German companies are among the most innovative in the world, spending heavily on R&D. <strong>The</strong>se
conditions are a perfect basis for business relationships with Qatar. I am positive, that in future the bilateral relationship between Germany and
Qatar will increase. Particularly the FIFA World Cup preparations and the Qatar National Vision 2030 set up the roadmap not only for the trade
relations but for more investments, too.
During the visit of H.E. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to Germany in September 2010, he signed declarations of intent to deepen the
German-Qatari economic cooperation, in particular in the renewable energies field (solar thermal energy) together with the German Minister of
Economic Affairs at that time, Rainer Brüderle. Also the President of Germany, H.E. Christian Wulff, visited Qatar in February 2011 to deepen the
good relations between Germany and Qatar.
Germany would be pleased to provide assistance by encouraging R&D programs, facilitating technology transfer, job placement and recruiting.
Besides, the German School in Doha will be permanently developed. In addition, there is still a lot of room for more Qatari investment opportunities
in Germany. Qatar has become a major shareholder in Volkswagen and Porsche, which have become role models and front-runners,
however there is still a lot of other investments opportunities, especially among “hidden champions”, small- and medium-sized German companies,
which are mostly the front-runners and avant-garde of innovation and technological progress. <strong>The</strong> focus of the AHK is to weave in more
small & medium enterprises since the bigger companies have already the necessary to expand their business potential. Bringing SMEs from
Germany to the region is what we actively look at since these are the companies that need our support.
From dreams to realty
When it comes to development German engineers
have earned kudos for their vision and expertise
globally. In Qatar too, they are at the forefront of its
key projects relating to FIFA World Cup 2022
German engineers have a stellar reputation. At home, they were at
task that the partners want to take on together.
According to the Hochtief press statement on its
projects in Qatar, Hochtief Construction is constructing the
Barwa Commercial Avenue, a complex of buildings extend-
State Guest Reception Terminal Abu Dhabi Airport : In December 2010 after only 10 months construction period under the
management of Hochtief, the new State Guest Reception Terminal at the Abu Dhabi International Airport was inaugurated.
Since then important state guests are being welcomed there. <strong>The</strong> world’s largest passenger boarding bridge leads the guests
directly to the reception hall of the terminal that also includes press, conference, and private rooms of His Highness Sheikh
Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates.
Maintaining mobility will become
a major task of modern societies
in the future, as the world’s
population is expected to grow from
over 6 billion to 8 billion by 2025. Of
that growth spurt, 95 per cent will take
place in developing countries; and for
the first time in the history of humanity,
more people live in cities than in rural
areas. This extreme rise in population
contained mainly in cities will mean that
infrastructure will become overloaded.
Bahrain International Airport,
Manama : In April 2010, a joint
venture of Hochtief Facility Management
Bahrain and Bahrain
Airport Company took on services
under a contract worth about
€85mn for the next 6 years. Within
the joint venture Hochtief encompasses
responsibility for the operation
of all technical systems and
the airport infrastructure on both
airside and landside. That means
securing a frictionless process flow,
backing up the transport of 9mn
passengers and serving the primary
hub for Gulf Air and Bahrain Air.
This overload will result in an increase
of fuel consumption and air pollution, as
well as economic inefficiency.
A country facing an overload on its
infrastructure is China. Many people are
stuck in traffic for two to three hours a
day due to poor infrastructure, which
hinders their ability to contribute to the
productivity of the country.
So the question that faces us is: What
are the solutions for the future?
Most experts believe the answers
are in change and advancement of
technology. <strong>The</strong> more intelligent
transportation becomes, the more
people can co-exist in a cohesive
environment. <strong>The</strong> decision to make a
change and invest in more efficient urban
transportation systems will ultimately
lead to a city’s economic viability. An
example of that viability or lack there of
is the American commuter who is stuck
in traffic for over 15 hours per week.
$808 (USD) is the cost per week each
American commuter pays in terms of lost
fuel and work hours.
Qatar is a prime example of a country
making changes towards sustainability.
As an investment in its future, Qatar
has plans to build a completely new
passenger and freight rail system and
a high-speed rail link to neighbouring
Bahrain for the upcoming FIFA World
Cup Games in 2022.
Siemens is an industry leader that
understands the global needs and hard
issues presented. It’s for this reason
that the Siemens Mobility Division
offers comprehensive and sustainable
solutions to meet the challenges of
climate change, growing urbanization,
and population growth. Siemens is
focused on networking various modes
of transportation in order to ensure the
efficient and environmentally friendly
transport of people and goods, while also
INFRASTRUCTURE
developed along the highway on the southern edge of Doha and will offer
retail space, offices and residential units. <strong>The</strong> project is due for completion in
the middle of 2012 and will offer a gross floor area of just under 900,000sq m,
equivalent to 110 soccer pitches.
Since 2008 as part of a joint venture, Hochtief Construction has been
involved in the planning of the world’s longest link between two countries.
<strong>The</strong> 40km- long Qatar-Bahrain Causeway, which will have a total of 25km of
bridges and viaducts, is designed to link the two Gulf states.
Lusail City is one of the world’s largest urban planning projects. Spanning
an area of around 35sq km north of Doha, a completely new metropolis is
emerging. Once it is finished in 2020, the city is set to offer space for 200,000
inhabitants and comprise 10 districts. A joint venture between Qatari Diar
and Hochtief Construction will develop this megacity. Furthermore, Hochtief
Construction is part of the steering committee established for Lusail.
Hochtief is also active in Qatar through its involvement with Al Habtoor
Leighton Group. <strong>The</strong> company was founded in September 2007 as a merger
between Al Habtoor Engineering, a major construction company in the Gulf region,
and the local arm of the Hochtief subsidiary Leighton Holdings (Australia)
which, among other things, built the Al Shaqab Equestrian Academy in Qatar.
In Qatar, the Al Habtoor Leighton Group is building two water supply grids
worth around €144mn (QR750mn). <strong>The</strong> contract encompasses the construction
of two pump stations, around 16km of supply pipelines as well as reservoirs,
buildings and the associated infrastructure. <strong>The</strong> grids will supply the
areas of Duhail and Umm Qam. <strong>The</strong> Al Habtoor Leighton Group will complete
the project by 2012, says the company’s press statement.
Other project the Al Habtoor Leighton has been involved is the Dubai
Towers in Doha. Once finished in 2013, the tower will stretch to 440m. <strong>The</strong> 88storey
building will house retail and office space, a five-star hotel and luxury
apartments.
Not just Hochtief but several other German companies in the construction
and infrastructure sector are also involved in the strategic projects as
part of World Cup 2022. When Qatar was awarded the rights to host the FIFA
event last December, it was a cause of celebration not just in Qatar but also in
Germany.
CEO - Martin à Porta
targeting the goal of sustainability.
Take for example the Siemens
Velaro high-speed train, which
runs on the equivalent of 0.33 litres
of gasoline per person per 100
kilometres at 100 per cent passenger
load. This volume is almost equal to
one can of Coca Cola.
As a pioneer and general
supplier of electric mobility
solutions, Siemens believes that
these new types of innovations
will help us co-exist in a populous
society and in turn reduce
emissions, saving energy, revalue
public spaces, and make our cities a
better place to live.
(AS&P) combines innovative approaches in architecture,
urban and transport planning with over 40
years of international planning and building experience.
<strong>The</strong> projects range from structural design,
urban planning and urban and regional development
to recreation and tourism planning, conceptual
transport planning and project management
as well as planning specific preparation of major
events and expert opinions for policy advising.
AS&P designed eight of the 12 stadiums Qatar
plans to use for the event, as well as the 743-page,
5kg bid book the country presented to football’s
governing body FIFA.
“We were speechless and had a spontaneous
party. It was just before Christmas and the best
present any of us ever could have hoped for,” AS&P
partner Axel Bienhaus told Reuters.
“Qatar’s victory is in many ways a victory for
Germany too,” Bienhaus added.
Qatar has allocated a whopping 40% of its
budget between now and 2016 to infrastructure
projects, including $11bn on a new international
airport, $5.5bn on a deepwater seaport and $1bn
for a transport corridor in Doha. It will spend $20bn
on roads.
According to Bank of America Merrill Lynch
estimates, Qatar will spend about $65bn preparing
for the tournament, including building nine new
24 GERMANY Special Report
stadiums and renovating three at an estimated cost
of about $2bn apiece.
Much of that is expected to be designed and
built by German companies. Deutsche Bahn is already
at work on a €17bn, 320-km train line system
in Doha. <strong>The</strong> project, one of the biggest foreign
deals in German industrial history, will link the
World Cup stadiums and won’t wrap up until 2026,
four years after the Cup.
German conglomerate Siemens and steel group
ThyssenKrupp are frontrunners in the race for
contracts, up against everyone from South Korea’s
Daewoo to Luxembourg-based Arcelor Mittal.
And it’s not just the big names. At an industrial
trade exhibition in Qatar recently, German firms were
the second most numerous after those from the United
Arab Emirates. Many were small- and mid-sized
companies from the country’s famed ‘Mittelstand’
-- firms like Weka, a tiny Stuttgart-based specialist
manufacturer of aluminium door handles and locks.
“<strong>The</strong>re is huge potential in Qatar, obviously,” said
Weka’s sales manager Matthias Imber, standing
behind the counter at the company’s exhibit. “We
met this week with a hotel that will have 600 rooms.
All of these rooms will need to be fitted with door
handles. This is a great amount to start off with, and
hopefully we will move on to bigger projects.”
At a stand touting the hair and hand dryers
made by a company called Starmix, based in the
state of Baden Wuerttemberg, sales manager Katrin
Kotthaus sketched out the opportunity: to meet
FIFA requirements, Qatar will need to increase hotel
room capacity to 95,000 from 10,000 by 2022. <strong>The</strong>
new stadiums, which will host an estimated 500,000
visitors, will also need thousands of dryers.
“Wherever there is a public toilet, you need an
electric hand dryer,” she said, adding that Starmix
had already supplied hair dryers for Qatar’s hotels
including the Grand Hyatt. “Everybody wants to
come into this market. Everyone knows what is
coming up for stadia and projects here. <strong>The</strong>y have
big plans,” she said.
German companies are there to help sell those
plans, too. When the FIFA delegation visited Qatar
last year to assess the strength of the country’s bid,
it was Berlin-based event planning firm Atkon that
created the 39-minute interactive show to wow the
visiting inspectors. Slogan: “Expect Amazing”.
Little wonder that trade between the two
countries has boomed. Up until a little more than a
decade ago, Germany lagged in terms of exports to
Qatar. Since then it has passed Britain, France and
other rivals.
Two weeks after the FIFA vote in December, German
magazine Der Spiegel predicted Germany AG
could see an even bigger financial boost from the
Qatar World Cup than it did from its own World Cup
in 2006. (With inputs from Reuters)

Man of Steel
Meet Mr. Wilhelm Lindermair, veteran
civil engineer, specialised in steel construction
and since October 2011 managing
director of TechnoCity Construction
& Engineering in Qatar. TechnoCity is a leading
player in steel erection, wall-and-roof cladding,
engineering, consulting and project management.
A German national and a civil engineer from
the University of Munich, Mr. Lindermair has three
decades of experience in key projects at home and
abroad.
A Bavarian at heart and a typical German when
it comes to managing projects, his vision and
expertise have enabled him to execute complex
tasks.
Together with friend and partner Pavlos Kazantzidis
they are managing the growing business
of TechnoCity with quality steel erection, roofing,
and facades. In terms of sustainability, TechnoCity is
now developing new container systems matching
the needs of the local market. This container system
allows to pile five containers at a transport volume
size of one container. <strong>The</strong> result is a more economic
usage than the common wooden accommodations
and represents a flexible system tailor-made for
clients requiring temporary offices as well as labour
camps. He wants to increase his new knowledge
of developing sustainable systems in an economic
frame. “<strong>The</strong> feedback I got from the people living
in the camp was throughout positive and it’s an
important factor in motivating the labourers,” says
Mr. Lindermair.
In 1990 he firstly got acquainted with the Middle
East and learned about the Arabic culture and
traditions in Saudi Arabia. <strong>The</strong> award of the steel
that common targets and interests have no borders.
<strong>The</strong> installation of the domes and umbrellas at this
holy place was executed by Turkish erectors trained
in the Munich workshop. Mr. Lindermair has been
involved in various huge steel construction sites
all over the world from Malaysia till Greece starting
from power-plants, fully automatic park houses and
stadiums. His passion for stadiums developed when
he was a young boy, playing football to be part of it
if not as a player than as a construction engineer.
On his steel journey all over the world he again
made a stopover in Munich when he was involved
in the Lufthansa Hangar of the New Munich Airport.
It seems he fell in love with the idea of constructing
‘world’s biggest hangars’ as he did recently for Qatar’s
New Doha International Airport (NDIA). If not
in Munich he always worked as a freelancer for German
companies, mainly for German construction
giant HOCHTIEF (Qatar holds stake in the company).
As a steel specialist, again so for HOCHTIEF, he
was part of the New Athens International Airport
construction in Greece.
Mr. Wilhelm
Lindermair, at
In Athens, Lindermair first met
his future partner Pavlos when
they have been both involved
in the same projects such as
the beautiful Athens Olympic
Complex designed by the world
famous Architect Santiago Calatrava.
Lindermair has extensive
experience in the Middle East
beginning with his first project in
Saudi Arabia in the 90s to his current
operations in Qatar. His love
for the Middle East and Qatar in
particular has made this country
a home away from home for
him. In his villa in Markhiya area,
he tries to keep the green of
<strong>The</strong> Diamler Group is celebrating 125
years of the automobile this year. <strong>The</strong>
anniversary is also momentous for the
iconic German car brands that have had a
long association with Qatar
<strong>The</strong> sleek, sophisticated and prestigious
Mercedes Benz cars that we see on Qatar’s
roads have come a long way. To be precise
125 years! It was on January 29, 1886, inventor Carl
Benz registered a patent for his ‘vehicle with gasengine
drive’ (a motorised tricycle) with the Berlin
Patent Office. That marked the birth of the modern
automobile, and paved the way for cars that have
become such an inseparable part of our lives today.
More than a century later, in 2011, the Daimler
Group is celebrating this anniversary with the motto
‘125! years inventor of the automobile’. <strong>The</strong> year 1886
is significant in the evolution of the automobile.
When Carl Benz registered his patent number 37435
in Berlin on that January day, nobody could possibly
have imagined the implications it would have
on the motoring world. Almost at the same time,
less than 100km away, inventor and entrepreneur
Gottlieb Daimler was working on his motor wagon,
to which he gave the finishing touches that very
year. However, Benz and Diamler had to wait for
some years before their inventions could be brought
together to become a profitable joint venture. And
the rest, as they say, is history.
Gemany is celebrating the event this year with
gusto. <strong>The</strong> national tourism office has made the
auto industry a highlight of its annual programme.
<strong>The</strong> southwestern region of Baden-Wuerttemburg
year. In Stuttgart, the Mercedes-Benz museum
emphasised the importance of the automobile:
“<strong>The</strong> invention of Daimler and Benz has changed
the world for the better -- and it will continue to
do so. History shows that when a society becomes
physically mobile it also becomes socially mobile
and economically successful.”
Focusing on the future, Dr Zetsche added: “As
the inventor of the automobile, Daimler strives to
be at the forefront of shaping future mobility. If
Daimler and Benz were still alive today, they would
advise us to make green cars even more fascinating
and fascinating cars even greener. Only attractive
innovations are effective innovations.”
Spot on time for the anniversary and after
65 years of post-war production, the Mercedes-
Benz brand has reached a new milestone -- 30mn
automobiles with the three-pointed star have been
Added Dr Zetsche: “This unit-sales jubilee is
another major milestone in the history of our brand
and demonstrates the popularity our cars have
enjoyed for many decades with customers around
the world.”
<strong>The</strong> 125th anniversary is not only significant for
growth through the launch of new models and new
facility openings such as the new state-of-the-art
showroom that has opened in the West Bay area.
This is the second BMW Group facility in Qatar. And
from a marketing standpoint, we will continue
to involve our brands in the major sporting and
business events hosted in the country to show our
support to the country and ensure strong brand
exposure.”
As a leading German auto brand, how does BMW
view the company’s dealership in Qatar, customers
and their brand loyalty?
36 GERMANY Special Report
Says Dr Joerg Breuer, Managing Director of
BMW Middle East Regional Office: “Our brands are
represented and perform well in Qatar as a result of
the strong and successful partnership that we have
had with Alfardan Automobiles for the last 16 years.
Together, we will continue to work closely to launch
new and exciting models and deliver a premium
service that our customers expect from the BMW
Group brands.
“With regards to customers, our 13% sales
growth in the Qatar market for the first eight months
of this year shows customers’ appreciation and
loyalty to our brands. Although the profile of our
customers can vary considerably, for example a
BMW 3 Series customer has a very different profile
to an X model or 7 Series customer or a BMW
customer differs from a MINI customer; one common
characteristic amongst them all is their respect and
desire for the BMW Group brands.”
<strong>The</strong> BMW Group has once again been named the
automotive industry’s sector leader in the ranking
published last month by the SAM Group for the Dow
Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI). <strong>The</strong> BMW Group
has therefore been the world’s most sustainable
automobile manufacturer for seven consecutive
years. <strong>The</strong> BMW Group is also the only company in
the automotive industry to be listed in this family of
indexes every year since it was established in 1999.
“<strong>The</strong> success of the BMW Group is built on a
long-term approach and responsible action. We
are pleased to be recognised by the renowned
Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes,” said Dr Norbert
Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management
of BMW AG. “Being ranked sector leader for the last
seven years underscores our corporate strategy and
approach. I would like to thank all of our company’s
95,000 employees whose day-to-day work makes
this progress possible,” added Reithofer.
Sustainability is an integral part of the
BMW Group’s corporate strategy. <strong>The</strong> company
appointed an environmental officer back in 1973
-– the automotive industry’s first. Since then, the
company has systematically refined its concept of
sustainability. In 2009, corporate sustainability was
firmly established as a corporate target at Group
level. Today, the Sustainability Board, comprising all
members of the Board of Management, defines the
strategic alignment through binding internal targets,
and the Executive Sustainability Committee paves
the way for implementation in the relevant divisions.
Car makers are bracing for tough times as
Europe’s economic woes threaten consumer
confidence at a time when governments can ill
afford to bail out the industry again and revive
incentive schemes for buyers of new cars.
Executives at the Frankfurt auto show said they
did not expect a crash of the same magnitude as the
one that engulfed the industry in 2009, but this time
they will not be helped by scrappage schemes, and
they have probably missed their chance to make the
capacity cuts many think are needed.
Volkswagen is prepared for any possible
downturn in coming months, Chief Executive
Martin Winterkorn said. “We are aware that success
in coming months won’t be handed to us on a
plate, but we are well-prepared because this group
has a strategy and a product range that allow us
to respond flexibly to possible fluctuations on
individual markets,” he said at the Frankfurt Auto
Show.
Volkswagen group vehicle sales for the first eight
months of the year rose almost 15% to 5.4mn, he
said. (With inputs from DPA)
HEALTHCARE
Destination Germany
for healthcare tourists
Germany is an attractive destination for medical
tourism. With world-class doctors, advanced
technology, high standards, and quick
treatment, it’s an ideal choice for patients from the
Middle East as also from other countries in Europe and
the United States.
<strong>The</strong> country has a strong tradition of medicine,
research and state-of-the-art facilities in different
cities supported by medical associations, licencing
enforcement and doctor boards.
All German citizens have health coverage resulting
in a high hospital density. Though Germans often
complain about their healthcare system, compared
to European and American standards, the German
counterpart is impressive. <strong>The</strong>re is a rigorous training
process for all medical professionals in the country.
<strong>The</strong> major cities like Berlin, Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt,
Hamburg … are known for some of the reputable
hospitals in the world. Germany is a federation
of 16 states, each with its own government and
independent administration. With medical tourism
being promoted by governments and businesses
in different states, numerous agents have come up
with the idea of offering modern treatments at costeffective
rates. One of the major reasons for Germany
being the top destination for medical tourists is high
quality and low cost.
Compared to other European countries, the rates
are highly competitive and are commonly 50% of
those in the United States. <strong>The</strong> high hospital density
results in shorter waitlists for treatment. Many
American and British patients go to Germany to avail
of these facilities.
From general surgery to joint replacements and
hair transplantation, almost all kinds of treatments
and procedures are available. Rare surgical facilities
like bone marrow transplantation, colon surgery,
endoprothetics, neurosurgery, reconstructive and
robotic surgery, spine surgery, aesthetic surgery and
many others are carried out by highly efficient medical
staff.
In addition to the high success rate in treatments
and compassionate patient care, the EU member state
offers a wide range of health spas and resorts, making
the recovery period one of relaxation and luxury.
This is one of the reasons why Germany attracts
a large number of Arab medical tourists, many of
them like to combine a traditional holiday with a
medical treatment. <strong>The</strong> development can also be seen
as part of a general improvement of the economic
and political relationship between Germany and
Arab countries. ‘Made in Germany’ has always been
a symbol and guarantee of high quality in the Arab
World.
A well established network of service agencies
rounds out the infrastructure of medical tourism. <strong>The</strong>
service agencies provide visa and logistical assistance,
multilingual translation assistance, all-around
treatment, accounting and insurance services, and
basic travel services.
Such agencies are available all over Germany. <strong>The</strong>y
have developed websites in Arabic and have their
network of representatives in the Middle East. <strong>The</strong>
promotion of Germany worldwide as a medical service
provider is partially co-ordinated by the Committee
for the Promotion of German Medicine Abroad. <strong>The</strong>
major aim of the committee is “to foster international
dialogue on medical care by providing specialist
information and to promote the advanced level of
medical care found in German hospitals.”
Another organisation that has a long tradition
in promoting healthcare and medicine is the Essenbased
VVA Health Marketing, which belongs to
the Düsseldorf-based Vereinigte Verlagsanstalten
Germany has a strong tradition of medicine, research and state-of-the-art facilities. In the picture, director Gernot
Ruecker of the Rostock simulation facility and emergency training centre uses a dummy to demonstrate how to feel
a person’s pulse with a high-tech simulation apparatus for physicians and emergency workers at the University
Clinic in Rostock, Germany. <strong>The</strong> picture of a collapsed lung is on display on the 60-inch multimedia board in the
back. With the help of the world’s most modern heart-lung-ausculation apparatus 124 possible heart and lung
diseases can be simulated, displayed and furthermore diagnosed on the dummies.
Communication group. Arab patients and their
families are looking for a combination of high
quality medical treatment, privacy and leisure time
activities. Privacy is provided by excellent standards
of confidentiality and security. Many of the medical
centres and hospitals are located in picturesque areas
like the Taunus Mountains, the Rhine Valley, southern
Bavaria and the Black Forest. For those who want
to explore urban spaces, the hospitals and clinics of
the metropolitan areas have excellent facilities and
specialists.
<strong>The</strong> most popular treatments requested by Arab
patients are plastic surgery, physical therapy and
treatment of heart disease, infertility and orthopedic
problems. While the patients of cosmetic medicine are
looking primarily for privacy and high quality in small
private clinics and medical resorts, the cardiology and
gynecology patients are mainly to be found in the
huge medical centres attached to medical faculties
and colleges in big cities. Arab patients are often
accompanied by family members and friends. In the
summer season, many Arab families combine vacation
with medical treatment, especially if the patient
does not need urgent and/or risky treatment. Hotels,
furnished apartments and luxurious villas are offered
by healthcare agencies and traditional real-estate
agents. <strong>The</strong> exact numbers of Arab patients visiting
Germany is not known, but the boom of support
agencies, advertisement activities and participation
in medical fairs and events reflects the increase in the
numbers of patients and revenues.
Medical tourism was for a long time a privilege of
individual wealthy patients in developed countries,
characterised by sanatoriums for tuberculosis patients
in Switzerland or rheumatism sufferers in Italy.
Medical tourists are becoming a new target group.
Many potential patients in countries with high-cost
healthcare are looking for cheaper services in other
countries, while well-off patients worldwide are
looking for the best treatment in the most comfortable
and secure atmosphere. Germany is indeed one of the
best addresses in the world for high quality in medical
services and hospitality.
Liposuction is one of the most popular elective
procedures chosen by people looking to trim some
weight off. In Germany for example, 19,000 such
operations were carried out in 2009.
However, liposuction should not be used as an
alternative to normal weight loss methods, says
Joachim Graf von Finckenstein of the German Institute
for Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery.
“Those who think they will lose lots of kilos as the
result of an operation are mistaken,” he says. People
with a Body Mass Index (BMI) above 25 should begin
with exercise and a change of diet in an effort to lose
excess weight. “Diet and activity work on the whole
body, liposuction only targets certain problem zones,”
Graf von Finckenstein explains.
<strong>The</strong>re are also clear borders when it comes to
using the procedure for beauty purposes. “Too much
fat shouldn’t be removed because otherwise the
skin becomes wrinkled or flabby, making tightening
necessary,” says Professor Dennis von Heimburg, a
plastic surgery specialist in Frankfurt.
A maximum of two litres of fat can be sucked away
by removing excess fat from deposits located between
the skin and muscle on an outpatient basis. “More can
be achieved with larger interventions,” adds Graf von
Finckenstein.
It’s important that the fat removal is even and
gentle to prevent unwanted side-effects such as
bumps and wrinkles. A small deposit of fat between
the skin and muscle must remain. “Otherwise, there is
a threat of adhesions,” warns von Heimburg.
“It’s important that liposuction takes place in
harmony with the body’s contours. Otherwise the
result doesn’t look good,” he added.
erman author Kurt Tucholsky once wrote to his
publisher Ernst Rowohlt that he wanted to do
nothing else except to relax during his upcoming
vacation.
This wish was completely in keeping with the
trend of that time, 80 years ago. What the Germans
call “Sommerfrische” (summer freshness) as a way of
recovering from the stress of everyday life in the city
was very much the mode then.
<strong>The</strong> same applies today, except that the
terminology has changed. “Bergwelt statt Burnout”
-- mountain world instead of burnout -- is the slogan
which various Upper Bavarian tourism offices in
the region around Germany’s tallest mountain, the
Zugspitze, are using to appeal to a newly-discovered
target group, “stressed-out city dwellers.”
On offer is a whole range of activities, from hiking
along trails to the pace and rhythm of one’s own breath
to spiritual tours.
“Our lives are turning increasingly faster and more
exhausting,” says Joerg Christoephler, the managing
director of the Ammergau Alpen tourism office which
came up with the idea of the anti-burnout
campaign.
“People are asking about the health aspects
available and we are fortunate that in this region we not
only have magnificent nature but also the people who
can come up with the appropriate offer.”
<strong>The</strong>re’s Joachim Renz, for example. <strong>The</strong> relaxation
HEALTHCARE
Recharging your batteries in the Bavarian Alps
Getting away from everyday
life like this is what turborelaxation
in the Bavarian
Alps is all about.
“Naturally you can also relax in the outdoors
without guidance,” Renz acknowledges. “But almost
everyone knows the feeling: on the first day of
returning to work after vacation, the recuperation is
immediately gone.” His seminars are aimed at teaching
the vacationers how to retain their vacation relaxation
once they are back in the workplace.
In order to learn this kind of turbo-relaxation, Renz
tells his group, you have to have your head free. And
in his experience this works best of all when out amid
nature. <strong>The</strong> basics of meditation which visitors can
acquire without much effort can, with a bit of practice,
also be applied in the office, he says.
About 20km away, in a meadow in the Murmauer
Moos region, stands Katharina Braendlein. With the
Alps as a background setting, she is explaining to a
group the basics of Asian archery.
“Finding one’s stance, focussing in on the target,
building up tension, and then, letting go,” Braendlein
says as she pulls an arrow from her quiver, draws back
the string and lets loose the arrow towards the target.
<strong>The</strong> woman with a university degree in forestry
offers hikes in the woodlands, team-building seminars
outdoors and relaxation courses, including yoga
classes high up on a mountain pasture.
Archery is above all loved by the men, Braendlein
notes. So as a precautionary measure, she does not
try to lure them using the term “meditation” -- that
would sound too “esoteric,” she explains. Braendlein
instead uses the term “focusing,” although she says
that archery in fact is a meditative activity. “Just try to
hit a target if you are thinking about something else,”
she says. “This is completely impossible.”
Norbert Parucha does not shy away from using the
word meditation. <strong>The</strong> physical therapist was involved
in drafting the concept of the “meditation trail” in the
Ammergau Alps region which was opened in June
2009.
Covering a distance of 85km, the trail has 15 waystations
on a route between the famous Wieskirche
church and the landmark Linderhof Castle. At each
station, a signboard provides information about the
site.
“This valley has been influenced for centuries
by Augustinian and Benedictine monks,” Parucha
explains. “ This heritage is evident everywhere.” - DPA

Food for thought
German expats share nostalgias, tastes and flavours
An island to relax from work days to me is the Fish Market
at the Katarra, where you can catch the various facets
of the whole country within a tiny universe, especially
during lunch time. In this cosy melting pot of food and
culture, you are served the finest hamour and king fish as
well as fresh, tasty Norwegian salmon fillets. All fish are
gently grilled and kept juicy, then served with a string of
rosemary and soft, big and crispy potato wedges as well as
Asiatic spiced vegetables including baby corn, asparagus
and slices of salad and zucchini. Alongside you may relish
the basket of vegetables, the hummus and Arabic bread
whilst drinking a lemon mint or a mocktail made with
ginger, lime, coke and mint leaves. Even though I love my
home country and sometimes well miss its various, delicious
dishes, it all eases here, away from business hours and traffic.
I can enjoy talks and laughs with my friends, whilst watching
the mixture of different nationalities around as well as recognizing rays of sunlight
twinkling from the tops of the waves of the Gulf outside the restaurant.
<strong>The</strong> German Cuisine in its entire facet is so tasty and great
that it is very difficult for me to choose just one dish.
Sometimes I miss my home. But I am a passionate Chef and
every time I feel homesick, I prepare myself some typical
authentic traditional food. My favourite dish depends on
the season—in Spring I love the Asparagus from Bavaria
with wild garlic- Hollandaise and parsley potato. In
Summer I like the light cuisine; some corn salad with crisp
bacon flakes and a pan fried fillet of brook trout caught in
the clear brook just next to our home. In Fall I prefer ovenroasted
saddle of venison in herb crust with German style
potato gnocchi (Schupfnudeln), red cabbage and marron
glacè. In Winter, the nicest season for me, I love Liver
dumplings in a strong beef Consommé or Schwäbische
Kässpätzle; as dessert I will enjoy a homemade apple strudel
from my wife, before going skiing. But the best tradition
from my family is coming together, cooking together and
enjoying the food with a glass of wine.
I have lived and worked in the State of Qatar for almost
11 years and one of the things I love most about this
country is the fact that it is largely surrounded by water
from where fresh fish is regularly caught. Even though
Hamburg is not directly located at the North Sea, our
cuisine is characterized by fish dishes, historically coming
from the Elbe river, that gives Hamburg its maritime flair. I
remember driving down to the Corniche during the early
hours of the Friday mornings to buy the fresh fish being
caught by the fishermen (not without my wife spending
minimum half an hour bargaining). <strong>The</strong>se moments would
always remind me of my home town, Hamburg, where the
famous “Hamburger Fischmarkt” (Hamburg fish market)
Philipp Luehrs
would attract visitors with the fresh fish smell and noisy
Regional Vice President
bargaining between traders since 1703. But when I taste the
Middle East
delicious mouth watering fish Qatar has to offer, Grouper
(Arabic: Hamour), Red Snapper (Arabic: Nahash Ahmar) or
White Sea bass (Arabic: Karoos) . . . I don’t miss Hamburg any more.
Our home is based in Bavaria, South of Munich. We like to
eat international food. Our food varies from home made
German & Czech style food to Mediterranean food as well
as Asian and Arabic food. We love to cook together and
all of us are crazy about “Schnitzel.” I prepare it in different
variations, Chicken, Veal and Turkey. <strong>The</strong> “Schnitzel”
gets served together with smashed potato and baked
cauliflower. <strong>The</strong> second favoured feed we all like and cook
is “Kaesespaetzle,” that self-made noodles, fried onions,
mixed up together, topped with Cheese and baked in the
oven till the cheese melts. Everybody around the table is
just happy if I make one or the other for Dinner. It reminds
me as well to situations I have back home. <strong>The</strong> outcome is
always the same—at the end of the dinner, no single piece
is left.
Germany is not all about sausages, but I do love the
tiny ‘Nuernberger’ sausage or ‘Bratwurst.’ You eat 3
of them in a bun with smooth German mustard, or
6, 12, 18 pieces with well-cooked sauerkraut on a
plate—mouth-watering! Another favourite is thin
sliced juicy roast meat with red cabbage, dumplings
and gravy. We do have several type of dumplings—
raw ones, fried ones, bread ones—they are fantastic
even without meat and only the delicious brown
gravy. Another dish on the top of my list is one of the
schnitzels (thin slices of meat dipped in flour, egg
and breadcrumbs fried in a pan with butter), served
plain with a slice of lemon or with one of the many
gravies, e.g. hunter gravy (mushrooms), gypsy gravy
(bell peppers), cream gravy . . . the list is endless.
When I’m close to Frankfurt a must is the ‘Gruene
Sosse’ (Green sauce). It’s a cold yoghurt-based sauce
with 7 different freshly picked garden herbs, served with new boiled potatoes
or cooked beef. A true delight! Lastly, guess what, again a sausage very famous
in Berlin is the good old ‘Curry Wurst,’ which is a beef sausage cut in small slices
covered with a spicy ketchup sauce and sprinkled with curry powder, served
with a bun. Guten Appetit!!
It is like the first date, the first real job
bears unforgotten memories. I started
with the Eurospeedway Lausitz Operating
Company, running those days’ Europe’s
biggest motorsport circuit—one of the
most prestigious projects to build up
infrastructure in the East of Germany
after reunification. <strong>The</strong> Lausitz cuisine is
like its people—simple but fine as soon
as you have a taste. Of these, one dish
is extraordinarily popular: potatoes in
the skin with linseed oil and quark (curd
cheese). I loved it as it is light veggie
food, rich in high fibre and of course, easy
to cook—what was important for me,
being single those days. It is the gold-
shimmering oil which makes the dish so healthy, extremely high
on polyunsaturated fatty acids, protecting well from heart diseases.
My first job definitely helped me to widen my horizon and better
understand fellow countrymen although we had completely different
social backgrounds, being raised in contrary political systems during
the Cold War.
n <strong>The</strong> cake layers are made without any leavening agent such as baking powder—so that the only thing that
makes the layers rise in the baking is the air you’ve beaten into the batter. You therefore have to concentrate on
incorporating as much air as possible into the batter during the beating process. If using a mixer, make sure to use
the whisk attachment instead of the normal cake beater. If using an egg beater or hand mixer, you may need to
beat the basic egg and sugar mixture for longer than ten minutes to get it light and fluffy enough.
n Because the cake doesn’t contain any shortening, it stales quickly. <strong>The</strong> butter cream filling/icing therefore fulfills
another function besides just tasting nice and holding the layers apart: it keeps the cake from going stale
prematurely. If as you’re constructing the cake you start getting the feeling that there isn’t going to be enough
butter cream to cover it evenly on the outside to at least 1/4 inch thick, pause to make some more butter cream.
Later on you’ll be glad you did.
FOR THE CAKE: Beat eggs, sugar, and vanilla together until thick and fluffy, about 10 minutes. Alternately fold
chocolate and flour into the egg mixture, ending with flour. Pour the batter into three 8-inch cake pans that have
been well greased and floured. (Do not use oil to grease the pans: use butter or Crisco or a similar solid fat. If you
use oil, the layers will probably stick to the pans. Also make sure you do the greasing and flouring even if you have
nonstick pans.)
Bake the layers in a preheated 350 degree F oven for 10 to 15 minutes or until a cake tester inserted in the center
comes out clean. Cool cakes in pans for 5 minutes; then carefully turn out on racks and allow to cool completely.
FOR THE SYRUP: Make syrup by mixing together sugar and water and boiling for 5 minutes. When syrup has cooled,
stir in kirsch. Prick the cake layers and pour syrup over all 3 layers.
FOR THE FILLING: To make the butter-cream filling, beat together sugar and butter until well blended. Add egg
yolk; beat until light and fluffy, about 3 to 5 minutes. Fold in Kirsch.
CAKE ASSEMBLY: To assemble cake, place 1 layer on a cake plate. Spread with butter cream filling. Using 3/4 cup of
the cherries, which have been patted dry, drop cherries evenly over cream. Place second layer on cake. Repeat. Place
third layer on top. Fold 2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar into the whipped cream. Cover the sides and top of the
cake with whipped cream.
Decorate top of cake with remaining 1/2 cup cherries. Grated chocolate is perfectly acceptable as a topping,
but if you prefer to make chocolate curls from a chocolate bar, shave them off the bar (at room temperature) with
a vegetable peeler. Refrigerate the curls until ready to use. Press the chocolate curls on sides of cake, sprinkle a few
on the top. Chill the cake until serving time. Afterwards, because of the cream, keep the cake in the fridge until it’s
finished. Recipe courtesy: Best Western Hotel, Doha
Every time I am back in my hometown Hamburg, one of the first
things I do is buy a “Franzbroetchen” at a bakery. A “Franzbroetchen”
is a very sweet pastry which contains lots of sugar, butter and
cinnamon. For me it tastes like home. I love it best when the dough
is still a little wet and when it has lots of cinnamon. Apart from that,
I am a big fan of potatoes. My mom used to live close to a farm
which had the best potatoes I have ever tried. After cooking you
could even eat them cold, just with a little bit of salt on top. And
I love fried potatoes especially when my Dad is doing them with
bacon and onions. Only he can manage to make the potatoes very
crispy. Another German dish which I have already cooked in Doha
is “Koenigsberger Klopse” which reminds me of my Grandma as
it is a very traditional home style food. <strong>The</strong> Koenigsberger Klopse
are cooked meatballs which are served in a slightly sour roux with
capers. And of course, as a side dish I prefer boiled potatoes.
Of course as a German I love German food. Any “potato-related”
dish makes me happy. Heavy German dishes at 40 degrees in
the middle of Doha, why not? What is German food for me? It is
all about feeling home. Anything that my mum and dad cooked
for me was the best German food ever and topped any 5 star
restaurant. Trying to copy my parents´ recipes and seeing my
family and friends indulging in these culinary secrets are always
joyful moments.
EDUCATION
Learning the German way
(a garden for kids) originated
in Germany. It is both a German word
‘Kindergarten’
and educational concept that has come
into practice the world over. And yet, it is losing
popularity in Germany as it is only optional for
children to attend kindergarten and is not part of the
state-supported school system.
German education lays emphasis on vocational
training. <strong>The</strong> structure of school education in the
country is crafted in such a manner that a pupil’s
academic pursuit in a particular field is borne out
of his/her interest and inclination. This aspect
is different from other parts of the world where
primary and secondary schooling is common for all
students.
Germany is 99% literate. Education is compulsory
by law and schooling is mandatory for children
above six, there is no leeway for homeschooling.
State schools do not charge tution fees.
Germany is a federation of 16 states, each with
its own government and largely autonomous of its
internal administration. Education is primarily a state
responsibility, the federal government has little role
to play, and therefore education may vary from state
to state.
<strong>The</strong> schools in Germany don’t have uniforms,
though there have been a debate at some stage
for introducing uniforms for the benefit of students
with lesser style sense. <strong>The</strong>re is no concept of school
lunch or mid-day meals in Germany, most schools
start by 7 or 8 in the morning and end by around
1 in the afternoon. Extracurricular activities are
determined individually by each institution and
varies from school to school.
<strong>The</strong> levels of schooling
Kindergarten
In Germany, kindergarten is for children
between 3-6 years. It is not part of the regular
public school system and is not free. Kindergarten
is aimed at making a smooth transition between
home and formal schooling. Children are taught
Kindergarten in Berlin last month.
to play, communicate and develop their social
skills. Attending Kindergarten is not mandatory
in Germany but a majority of children attend the
classes often run by city or town administrations,
churches, or registered societies.
Grundschule
<strong>The</strong> formal education begins with Grundschule,
in public schools it’s offered free. Children attend
Grundschule between the ages of six and 10 or
12, the first four years of primary schooling (the
first six years in some German cities). On their first
day at school children bring a hamper of candy
and presents for their classmates and the senior
students put on a performance for the newcomers
and their parents. <strong>The</strong> first lessons in life are learnt
in Grundschule. Apart from reading, writing and
arithmetic, children are taught science, local history,
geography and other subjects.
In the final year of Grundschule (the fourth or
sixth year depending on the state), the decision
is arrived at as to whether pupils will attend the
Hauptschule (fifth to ninth year), Realschule (fifth
to tenth year), Gymnasium (fifth to 12th or 13th
year). Gesamtschule is offered in some regions in
Germany as an alternative to the above three. It
combines these three types of high school and
offers differentiation at a later stage. <strong>The</strong> decision on
the next level is based entirely on pupils’ academic
performance.
Hauptschule
<strong>The</strong> lowest rung in the education system is the
Hauptschule or the general school. It>s begins with
5th grade and goes up through the 9th grade. <strong>The</strong>
main aim of the Hauptschule is to offer students with
average grades or below, most of whom will not
attend a university, an adequate general academic
education. However, some of the graduates may
attend university later in life. It teaches mostly the
same subjects as the Realschule and Gymnasium,
but at a slower pace.
At Hauptschule, students prepare for
occupations that require training. <strong>The</strong>y also continue
with the basic subjects as well as English. After a
student graduates a Hauptschule they can go on to a
vocational school which lasts about 2 years.
Realschule
Realschule is where pupils learn the basic
subjects which will prepare them for a middle-level
job in business. Ranked between Hauptschule
(lowest) and Gymnasium (highest), Realschule start
at the age of 10 or 11 and typically finish at the
age of 16–17. After graduating from a Realschule,
bright students are allowed to attend a professional
Gymnasium or a general-education Gymnasium. At a
Students of German School Doha.
Realschule, a pupil gets an extended education and
learns at least one foreign language, usually English.
Other subjects are geography, social sciences,
economics, history, religious education, and physical
education.
It’s possible to transfer from a Realschule to a
Gymnasium, if the pupil has high grades. At the
end of six years, students graduate with a diploma
called the Mittlere Reife. <strong>The</strong> next step is normally
a vocational school where they learn skills that
put them in to the middle strata of business and
industry. Salesmen, nurses, mid-level civil servants,
secretaries, and so forth generally have been to
Realschule.
Gymnasium
Gymnasium sounds like a fitness centre but it
has nothing to do with sports or physical education.
In Germany, Gymnasium translates to secondary
school with a strong academic focus. Most of them
are public, state-funded schools, though some are
private and charge tution fees.
Students are admitted at 10 or 13 years of age
and are required to have completed four to six years
of Grundschule. Admission is dependent on a letter
of recommendation written by a teacher, although
when parents petition, an examination can be used
to decide the outcome.
<strong>The</strong> subjects taught differ from school to school,
but generally include German, mathematics,
informatics, physics, chemistry, biology, geography,
music, history, philosophy, social sciences … and
several foreign languages.
For students in the lower section nearly the
entire curriculum of a Gymnasium is compulsory
whereas in upper years more choice of subjects
is available. Academic standards are high as the
Gymnasium typically caters for the upper 25-35% of
the ability range. Not just academics, schools focus
on producing well-rounded individuals, so physical
education and religion or ethics are compulsory.
Abitur
At the end of secondary education (12-13 years
of schooling), students take a final examination or
Abitur which enables them to attend university.
Abitur is more like an entrance test that facilitates
further studies. A certificate, mentioning the
grades and academic achievements, is issued for
successful candidates. <strong>The</strong> importance of the Abitur
has grown beyond admission to the university, it
has increasingly become a prerequisite to start an
apprenticeship in some professions (for eg insurance,
banking and other sectors). More than just being a
leaving certificate, the Abitur is widely regarded as a
matter of personal prestige as well.
(DSD) – An added value
By Nikolaus Kircher
In the landscape of private education in Qatar
the German school holds a special position:
It provides an opportunity for all German
speaking students in the country who would like
a cosmopolitan school with a variety of languages
taught by native speakers. <strong>The</strong> school uses like
the other German schools in Djidda, Riyadh, Abu
Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah German curricula with
their underlying values and traditions. We celebrate
the German culture as well as promoting an
understanding of Qatar’s history and way of life.
Under the umbrella of the German Foreign
Office and the Ministers of Education we run a
Kindergarten, Pre-School, Primary school and
Grammar School. We also co-operate with the
Supreme Council of Private Education who have
shown great interest and support. Contacts and
exchanges with other expat schools in Doha will
widen the cultural horizon of our students and will
enrich the experience of our teachers.
<strong>The</strong> fast growing school opened in 2008 with
only 20 students and 3 teachers and has reached 170
students and 15 teachers in the current school year.
We expect around 400 students when the school has
reached its full capacity from gr. 1 to12 in 2015.
We teach 10 to 12 subjects in each class including
German, English and French. From grade 7 onwards
some subjects are taught in English or bilingual
English/German. Academic standards are compared
with partner schools in Germany to ensure that
we attain the highest achievement possible. Our
aim is that in four years time our first students will
graduate with the German International Abitur
which is a highly regarded certificate. Our exams
will be supervised by German inspectors and be
acknowledged not only as an access to universities
in Germany but all over the world.
DSD encompasses high academic standard and a
holistic approach. We strive to gradually develop the
physical, mental, intellectual and spiritual talents of
our students. <strong>The</strong> school caters to the development
of each child individually in order to use his/her
knowledge, skills and abilities to contribute to the
greater community and a democratic society. We
know that in later life our students need a strong
ENVIRONMENT
New Directions
in Germany’s Energy Policy
<strong>The</strong> celebration of Germany’s National Day with
this special issue is a welcome opportunity
to update the readership of the Gulf Times of
the latest energy policy trends in Europe’s largest
economy. As this article will explore, the State of
Qatar’s guiding Qatar National Vision 2030 and
Germany’s energy and environmental policy have
much in common.
To recall, the Vision seeks to protect the
environment, create a diversified economy based
on sustainability principles, improve local air
quality and expedite the advances in establishing
a ‘knowledge-based’ society. Furthermore, the
National Development Strategy 2011-2016
encourages environmental development and strives
“to ensure harmony among economic growth, social
development and environmental protection”.
On this special day for Germany, it is apparent
that our two nations share the same aspirations to
achieve economic sustainability and environmental
protection, at a time when Germany is re-directing its
energy mix towards a green economy and the State
of Qatar is actively striving to combine economic
sustainability with its noble environmental protection
ambitions.
Yet one can be forgiven for noting that the
direction of Germany’s energy policy has, in recent
months, been somewhat confusing. As late as
October 2010, the German Government approved
its ‘Energiekonzept 2050’ - an Energy policy for an
environmentally sound, reliable and affordable supply
of energy up to 2050.<strong>The</strong> policy envisages that by
2020, 35% of final energy consumption should come
from renewable sources, increasing to 50% by 2030,
65% by 2040 and no less than 80% by 2050.
From the internationally perspective however,
the Energiekonzept received most attention for
confirming the decision to extend the operation of
Germany’s fleet of nuclear power plants until 2034,
beyond the previously agreed end date of 2020. This
policy was the status quo in March 2011, when the
devastating events at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear
Power Plant unfolded.
<strong>The</strong> period between the events in Japan and
June 2011 was marked by a series of public protests
against nuclear energy in Germany and as a result,
the Government re-visited the question of the
‘Atomausstieg’, the phasing out of nuclear energy in
Germany. On 6 June 2011, the Cabinet announced
a new direction in its energy policy with its
confirmation of the Atomaustieg and the expansion
of renewable energy for Germany. In August 2011, the
decision to cease generating electricity from nuclear
power by no later than 2022 became effective.
Already, eight of Germany’s nuclear power plants
have been permanently taken off the national grid,
with the remaining plants systematically going offline
between 2015 and 2019. Only three of Germany’s
youngest fleet of nuclear power plants will continue
generating electricity by no later than 2022.
Some may ask on what grounds the above
decision could have been taken, when in 2010,
Germany’s heavily industrialised and export-driven
economy was still reliant on nuclear energy to
generate 22% of its domestic electricity supplies? <strong>The</strong>
answer is clear – based on a policy direction of ‘safe
energy supplies for the future’, the Government drew
the conclusion that the residual safety considerations
of nuclear energy were no longer tenable for
By Ruediger Tscherning
Germany. Germany’s energy future clearly lies in an
expedited expansion of renewable energy capacity, in
particular solar power and offshore wind energy.
In my opinion, this bold and strategic decision by
the Federal Government cannot be faulted, not least
due to the fact that this direction has the potential
to pioneer a new model of economic sustainability.
But one must also be realistic. Sustained economic
development cannot be decoupled from price
stability and long term energy supply security.
To maintain economic sustainability, Germany
must deliver on large-scale renewable energy
capacity expansion. Predictably, such change in
energy policy direction comes at a price and it is
widely anticipated that the high capital investments
required will result in short to medium term electricity
price increases. To illustrate, the level of investment
needed to expand offshore wind energy capacity to
a target of 25GW by 2030 is estimated at €75bn. In
addition, a further investment of €6bn will have to be
made by 2020, in order to accommodate renewable
energy in Germany’s national grid capacity.
Germany’s decision to opt out from nuclear
energy also has the potential to re-open one of
the most controversial discussions in European
climate and energy policy, the so-called ‘carbonleakage
debate’. To explain briefly, the European
Union’s unilateral action on climate change
mitigation (at present the Member States operate
the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme)
has resulted in energy-intensive industries such as
the steel, aluminium, chemical and pharmaceutical
industries arguing that their long term economic
competitiveness in Europe is under threat from
increasingly stringent and mandatory constraints to
emissions of greenhouse gases.
In Germany, these industries may now also
face the prospect of increased and unpredictable
electricity prices, due to the underlying short-term
risk that Germany’s renewable energy capacity
will not be in a position to meet the shortfall from
nuclear energy. This has the potential to create what
I would term the ‘green paradox’: carbon constrained
industries relocating to so-called ‘carbon havens’,
where lower environmental standards, the absence
of emission constraints and the prospect of lower
electricity prices would mean that goods can be
produced at correspondingly lower costs.
Already, however, there is positive evidence of
Germany’s industrial giants taking innovative steps
to addressing these anticipated constraints and price
increases. For example, Volkswagen AG announced in
September this year that it will invest $1.45bn in two
offshore wind farm projects in the North Sea.
Returning to the strategic interests of Qatar’s
Vision and Development Strategy, Germany’s new
direction in energy policy may also open up export
opportunities for the State of Qatar’s LNG economy.
As part of a ‘bridging technology’ to mitigate the
effects of shortfalls in nuclear energy capacity, 10GW
of new capacity from gas and coal fired power plants
will go on-line by 2013 and Qatar’s LNG resources
could supply part of this capacity expansion in
Germany, for example via the LNG import terminal of
Zeebrugge in Belgium.
For the State of Qatar, I actively encourage the
diversification of the energy mix, to include the
expansion of renewable energy, in particular solar
energy. This expansion can be justified on a number
of grounds that tie in with the National Vision and
Development Strategy.
I argue that by reducing the domestic
consumption of the State’s fossil fuels due to the
expansion of renewable energy and increased
energy efficiency, the generated ‘excess capacity’
of resources can be re-directed towards lucrative
global export markets. By building on the research
undertaken at Qatar Science and Technology Park
and the development of an indigenous solar energy
manufacturing industry, Qatar’s economy will be
diversified, establishing Qatar as a regional centre
for renewable energy. Harnessing Qatar’s renewable
energy potential will also add essential ‘green’
credentials to newly established manufacturing
industries in the State. By manufacturing goods
using Qatar’s indigenous solar energy, these newly
established manufacturing industries gain a vital
competitive and environmental edge over their global
competitors.
On this occasion, I call upon our two countries
to deepen their relationships through exchanges
of expertise on the many aspects of energy
and environmental policy. I am certain that the
forthcoming ecoQ Conference and Trade Fair in Doha
will provide for ample opportunities to strengthen
existing relations and to forge new and long lasting
strategic co-operations between the public and
private sectors of our countries.
TRAVEL
Many colours of Munich
By Detlef Berg
Millions of people attend the annual
Oktoberfest celebrations held in Munich.
<strong>The</strong> festival, which began on September 17
this year, comes to an end today. While that may be a
good reason to visit the capital of Bavaria, it certainly
is not the only one. <strong>The</strong> city has a lot more to offer.
Munich simply has everything that makes a
big city liveable: a centre with many churches and
imposing buildings of various architectural styles
-- baroque, gothic, classic. <strong>The</strong> city is located in close
proximity to the Alps and abounds in natural beauty.
It has a whole array of museums, theatres and
concert halls. <strong>The</strong>re are expensive shopping streets.
And naturally, there’s Schwabing, the district of
university students, street cafes, bars, bookstores
and boutiques. But in recent years its position as an
entertainment area has been surpassed by another
nightlife area, the Glockenbach district.
Nor can it be forgotten: Munich is a green city.
Numerous parks such as the famous Englischer
Garten, or meadowlands along the Isar River running
through the centre of the city, provide Munich’s
residents with fresh air and relaxation. And on the
warm summer evenings, locals and tourists alike
head to the more than 80 chestnut tree-covered
beer gardens around the city.
An especially fortunate development, according
to Munich Mayor Christian Ude, was that, after the
huge destruction of the World War II bombing raids,
Munich rebuilt its historic centre along the old
contours and kept to the original height of buildings.
<strong>The</strong> city did not go the route advocated at
the time by many an urban planner urging that
Munich should be re-invented to accommodate
the automobile. Now, the authentic reconstruction
of such buildings as the Old Town Hall, Sankt Peter
Church and the royal residence has proven to be the
right idea.
Where in other cities commercialisation
marched forward to conquer city centres, Munich’s
planners created room for religion, for outstanding
architecture and culture.
Munich opened yet another eye-popping
structure, the Museum Brandhorst, in the
Maxvorstadt area near the Isar River. Behind its
spectacular face of 36,000 ceramic louvres of 23
different colours, is a major collection of modern art
works by, among others, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol,
Damien Hirst, Josef Beuys, Bruce Nauman and Georg
Baselitz. In the first year after its May 2009 opening, it
drew 350,000 visitors.
Those attending Oktoberfest should also plan to
visit city museums, attend concerts at venues like
the Gasteig or Muffathalle, plan visits to the opera,
theatre or cinema or simply just stroll and shop on
the stretch from Karlsplatz to Marienplatz. Visitors
can also taste the authentic Bavarian cuisine in the
city’s numerous outdoor cafes.
While in Munich …
Go to the opera, theatre or cinema; Have
coffee and cake in one of the countless
outdoor cafes; Go for a leisurely stroll from
Karlsplatz to Marienplatz, explore the shops
and take in architectural marvel; Cycle
through the Englischer Garten; Get a real
taste of Bavaria and try the authentic cuisine;
Attend a concert at a venue like the Gasteig
or Muffathalle; Visit the zoo.
Munich’s Technical Museum is well worth a visit - and not just on a rainy day either.
According to the legend, Oktoberfest was not
created by some royal decree by the king, but rather
was the result of an initiative presented by private
citizens to celebrate the forthcoming October 12,
1810 wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess
<strong>The</strong>rese.
It was a horse race organised by citizens’ militias
as a side-show event which really launched the
enthusiasm for the festival. <strong>The</strong> euphoria was so
great that the grounds, after the Crown Princess
<strong>The</strong>rese’s wedding, were soon afterwards dubbed
the “<strong>The</strong>resienwiese” (<strong>The</strong>rese’s field). To this day,
another reference to the Oktoberfest is simply the
“Wiesn”.
<strong>The</strong> <strong>The</strong>resienwiese grounds still have the same
oval shape from the original horse racetrack. – DPA
120 years of winter
sports in Spitzingsee
<strong>The</strong> road to Germany’s oldest skiing area in the
Spitzingsee-Schliersee lakes region is like something
from an idyllic postcard. Traditional Upper Bavarian
farmhouses with wooden balconies, roofs covered
in deep snow and mountain trails can be seen. <strong>The</strong>
Schliersee Lake at the end of town is frozen in a
winter sleep.
If one proceeds through the town, goes past
the winter sports museum of Olympic skiing
champion Markus Wasmeier and then travels a few
kilometres further south one will see a mountain
overlooking the scene. Here is a small, but fine, skiing
area at Spitzingsee, or as a sign at the entrance says
“Wintersportplatz” (winter sports site).
Downhill skiing and snow boarding, crosscountry
skiing and snow-shoe trekking, sleigh-riding
and ice skating - there is nothing that winter sports
enthusiasts in the Spitzingsee-Tegernsee ski region
can’t do. <strong>The</strong> snow-white peaks of the Rotwand,
Miesing, Ruchenkoepfe, Aiplspitz and Jaegerkamp
mountains set the framework for the ski runs.
<strong>The</strong> area is little more than an hour’s drive from
Munich Airport -- virtually at the Bavarian capital’s
doorstep. <strong>The</strong> overwhelming number of visitors come
only for a few days, notes Stefan Heiss, manager of
the mountain lifts at Spitzingsee. “But we also have
many vacationers who come here with their children
and have purposely chosen a smaller skiing area.”
You get on the train at around 1,100m elevation
and it takes you up to 1,700m -- making the area
Germany’s second-highest winter sports setting after
the one at the Zugspitze, Germany’s tallest mountain.
“With our artificial snow-making machines we
can guarantee snow conditions on the slopes from
December to April,” Heiss says.
In the area around the Stuempfling and
Taubenstein mountains is a skiing area which is often
referred to as Munich’s own mountain. <strong>The</strong> best view
of the surrounding mountain scenery is afforded to
skiers taking the black-marked (the most difficult
category) ski run on the Rosskopf.
For those who are too challenged by a steep
slope, there are many viable alternatives. “Thirteen
red slopes for experienced skiers, five blue slopes
for beginners and the small ones rounds out the
offering,” Heiss says, referring to the intermediate and
beginners’ categories.
Spitzingsee is considered to be Germany’s oldest
winter sports venue. Going back more than 120 years,
a local book trader imported some wooden skis from
Finland and began cutting the first tracks through the
snow. Slopes were opened to the new sport and the
first skiing races were staged. <strong>The</strong> first chairlift was
installed in 1949. – DPA
<strong>The</strong> 7 Wonders of the BMW 7 Series
Over 30 years ago, BMW’s “large class” of cars
spawned a successor that was to become a
byword for luxury, elegance and innovation
- the BMW 7 Series. Today, the BMW 7 Series is not
only the flagship BMW model, but it also continues
to set design and technology trends in the luxury car
segment. Here are seven reasons for its resounding
success.
1. Middle East Design: An industry trendsetter from
its inception in 1976, the latest 5th generation
BMW 7 Series was designed by a Middle East
duo: Lebanese-born Karim Habib who is Head of
Exterior Design for all BMW models and Iranian
born, Nader Faghihzadeh who designed the
interior. Launched in November 2008, the BMW 7
Series is a harmonious blend of elegant and sporty
design and powerful performance that delivers
sheer driving pleasure.
2. It Speaks Your Language: BMW launched the
automotive industry’s first Arabic-language iDrive
control system which has an Arabic interface and
navigation system. So whether you are looking
for nearby hotels, need to receive or write emails,
or want to plan your leisure activities, all these
functions are provided with a male Arabic voice,
and with an option to switch to English.
3. Relevant Technologies to Keep You Connected:
BMW is also the first automobile manufacturer
to offer Bluetooth and unlimited use of Internet
in the car via the built-in screens and iDrive
controllers. Data such as emails, appointments,
contacts or text messages can all be accessed in
the Control Display via the Bluetooth connection.
Passengers in the rear can also browse websites
and access their e-mails through a separate iDrive
controller at any time. For safety reasons, those
in the front can only access these functions when
the car has safely stopped.
4. Fuel Efficiency with Power: <strong>The</strong> BMW 7 Series
is the most fuel-efficient vehicle in its class,
and more powerful and fuel efficient than the
predecessor model, proving that sustainability
and driving performance can go hand-in-hand.
In addition to the conventional BMW 7 Series
model, there is a BMW ActiveHybrid 7 which
combines the use of a combustion engine with
an electric motor giving significantly
more power while at the same
time, more than 15 per cent
lower fuel consumption and
emissions than the standard
BMW 750Li without hybrid
technology.
5. Connecting to the
Outside World: Under
the umbrella of BMW
ConnectedDrive, a wide range of new technology
features gives the driver and passenger’s
information and services to help make their
driving experience safer and more comfortable.
Some of these include Head-Up Display which
projects driving information such as speed,
navigation, direction and alerts onto the
windscreen, so that the driver’s attention stays on
the road; Lane Change Warning and Departure
Warning help the driver overtake and change
lanes safely by monitoring traffic conditions in
adjacent lanes with radar sensors.
6. A Work of Art in More Ways than One:
Highlighting the company’s commitment to
cultural event, BMW sponsored an international
youth piano competition and manufactured 100
special limited-edition BMW Individual 7 Series
models inspired by Steinway & Sons. Both exterior
and interior designs are modelled on the colours
of the piano keyboard and its contrast between
black and white. High quality craftsmanship
and the use of exquisite materials in the interior
give the 7 Series an even more exclusive and
sophisticated appearance.
7. <strong>The</strong> Joy of Sheer Driving Pleasure: Performance
is at the heart of every BMW that gives drivers
sheer driving pleasure <strong>The</strong> BMW 7 Series offers
customers a choice of four different engines: the
BMW 760Li 12 cylinder top-of-the-range, the
750Li V8 and the six cylinder 740Li and 730Li. All
models have TwinPower Turbo technology. <strong>The</strong>
engines’ incredibly responsive and High Precision
Injection ensures that exactly the right amount of
fuel enters the cylinders.
Doha Bank: Understanding Business and Culture
What jumps into the mind of a Qatari
when thinking about Germany? Is it
Mercedes, BMW and Porsche? Is it soccer?
Or engineering? Or the strength of the German
economy within the troubled European Union?
Deutsche Bahn’s (German Railways) involvement
in the Metro project for Doha and the rail- and
causeway to Bahrain? Or the German School in Doha
and the local Oktoberfest also taking place in Doha
these days?
And how about the Germans? And their first
thoughts about Qatar? <strong>The</strong> investments of Qatar
Investment Authority in big German companies like
Volkswagen, Porsche, Hochtief? <strong>The</strong> pictures from
Zurich when Qatar so proudly won the 2022 bid for
the soccer world cup? <strong>The</strong> tremendous economical
growth rates and the wealth from the gas and oil
production? Or—with uncomfortable and cold
winter in Central Europe now approaching—the
planning of a vacation in a warm region with
sunbathing and cultural experiences such as camel
riding and visiting the Museum of Islamic Art and the
souq?
Qatari–German relations have become a lot
closer in the last few years and clearly show good
further growth potential. <strong>The</strong> visit of both HH
<strong>The</strong> Emir to Germany and the visit of the German
President to Qatar last year have underlined that.
What does all that mean for a local Qatari bank?
Of course there is the look at growing trade volumes
between the two countries!
Germany rebounded strongly in 2010 when
its economy grew at an astonishing 3.5% after a
drop of 4.7% in 2009. Presently economic growth
in Germany is experiencing a slowdown. <strong>The</strong>
underlying trend for the economy is one of growth,
which reinforces the already established economic
upturn within the domestic market. According
to IMF economic outlook of September 2011 the
German economy is expected to grow at 2.7% in
2011. And the good news: Recently Fitch affirmed
Germany’s top AAA credit rating with a stable
outlook after the government agreed on “ambitious”
fiscal plans to reduce its debt load.
<strong>The</strong> slow progress in the German economy has
various causes. <strong>The</strong> instability of the global economy
has had and will always have a major influence in the
German foreign trade activities, as the country is one
of the largest exporting nations in the world. On the
other hand Germany had to experience a remarkable
increase in energy import cost such as for gas and
oil. Costs could even go up more as the German
government has recently decided to completely exit
nuclear energy production in the country.
Even though the mood in the economy is
dampened, its outlook remains positive. <strong>The</strong>re has
been an expansion in industry production, and it
is expected that foreign trade will continue to rise
giving further impulse to the economy with very
good demand from countries like India, China and
others.
Consumer climate in Germany declined in
August 2011, even though the willingness to buy
improved significantly. <strong>The</strong> possible burdens and
consequences of the troubles of the Eurozone
countries and the German support for ailing
countries are widely discussed among the
population as at the same time public libraries or
pools get closed in order to cut public spending.
<strong>The</strong> above list of successfully growing bilateral
relations in trade and economic cooperation is not at
all complete. Delegations from one country visit the
other to further explore chances. And that is good!
Or in German: Das ist gut so ! And beneficial for both
sides.
Doha Bank over the years has not only built up
its presence in the GCC, but also across the globe.
<strong>The</strong> strategy behind this was rather simple: We
follow the trade flows, complement the interest
of foreign and local business partners by our own
network with financial institutions and local business
contacts. And last but not at all least: through the
network we have “eyes and ears” in the important
partner countries. We speak the local language in
the local time zone. And that is beneficial for foreign
companies with business interests in the GCC and
Qatar, and for our Qatari and GCC clients with
activities abroad. We understand business culture
and business practices such as that Germans and
Qatari have quite a different view and tradition when
it comes to bargaining the price.
With the growing Qatari-German relations it
was clear that we had to go to Germany. In May
2011 an official delegation from Doha Bank opened
a Representative Office in Frankfurt, the German
financial capital, as the first Qatari Bank.
And now we can say, that we do not only speak
Arabic and English (with local expatriate accent and
British, Singapore and US dialect) and Japanese and
Korean and Chinese and Turkish… but also German!
Deutsch!
To our German friends we send our
congratulations to their National Day on October 3,
2011, the date when former West Germany and East
Germany became again one country.
Allen Deutschen herzlichen Glückwunsch zum 3.
Oktober!
GmbH, the leading German manufacturer of
extensive range of hydraulic rotary drum cutters and
accessories for excavators decided to start activities
in the middle east through “erkat® middle east w.l.l.”
which is a German-Qatari Co. Established in 2006 in
Qatar as a partnership between “Mr. Klaus Ertmer”
the owner of erkat® GmbH and “Lotus Trading
& Contracting Co,” one of the leading “A” grade
contractors in Qatar, “erkat® middle east w.l.l.” is the
sole agent for distributing erkat® products serving
Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, UAE, Oman,
Jordan & Yemen.
erkat® products are the most economical
and efficient alternative for other means used in
rock excavation, trenching, tunnelling, quarry,
mining, underwater excavation, concrete cutting,
demolition, asphalt planning or simply wherever
it is required to cut hard material as rock, concrete,
asphalt etc. Since 2006, erkat® products have
achieved a huge success being used by most of the
major infrastructure and construction contractors in
Qatar and the GCC.
Some of the advantages that contractors can
achieve by using erkat® products as an alternative
for other means are:
n erkat® products provide higher production rates
compared to other means. <strong>The</strong>y are also used to
precisely achieve the required excavation shape be
it a narrow and deep trench, round tunnel profile,
a rectangular manhole, asphalt patch etc, saving
the cost and time of over-excavation and overbackfilling.
Moreover, the size of the produced
output material is mostly fine and can be recycled
or used as backfilling material saving the costs of
purchasing new material, transportation of the new
material to the site and transportation of the output
material away from the site.
n erkat® rotary drum cutters are designed to
withstand water pressure up to a maximum depth
of 30 metres. That’s why contractors having projects
underground or even if the excavation has to be
done in a river or sea, do not have to worry about
de-watering during the excavation process as
erkat® drum cutters can be utilised to excavate
while completely submerged in water without any
modification or pre-arrangements.
n erkat® products work with minimal noise
and vibration making them the perfect tools to
cut and excavate near a pipe or cable, next to a
building or any ready structure, or even next to
an archaeological site, with no risk of affecting
the surroundings. Moreover, the low noise level
allows the contractor to extend his working hours
through the night without worrying about causing
inconvenience to the surrounding residents.
erkat® middle east is a good example of
the success of cooperation between German
manufacturers and Qatari partners which started
with the decision taken by our first customer in
Qatar, Mr. Abbas El-Zain, the General Manager of
“Nael & Bin Harmal Hydroexport Co. - Qatar”, one of
the leading contracting companies in Qatar & UAE,
to purchase one of erkat® products and introduce
it to the Qatari market. As per Mr. Abbas: “To have a
drum cutter is a must for every contractor. We have
been using erkat® since 2006. <strong>The</strong> precise job done
by drum cutters saved huge costs of over-excavation
and back-filling material. Moreover, we were able
to reuse the material produced by the drum cutter.
Today we are running 10 units in Qatar and UAE.”
ViCon receiving a further contract from Qatari Diar
Mercedes-Benz announced its historic milestone of
125 years earlier this year. It was on January 29, 1886,
that German founder Carl Benz filed an application
in Berlin for a patent on his three-wheeled “horseless
carriage.” Critics claimed the contraption had no
future. 125 years and over 80,000 patent applications
have proved the critics wrong. It was therefore fitting
that a 125th anniversary gala held earlier this year
in Stuttgart, Germany had the presence of German
continue to do so. With the inventor, we will focus
opportunities.”
of hi tech features, strong performance and top safety.
Khaled Shaa’ban, General Manager of NBK
as well as a very safe environment for everyone inside.”
Given its global market share of 61% of the luxury
car market, NBK Automobiles has helped to increase
Mercedes-Benz sales by sharing its success with its
standards in design, performance, comfort and safety.
