Mission
The Junior League of Baton Rouge, Inc.
is an organization of women committed
to promoting volunteerism, developing
the potential of women, and improving
the community through the effective
action and leadership of trained
volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively
educational and charitable.
Vision
The Junior League of Baton Rouge, Inc.
will enhance the quality of life in the
Baton Rouge community in the areas of
physical health, education and cultural
development.

In the 2007-2008 year, the
Junior League of Baton
Rouge continued to fulfill
its mission and build a better
community. First, we continue to develop the
potential of women. Our volunteers have been
well trained in effective action and leadership that
directly impacts the people and agencies we serve.
In addition, the Junior League continues to prepare
our members to serve as lifelong volunteers, serving
in other nonprofit agencies which improve the
lives of Baton Rouge residents. The women in our
organization are committed to improving their own
potential in order to be more effective as volunteers
in our community.
We promoted volunteerism in many successful
ways this year. Our emphasis on connecting the
“Mission and the Money” started with Hollydays in
the fall. Through a widespread marketing campaign,
we did an excellent job of educating our members
and the community on the relationship between
the dollars raised through our fund-raisers and
the community projects we support all year. This
theme was the anchor for all of our fund-raisers.
Moreover, the Board of Directors voted to launch
a broad marketing campaign in the community in
2008 to make sure this message is being broadcast all
over Baton Rouge, so that our residents understand
the reason for our fund-raisers and learn more about
the amazing work we do in the community. Finally,
we hosted the first Volunteer Fair at the Mall of
Louisiana and showcased our projects, fund-raisers
and in-League placements to the community.
The Junior League also continues to improve
our Baton Rouge community. River Road
Recipes, always setting the trend in community
cookbooks, launched a very successful interactive
online cookbook in 2007, and those sales will go
toward funding future community projects. For
the second year in a row, Hollydays raised over
$400,000, allowing us to increase the money we
give to the community. Our third fund-raiser, the
Endowment Fund, also launched a widespread
marketing campaign. In response donations were
substantially greater this year than last year. Finally,
we completed thirteen phenomenal community
projects through our placements.
Our community has been enriched by the
commitment and generosity of our members for
over seventy-five years. With your continued
support, the Junior League of Baton Rouge will
continue to serve our residents and build a better
community.

This year over $600,000 was raised by Junior League of Greater
Baton Rouge through Hollydays: Shop for a Cause and sales of
River Road Recipes.
The money we raise is used not only to financially support programs and
projects of our community partners, but also to train and educate our
members for effective community service.

Community Projects
This year our members worked more than 37,000
volunteer hours to enhance the physical health,
education and cultural development of our community.
According to the Independent Sector (a coalition of
organizations working to strengthen America’s nonprofits),
Junior League of Baton Rouge is making an additional
investment in our community totaling more than $721,500.
This year Junior League of Baton Rouge championed 13
community projects. With funding of $114,098, we were
able to impact the lives of 58,110 men, women, children,
friends and neighbors this year and nearly 200,000 over the
lifetime of these community projects.

New Projects for 2007-2008
Marketing Mania
For this one-year project, our committee members
went to work for Hospice of Baton Rouge. This
amazing organization needed our support to determine
how to better market itself throughout the Baton
Rouge area. The Junior League Committee assisted in
the production of a mailing list and distributed printed
publications for Hospice at Hollydays and at the
Volunteer Fair to raise awareness of these services.
Opening Doors for Autism
Today, 1 in 150 individuals are diagnosed with autism,
making it more common than pediatric cancer,
diabetes, and AIDS combined. It occurs in all racial,
ethnic, and social groups and is four times more likely
to strike boys than girls. Junior League’s focused think
tank is working to determine the best ways we can help
children and parents in our community impacted by
autism. In our first year, we gathered approximately 30
parents and 20 professionals for focus groups, and then
produced a comprehensive Resource Guide for Autism,
which will hopefully help many more families locate
schools, medical and legal resources to aid in the cause.

Community Assistance Fund
In 1980, Junior League of Baton Rouge established the Community
Assistance Fund (CAF) to help other nonprofit organizations in
our community with specific, short-term monetary needs. Since its
inception, the fund has distributed $588,570.00 including this
year’s grants totaling $37,075. During the 2007-2008 year, CAF
grants were awarded to 14 organizations for projects contributing to our
vision of improving physical health, education and cultural development.

Community Assistance Fund Grants 2007-2008
The committee reviewed numerous grant requests and awarded
funding to the following agencies/projects:

American Diabetes Association $2,500
To fund free educational workshops to increase
awareness about diabetes prevention, detection
and management amongst our community’s at-risk
population.
American Heart Association $2,500
Supported development of educational materials
distributed at the 2008 Go Red for Women Luncheon,
encouraging women to become champions of heart and
stroke health and prevention.
Big Buddy Program $2,000
Offset costs of guest-teaching artists who coordinated
and facilitated training sessions and a series of
performance workshops leading up to the ALL CITY
Teen Poetry Slam Festival.
Boys Hope Girls Hope $2,500
Partially funded scholarships for six scholars and two
chaperones to attend Meet the Wilderness camp, an
adventure-based program for at-risk youth in Colorado.
Brave Heart $2,500
Provided Christmas gifts for children living in foster
care, group homes or with relatives.
Girl Scouts – Audubon Council $5,000
Awarded two grants to purchase automated external
defibrillator for Camp Marydale, GSAC’s 400-acre camp
in St. Francisville, Louisiana.
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation $2,500
Funded JDRF’s outreach program (Brad Bella Buddy
Days) to assist and educate families affected by diabetes
in the Greater Baton Rouge area.
Knock Knock Children’s Museum $1,500
Covered fees associated with the Knock Knock’s first
outreach program, Raising a Reader (www.raisingareader.
org) in Early Head Start and public pre-K classrooms.
Louisiana All Veteran’s Reunion $2,500
Underwriting for the first Louisiana three-day All
Veterans’ Reunion event,

Funding for a patient education seminar during Lupus
Awareness Month (October).
Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center $1,500
Purchased cardboard fans to be distributed to people
awaiting cancer screening services provided by the Mary
Bird Perkins Cancer Screening Mobile Unit.
Rocketkidz Foundation $2,500
Providing training, facility access, and equipment to
enable a select group of kids to compete in the 2008
Rocketkidz Triathlon.
St. Vincent de Paul $4,575
Funds were used to purchase 450 uniforms for 225
elementary and middle public school students.

Funds contributed for the preparation, promotion and
presentation of Women’s Week activities.
